Open Thread: Countdown To The 2010 NFL Draft

The day is finally here. All we have to do is make it through the next several painful hours of our respective days, and the 2010 NFL Draft shall be upon us. After the jump, I'll let you know what we'll be doing here on BRB for the Draft over the next few days.

Star-divide

This is the first of your open countdown threads. These are designed for all of you to discuss any thoughts, rumors, scenarios, targets, and the like as we inch toward the draft. At 5:30 p.m. CST today, the official open thread for tonight's festivities will appear on the main page. That's your spot to comment as the draft itself goes down. Once your Houston Texans make their pick (or trade), we'll get a separate post up where everyone can comment on the newest Texan and/or development. The aforementioned open thread will stay open throughout tonight, so return there to comment on the remainder of the draft proceedings.

On Friday morning, we hope to get a more detailed entry up about what the Texans did on Thursday night. Additionally, I'll open another countdown thread for everyone to comment in as we head toward the second and third rounds starting on Friday evening. At 4 p.m. CST, we'll get another official open thread up for Friday night's festivities. Again, that'll be your spot to comment as the second and third rounds unfold. After each Texans move or pick in the second and third round, we'll have separate posts up announcing the newest Texan and/or development; that'll be your spot to wax poetic about what the Texans did. As with Thursday night, the open thread for the second and third rounds will be there for all of us to comment as Friday night progresses.

Come Saturday morning, we hope to get detailed entries up for what the Texans did in the second and third rounds. We'll have yet another open thread (and we'll open more as necessary) go up on the main page at 8:30 a.m. CST for you to contribute your thoughts live as Rounds Four through Seven happen, and we'll get separate posts up as each new Texan is dubbed and/or trade(s) is/are made.

On Sunday or Monday, the goal is to post detailed entries on those who were made Texans in the fourth through seventh rounds.

Got it? Good.

One more note, and then I'll shut up. Remember that BRB can be accessed from your mobile device (included but not limited to cell phones), so don't let being away from your computer--be it at work, Reliant, a bar, a draft party, or what have you--keep you from chiming in. We're all anxious to read what you have to say as the draft unfolds.

Alright. I'm done. Let's do this.

The Houston Chronicle calls Fresno State RB Ryan Mathews “the most likely pick” for the Texans at No. 20 overall.

This, of course, is assuming Mathews isn’t gone by then. Mock draft guru Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News predicts Mathews will get no further than the Seahawks at No. 14 overall. If Mathews is off the board when the Texans go on the clock, they’ll then be fully expected to draft a defensive back.

mcfadden?

Appearing on Mike and Mike in the Morning Friday, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen mentioned Darren McFadden as a player that might surprisingly be traded over the next three days.

McFadden came up as Mort was naming players on the block, beginning with Albert Haynesworth and ending with unsigned restricted free agent Shawne Merriman. Merriman, though, can’t be traded until he inks his one-year tender. The No. 4 overall pick in 2008, McFadden has already missed seven games due to injury in his first two seasons and averaged just 3.9 yards a carry.

A prediction

There will be a big, shocking trade tonight. Maybe someone pulls the trigger on Big Ben in the top ten, or St. Louis somehow moves the #1 pick (even if they don’t get full value in exchange…they just don’t want to pay a rookie so much money). Something earthshaking will occur.

There’s talk the Washington wants Bradford. I’ve come to doubt almost every rumor like this, but it’s still fun.

yeah why does everyone think the Raiders

are going to spend the 8th pick on O line or Defense? They don’t make picks that actually make their football team better.

I look for them to draft Jacoby Ford from Clemson (4.28 combine 40), Al Davis has already wet himself thinking about this guy.

I honestly

wouldn’t be surprised if The Raiders traded their 1st and McFadden for Ben. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Steelers traded Ben to the Raiders for their 1st rounder along with McFadden and possibly an additional pick. This is why I can see it happening.

I like the idea of Cleveland moving up for Bradford. Mainly because it will be the second first round pick they will have used on a QB in three years and that has never been done before (or so I’ve heard). Plus it means that Cleveland may try dealing more of their players for more picks and become more desperate. I don’t think D’Qwell Jackson would work as a WLB so I don’t think we’d benefit but would be interesting.

Query

Am I the only one who thinks the Rams are out of their minds taking Bradford No. 1 instead of Suh? I understand the notion that you don’t want to pay a DT first-overall-pick money, but c’mon…Suh is clearly the best player in the draft. Shouldn’t the Rams be taking the best player in the draft (assuming, of course, they can’t trade back, which is always the preference)?

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

by Tim on Apr 22, 2010 8:46 AM CDT reply actions

Careful, Tim

The Lions FO might assassinate you for putting stuff like that out.

No, seriously..How can you not draft Suh or even Mccoy before Bradford, even if you have no quarterback.

by leacheatsbabies on Apr 22, 2010 8:49 AM CDT up reply actions

To me

It’s a lot like the Mario v. Reggie/VY debate. I think we all know how that one turned out. I’m a Bradford fan, but Suh is a better player. Bradford’s best years came behind the best line in college football, a line probably better than the Ram’s line. He’ll have a steep learning curve in the pros. I’m a fan, but I probably wouldn’t draft him first overall- if he’d had an awesome year last year, it’d be a different story.

by JimboTexan on Apr 22, 2010 8:49 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think its fair to put Bradfored in with Reggie VY

He doesn’t have the same questions that they did. His biggest concern is injuries.

Reggie was god’s gift to football and no one had any questions…at least I feel like I heard that somewhere in 2006.

by JimboTexan on Apr 22, 2010 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I'll disagree

While Suh, theoretically, is the best player in the draft, I honestly don’t consider him an elite prospect. Seriously, owning Charlie Tanner for a game is not exactly difficult. So, I could see where they would be more interested in a potential franchise QB.

That said, I wouldn’t be that interested in Bradford first, either. In fact, I’d aggressively try and trade down and collect talent (I say that a lot, don’t I?). The Rams need help everywhere, and you could move back and still take a Dan Williams and a CB and some o-linemen. That’s what I would do.

A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.
http://www.battleredblog.com

by bigfatdrunk on Apr 22, 2010 8:55 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think you trade the 1st overall

you seldom get the opportunity to spend 5 months on the clock deciding which player can turn your franchise around.

If after all that analysis, they believe Bradford is the guy..then maybe he’ll become a great player eventually. However, I still don’t see how you pass up on Suh. Experts, football people, scouts and even retarded sports writers all unanimously agree when it comes to this guy being a once-in-a-lifetime talent.

He dominated the Big 12 all year and came up with 5 freakin sacks in his biggest game (Big 12 championship against a good Texas OL). The guy SHOULD be the #1 overall.

by leacheatsbabies on Apr 22, 2010 9:10 AM CDT up reply actions

McCoy

Some places have McCoy ranked higher. Scouts Inc, for one.

I watched Suh just twice, against Kansas (I think) and UT. The Horns line got pushed around all season, and EffGD (surprisingly) couldn’t adjust. Suh’s game against UT met expectations but didn’t exceed them. In the other game, he was active but just kinda meh. I definitely don’t believe he’s a once in a lifetime talent, that’s for sure.

Ha!

I don’t know that I’m right, but I caught a number of Suh’s games this year (5-6 of them) and he was consistently dominant. I think he’s one of the most dominant players I’ve seen in the last 5 years. He’s physical and quick, and reads the play well. Understandably, abusing the UT line wasn’t new or special, but he went above and beyond.

That being said, I still wouldn’t take him #1 but that’s solely because of the money. The rookie salaries for the NFL are so horribly fucked that the #1 spot is basically forced to take a QB.

by DisplacedTexan on Apr 22, 2010 9:40 AM CDT up reply actions

Mel Kiper Jr. on Suh

by leacheatsbabies on Apr 22, 2010 11:48 AM CDT up reply actions

I think it's always smart to grab a QB over a DT...

however, I’m real skeptical that an underclassman can be a franchise QB due to recent history of underclassmen QBs.

However, I like Bradford more than Clausen (who I think is gonna be a bust).

OK, so we have another ROY

Wasn’t Vince Young a ROY when he first got drafted? Or at least in the conversation? It’s great that our prospects can produce quickly, but does that cement them as elite players? As a buddy of mine puts it, “Consistency is key.” True consistency doesn’t come from one season or from a contract year performance (coughDUNTAcough)

I mean, if we had a ROY produce the same numbers his second year around instead of a sophomore slump, we woudn’t be worried that the Texans would have to draft Ryan Mathews.

Just a thought.

I hope you're right

I went back and looked at Lance’s mock from last year and he wasn’t as dead-on balls accurate as I remembered (damned old age). One thing I hope he is right about is Jax passing on Spiller and taking Derrick Morgan instead. The last thing we need is for our defense to have to chase Chris Johnson AND Spiller around the field twice a year. He also has Linval Joseph going to the Chargers in the first round. I hope not.

by LedTexan on Apr 22, 2010 10:53 AM CDT up reply actions

He changed from Matthews to Cushing the day before the draft. However, I think most people believed we were going with with Cushing or Matthews with that pick.

It’s not a bad mock, nor is it overwhelming. In other words, he’s about as good at this as most people are. Not that that’s bad or anything, but he does make mistakes.

by Bobobigbro on Apr 22, 2010 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Here's what I'd like to see, and...

What I’m thinking might happen…

1st Round – We go DB of some kind depending on who’s available, while trying to trade down with the same thought involved. I don’t think the F.O. is as sold on Matthews as they’ve led on, and are hoping San Diego will want him bad enough to trade up. I think our F.O. wants a bruiser more than a system back right now. That’s the need. We can’t get the short yards, so you go and get the short yards. You meet that need in round 2 (maybe 3) with a Toby Gerhart. (sp?)

2nd Round – Depending on what the war room is hearing and what trades have been made, they go RB with Toby Gerhart, or hold off until round 3 and see what’s available there. If RB isn’t taken, I think they go with DT here or O-lineman once again depending on who is available at the time. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them try to trade up if a particular guy they do want somehow slips from round one, especially with the dual 6’s.

3rd Round – They go RB if Toby hasn’t been picked, and grab the needed bruiser, otherwise they go Oline or DT depending on who is available, or even look to grab a slipping CB such as a Kareem Jackson (though this would be a shocker). Lots of options based on who is available.

4th Round – Here, they look for best player available at all positions. No target need here, except maybe CB, but at this point they want whomever they feel will have the most longterm impact.

5th Round – They now shift to best athlete and most freakiest athletic ability here, while still looking at areas of need, but not focusing on those. It’s all dependent on what’s available, and thus is about as much in the air as anything else. Don’t be surprised if they nab someone everyone likes, but nobody expects to go this high.

6th Round Pick 1 and 2 – If they haven’t traded one of these to move around a little bit for better options, then they go freak athlete and positional need here with one and then the other.

7th Round – QB. It’s Kubes MO. Period. The kid with the big arm if we get lucky? Heh.

I know that’s not really narrowing anything down more than we’ve narrowed down already, but I figured I’d share my wants and what I see happening from the last few drafts for the Texans.

Let’s consider that McCluster is still going to be available way late and would be a steal. No, he’s not the answer at HB, but he would be another vital weapon with some time to really learn the NFL level game.

dive/wrap up the legs. Aside from The Patrick Willis, no defender could stop a power guy uphigh…momentum (weightspeed?) would be on the side of the power RB at full steam. Taking the legs out gets it done.

An upright runner’s legs aren’t protected at all so there’s serious injury concerns in the making.

NFLN also.

Not a shocker, because he is a more fluid and true CB than Haden. Maybe Haden at 20 is still a possibility. Lol.

by Antho10000 on Apr 22, 2010 11:39 AM CDT up reply actions

Sorry...

I shouldn’t have gotten your hopes up for Haden — like Kiper did earlier this week.

Haden won’t fall to 20, and if he does, I honestly hope we don’t take him. He’s another Dunta in the making.

by Antho10000 on Apr 22, 2010 11:43 AM CDT up reply actions

Wait up there Fuzion.

I can think of MANY things worse than getting Haden at 20. I would take him in a heartbeat at 20.

Confucius say "man who enter door sideways going to Bangkok".

by Bobobigbro on Apr 22, 2010 11:43 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes there are worse...

Such as TJ…however, that doesn’t mean Haden is the guy we need. Yeah, he’d fill the need, but at what price? Ultimately, we don’t need another prima-donna. There’s also a lot of better things we can do at 20 than Haden. Your point is moot.

by Fuzion on Apr 22, 2010 11:45 AM CDT up reply actions

Point is not moot.

Haden was the consensus #1 CB going into this draft and since that time he ran a “slow” 40 at the combine so now all of his actual on field play is discounted by running in shorts inside a dome. That sounds about right.

Confucius say "man who enter door sideways going to Bangkok".

by Bobobigbro on Apr 22, 2010 11:49 AM CDT up reply actions

And the play of one Kyle Wilson

Being a super fluid, super solid CB has noooothing to do with it. Haden is not a truly fluid CB. He’s good, but he’s not great at the position. He will be another Dunta. I’m just saying. Not a bust or anything, but not good value for a number 20 pick either.

by Fuzion on Apr 22, 2010 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Wilson is another Dunta

he’s physical and smart but I think he’ll get beat deep by better WRs and getting eaten up on quick timing routes.

by leacheatsbabies on Apr 22, 2010 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions

He's not a Dunta type...

I’ll give what you said about him, but that wasn’t Dunta at first. It was how Dunta turned out to be due to numerous factors.

While I’d rather have Haden over Dunta, I know he won’t fall to us, and neither will Wilson. Meaning there is a chance we can grab Earl Thomas. I would most assuredly NOT be opposed to that move.

by Fuzion on Apr 22, 2010 12:00 PM CDT up reply actions

You sure "know" alot, Fuz...

That Haden WON’T fall to 20…
Exactly what kind of pro player he’ll be…

Must be nice.

Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.

by beefy on Apr 22, 2010 2:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Anyone who's watched Haden...

Knows he’s a stud CB for college, but his movement, his agility, do not equate to the NFL level. He will be quick, but he won’t be able to really be the true shut down corner. He’ll be good in man to man, but any zone coverage and he’ll be beat.

by Fuzion on Apr 22, 2010 2:14 PM CDT up reply actions

And it won't matter

Since he won’t fall to 20 anyways.

by Fuzion on Apr 22, 2010 11:46 AM CDT up reply actions

But last Friday, I was up at Nick’s Place for lunch and to listen to 1560’s live broadcast…

Sitting at the table next to me was ‘the head guy at the Chronicle’(whatever that means), Pancakes, Hoffy, and Lil Dicky Justice.

It was crazy…all of them sitting together must’ve torn a hole in the time/space continuum, because for a few minutes there I kept thinking how cool it would be to draft a RB while dancing topless with VY and some thai hookers. And then write a factually iffy, but comepletly homerish newpaper article about it.

Im debating

whether I should explain to him what the word “best” mean or just ignore the ignorant.

I’ve heard ridiculous statements about Dunta Robinson before but this one tops em all.

Hahahha the sweet taste of ultimate victory is always worth it.

But i’ll save my rage for later when we draft Ryan Mathews.

by Jordann on Apr 22, 2010 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe...

Atlanta will take Joe Haden right before us…and he’ll be a bust too.

Haha. And then the Texans DON’T take Matthews. Man…that’d be a good draft just with those things right there! Lol.

by Fuzion on Apr 22, 2010 2:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Can't wait till...

Dunta shows his true colors. Which are brown and another shade of brown borderline green, if you get my drift.

not enough

ebonics used to think it was HB23 and his love for Ryan Mathews…

by Taco Joe on Apr 22, 2010 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Good guess but even if

Bryan used ebonics he would write a freaking paragraph and would be known as the great ebonics pontificator. They would put his picture on the front of Kool cigarettes for all to see. Kool would also ask him to write a little personal bio on the box under his picture but he would want to write something about the tampa 2 defense. It wouldn’t fit on the box so they’d probably just say screw it, we’ll just use a picture.

Would be nice

to see JJ run past Dunta for a TD, all the while waving to him.

by kaizer on Apr 22, 2010 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions

The TD dance from JJ in front of Dunta would just be calssic.

by Bobobigbro on Apr 22, 2010 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Here's what I think will happen

Schaub throws to JJ —> Dunta tackles —> JJ fumbles —> JJ gets back up, picks up the ball and takes it for a TD, while Dunta was celebrating his FF in the background

by kaizer on Apr 22, 2010 3:14 PM CDT up reply actions

fail

Come on, we all know the fumbler would be a RB.

What would be beneficial

To us as far as the first 19 picks go in order for someone like ET, Haden, or DWill to fall to us? Don’t know if anyone has talked about this yet, but just curious what to be hoping for during the early picks….

First and foremost we need...

Atlanta to trade down, as most mocks I’ve seen have them taking either Thomas or Haden or Wilson even. So needless to say, the sooner they get outta the way, the better.

by Fuzion on Apr 22, 2010 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions

The mocks I've seen have the Falcons

taking that DE from Michigan.

Which means nothing.

I'm curious...

Has anyone considered how no matter who we pick in the 1st round, how much pressure is going to be on that pick from a fanbase stand point?

Consider last year’s 1st round pick was Brian Cushing. Most fans who don’t know better will expect our 1st round pick to be as good as, or somewhere close to, Cushing’s insane ability.

That…would SUCK. Talk about big shoes to fill.

If we had the 32nd pick

I wouldn’t be so broken up about who we pick.

ill be honest, it made it a lot easier to handle if we actually do end up drafting him

Now that he has been digitized

and had all kinds of computers hooked up to him while running laps, swimming, and riding a stationary bike. All of the calculations came back and it has been determined that he will be a good NFL player and worthy of a first round pick since he is the 2nd best running back in the draft, amirite?

Just giving you a hard time. But in all reality, I don’t think it’s the best use of our first round pick. If they do pick him, I sure hope I’m wrong.

And if I take myself out when they pick Mathews it sure won’t be with baby asprin. I’ll make it one hell of a ride before I go.

NFLN is saying...

Spiller will drop past 15 with the NY Giants. Meaning there is still a chance that Spiller could slip to 20.

If Spiller is there, do you take him?

depending on how the board looks. But teams would shit their pants if we took Spiller.

i have a very bad feeling that we’ll end up with Ryan Mathews.. with all the hype Wilson is getting!

BUT

The best scenario would be Dallas trading up to us @ 20 if Dez Bryant falls in our lap.. because they would need to pick him before Cincy gets on the clock. And then we could pick up an extra 2nd rounder and Devin McCourtey
