Pollard will clue him in - not to worry

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is

by WarWolf on Apr 22, 2010 8:41 PM CDT up reply actions

hes the most nfl ready CB in this draft

kiper has him ranked 2nd behind Haden

hes not flashy but he can do it all

play zone changes directions effortlessly with very fluid hips.. plays man reads the QBs eyes which leads to making plays which the texans have said they will get an impact player in the first round and he started i think 4 yrs at Alabama

hes under the radat but the best possible fit, hes a safe sure pick thats not flashy but VERY productive like an OL, jus takes care of business

by HB23 on Apr 22, 2010 9:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Didn't start 4 years

But he did start something like 12 of 13 games as a freshman, and 38 in a row or something like that, so he brings some durability to the table too. I’m trying really hard to hate this pick because they always pan out better when I do, but I’m having a hard time – this guy is going to be solid.

I don't really understand why you'd be for Wilson and not be okay with Jackson

The Texans have great evaluators, and they play the same position.

I mean I can understand the preference, but worse than Mathews?

I'm not thrilled, given our choices, but I'm perfectly fine with it.

As I would have been if you had told me yesterday that we’d take Jackson. It was someone I was fully prepared for us to get.

Yep

I basically predicted this in our 2nd round pick in the SBN mock.

I saw him projected as a top-40 talent.

I don’t know why everyone seems so shocked. I guess taking someone @ 20 when they are “top-40” can be upsetting, but it’s far enough away from the top pick that you can varying opinions on players.

I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that the Texans wanted to trade down, but couldn’t get enough compensation to alleviate their fears that they would miss out on Jackson.

Well

it’s been a common theme in Smithiak land to pick a player at a position of need, just grabbing one of the better ones as opposed to the best one (remmeber all the LB talk last year, Cushing wasn’t seen as the best rookie LB)

They’ve had a decent return on that idea, so let’s see how it goes.

i know!!

y do people feel he would’ve fallen?? apparently the jets were interested in jackson over both mccourty and wilson. Bellicheck picked McCourty over WIlson, i think it’s obvious Wilson wasn’t as highly ranked as we thoght he was, at least not in the minds of scouts and teams who actually scheme for these players to have a position on the field. Jackson was a STUD pickup by the Texans, i’ve been in love w/ him since the beginning of the college season.

You're making it out as if he was going to be there at 50.

Wilson – WAC

Jackson – SEC

NFL.com's CB ratings

Haden – 8.6
Wilson – 8.4
Jackson – 8.3
McCourty – 8.0

I think Jackson was above Wilson the entire time on our board cause of the scheme he ran at Bama. He is the same size as Wilson, is faster than Wilson, and comes from the SEC.

a base 4-3? mostly man coverage except for zone against passing teams? Wilson and Mccourty played in the same type of systems.

Scouts Inc. on Kareem Jackson:

Scouts Inc. Pros: Excellent at anticipating routes and can keep eyes on quarterback without losing track of receiver. Mid-points high-low routes in zone coverage. Appears comfortable lining up close to the line of scrimmage. Squeezes receivers to the sideline. Aggressive and not afraid to jump up. Plays with a swagger. Fluid hips and can change directions quickly. Quick feet and can stick with receivers coming out of breaks, Plays under control, keeps feet under him and doesn’t waste any motion.

Scouts Inc. Cons: Fails to wrap up but gets ball carrier to ground more times than not. Can get caught trying to make a play on the ball when should wrap receiver up for short gain but rarely. Takes too long to shed blocks.

I love it when people think a player is a sure thing because the “COW WHORES” draft them. Also just give this pick a chance. This is’nt like drafting Travis Johnson in 2005. We selected the right position and someone ranked a little lower who might end up better than Wilson.

I'd love mount cody

but he doesn’t fit what Bill Kollar has demonstrated that he wants in a DL.

I said it briefly in some other thread, but I think the only way we ever take a true NT is if that NT is able to penetrate and get after the quarterback first, and happens to have amazing assmass as a secondary quality, not a primary quality.

Unfortunately for those of us who want a true NT, that kind of player is hard to find, so in order to get a player like that, we will likely have to pick high in the first round (or have DWill fall to us in the second round.)

by Tailgate Andy on Apr 22, 2010 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions

LOOOOOOOOOOOVE this pick.

People are overanalyzing this, the reality is Kareem Jackson is quite possibly the biggest darkhorse of this draft. I’ve said this ALL along. I think he’s the best corner of this draft, he’s a high character guy, has a nack for intercepting the ball, plays physical, fast, well-coached, seen the best competition on a day-day basis. big, long arms. I think he is VERY underrated. I’m so happy the Texans didn’t get impatient and scared when the Chargers traded to get Matthews, they stayed solid, and picked up my bhoi Kareem. LOOOVE this pick. Texans draft history is excellent in the Smithiak regime, i don’t understand why people are taking Kiper and online mock drafts to guage a player’s value/skill. Jackson is BEAUTIFUL. lol, tyson alu alu…. McCoy > Tebow.

Scouts Inc cons on Dan Williams
Scouts Inc. Cons: Frequently comes out of stance high and lacks ability to counter once engaged with blockers. Closing burst is good but not great. Lacks elite quickness off the snap of the ball. Motor can run hot and cold as endurance appears to be an issue.

people are overrating

dan williams, i think we value lamarr houston better b/c he can rush the passer. We already have a decent run defense, so some “stuffer” isn’t necessary especially since Okoye is holdin down the front as far as the run is concerned. DWill isn’t an interior defensive lineman, i don’t understand why people “want him” so bad. he doesn’t fit our system, so why draft him? LMAO loving clausen not getting picked…

At least in theory a hog NT frees up Okoye/3 technique to penetrate and cause havoc. Okoye’s improved against the run’ but he’s not great against the run….good against the run is just the default quote for a d-lineman who don’t have a lot of sacks. See Anthony Weaver.

Not really about Williams specifically, but that’s the kind of player people hope he will be. Teams want NT’s who command double teams and control the middle.

disagree

i think he’s the BEST corner in the draft. although ur point is duly noted, the smithiak regime knows alot more about how they want tihs team to play football and what players fit their system. that’s why it ticks me off when people get ticked at the Texans not picking “highly ranked players.” that’s just dumb, Jackson is a long, lanky, well-coached corner who isn’t afraid to play the run game: fits our system. Wilson is scared to tackle. Dwyer is not a Texan type RB. Tate and Hardesty fit, and one of them will be Texans. Man, i luv the Kareem pick….STEEAAAL of the draft, no joke.

I think Jackson isn’t a bad pick. he fits right in with what Bush is doing with the defense making it more physical. people who go after tackles. Kyle Wilson is a great coverage guy and would of been great but it didnt happen. now lets hope for a good DT in the Second and RB in the third.

by dm3890 on Apr 22, 2010 9:45 PM CDT reply actions

Espn says

What he brings: We believe Jackson may be the best pure cover corner in this year’s draft. Jackson has tremendous feet, balance, anticipation and route-recognition skills when out on an island. He has an advantage in that he should be able to make a smooth transition to the NFL level coming out of a Nick Saban-coached defense.

How he fits: The loss of Dunta Robinson to Atlanta is a big blow and the Texans desperately needed a shutdown corner, so this pick is no surprise. Glover Quinn stepped up solidly as a rookie last season and Jacques Reeves will continue to play, but Jackson could very well provide the Texans with ability to take away half the field.

With that said I like the pick

If at first you don't succeed, draft, draft again

Draft overview:

Best Draft thus far: Seattle- They drafted a good heir to Walter Jones and they put a great play maker in Earl Thomas in that defense.

Worst Draft thus far: Denver Broncos. Thomas is a good WR, but Dez does not have that much baggage as people say he does. And the Tebow pick was hysterical. One of the worst I’ve seen this decade.

by nolander on Apr 23, 2010 1:19 AM CDT up reply actions

ya,

but they have tons of picks to move up and down, and quite possibly they were positioning themselves to get him in the 1st place. I think they must’ve gotten scared that they were behind NE. McDaniels comes from that lineage so maybe he had a sixth sense that bellicheck was drafting him. I LOVE when teams take a shot on a guy that they love. People can hate on tebow all they want, but Denver’s got some balls to say, “F**K Brandon Marshall, we’re gonna get Demar. Thomas cuz i’m building my team. And Brady Quinn and Kyle Orton need to fight for their spots against Tebow.” i love it. He went 8-8 last year w/ a defense ranked dead last a year before, and after trading their franchise qb for some scrub Chicago was happy to get rid of. Now, he drafts Tebow to spit in Bellicheck’s face and have everyone in the nation talk about him drafting Tebow?? LMAO! AWWWEESOOMMEEE. i love it.

by wiseonekms on Apr 23, 2010 1:23 AM CDT up reply actions

mcadaniels

is NOT an idiot. He’s young, cocky, and brilliant: in the mold of Bellicheck. They’re winning that division next year, i promise you they are.

by wiseonekms on Apr 23, 2010 1:24 AM CDT up reply actions

I think he'll get fired before he wins a division.

That team looks a lot worse.

Thomas was a horrible pick…Tebow may be a good pick in 2-3 years if he has time to learn.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Apr 23, 2010 1:29 AM CDT up reply actions

i think

he has a longer leash than we think. He’s a prodigy. People are forgetting that he is the manufacturer of the NFL’s most prolific offense in history. He needs time to build HIS team, w/ HIS QB, and HIS offensive talent. I don’t understand why people are hating on this man when in ONE year, he scraps the “franchise QB” and goes from the worst defense: dead last 2 yrs ago, and turns them around to an 8-8 record? They finished 1 game behind us. The only difference b/w this team and last year’s is Thomas over Marshall. Marshall was out regardless. McDaniels has 4-5 years, he will compete and win this division next year. The man is brilliant and bold. Many people thought Rex Ryan was an idiot to take Sanchez (not me, i wish we got him to be honest). Sometimes, bad franchises need to be willing to make bold moves to ellicit change. If I was a Denver fan, I am STOKED to see this product next year…there’s value in that.

by wiseonekms on Apr 23, 2010 1:35 AM CDT up reply actions

The defense was good

because of coordinator Mike Nolan who is now in Miami. Everyone took them lightly, they surprised…got some lucky bounces…..and overperformed, imo.

He may have a longer leash, but I think that team goes 5-11. Playing the AFC South will not be kind to Denver’s record. Right now, I would put them last in the AFC West. I just don’t see any plan whatsoever….except chase all the talent out of Denver and reach for some mega-projects – the QB who needs to learn how to throw and the WR who needs to learn how to do a lot (According to draft analysis).

You wish we got Sanchez when we had Schaub? LOLWUT? Seriously?

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Apr 23, 2010 1:46 AM CDT up reply actions

well,

the sanchez pick was in the assumption that schaub wasn’t a completely healthy qb going into last season. last year was his 1st full 16 game season. I think asking for a qb last year was fair considering what little we knew about schaub’s durability (and mobility). Obviously, now, we’re set for some time w/ Schaub. “super projects.” Demar. Thomas was expected to go in the 1st round, Denver needs a WR. They clearly weren’t going to pick Dez, or else, they would’ve just signed a diva like Brandon Marshall who was well proven beforehand. This team is changing their identity, and I think (looking at this in a completely Denver fan and owner perspective), McDaniels should be given 4-5 years to do so. Sure, we can sit here and say, “on paper, this team doesn’t look good RIGHT NOW.” but we’re forgetting they have Eddie Royal, would McDaniels trade Marshall and draft a speed demon like Thomas if he wasn’t confident that Royal could handle the load as a primary receiver? No, he’s far smarter than that, as much as we might want to disagree, he is. Is Tebow a project? OF COURSE. that’s why he has 2 veteran qb’s ahead of him: Orton has proven he’s a capable starter, and Brady is a solid backup option w/ limited upside as well. Tebow was drafted to be the QB of the future. is it wrong to draft a project? why? vy was drafted #3, freeman was drafted #16 last year, and next year’s crop includes Locker and Keenum who are both long term projects respectively. Tebow is a Heisman winner, decorated collegiate athlete, athletically gifted, knows how to lead, win, and is willing and passionate to be coached…what’s so wrong w/ picking him in the 1st when there’s NO rush to play him immediately b/c u have 2 capable qb’s ahead of him? Ya, he’s a project and they planned the pick PERFECTLY via moves in the offseason. same w/ Thomas…he’s not going to be expected to be the #1 next year, cuz Royal and Stokley are already there. If I’m a Denver fan, I’m patiently waiting this one out FILLED w/ excitement.

by wiseonekms on Apr 23, 2010 1:56 AM CDT up reply actions

It's not wrong to draft projects

It’s just…well, will he see out these projects? And as far as capable goes…Brady Quinn isn’t capable. He’s not much better than JaMarcus. You also say there’s no rush….but we’ve seen the script before: 1st round QB + Struggling team = Cries for the rookie. I dunno, I don’t see patience and NFL going hand in hand…but, it’ll be interesting to see what happens….

I have a bunch of Bronco fans….their reactions vary from wanting Shanny back, to confusion of the severe kind, to waiting and seeing what’ll happen.

I dunno, it’ll be interesting….but I’ll take the “W” we’ll be given.

"Lord, beer me strength."

lol "W"

man, i understand ur reservation, but I think the Broncos were well aware what they were getting and the investment they were making when they signed on w/ McDaniels. He got rid of Cutler for a REASON, Marshall too. He’s coming in to clear house of all troublemakers, divas, and guys who he feels do not fit his system. People are mistaken if they feel this team is devoid of talent, they aren’t. Quinn is an NFL qb w/ experience. Maybe I overrated him by saying he’s “capable,” but surely, you can fill the Tebow void w/ Orton and Quinn for at least 2 years as w/ Rodgers and Kolb. Noone in Denver is expecting Tebow to be game ready by this year, probably not even next year, but that’s fine considering they have options at the QB position. Is it a risk? OF COURSE. but is there rationale, reasoning, and a plan set in place? imo, yes.

The way McDaniels is picking and the way Denver is letting him go at it (and considering he was a huge improvement last year), tells me, they’re loving the publicity, notariety, and bold splashes McDaniels is willing to make to establish the identity of HIS club w/ HIS roster. Of course Denver fans rxns are mixed from confused, cluless, angry, to ecstatic, the texans were 9-7 last year, lost their franchise corner, drafted one in the 1st round, and we have the EXACT same response. People gonna talk and hate, but I just LOVE when teams make these giant statements in the draft, and I’m liking McDaniels. He’s got the makings of a mastermind coach, I think people are letting "rankings, and ‘expert opinions’ " blur them from his resume, lineage, and boldness. If given the chance, I’m thinking he knows EXACTLY what it takes to bring Denver to prominence.

by wiseonekms on Apr 23, 2010 2:46 AM CDT up reply actions

I think he could be successful in a "Vince Young" sort of way.

Even if there are cries for the rookie… He’s got a defense that aught to still be decent at the very least, an excellent offensive line, and Knowshon Moreno.

He won’t have to do a whole lot. I think it’s a shit pick, but in all honesty I’d probably rather have Tebow than Clausen. He’s going to work his ass off every single day, that’s for sure.

by Nashmeister on Apr 23, 2010 8:32 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree on that

I would take Tebow over any other QB in this draft except Bradford…

Does it mean I love Tebow? Or think that this class of QBs are weak? That’s another discussion all its own.

more than a DT actually.

Not true.

I don’t know why everyone is completely writing off slaton. He had injury problems last year(why he coughed up fumbles), and our interior o-line was the worst in the league last year. I love Okoye, but he has had 3 years and he has not had a good one(rookie year was fairly good, but not great), and slaton had an amazing one in his rookie year. When healthy, Slaton is a damn good running back(assuming we dont start kasey studdard, chris myers, or chris white next year). I know Brian Price’s stock has fallen, but if there is no clear pick there, then i would not mind Price. He obviously has the talent and can be a pretty good pass rusher up the middle, he just needs to get his weight issues under control.

People arent writing off Slaton

We just have no idea what he will be after the injury. A neck/nerve injury as bad as his was is rare and we have no basis to set our expectations by. We dont know when he will even be fully healthy.

Okoye is still only 22 and since he got here we have switched D’s on him. He is a brilliant guy but he is still developing as a player. Give the guy one more year since he is NOW the age of most of the draftees.

agreed

i don’t know why everyone is bailing out on Okoye? He’s very young, and Kubiak was well aware that when drafting him he would be a late developer. He’s super young, and ultra brilliant. The guy works his ass off, he has the makings to be great, and should be given the chance to do so.

We don’t have anyone worth talking about playing next to him unfortanetly.

by nolander on Apr 23, 2010 12:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Drafting a pass-rushing DT doesn't spell the end for Okoye.

Let’s assume that Shaun Cody is mediocre against the run and below-average at rushing the passer. If they were to find a DT who was also mediocre against the run (or who could at least develop into that), and excellent at rushing the QB up the middle… Well, you could plug him in next to Okoye to theoretically improve the defense.

Doesn’t have to be a NT (and as we’ve seen, in the Texans/Kollar’s scheme, it’s probably not going to be).

by Nashmeister on Apr 23, 2010 8:27 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not writing off Slaton

But we need another pack to pair with him. Personally I think that guy might be Foster, but look at what the Ravens have done with 3 backs. Smithiak is obviously ok with their line right now wiht Briesel coming back and the signing of smith. Hopefully we get a DT in the 3rd and go for O-line and safety depth in the rest of the draft.

Ignore my comment.

I want Ben Tate. Slaton can start out the season and if he is not good, we will put in Tate and move Slaton to 3rd down(he can be one of the best, if not the best 3rd down back in the league).

Every can agree...

…that CB was a big need. Our staff had their choice of Jackson, Wilson or McCourty, and they chose Jackson. I have absolutely no problem with us taking the player we wanted most at a position were we had need. Reach? Well, that depends on your definition. The Texans wanted Jackson, and there’s no way in hell he’d be available at #51. It was a good pick.

I'm just saying.

We could have gotten an extra draft pick if we traded down a little bit. Jackson was high on our board and not higher than mccourty or wilson on other boards. hes not a reach at 20, but we could have traded down a pick or two(or three) and get an extra 4th, 5th round pick.

yes we could have

but we dont know when Jackson would have gone and if anyone wanted to trade with us. Smithiak has a history of trading down so I believe they either entertained offers or knew they had to take Jackson there.

They are kind of similar.

But Okoye as of right now, is only a run stopper. He is good at it too. He did not rack up TFL’s but he consistently pushed his man back or got penetration. Now Houston is similar, but i think he has a quicker first step, and has a relentless pass rush.

a relentless pass rush in college

its hard for a guy Houston’s size to continually get pressure up the middle in the NFL. I think Houston will play almost exactly like Okoye. Amobi had a great pass rush in college too remember?

PFW's Nawrocki on KJax...

20 (20) Houston: CB Kareem Jackson, Alabama
The Texans needed a big, physical cornerback to replace the departed Dunta Robinson, and Jackson fits the bill. He will enter training camp with the expectation to start and should not have any problems after playing every coverage for Nick Saban at Alabama. He is quick to support the run, plays smart and very seldom gets beat, with deceptive functional playing speed given his smooth stride.

National Fooball Post on our pick...

The Texans needed to find a cornerback to replace Dunta Robinson and Jackson fills the void. However, I don’t know how you can go with Jackson over a guy like Kyle Wilson at this stage. He is a technically sound player who can tackle and find the football down the field. But isn’t the big time man-to-man corner that Wilson is.

Alabama

produces pro-ready players. I understand the rationale behind the pick. Texans are looking to find STARTERS in the 1st, not developmental projects, not “upside” guys, but guys who have been coached and styled to play NFL level football. Cushing, Duane, and Kareem are testaments to this strategy. Jacoby and Slaton were 3rd rounders: guys w/ sick speed and measurables that can excite a fanbase. I LOOOOVE how the Texans draft, I’m on board 100%.
