Not a long-term deal, but SS Bernard Pollard signed his tender today via John McClain (RT via Connor Barwin because I won't follow Pancakes). The one-year tender is for $2.65MM, which would buy a lot of crawfish were he into that.

Pretty good chunck of change

for someone who was unemployed when last season started. He certainly earned it. I can’t wait to see how he does this season. Needless to say he’s already made a fan out of me.

by WhiskeyR on Apr 2, 2010 2:20 PM CDT reply actions

I agree

He has definitely made a fan of me already. I like that we offered only a year. Gives us more time scope him out and see if he’s worth long term money.

On another not LT Flozel Adams and Safety Ken hamlin are now free agents. What you think about that? That could add some veterans to our young defense.

by Big_T on Apr 3, 2010 6:37 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I think it's an interesting question

One article I read made it sound like at least one of those two wasn’t consistent or disciplined enough. I’d be interested to see what Smithiak makes of those two. They seem to be good at finding diamonds in the rough.

by BattleRedFan on Apr 3, 2010 1:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I am pleased he'll be back in the deep steel blue in 2010

I just want him locked up long-term cause BP quickly became one of my favorite Texans last season.

Yep

I couldn’t agree with you more. Maybe, we can sign him to a long term deal during the season.

by Jahon on Apr 2, 2010 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

prove that last year was not a fluke. In KC, he wasn’t bad, but I’ve heard that he was inconsistent. So if he has gotten past that or the coaches are playing him to his strengths, then he should be able to repeat

I would like to say....

I figured that he would get a one year deal… I want to see him repeat. and if he is still blowing off helmets and tearing acl’s then mid season offer 4-6yr deal..

Go Texans!

by Taco Joe on Apr 2, 2010 4:31 PM CDT reply actions

Well he could break character for once...

plus I think you could get Pollard (or any player for that fact) cheaper, with a mid-season contract, instead of waiting for the end of the season, where they players are getting shopped by other teams… If Southern Oklahoma gets interested in Pollard because he ends a couple careers this season against them, i would expect nothing less than Jerrah to throw in the wife and kids with a huge unreasonable contract. Him and Davis you know will pay anyone for hopes of another superbowl ring

Go Texans!

by Taco Joe on Apr 2, 2010 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions

so, do we play the Patriots this year?

And which Patriot’s knee will Bonecrusher ruin this season?

/checks schedule, Patriots not listed.

//Will have to wait for playoffs

///I know he didn’t actually injure Welker, but I would like to think Pollard’s mere presence scared Welker’s ACL into exploding spontaneously

by grungedave on Apr 2, 2010 5:20 PM CDT reply actions

I honestly think

Tom Brady is now afraid of the Texans Defense. Not only do we have the guy who almost ended his career, but we spanked that @$$ for our last win.

Go Texans!

by Taco Joe on Apr 2, 2010 8:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Only thing we need now is Cooper Manning once he gets out of college

that way we’ll have the trifecta, Bonecrusher, our defense, & another Manning to ruin his Super Bowl run (like Eli & Seyton did). Key thing to remember is that by the time Cooper gets out of college, we may be looking for Schaub’s future replacement

I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.

Does Trent Dilfer have a son at Fresno State?

Dilfer is an alumni & did win a Super Bowl (or rather Ray Lewis, Ed Reed & the rest of that Raven defense won one for him)

exactly what it looked like to me - Wes tried to make a Barry Sanders cut ...

to avoid a hit from BP – but Wes is no Barry Sanders

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is

by WarWolf on Apr 4, 2010 5:30 PM CDT up reply actions

I wish we could clone Barry Sanders...

then I would spend a 1st rounder on a RB.

Oh well, I’d settle for Barry’s son in 4-5 years.

Words cannot express...

The sheer jubilation of this signing has me a bit lightheaded.

Fuck Dunta indeed.

Polly’s back…Demeco’s back…

Now THAT is how you treat your veterans.

This is going to be a VERY fun season. Hurry up offseason…it’s fuckin’ time!!!

heh, I read the title and thought -- Isn't it a little late for April Fool's?

=D I’m so glad this is for real!

I’m feeling even better about this coming season! Thank you for the news!
and wow! Smithiak is on the ball!

Maybe Rick Smith is a ballhawk in his own right.

by BattleRedFan on Apr 2, 2010 8:53 PM CDT reply actions

What stands out most...

About this particular signing and the Demeco signing is how both were done fairly easily, and before the end of the offseason. Neither player had to be franchise tagged because unlike Dunta they simply wanted to play for a winner, and were willing to take reasonable and not gaudy contracts to do so.

If there was ever a contract that really felt like it was the ultimate F*** DUNTA contract, it is this one.

And damn does it feel great to have Polly back.

by Fuzion on Apr 2, 2010 10:31 PM CDT up reply actions

And also...

I was really thinking about this, and if you consider that Smithiak just signed our two biggest defensive priorities still on our team in this offseason while offloading the T-Mac of the Texans without hurting the team at all.

I don’t care if we draft the biggest flop in the first round…

This has been a successful offseason.

And you know what I love about Smithiak?

This ain’t over. I expect one more signing that on the surface seems weak or mediocre, and will be criticized by the pundits and analysts as being such, but by the end of the season they will once again be singing the praises of the talent scouts of the Texans.

Oh and now…the draft just can NOT get here soon enough.

by Fuzion on Apr 2, 2010 10:34 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

I think the signing you are looking for is Wade Smith

Not everyone was for the signing and it was a bit questionable. But if Smithiak gets that one right, they have some talent.

by theaxeeffect4311 on Apr 3, 2010 12:37 AM CDT up reply actions

Nope...not even...

Considering that Smithiak signed Antonio Smith as the big “free agency” period move. Bernard Pollard was not signed until preseason had begun.

So, I have a feeling that Smithiak is going to find another team’s castoff that fits our system to a ‘T’ and bring him in to show the world he’s a legit player. And he will. And we will all marvel at what the Smithiak Brain Trust is capable of.

by Fuzion on Apr 3, 2010 12:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Just FYI

Pollard was signed after week 2 of the regular season last year.

Dunno why I’m nit-picking like this, but yeah.

by Autra on Apr 3, 2010 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought so...

But I’d rather be shooting early than late in this case. Hell, it makes the point more potent. Lol. So thank you!

by Fuzion on Apr 3, 2010 10:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Good signing

Pollard played well last year and it is good to see the team reward him for that. I like that it is just a one year deal too, he will have to maintain that play in order to get a bigger payday. I like the guy alot, I love the Bone Crusher attitude.

Can’t wait to see him “Knock the piss out someone”.

by wasteph on Apr 2, 2010 11:46 PM CDT reply actions

Wow,

I don’t believe how we got him for that cheap of a price. I guess smithiak wants to see him play a whole year before they want to think long-term. Good choice not to sign him long term either, so he won’t be the next will demps. I want to see bone crusher knock the piss outta vince young this year.

Not much of a choice for him, really, was there?

Other than sitting out some of the season and losing money. It was his RFA tender, not some new contract they worked out.

by Tim on Apr 3, 2010 12:06 PM CDT reply actions

He is...

maybe he saw what DeMeco did and it’s a case of people following a good example.

I also love that he said the defense could use a couple of pieces….agreed. 1st and 2nd round picks to the defense!

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Apr 3, 2010 12:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Great to see BoneCrusher in the fold

Along with Cushing Ryans Mario and the rest, Texans D will be top of the line

I would like to see Haden Wilson or McCourtney drafted for the CB spot

Pollard added a level of intimidation that affected opponents last year

Brady, Jackson, Wayne, Manning, and Young were examples of this

I hope Kubiak allows BP to play his game and doesn’t wimp out like the Chiefs did

Here’s a BoneCrusher highlight reel from 2009

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYgl5NnpdAs&feature=related

OK, don’t watch this “Tribute to Brady” video unless you really h8 Brady and the Patriots and like BoneCrusher – funny stuff:

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is

After watching that first video...

I wanna go knock the piss outta somebody!

I love his attitude, and the way the beginning of the video shows him basically mentoring Cushing…shiiiiiivers.
