Free Agent Thread for 3/7/10

Just to have a new thread so we don't have to scroll thru a few hundred comments....

I guess this could be a new thread.

Signings:

Seems like Kampman has agreed to a deal with the Jags. Terms havent been disclosed yet. Id rather Kampman be outta the AFC South as I still think he is pretty good.

Rumors:

Shaun Rogers maybe on the move?
Texans are or are not interested in Bodden?

Anyone know of any visits scheduled this week?

(Thanks for kicking this off, EHTR.  Bumped accordingly. - bfd)

Rogers for a 4th would be good..

but if we give up picks, Jerome Harrison for a second rounder, pick up a studd for the secondary in the first round, offensive line (somebody not named Chris) in the 3rd round. Rogers could cover that fourth round pick??

Leigh Bodden

I think Leigh Bodden is actually a pretty decent cornerback who has stayed under the radar pretty well. I think he’d be a coverage upgrade over Dunta.

The Texans have done a pretty good job in the past of signing someone who they get to visit…they got Antonio Smith to forego his numerous other FA visits to sign on the spot last year. I hope they do so again this year.

I think keeping Walter and adding Bodden would be pretty good for a Texans offseason.

I would be intrigued by adding Justin Fargas…not flashy, but he has done well in the past in a similar system for a much worse team. He would be depth at the RB position, not the fix.

Jared Gaither

After assigning him just a first-round tender, the Ravens are believed to be willing to move restricted free agent LT Jared Gaither.

Gaither would’ve gotten the first- and third-round tender if the Ravens were truly intent on keeping him. The Ravens want to move Michael Oher to left tackle. The Baltimore Sun suggests four possible destinations for Gaither: San Francisco, Indianapolis, Dallas, and Seattle. Teams targeting Gaither could probably work out a deal for less than the first-round pick.
Source: Baltimore Sun

From Rotoworld.com

If it costs us a 2nd rounder I would DEFINETLY be all over that…a 24 year old LT would be great! Move Brown to the inside and then we dont need to spend a early pick on OG

From Rotoworld.com
According to Texans beat reporter John McClain, free agent CB Leigh Bodden’s price tag “has come way down.”

Bodden may have originally been targeting a Dunta Robinson-like $57 million mega deal, but he isn’t going to get it. The 28-year-old may have to settle for a contract similar to Jabari Greer’s last offseason. The Saints signed Greer for $22 million over four years along with just over $10M guaranteed.

If we get Bodden for just over THAT price, wow. Makes Rick Smith look like a flipping genius. Wow, just wow.

From Rotoworld.com

Captain Hairspray signed with the 49ers:

49ers agreed to terms with QB David Carr on a two-year contract.
The move doesn’t affect Alex Smith or promising third-stringer Nate Davis’ roster spots, but could cost Shaun Hill his. The 49ers’ idea is to bring in a stronger-armed backup with a Smith-like skill set to lead the offense similarly if Smith goes down. Carr, who turns 31 in July, played sparingly during his two years in New York as Eli Manning’s backup, but was effective in preseason action. Terms of the deal are still unknown.

LEIGH BODDEN SPEAKS
"Hopefully, I can get things done with the Texans and just move on," he [Bodden] said.

- Leigh Bodden via FOX 26 News and the Boston Herald

Come on, Rick! Let’s make it happen!

For those too lazy to click, I'll highlight the important quotes from Bodden
“I think it’s great having a team like the Houston Texans being interested in me. I’m just going to go here, meet the coaches, and hopefully everything goes good,” said Bodden. “I do [have other teams scheduled for visits], but hopefully I don’t need it. Hopefully, I can get things done with the Texans and just move on.”

by TexansDC on Mar 7, 2010 9:02 PM CST up reply actions

That tells me...

He actually wants to play here. Goodness FO, let’s get Bodden signed ASAP. He’s the upgrade we need NOW.

by Fuzion on Mar 7, 2010 9:03 PM CST up reply actions

The agent still needs to get involved.

So, there’s that.

A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.

Yeah but...

The player can definitely insist on where he wants to go. If the Texans offer the right price, he’ll sign. Thank goodness he’s not represented by Drew Rosenhaus… Oy…

by Fuzion on Mar 7, 2010 9:05 PM CST up reply actions

There is that...
[Boston Globe writer Ian] Rapoport suggests that Bodden’s price range will likely be in the $4-$5 million annually range.

Worth every bit of it.

by TexansDC on Mar 7, 2010 9:06 PM CST up reply actions

I thought earlier...

wasn’t there a post earlier that said his agent had talked to the Texans on the phone so that they knew ahead of time what the demands would be? I could have him mistaken for someone else, but I thought preliminary talks had already been done.

by Big T33 on Mar 7, 2010 9:07 PM CST up reply actions

Read that too...

And I can see the FO paying up to $6 or 7 mil even for Bodden. It’s still less than Dunta, which is a huge plus.

And for Bodden…nuff said.

by Fuzion on Mar 7, 2010 9:09 PM CST up reply actions

If cough cough...

I mean WHEN Bodden signs, do people still think we need to draft a CB?

Bodden, Quin, Reeves, Mccain, Molden, Bennett

Does anyone know if Molden or Bennett can play FS?

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Mar 7, 2010 9:11 PM CST reply actions

Patrick Robinson

If he’s there at 41, even if we sign Bodden, I think we should take him

by Draco on Mar 7, 2010 9:20 PM CST reply actions

He won't be there

But I’d be down.

Well...

We needed CB before we got rid of Dunta, and if we get Bodden we still need a CB because we are back to Pre-dunta in atlanta time with bodden.

You're assuming

Dunta counts as an acceptable corner.

by kaizer on Mar 7, 2010 9:36 PM CST up reply actions

true.

but we still need CB, it does put it a little bit lower, so it frees the draft up a bit I guess.

Bodden is immensely better than Dunta.

Last season: 5 INTs and 15 PDs to 0 and 9.
Last 5 season averages: 3 INTs and 15 PDs to 1 and 9.

Bodden with 6 missed tackles to Dunta’s 10.

Bodden’s 4 penalties to Dunta’s 8 (plus 1 that was declined).

PFF ranks (overall/coverage): Bodden – 14/13 Dunta – 98/60

Don't buy what the media sells

Bodden’s the #1 CB on the market. He was better last season and the past 5 seasons. It’s not even close.

Dunta is a big pile of shit.

by TexansDC on Mar 7, 2010 9:41 PM CST up reply actions

Don’t get me wrong, bodden is better, I am very excited for him.

We just still need CB.

Rec'd

BPA will get you burned a whole lot less than drafting the best player at an alleged position of need.

Welcome, Fuzion. Look forward to reading more from you.

Of course if Dunta stayed he still wouldn’t get to see….cause he would make us lose.

Atlanta, now that is a rollercoaster ride there...

Yep, since losing Matt Schaub to the Texans, the Mike Vick thing, followed by the Coach Bobby Petrino fiasco; then, things miraculously picked up when they hired former Patriot head of scouting Thomas Dimitroff as GM and picked up San Diego free agent RB Michael Turner, drafted Matt Ryan at QB…but now, WTH is this guy thinking with the Dunta signing? Is that guy running out of tricks or does he know something that the rest of the world doesn’t?

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Mar 7, 2010 10:21 PM CST up reply actions

TD is allegedly a DB scouting genius...

which in no way answers your question on what he saw in Dunta that we perhaps missed. Maybe he watched old film?

by HoustonTransplant on Mar 8, 2010 1:13 AM CST up reply actions

most likely

or, maybe he was in awe of robinson’s superman tackle or his sense of style

That I respectfully disagree.

by tehGrindCrusher on Mar 8, 2010 11:13 AM CST up reply actions

I'm guessing you mean the "needing OLB last year" part.

Since we did need one. Badly. It was only a question of whether it would be Cushing or Mathews.

If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?

by Shake on Mar 8, 2010 12:44 PM CST up reply actions

Respectfully disagree...

We did not “need” a OLB in round one of the NFL Draft. We needed secondary help at the time. We needed O-Line help at the time.

What we got was the BPA at the position, and it was Cushing. Even Kubiak has been on record as saying they were not specifically looking at OLB or LB at all, but since Cushing fell as far as he did, they had no qualms picking him up there.

So to say it was a need “badly”, I’d say I’ll go with Coach Kubes on this one.

by Fuzion on Mar 8, 2010 4:01 PM CST up reply actions

No

I vehemently and firmly (but respectfully) disagree with the best player available draft strategy. At least for the Texans.

Do we need to draft another stud RDE, MLB, WR or TE early on if the best player available plays one of those positions?

I don’t think so.

I'll eliminate you like I eliminate gluten from my diet.

Query

If Dez Bryant is sitting there at No. 20, do you take him?

by Tim on Mar 9, 2010 8:10 AM CST up reply actions

before re-signing K-dub

possibly, depending on who else is available.

Now, uh, no. Not even in the top 6 rounds.

Dunta's weightspeed was too low

by texanphil on Mar 9, 2010 10:11 AM CST up reply actions

No.

What good would he do for us at that cost? There are plenty of other needs to fill. Why should we be throwing money at a WR when we have that need covered.

I'll eliminate you like I eliminate gluten from my diet.

by tehGrindCrusher on Mar 9, 2010 12:53 PM CST up reply actions

if we had signed Bodden

and a OG or two, then we have two holes (NT and OLB).

If this were the case, reaching for a position of need becomes a losing proposition. BPA wins.

Without Bodden and an OG or anything else in FA, your argument is winning out, I believe. We currently have holes at CB, NT, OLB, OG, OC. So the value in ditching BPA in favor of finding one of these 5 positions to upgrade wins.

Dunta's weightspeed was too low

by texanphil on Mar 9, 2010 10:14 AM CST up reply actions

If you define reach the way HairHead does, sure.

But a reach is only a reach if a particular player would still have been around the next time you are on the board. So even if we had signed Bodden and two OGs, I can’t imagine there being too many NTs and OLBs that would still be there for us in the second. Ergo, that’s not a reach.

Likewise, considering how unlikely it is that we would ever sign two starting-caliber OGs and Bodden in free agency, I can’t see this scenario ever coming to pass.

I'll eliminate you like I eliminate gluten from my diet.

by tehGrindCrusher on Mar 9, 2010 12:56 PM CST up reply actions

so you'd be in favor of taking a NT

who you like that won’t make it to our pick in round 2.

If that is one half of our positional needs, that makes sense.

If we have a value pick in one of 5 or 6 positions of need, that one position doesn’t win out, and I would define that as a reach if we went for a NT who should go in the second, and avoided 4-5 guys at other positions of need who should go in the first.
