Were you asked to participate?
Just curious.
And I admit: the thought of taking Earl Thomas has me less excited with each mock draft iteration.
A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.

Earl has grown on me
But not the point where I want him over a true NT.

By true NT
You mean a COVER NT right?
/Bryan joke.

Cover NTs
don’t exist in a “Tampa-based 4-3 hybrid not cover-2 style four-gap defense” like we run 133% of the time.
texanphil is smart and I’m a retard.

way too short
of an explanation
Dunta's weightspeed was too low
Re: Participation
Nope, I haven’t been involved in any of these mocks. I imagine, however, that we’ll do the annual SBN-wide mock through MTD, so we’ll all be contributing to that.
Funny…I’m actually getting more excited about the prospect of Earl Thomas at No. 20 than I was a few weeks ago (though I’ve never been vehemently against him or anything).
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Pick up Atogwe and put Thomas at CB?
by HoustonTransplant on Mar 9, 2010 8:57 AM CST up reply actions
Thomas has to stay at safety
He has to cover Clark, and if he could really play CB and be successful, he won’t be there at 20.
Kinda pulling for dan Williams or a trade down

Pouncey
then a CB.
Our NT (or RDT) upgrade would be part of a rotation.
Our O-line getting us in from the 1 yard line helps our defense more than 1/3 of a NT.
And our CB position is better value in round 2, and that is a gaping hole, atm.
Dunta's weightspeed was too low
Round 1
Hard to take off my burnt orange glasses, but I wouldn’t mind taking UCLA’s Price over ET.
Round 2: If we take Dwyer with Ghee still on the board, I will be thoroughly upset. Not sold on Dwyer in the slightest.
That's an understatement

Why take Dywer in the 2nd when we can grab Hardesty later?
I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.
by The Night Owl on Mar 9, 2010 11:28 AM CST up reply actions
Why take Dwyer at all?
Small hands, comes from a gimmicky offense, shutdown by decent defense (see Iowa), and no one knows about his pass blocking/receiving. Hardesty or Ben Tate should be the RB.
That 1st round has us passing on Pouncey, Charles Brown, Wilson, Price, and Weatherspoon
2nd round – Ghee, Washington, and Thomas.
I hope Smithiak outdoes these mockers or else this place is gonna be a mix of anger, depression, and alcohol.
patience my friend
the last couple of drafts have been good, and i bet there are some players we havent even discussed that could be great value in the draft.
im a big hardesty fan, and my ideal draft would be this.
trade 20 down to 26-27 and get an extra third.
take pouncey at 27
take ghee or nate allen in the second
take hardesty in the third
take a DT in the third if someone they like is there
i think we need some first round talent at the OLINE positions, as ragdoll is just not going to cut it.
i REALLY hope we stay away from kyle wilson…… think he has a HUGE bust factor
"Its like a silk bag filled with puppy ears"
Your ideas are intriguing
A DT in round 3 likely would likely be Torrell Troup. I could live with Troup if it meant we had a new C, CB, and RB.
Rip’s about to do backflips, but I’m starting to think the best move is to move back and draft Pouncey or Charles Brown. I think you nail it perfectly when you say the line needs more first round talent.
the reason for my reasoning is this
brown – 1st round
winston – 3rd……or 4th??? one of yall will know.
they are both tackles…
and the interior.
myers – 10246 round pick
pitts – 3rd i think – love to have him back
briesel, studdard, pee pants all late rounders.
it no coincidence that our interior line isnt very good IMO.
and im more and more convinced of two things…
they like wilson at FS for at least next year (i tend to agree)
and RB in the first just doesnt fit the philosophy IMO.
DC, are there any other DTs, and NOT LAMAR HOUSTON, that could be in the third round range???
and im a fan of charles brown too..
im curious about this kid…. he is from alief even!

6’6’’, 310, and should be smart if he went to duke

re: Caveman
If I remember correctly, Winston and Barbaro were taken with the first two picks of the 3rd Round in 2006. Although I don’t remember how we got the 2nd pick of R3.
If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?
This sounds right.
And further proves my reasoning
awaiting texans DC comments !!!
And fuck dunta !

We got the 2nd 3rd round pick from New Orleans…I don’t know why though.
Pitts was a 2nd round pick all the way back in that wonderful 2002 draft. While everyone else is a later round pick. (C Myers – 6/200, G Studdard – 6/183, G Brisiel – undrafted, G Peepants – undrafted, C Helms – undrafted, T Stenavich – undrafted, G/C Caldwell – 3/77, T Butler – 3/89). Talent can be found through all rounds of the draft, but I mean….we suck inside and we also have a lot of low round/undrafted talent there. Coincidence? I think not.
Other DTs (or NTs if you believe we need some size) in the 3rd round range include: Cam Thomas (NT), Tyson Alualu, Linval Joseph (NT), Torrell Troup (NT), D’Anthony Smith,
Vince Oghobaase is a 4th-5th rounder (as well as Arthur Jones whose name I’ve seen mocked to the Texans). Geno Atkins is a projected 2nd rounder whose name has also been mocked to Houston. And of course there’s undersized Lamarr Houston.
Would love to see this
C. Brown – D. Brown – Walton – Caldwell – Winston
Or this
D. Brown – Caldwell – Pouncey/Walton – Mike Johnson – Winston
Heck, as long as Ragdoll and Studdard are on the bench…I’m happy.
Yeah!!
Lets start two rookies, a 2nd year player who got limited time last year, and a 3rd year player who’s position we just changed!!
That will really make our OL better!!!

but not next season

You have no proof
and I have proof, so we shall agree to disagree on this one before it gets ugly.
I do agree that Ragdoll and Studdard weren’t great, but you cant convince me that an O-line with 2 rookies and 2 players making position changes will be better than one with say: D.Brown, Pitts, Caldwell, Studdard and Winston. If Pitts isnt back than we should maybe draft Iupati in round 1 but I dont like the idea of moving our LT to make room for a LT drafted at #20, we can get better value at a more important need with that pick.
To all Houston sports fans, Houston is the 4th biggest city in America, there will be traffic on the way to your respective sports game. Come Early, Be Loud, Stay Late.
What proof do you have?
There’s tape where Ragdoll gets abused and that Studdard isn’t much more than a body.
I’d love to see Pitts come back, but I’m starting to wonder if it’ll happen. I hope he does…it’d help a lot. Especially if it keeps Iupati off the team.
After he got abused in pass blocking drills at the Senior Bowl by Geno Atikins…I kinda stopped caring about him.
Charles Brown, Mike Johnson…they’re being called perfect fits for the ZBS. I also said I’d trade back from 20 (for an extra 3rd) and take Charles Brown. It’s not straight up at 20 (which assumes other talent is gone by that point).
Yes, starting 2 rookies isn’t something you want to do, but this line isn’t good. We were near the bottom of the league in running and our QB was one of the most hit in the league. We aren’t going anywhere if Schaub isn’t around. We have to invest in that line with dollars and draft picks. A good line can make the push for 1 yard, a good line can keep the QB upright even if he throws 50 times a game. With the Tits and Jags improving their pass rush…it’s important to improve the line especially since they failed in division games (averaged 12 sacks in 6 division games versus 13 in 10 other games).
I said I dont have any proof
And you dont have any proof either that your proposed line will be better than the one we have. I wasnt saying proof about Raggy and Studdard being bad, I know you have that.
You can put some of the blame for Schaub getting knocked down on Schaub. He doesnt scramble and he holds onto the ball too long sometimes.
Pass blocking drills at the senior bowl turned you off of Iupati for good?? C’mon man, sample size!! If that turned you off Iupati than Slaton’s 2009 year should make you stop caring about him too.
A good RB can get you more than 1 yard, a good RB will allow the QB to not have to throw 50 times. The Tits lost KVB and havent added anyone, how did they improve their pass rush??

Actually...
You said:
and I have proof
I’m guessing that you left a “no” out of that statement?
If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?
The reason why I use the Senior Bowl in the case of Iupati is because Iupati comes from Idaho – the WAC. I’m not a college football elitist, but at the Senior Bowl you’re going against NFL rookie talent compared to the weekly guys in the WAC. I think Iuapti will be a fine guard, but I wouldn’t want someone who got pushed around by Geno Atkins.
A good RB can get 1 yard. However, when your Gs and Cs are being blown off the ball they can’t…unless their name is Barry Sanders who could pretty much make a gain out of anything.
As for losing Vanden Bosch, you don’t think the Tits are going to replace him in the draft with a guy like Dunlap or mini-Mario or Everson Griffin? Even then….their DT Tony Brown had 2 sacks in the 2nd Tennesse game.
Step 3: PROFIT!

And for those wondering...
Charles Brown is rated as the #1 OT for a ZBS
Mike Johnson is rated as the #1 OG for a ZBS
And both can be had by the Texans rather easily.
Trade back in the 1st, pick up an extra 3rd
Current Texans Mock by someone who watched Texans games…
Draft OT Charles Brown (1), CB Brandon Ghee (2), OG Mike Johnson (3), RB Montario Hardesty (3), DT Torrell Troup (4), FS Robert Johnson (5), C Erik Cook (6), OLB Stevenson Sylvester (6), WR Scott Long (7)
i meant oghabosse in a round later than the third
i like the
brown, caldwell, pouncey, johsnon, winston lineup
gice me that with ghee or mccourty, troup, and hardesty
man that would be a great draft!!!!
ill settle for just the oline guys even
"Its like a silk bag filled with puppy ears"
There's a lot of wants and needs...
I’d be thrilled beyond belief if the draft included at least Brown or Johnson. Anything to improve that interior offensive line.
We traded down with N.O.
They got Jamal Brown and we got nothing I mean TJ.
"If you aren't fired with enthusiasm, you will be fired with enthusiasm." Vince Lombardi
Traded w/ NO in 2005 draft?
We didn’t trade back in ’06 (taking Mario & DeJesus)
If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?
here it is
Oghobaase, a native of Houston, Texas, logged 37 tackles, 7.5 tackle for loss and 2.5 quarterback sacks despite missing four games in 2009 due to injury. A two-time honorable mention all-league pick, he finished his Duke career with 165 tackles, 36.5 tackles for loss and 14.0 sacks. On Duke’s career charts, Oghobaase ranks fifth in sacks and sixth in tackles for loss.
"I’m looking forward to showing scouts that I am worthy of being drafted," said Oghobaase. "I have been working hard for the last month in workouts so that I can prove I am healthy and my body is in good shape. Hopefully

We are going all out on QBs this year
we are trading up for Colt McCoy, Clausen, and Tebow. Oh wait I forgot, our coach isn’t Gruden the QB collector.
