BREAKING NEWS: Texans Ink DeMeco Ryans To Six-Year Deal
Original BRB FanShot by Rivers here; I'm just making this a full story for distribution and celebration purposes. Adam Schefter, via Twitter:
Filed to ESPN: Texans signed LB DeMeco Ryans to a six-year, $48 million contract extension.
I'm far too excited about this. DeMeco's not going anywhere, and Rick Smith didn't have to dole out Terrell Suggs money to do it. Share your euphoria in the Comments below. Hell, even if you're not euphoric, share those feelings in the Comments too.

Can we start a new trend?
You know how in most blogs people race to be the first comment by simply writing “first” and nothing else…I say we start writing fuck dunta as the first comment of every new blog..make it a competition. any takers?

I'm going to keep expressing my happiness with this news
because it deserves it.
DeMeco Ryans has earned that money and will continue to do so. Rick Smith was not stingy, but also didn’t break the bank. Front-loading the deal was also a good move should (when) the cap returns. All around, it’s just great to hear that the Texans got it done. There’s no need to worry about this, and they can move to the OD and Pollard talks and the draft.
by TexansDC on Mar 30, 2010 4:47 PM CDT reply actions 2 recs
I honestly think they wont give OD a new deal until hes medically cleared in the summer. Im crossing my fingers for Pollard in a month or two.

I don't expect something soon
but at least their attention can go to other contracts.
DEMECO IS A TEXAN THROUGH 2015! Such great news!
As long as there's a clause where he gets a bonus for every ACL tear that occurs within 1-2 yards from him

As far as i am concerned
This is a sign that there is a God.
Lets get some recursion up in this bitch

When news broke of the Texans signing DeMeco Ryans to a six-year, $48 million extension, we wondered if Texans fans would approve of the move. That would be a resounding yes, according to SB Nation’s Texans community, Battle Red Blog
Rudimentary creatures of flesh and blood, you touch my mind, fumbling in ignorance, incapable of understanding.
How can we not be happy???
Demeco, former DRoY recipient, is a play maker even if he isnt getting 100 tackles a season. Plus on top of that he is the leader of our D, and keeps everyone in line. Plus he is the Abbot to Cushing’s Costello
heh, sorry for having to ask but . . .
What is DRoY?
DeMeco Ryans of the Year award? =D
Just wondering b/c I honestly don’t know.
by BattleRedFan on Mar 30, 2010 10:52 PM CDT up reply actions
Defensive Rookie of the Year
which he won in 2006. :D
aha! thank you
that makes alot of sense now =)
by BattleRedFan on Mar 30, 2010 11:15 PM CDT up reply actions
Cushing was
the second DRoY recipient on the Texans… interesting I dont think any other team has had two players in <5yrs receive the award… i may be wrong maybe one of our stat junkies can look it up
Stat Junkie
Defensively:
The Colts in 83, 85. Chiefs in 89 and 92. Texans in 06 and 09.
Most DRoys are LBs.
Offensively:
Lions (who have had a ton of ROYs) in 67 and 68. Vikings and 73 and 76. Patriots in 88 and 91 then 91 and 95. Broncos in 2000 and 2002. Vikings in 07 and 09.
Unsurprisingly, RBs win a lot of ORoys.
Players from the U have won the most ROYs.
The Lions and Steelers lead in total ROYs.
The Eagles, Jags, and Seahawks have never had a ROY.
Only once has a team had the ORoy and DRoy: The 1967 Detroit Lions.

It is always nice when a player who's jersey you own...
gets signed. It makes that 80-100$ you spent go that much further…so here is to another 6 years of my Battle Red # 59 Jersey being valid

Reading about DeMeco’s contract was more exciting than “Sane Planning, Sensible Tomorrow” and “Rational Thinking, Reasonable Future” combined.

YES!!!
This is GREAT news! Also maybe some of the Rick Smith and Bob McNair haters will STFU now (not around here, elsewhere).
I'm first in line
I even trusted him with the Cushing pick. A lot of people on other boards seem to think he’s incompetent… which is ridiculous. He’ll be a great GM for a very long time. He also front loaded Ryans’s contract. Brilliant move and a reasonable contract at that.
by WhiskeyR on Mar 30, 2010 6:49 PM CDT up reply actions 4 recs
keep in mind
most of the people on “other” boards are complete morons who are on there to talk shit about the team. Main reason I stopped going to them alltogether.

This really was the one thing that Rick Smith needed to show
He had supposedly yet to show the ability to lock up layers long term. With Williams coming up I’m feeling better about it.

Schuab has longer left on his contract I thought?

Unless I'm wrong (which is always a case)
They picked up his option this season, but isn’t that it or do they have a multi-year option thing going on?

A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.
http://www.battleredblog.com
yeah I thought they had done that when they finalized Kubiak's contract
but I could also be wrong. . . .
by BattleRedFan on Mar 30, 2010 10:48 PM CDT up reply actions
I didn't think...
I was in the physical shape to do a backflip…but…
I totally just did. And now I wish I’d Youtube’d it. Oh well.
Ryans deserved this contract, and the Texans deserved his commitment. Unlike Dumba Robberson, Demeco really did wanna stay a Texan and showed it. This season, he will receive the respect from the fans, and their love, too (like he needs any more).
God bless Rick Smith and Kubiak and Demeco and his agent for getting the deal done. Best news of the offseason so far…
And if Pollard signs…I will say with a boisterous thundering echo from the roof of Reliant Stadium…

rewriting the business plan here
Step 1. Don’t be Dunta.
Step 2. …
Step 3. Profit.
by grungedave on Mar 30, 2010 7:05 PM CDT reply actions 1 recs
Awesome
We knew this was coming. The Texans are going to take care of their guys (screw Dunta).
This was the most straightforward of the contracts to take care of, as it is a premium player at a premium position with excellent injury history and nothing crazy going on.
Pollard, as a cast-off with one year of success will be a little trickier.
Owen Daniels, as a premium player at a not-so-premium position recovering from an injury, along with that retarded silly Kellen Winslow contract, will be more difficult.
They’ll do what they can to get this stuff worked out. It takes time.
Actually, they might just move on to a 20 year contract with Cushing next. Keep that guy forever.
Next Steps:
Re-sign OD.
Re-sign Chester Pitts (8 years with the Texans. 1 Injury, otherwise started EVERY game, he deserves to stay here when we shock the world).
Re-sign Pollard.
Draft.
Mini-Camps / OTA’s.
Training Camp.
Pre-Season.
Happy New Year.

woo hoo !
He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is
Oh thank God..
I haven’t posted in while since med school has completely taken over my life, but as sooon as I read this news, I cam runnin’. Thank you Rick Smith, thank you Meco’s agent, and THANK YOU MECO for being reasonable and loyal. I feel both sides won this (very rare in today’s free agent battles), and credit is due for both sides. Defensive coordinators are quickly running out of excuses not to field a defense that can compliment our offense (get them a corner, a healthy FS, and a run stopping Def Tackle and there will be no excuses).
2010 is our year!!!

Agreed! Thank God!
I was worried we wouldn’t find out until after the draft about this.
=) I am really glad that DeMeco and the Texans got a good deal that both can be happy about. This deal actually is a textbook “good deal” b/c it truly benefits both parties.
w00t! Go Texans!
All we needed was for Rick Smith to finish up with his work on the overtime issue on the competition committee for him to get back to work on inking deals.
W00t! =D very well done!
I gotta say it...
Is it just me or is anyone else thinking how odd it is for us to be a happy bunch?
I dig this thing called joy.

New found optimism, I am allowing myself to hope the Texans actually draft a real nose tackle….That would be pretty awesome too,
I hope that contract came with a pair of "Rick Paid Me" cleats

Then we can present them to DeMeco on the first day of training camp.

Thank you
I have been waiting for this to happen for some time. I know that some players have a bad taste in their mouth about the way that Rick Smith has been doing his business. I however think he has been going at it the right way.
DeMeco earned his money and for that I thank him and so did the Texans.
Dunta had a horrible injury, never bounced back, and was shown the door… this is a business.
Owen Daniels and some fans are unhappy about his status but the truth is that he should have to play under his current deal and prove himself for his contract. I wish him the best because he is one of my favorites but if ends up not working out, I am glad that I cheer for a team that isn’t making bonehead decisions and tossing too much money around.
I truly believe the Texans are doing things the right way. It is slow going at times but this team is on the right path.
Go Texans!!!
Words cannot describe the AWESOME!!
