Possible FS: O.J. Atogwe

via National Football Post:

Word out of St. Louis is that the Rams are “strongly considering” placing the lowest tender offer available—the right of first refusal—on free safety Oshiomogho Atogwe(notes), according to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

I know that we already have a starter at FS(Wilson) and a capable back up(Barber). But it never hurts to add depth in our secondary. Atogwe is only 28 yrs old (Wilson is 30 and Barber is 24) and is one of The Ram's best defensive players.

He recorded 74 tackles,  2 interceptions, 1 sack, 3 forced fumbles and 5 passes defended while only playing 12 games last season. He missed the last four games and was placed on IR due to a  torn labrum and cartilage damage(shoulder injury).

I can't find any news on how the surgery went and I really have no idea how bad this injury would affect him in the long run but for the right price, I would love to see him play for the Texans.

Thoughts?

yes preeze

was excited about the possibility last year and seeing this come up again has had the same effect. Wilson is a huge step over barber/busing but on the grand scheme of things is just average. Otogwe would give us another strong presence alongside Pollard. Like him or hate him, he’s a damn good player. Rams would be fools to let him go.

Winning season... Check. Higher expectation bar... big Check.

Im with you.

He was one of their best defensive players next to that rookie LB(lauranitis?)

Their loss would be our gain.

Lauranitis sounds like an STD to me lol

lol

His name is James Laurinaitis.

Yes, it’s copy pasta.

I dunno....surgery...ouch....

Always nervous to take a guy right after surgery. He would need ALOT of evaluation. Obviously the Rams aren’t feeling to confident about him.

There are definitely some risks

that comes along with signing him.

But the rewards are greater.

A 2 year $5 million contract with $2 million guaranteed should suffice.

He’s definitely a step up from Wilson. A trio of Atogwe, Wilson and Barber at the FS should be a nice rotation. And that would definitely plug the FS hole.

by Jordann on Mar 4, 2010 10:51 AM CST up reply actions

2 years, $5 million?

He’d be insulted if he got low-balled like that. We’re talking about a guy who is a year removed from a season in which he forced 11 turnovers (and eight in each of the two years prior to that).

If the Texans want him, he’s going to command a pretty big contract. And if they think he looks good in a physical, then I’m all for it. He’s just 28, and he has created a shit-ton of turnovers for a team with no legitimate pass rush. He’d fit in perfectly here.

by Nashmeister on Mar 4, 2010 1:42 PM CST up reply actions

You're right.

Rick Smith can pull strings to make things happen but he’s not a magician lol

If the texans were to sign a big time FA safety besides Pollard, it’d be Atogwe.

by Jordann on Mar 4, 2010 1:45 PM CST up reply actions

well

He wouldn’t have to play right away so we could give him plenty of time to rehab.

I can't believe you almost missed your cue.

Im glad you prevented the internetz from imploding again.

by Jordann on Mar 4, 2010 2:05 PM CST up reply actions

He's more of a possibility than

Antrel Rolle who is wanting $8 million a year (he’d be the highest paid safety in the league).

by TexansDC on Mar 4, 2010 11:00 AM CST reply actions

Negative.

He’s a ballhawk. IMO he’s better at coverage than Eugene Wilson.

by Jordann on Mar 4, 2010 11:15 AM CST up reply actions

And he only has to play half the season

Wilson is usually good for a half.

Dunta's weightspeed was too low

by texanphil on Mar 4, 2010 2:04 PM CST up reply actions

Half?

Try 3/4ths!

But really though. He’s not as injury prone as Wilson. Atogwe only missed 4 games in his career.

by Jordann on Mar 4, 2010 2:06 PM CST up reply actions

Sure

but coming off an injury, I didn’t want to put too much pressure on the $5M+ salary.

I’d seriously love this pickup.

If we got a little aggressive...(dreaming)

[X] RB – Mike Bell
[X] FS – O.J. Atogwe
[X] OG – That dude from Seattle

Our needs would be mostly filled…all we would need is a CB, a DT, a C, and some depth here and there….

Rick Smith, you know what needs to happen.

by TexansDC on Mar 4, 2010 2:16 PM CST up reply actions

I was thinking the same thing.

To have half of our needs taken care of before the draft would lead me to believe that we’ll make the playoffs next season.

by Jordann on Mar 4, 2010 2:18 PM CST up reply actions

Rams’ defenders have a knack for accumulating tackles. They’re constantly on the field.

i just want a Ballhawk

dont care if its a MLB cuz this team needs to win the turnover battle, lets face we always give the game to whoever because we always have a major turnover thats screws us over.

O_o

A ballhawk MLB?

A ballhawk middle line backer?

Consider me intrigued. Are you talking about Patrick Willis?
Because he’s the only ballhawking middle linebacker there is. Amirite?

I'm sorry Jordann, I can't let you guys take Atogwe.

That would ruin my dream of seeing him play for my Dolphins next year. LOL

As for his surgery, I live in St. Louis and the reports we are hearing around here is that his surgery went pretty well and he should recover fully and be readyto go by training camp. The Rams aren’t lacking confidence in his ability so much as they are trying to get a contract figured out. They have been trying to get a contract deal worked out with Atogwe for almost 2 years now (which is why they franchised him last year), but the owners were not putting as much interest in the football team as they were in selling it. They didn’t seem to feel that he was worth what he was asking (I’m not sure what he was asking for), and he felt that they were trying to lowball him. Who knows if that will change if/when the new owner takes over.

All that aside, if the Rams are in fact dumb enough to put this tender on one of their top 3 players, I’m hoping the Dolphins jump all over it. We also have a big need for a FS and Atogwe is a good ballhawking one. And like Jordann said, he can also tackle well in addition to picking off passes and forcing fumbles. Hope this gives you some more information you were looking for.

Hey Chupa! Nice to see you again man.

Thanks for the additional insight on Atogwe’s post-injury status.

I didn’t know the Dolphins were looking to replace Gibril Wilson. Wasn’t he the best player that yall had on defense last season? And isn’t he your favorite Dolphin defender? Does it sound like im serious? lol

I have a feeling that more and more teams are gonna be interested in Atogwe if he does get slapped with the lowest tender. Right now, I heard that the niners are also interested in Atogwe. So we definitely got some competition for Atogwe’s services. I wouldn’t be too happy to see him with the the dolphins because that might just break our undefeated streak against yall lol

BTW. Is that trade for Gibril Wilson and A boxer named Baxter still on the block? Because we’re thinking of trading Andre Johnson for a top flight safety like Gibril Wilson lol

by Jordann on Mar 4, 2010 1:43 PM CST up reply actions

Didn't you watch BRBTV?

We’re trading Andre Johnson for VY because he. JUST. WINS. GAMES.

On a more serious note, yes the 49ers are interested in Atogwe (At least NinersNation is). The Bears would be but they’re off tampering with Peppers and wondering if they should trade a 3rd to grab Boldin while trying to trade their TE…the Bears aren’t gonna have any picks after FA at this rate.

ROFL

Well, I will pass it along that you guys are still interested in that offer. See what I can do for you.
