That Dog Won't Hunt

Rainbow-poodle_medium

via www.myspaceantics.com

First, let's get this out of the way. At CB; Glover Quinn, Jacques Reeves, Brice McCain, Antwaun Moulden, and Fred Bennett...that dog will hunt. Quin and Reeves are both respectable. Brice McCain is completely adequate coming in at the Nickel. I'm not saying you couldn't upgrade the position in the draft, but why do it at the expense of a player that is already doing a better than average job when you have other positions that are underachieving? You want to draft a CB to put one of these guys on the bench?

FS; Eugene Wilson, Dominique Barber and Troy Nolan....that dog won't hunt all the time. None of these players excite me even when they are on the field. Eugene Wilson should be mentoring his eventual replacement at the very least and I'm not convinced that Barber is that guy.

WLB; Zac Diles and Xavier Adibi; that dog won't hunt all the time. These players are average NFL caliber but don't bring any intangibles to the position. WLB could be upgraded in the draft. There are very good WLBs in the draft who could come onto the Texans and be getting schooled by the coaches to take this position to another level.

OL; Duane Brown, Eric Winston, Kasey Studdard, Chris Myers, Mike Brisiel, Wade Smith, Chris White, and Antoine Caldwell....that dog won't hunt all the time. Winston is above average. Duane Brown has not approached average and he could be upgraded easily in this draft. He was a reach when he was drafted and it is saying something that the position could be instantly upgraded with a first year player. This position should be an elite player. The interior line? What's one more average Joe on the unemployment line? I won't insult anyone more than I already have and say anymore.

DT; Amobi Okoye, Shaun Cody, DelJuan Robinson, Jeff Zgonina and Frank Okam...that dog won't hunt. There are four players here that would have trouble finding a job in the NFL if they were cut loose by the Texans. The other is an underachieving former first-round pick, who is not exactly leading the way with his stellar play. The Texans need an upgrade and they need added depth. Let's face it; if they don't send Jeff Zgonina into retirement, then they are fooling themselves and all their fans. It will be so easy to pick a DT in this draft who can play right away.

So for the above reasons, the Texans need to draft DT, OL, FS and WLB in the first four rounds. They don't need CB. They shouldn't draft CB. The three starting CBs they have now do not need to go to the bench.

If the Texans follow through, they will be hunting for trophies this year! I don't care what John McClain says...

Tim, isn't that your dog?

I do think a CB would be nice to have early, though. There’s a lot of depth, and it seems to be a good draft for them. One injury at CB, and I’d go out on a short limb and say we’re screwed.

I really wouldn’t mind trading down and getting an extra pick, too.

That's not a limb,

it’s a nub.
We would be big time screwed if Quinn or Reeves got hurt. We all remember Reeves got hurt in training camp and really did not see the field much last year. I am concerned about the CB position and I really do think it needs to be addressed no latter than the third (though I prefer the second).

Okay

To both bfd and Bbb. What if Amobi Okoye is injured? What if Wilson and Barber are injured as in last year? Do we really need to see Jeff Zgonina back on the field? And, Busing?

If Reeves or Quin go down, we have McCain. And, Bennett can fill in for a few weeks without a major dropoff. I’m not sure about Molden. Never really seen him play.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Apr 15, 2010 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Trade down

and there is a possibility to have 5 picks in the first 4 rounds

Then you can add a CB for depth & possibility of injuries

If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?

by Shake on Apr 15, 2010 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I can see that

What I am having trouble with is taking a CB high. If the Texans do that, who sits? If you take a CB high, you expect him to play, I think. In that case, who, Reeves or Quin, sits?

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Apr 15, 2010 7:58 PM CDT up reply actions

This cheese might stand alone...

But I love the idea of taking a CB high and moving Quin to FS. I still don’t think Quin has the lateral speed to stay at CB, but with his tackling and coverage skills, I believe he would be an elite FS. Seriously.

Drafting a CB gives you more flexibility here, especially because we are going to be in nickel and dime packages quite a bit for at least two games.

Many have theorized the Quin is moving to FS

I can’t remember if Kubes ever commented on that. I thought he did, but not sure. I thought he said no. I could be making it up.

I’m sure he has thought about it.

If they draft CB, that will have to be one of the first questions that Pancakes or someone that has access to him has to ask.

Three starting CBs, Two CB positions….with the exception of nickel and dime packages which aren’t every down, with the exception of a couple games a year…

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Apr 15, 2010 8:49 PM CDT up reply actions

This is from a story on HoustonTexans.com right after the draft last year

Gary Kubiak: (on if CB Glover Quin will move to free safety from corner) “No, we plan on playing him outside. We like the fact that he can go in and play the nickel position, so I think that is where he’s going to go from the start.”

I know his thinking could have changed since then.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Apr 15, 2010 8:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Also, if Earl Thomas is available

I believe there is a high probability they will take him and that eliminates concerns about moving Quin to FS.

better than average

Our CB position is not better than average by any stretch of the imagination. All of our guys would be depth on any good team. We need a corner. Wilson might have issues getting hurt, but hes solid when he plays. Barber was decent late in the season when they used him instead of Busing. FS is a need but its lower priority than CB and DT. I also dont think Duane Brown is nearly as bad as some people claim. His run blocking is quite good and I think his pass blocking would be better if we actually used a blocking TE like ever or a running back who chips. I guess if you think he should be a guy on an island who can stop elite pass rushers on a regular basis than ya he hasnt lived up to the 1st round grade.

The entire interior line needs to be replenished

I don’t have confidence in any of the starters. That’s my opinion and I believe it is shared by many. Duane Brown at LT is below average by any measurement. There are draft picks who would could step into the NFL tomorrow and I would have more confidence in them.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Apr 15, 2010 7:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I should add

the depth behind Duane Brown leaves me with absolutely no confidence that Matt Schaub would live beyond one game if Brown were to be injured.

Your draft picks--are you standing too close to McClain for too long

While your logic is not that bad, and your picks and analysis of present players damned close to 100% with a +/-20% error. If we actually got the shut down corner Wilson is hyped to be, maybe our def. line could get to the QB enough to disrupt the passing game enough to eliminate 10-14 pts a game, since there would not be glaring holes in the outside flat and long ball. While we were humbled by two teams in the run game the Texans weren’t flat out terrible stopping the run last season. We were killed in giving up too many yards thru the air and not being able for us to run the ball; there by allowing offenses to stay on the field all day. Get a Haz-Mat suit to wear when around Mc Clain since he has no clue and is a shocking situation to have writing for a city of Houston’s status.

I'm offended by your remarks

I am opposite of John McClain as far as I know. He is saying CB and RB in the 1st two rounds. I clearly stated here that CB is outside of the 1st 4 rounds. I didn’t even mention RB. But look up. I said OL, DT, FS, and WLB in no particular order. McClain CB and RB.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

Mc Clain is offending us all

Mc Clain is still whinning about Cushing over Mathews; and most likely that animal that has yet to do his thing on the outside from the year before instead of a running back that N.Orleans uses, and see how he is doing.

by RonL on Apr 16, 2010 7:29 PM CDT up reply actions

CB in later rounds

I will agree with you if not Wilson then wait until 3-4 rounds for a corner. There isn’t a sure thing running back in the first to begin with. And Mario needs help to full fill our package.

by RonL on Apr 16, 2010 7:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Cont'd Your draft picks--

If we can not get Wilson in first and that is a strong possibility if Dan Williams is still there I want him.

by RonL on Apr 16, 2010 7:20 PM CDT reply actions

Running back in first round

To pick a running back in the draft first round at 20 is not a good plan(unless the second coming of Earl Campbell is out there and I did not hear of it). If he is I don’t think the 20th pick would do it!

by RonL on Apr 16, 2010 7:24 PM CDT reply actions

New job for Mc Clain

The chronicles outside reporting is very poor as of lately. While I doubt I would heed his advise I could at least look at it and do the opposite. Hell he might even know something about fishing since he does enough with his football coverage.
