Lance Zierlein: Texans Maybe Not Broken Up Over Alex Gibbs' Departure?
Interesting read, especially when it comes to the notion of Houston going RB in the early rounds next month.

I love Lance, but he's wrong in this instance
You only take a RB in round 1 if he is special like Adrian Peterson or Chris Johnson. Ryan Mathews isn’t special. Heck, he may not even start if he were drafted. Round 1 pick needs to be an unquestioned starter.
Hardesty in round 3 is the better pick and allows us to get 2 other starters at CB, DT, OG/C, or even FS.
Just saw a clip on NFL network with Mike Mayock saying that Hardesty had microfracture surgery in his knee(s?).. and that’s why some teams may be cautious.
Die hard Texan fan from the heart of Denmark!
Hmmm
Yeah, see that. BUT, if you google Montario Hardesty and microfracture, nothing come up.
I do see he tore his ACL, but that’s it:

You know what I love seeing there?
Exploded in zone-blocking scheme, high-character guy and never lost a fumble in college. This is why I’m driving the bandwagon!
Especially reading up on Mathews...
Two-down back with durabilty concerns…and he’s who people want at 20? Weird.
Hardesty offers better value.
Personally
I would be happy with either Hardesty or Tate in round 3. Heck, if those two are gone I would be happy with Dixon or Gerhardt in the third.
I just don’t want a back in round one or two. I think our defense should be upgrading in the first two rounds. The only exception is if Pouncey is there in the first and K.Wilson, D.WIlliams, J.Haden, and E.Thomas are already gone.
Pouncey's the only guy I'd want in round 1
I wouldn’t complain if Charles Brown was drafted, but the defense needs some help. The offense will score points, but defense is really what will get this team over the hump.
You guys know who I like?
Steve Slaton, Arian Foster, Jeremiah Johnson, and Ryan Moats.
Foster looked far more than adequate, as did Moats (when he held onto the fuggin ball!), and we know what a healthy Slaton can do. I just think if we’re taking a RB before the 4th, we’re missing out on someone that can come in and start…. nay… EXCEL possibly.

Dont forget the TE
I see a last minute trade in rnd 3 for Chris Meyers for so we can pick up a TE, hey we could always change him to a C right?
How about trading Kris Brown & Chris Brown for a 7th round pick that we could use on a kicker?
I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.

Chris Brown isn’t on our roster. (REJOICE!)
The best Kicker prospect may not get drafted either (he has a 78% career FG accuracy, the second best has about 72%). May not even have to spend a pick on ’em and still get a good one.
I think...
Houston will start shopping for P soon too, Turk is getting to that age that he wants to move to Florida and play shuffle board on the beach.. love the guy but he is up there in age…
as for Shankapotamus? Kubes is gonna give him one more year but i bet there is gonna be one slot on the practice squad for a young kicker.
They bought someone in last off-season
reportedly to split punts with him so he didn’t get tired during pre-season. But a little competition never hurts. Obviously he was still good enough to compete, so no second Punter was signed up. I imagine they’ll do the same this year.

How about the boy from Nebraska?
He can punt & kick, & he damn near beat UT by himself. That shows me he’s at least cool in the clutch. Also Turk ain’t gonna be around forever, so we need someone who can at least do the job. Whoever we get, Joe Marciano better work with him to make sure he does his job

Husker would know more, but I think he’s back at Nebraska for a senior year. (cries) How I dream of a reliable kicker.
If that's the case, theres always Hunter Lawrence from UT

Wow I am suprised no one thought i was joking...
Like I said Turk is a fine punter, but he is 41 yrs old this year… so we should see at least someone for just in case purposes… but the K and P will be undrafted signs no use wasting a draft pick…
I would like to join in that kicker conversation up there....maybe later
Let’s talk about what Lance was talking about. Goodbye, Alex Gibbs! Don’t worry about sending any postcards!
On Seattle’s 1st round. I agree on what Lance said. I see a OT with the 6th pick and with the 14th, although I have seen some mockers taking Ryan Mathews at that spot, I don’t think it will happen. I believe Mathews will make it all the way to 20 and I am undecided if I think the Texans will take him. Right now, I would say about 33% confidence level on that. If you were to ask the Texans for an honest answer, sworn under super secrecy, with hope to die if you told a lie….they would probably tell you the same thing. It would probably be 33% Dan Williams and 33% Earl Thomas. And, since Williams and Thomas will likely be gone at 20, that leaves Mathews. So, what are the Texans gonna do???
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
If our priority in the first is to fix the running game
Please please let it be a guard who will last us for years to come not some RB who if we are lucky we will get only a few good seasons out of.

Good Point
I don’t think Adrian Peterson and Chris Johnson’s love child could run behind Ragdoll and Studdard.

Rec'd
…because it caught me off guard and almost caused a milk through nose moment… I think it was that “Ragdoll and Studdard” sounded like one of those personal injury law firms that advertise on TV at 3am… “So if you or anyone in your family has been in a car accident, call the law offices of Ragdoll and Studdard…”
Shouldn't that be Ragdoll & Duddard?

Not up to us
And I would if I could.
Battling spam at DGDB&D sucked literally 30 minutes of my day. It’s damn near impossible to stop without some freaky safeguards.

yes
Hopefully it ends there, too.

Yes, the Alex Gibbs method of "my way"
Doesn’t always allow players or other coaches to flourish. The team should be better without that kind of tude in the clubhouse and practice field.
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
It's all about adapting
I agree that it’s better to do a few things really well than to do many things with only so-so exectuion. The NFL is all about being able to adpat though. If you do one thing long enough opponents will figure out how to stop it. That’s kind of how I felt about Gibbs. There’s nothing fundamentally wrong with what he was doing in the running game, it’s just that he wouldn’t throw in a few wrinkles here and there to keep other teams from zeroing in on what we were doing.
I had the same feeling the last year Kubes was calling plays. Kubiak had called enough plays for teams to get a feel for him. I know I felt like I knew what we we’re going to run in crucial third down or red zone plays a lot when Kubes was calling plays because he alwas fell back to the same things. If I can guess what we are going to try and do while being blind drunk in the stands I think most NFL defenders are going to figure it out too.

Not entirely true.
But it certainly starts with his philosophy that you can win with undersized/shitty offensive linemen.
The Jets run ZBS as well, but it works for them because every single starting offensive lineman on that team is a former first-rounder. Gibbs is good at what he does, but if losing him means we draft an OG early, then it’s a good trade-off.
Not entirely true
Brandon Moore (RG) is an undrafted guy.
If the choice is Iupati or Pouncey. I’ll take Pouncey. Good centers aren’t easy to find.

In a vaccum
I agree that you shouldn’t use a first round pick on a RB, but once you get out of the first 10 picks or so the financial investment + relatively short lifespan equation isn’t quite so skewed. Sure there are plenty of good RB’s later, but you can find examples of that with every position.
At 20 I don’t have a major problem taking a RB if that’s the best player available. If there’s a DT or CB in the mix that the scouts have graded about the same then RB probably loses the tiebreaker though. If you have the RB rated as a better prospect you have to go ahead and take him. I would rather do that than take a CB who I had questions on because that is a greater need. It all comes down to the specific players on the board when the your team is on the clock. Speaking in the generalities of positions only get you so far.
I don’t obsess over the draft like I used to. I still follow the shit out of the whole process (and maybe even had a window with streaming coverage of the combine open at work). I just don’t get too worked up about it. No matter how much time I spend I’m never going to have as much information as the guys who actually work in the draft room. That doesn’t mean I don’t have players I lke, or a preference when it comes to draft day. It just means I’m not going to throw things when they don’t take that small school DB I was convinced was going to be a stud and who’s name I can’t even remember I wanted in the fourth. (BTW I think they used that pick on a guy sometimes referred to as “Snake Dick” instead)

RBs in the top ten picks since 2000
2000 – No 5 Jamal Lewis; No 7 Thomas Jones
2001 – No 5 Ladainian Tomlinson
2002 – None
2003 – None
2004 – None
2005 – No 2 Ronnie Brown; No 4 Cedric Benson; No 5 Cadillac Williams
2006 – No 2 Reggie Bush
2007 – No 7 Adrian Peterson
2008 – No 4 Darren McFadden
2009 – None
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
A list with the top 20ish might be more relevant
Rudimentary creatures of flesh and blood, you touch my mind, fumbling in ignorance, incapable of understanding.
I dunno
Not really setting the world on fire with that list. Especially when you look up at bfd’s link to see scouting reports on Mathews. He seems like a Casserly pick.
I don't want Mathews
but that list of rbs in the first 10 is pretty f’ing good minus McFadden and Bush. I suppose you could knock Williams for missing time becuase of injury, and Benson for taking so long to finally put it together. Either way thats a pretty high success rate for the 1st round I would think. I would be far more interested in how RBs taking after top 10 have faired.
Rudimentary creatures of flesh and blood, you touch my mind, fumbling in ignorance, incapable of understanding.
I'd love a LT...
but that’s why I’m not wanting Mathews. He’s not as special as any of those guys. He could end up being a McFadden, Brown (who’s really had trouble staying on the field), Williams, Benson…
Spiller at 20 or no dice on a RB
Really thinking DT if the right guy is there would be best, with CB in the second and fourth and RB in the third

I wondered if the ZBS had jumped the shark. Now I wonder if perhaps it was Alex Gibbs who jumped the shark. Reading this makes me wish Baby Shan had stuck around.

I think neither
Every scheme, offensive or defensive, requires a different skill set. Every scheme runs better with high draft choices. Each team has only limited picks in R1 – R2. You can’t have a 1st or 2nd rounder at every spot. So if you run a scheme that fewer other teams run, you can find good players in R3 and later who can start.
Every team can’t be a power running team.
There's some logic in that
I’m reading about Gibb’s though and seeing how he focused a fewer plays and that to me screams out that, yes, perhaps he limited it because of personnel, but it also tells me that opposing OCs were able to figure this out and gameplan against it.
He’s gone and Shanahan, too, so let’s see what the new guys do. Plus, would like to see some better personnel. The current personnel is limited by their talent level. Not saying they can’t learn more, but their small and not especially strong.
I know we need players at other positions to be successful, so we can’t draft 1, 2, 3 on O-Lineman…..
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
by Rip Jersey on Mar 27, 2010 9:07 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Actually it has more to do with the fact that the ZBS requires light linemen to be effective
While 3-4 defenses tend to feature the Juggernaut at NT. This puts the laws of physics on the side of the defense (see also Jenkins, Kris vs Doll, Rag).
I'll eliminate you like I eliminate gluten from my diet.
