Open Thread: Countdown To Day Two Of The 2010 NFL Draft

Everyone who had Kareem Jackson being the pick at No. 20 raise your hand. Especially with Kyle Wilson, Devin McCourty, and Dan Williams still available?

If you're raising your hand, I'm guessing you're related to Kareem and/or an employee of the Texans front office.

Regardless, the die is cast. Personally, I'm excited about K-Jack being a Texan. No, I haven't been drinking. Much. I'm just growing increasingly enamored with the pick.

How about you? And who do you want in the second and third rounds tonight? Let it fly in the Comments below, as this is your official countdown thread for Day Two of the 2010 NFL Draft.

all I can say

is damn you Kareem Jackson for making me drink that Colt 45 last night. He is from Georgia but he doesnt have dreads so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Kareem can do it all

WIlson and McCourty has great strengths but theres somethin in there game that critics has pointed out

they say nothing about KJ, thats pretty remarkable.. I think this guy will have a Cushing effect on the CB’s and with hard nosed tuff Quin this will be a strong group now

by HB23 on Apr 23, 2010 7:53 AM CDT up reply actions

He's from Macon, GA

About 15 miles from where I was born and raised. So I like him already.

every panicking need to put a cold wet towel on their forehead and relax

Kareem was the best CB with ZERO holes, no critic can say anything negative about the guy

now day 2 we get Toby, Dwyer or Tate then mayb Houston in the 3rd or a FS 3rd and we’re cookin with grease

by HB23 on Apr 23, 2010 7:50 AM CDT reply actions

Uh

In your dreams, maybe. Both Golden Tate AND Ben Tate are still on the draft board.

by Mike Kerns on Apr 23, 2010 8:56 AM CDT up reply actions

I'd be OK, not excited with it. I don't think he's the best S option out there

but I also think he gets a worse rap than he deserves. Still, it’s not a good thing when people openly talk of moving you to WLB. Does that ever work out? (Urlacher excepted)

I wanted different players

But… I welcome Kareem Jackson with open arms. This team needed secondary help and we got it. I wanted to trade back or something but it didn’t happen. It is time to move on to the second round now.

I hope Kareem Jackson has as much success as Cushing had last year… who I also wasn’t in love with.

by wasteph on Apr 23, 2010 8:00 AM CDT reply actions

Exactly

We filled the need that was at the top of my board. So I’m happy.

by Mike Kerns on Apr 23, 2010 8:56 AM CDT up reply actions

I still dont know much about him

Everything the so-called experts have said are good. The so-called experts didn’t even mention his name until yesterday. But, the Texans like him and had him high on their draft board. He should step right in and make this defense better. That is the most important thing. Bust possibility is about as low as you can be from the sounds of it.

What’s next? From the sounds of it, RB. As long as they have a quality OL on their radar in the next 3 rounds, then I am content.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Apr 23, 2010 8:21 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

They were talking about him before

He was just graded as a high second rounder by most. But rumor is that New England was planning on taking him. So that’s why we went ahead and took him at 20.

by Mike Kerns on Apr 23, 2010 8:57 AM CDT up reply actions

Sorry, Kerns, that makes no sense

Drafting a player because someone else was going to draft him in a couple more picks? C’mon. Think about what you just said. I’m pretty certain that Jackson is the guy they wanted and their decision had nothing to do with what New England was planning. First of all, Smithiak has no idea what Belechick is going to do. And, second, even if they did, the goal of the draft isn’t to spoil another team’s draft. Its to pick the best player for your team. I mean, what if New England wanted Kyle Wilson? Does that mean the Texans would have taken him?

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Apr 23, 2010 9:17 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

That is why they didn't trade down

Because Jackson was their guy. So they went ahead and took him at 20 instead of taking a risk in a trade. What’s so hard to understand about that?

by Mike Kerns on Apr 23, 2010 9:19 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

This ^

My thoughts exactly. They jumped on “their guy”, because they saw a chance that he would be gone in the next few picks.

I had no idea that Mike Kerns was just your pen name

And you are actually Smithiak. I will look more closely at the things you say in the future. Although, something doesn’t make sense. Your rationalization of all the events that happened in the last 24 hours were complete secrets. You did a very good job of keeping them secret and waiting until now to reveal them. Thank you for your insights into the thinking and behind the scenes workings of everything Smithiak.

Perhaps you can tell us all about what is coming up today? Let’s see…maybe you can begin with what Belechick is thinking? Then tell us about what trades Smithiak is working on or not working on and why. Please, don’t wait until tomorrow to reveal all the secret behind the scenes ongoings.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

Someone is grumpy this morning

I’m only repeating what NFL analysts have said. However I apparently came off as being “in the know” I have no idea. But your opinion of me is duly noted.

by Mike Kerns on Apr 23, 2010 9:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I initially disagreed with your statement

that the Texans picked KJ because the Patriots were rumored to want him.

I think that is a reasonable opinion. Even if all you say is true about trades, non-trades, Patriot’s wants/needs and any other rumors. I don’t think that had any bearing on taking or not taking KJ with the 20th pick. The Texans had the 20th pick and they wanted KJ instead of any other player still on their board.

But you are right, I am grumpy this morning and I am amazed that you were able to pick up on that.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

I would have

Preferred Williams, but Williams was always a pipe dream because of the staff. Kareem I wish they would’ve traded down for- I like him, I just don’t think he was a great value. That said, I expect him to be a good corner for us.

he coulda very well turned out to be another Texans 1st round bust that we havent had much luck with

I think you're onto something.

Not that I think Williams will be a bust – I have no idea; was secretly wishing for opportunity to have a Williams Wall of our own – but rather that the front office wants to get a few drafts in before picking another DL in the first round.

by socctty on Apr 23, 2010 10:18 AM CDT up reply actions

yea jus considering we used all those high picks on Dlineman over

RB

Anyone with me hoping that this doesn’t get addressed until the third round?

I’d go CB, FS, or OL in the second. Twas a time I’d have listed DT in there too, but I now realize that will not happen.

Price or Houston could happen.

But yeah, I’m for waiting till the 3rd unless everyone is off the board.

My board at the start of today looks like this:
Terrence Cody (lol)
Taylor Mays
Daryl Washington
Brian Price
(GAP)
Morgan Burnett
Dexter McCluster
Nate Allen
Charles Brown
(GAP)
Ben Tate
Golden Tate
Rodger Saffold
Jon Asamoah
JD Walton
Amari Speivey
Brandon Ghee

If we get someone from the first two tiers I’ll be happy.

I'm down for Price

If he’s there I would think we HAVE to take him. Early ESPN mocks had us taking him at 20 in the 1st. I think he apparently hurt his stock in some workouts but if he’s there (which is highly unlikely) I would love that pick.

Burnett Over Allen?

Not disagreeing with you, Rivers…just curious as to why you think Burnett would be a better fit than Allen.

Reasoning:

Burnett: 21, 14 interceptions despite “poor instincts”.
Allen: 23, played with several other projected first round picks, 9 interceptions.

Allen is safer, Burnett has more upside. Texans lean towards youth, as do I.

I really don’t understand where everyone is coming from with this “We should have traded with Denver” philosophy.

Why would Denver even try to trade with us instead of 2 picks later with the Patriots (and at that, with a team KNOWN for taking all R1 trade offers seriously)?

if I remember correctly

McD is no offensive guru, as is the misconception. He honed his craft longer on the defensive side of the ball. He later inherited a pretty cushy OC position from Weis, over in Foxborough, and assumed the playcalling duties in an offense he truly didn’t build.

As of now, McD better be proficient at running the wishbone.

by Kiratomi on Apr 23, 2010 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Easier said than done...

…although saying “easier said than done” is easier said than, um, thinking critically.

I keep banging this drum, but I don’t think anyone is marching to my beat. But I will keep banging: if you trade down, with the intention of taking a specific player at that spot, the compensation you receive in the trade down must be enough to allay your fears of losing the player you were targeting.

That is, if you miss out on your guy (KJ), the compensation you receive has to make up for the perceived difference between your guy and the guy you end up getting.

For all the “whoa, they got housed!” comments on what Baltimore got from Denver in the trade up for Tebow, Baltimore’s highest pick in that deal was the 43rd overall pick. Does anyone really think KJ, Wilson, or Williams would have been there? We know the answer on the first two: no. I don’t think KJ would have been there either, but I can’t really point out anything to convince you of that if you are truly convinced the front office made a horrible deal.

Is whoever we would have got at 43rd, plus a 3rd and 4th round pick, better than a supposedly NFL-ready cornerback (I am skeptical about that claim, TBH – but it’s the consensus view on him), the most physical cornerback in the draft, that comes with the resume Jackson does?

I don’t think so.

Walter Football's 2nd round Mock updated today
51. Houston Texans – Ben Tate, RB, Auburn

The Texans are usually up front regarding what they are looking for. Virtually everyone – from the owner down to the head coach – has stated that addressing the running back position is a huge priority for them this offseason.

Like Ryan Mathews, Ben Tate is a great fit for Houston’s offense.

by Mike Kerns on Apr 23, 2010 9:08 AM CDT reply actions

And at 81:
Chad Jones, S, LSU

Houston’s primary goal is to beat the Colts. They came close twice this year, but ultimately failed because of missed field goals and sloppy turnovers. However, their inability to stop Peyton Manning didn’t help matters. In those two contests, Manning was a combined 61-of-85, 562 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions.

Eugene Wilson was placed on injured reserve in the middle of the season. Wilson has now missed 29 games in the last four years. The Texans can no longer count on him.

by Mike Kerns on Apr 23, 2010 9:09 AM CDT up reply actions

Walterfootball:

Peyton Manning is a big problem, so to solve this, the Texans will pick a safety that delivers big hits and can’t cover.

Did you here about the LSU and A&M guys that were having an argument about which school was better?

Yes. True story.

The A&M guys said, let’s settle this. We’ll challenge you guys. We’ll put up our bull dog in a fight against your best dog and the winner is indisputably the best school. The LSU guys agreed. So they set a date to meet to and settle their dispute.

On the day of the challenge, the A&M guys showed up with a 90 LB bull dog. It was ferocious looking! The LSU guys didn’t show. But, the A&M guys didn’t give up and waited, and waited, and waited. Finally, six hours later the LSU guys showed up with their dog, a six-foot long wiener dog.

They didn’t waste any more time and they released their dogs to do battle and the LSU wiener dog ate the A&M bull dog in one bite! The A&M guys conceded the contest, but they had to know what took the LSU guys so long to get there.

The LSU guys said they were “sorry for being late, but do you know how hard it is to get a wiener dog costume on an alligator!?!?”

Not horrible.

Horrible as a first-rounder… But in the second? I don’t think taking the most gifted athlete in the draft who also happened to be a four-year starter for one of the best defenses in college football would be so bad.

There’s upside there. His coverage could be improved. As you mentioned, he could play some WLB. He’s undoubtedly better in every way than Barber and Busing as a fit to slide into FS when Wilson inevitably gets injured.

They took a versatile physical freak/project pick in the second-round last year with Barwin. I wouldn’t be shocked if they did it again.

by HB23 on Apr 23, 2010 9:22 AM CDT up reply actions

I like KJ, but those arguing that he'll have "the Cushing effect" are misguided.

It’s asking a lot for a rookie corner to have that kind of impact. And if “the Cushing effect” is an effect on an initially disappointed fanbase, he’ll have to show up on the field from day one to have that effect. That rarely happens with rookie corners.

Drafting a corner is a play for the long term. Just as you wouldn’t expect a rookie QB to make the Pro Bowl, don’t expect the same out of a rookie corner.

Here’s an article from last year from a Dolphins fan site, commenting on expectations of their cornerback draft picks last year: http://www.thephinsider.com/2009/5/6/866376/expectations-for-our-rookie

by socctty on Apr 23, 2010 9:29 AM CDT reply actions   1 recs

I don't think any sane person is outright EXPECTING a Cushing effect

but the fact that Smithiak has drafted 2 Defensive ROYs with 3 Pro Bowls selections between them, along with a 2 time pro bowl DE..and brought in a street free agent who made a huge impact on the defense from the start…suffice it say we can maybe expect good things from the kid.

Round 2.

First round didn’t go our(BRB) way but it fills a gaping hole that we’ve had ever since Dunta’s injury so nobody should be bummed out about it.

If Tim is not drowning himself with Zima, you shouldn’t either.

Anyways, im hoping we take a look at Daryl Washington’s way with our 2nd or maybe 3rd pick.

Or maybe draft Mays and convert him to a LB because he plays like one and it will fuel the fire inside Cushing even more.

If we go RB, I’d like to see Ben Tate or Gerhardt. If not, I can see Hardesty falling to us in the 4th-5th rd.

A lot of people disparage is coverage skills, but he wasn’t really asked to do this. His job was to play up and help out the D on runs. Both USC safeties had this role.

I do think he could step in and start Day 1 at FS. He’ll cover like Pollard, yes, but he has the speed to make up for mistakes. He would be a freak at SS, though.

I find it hard to believe that an offensive-minded coach would have final say over defensive prospects.

I guess your head can get pretty big when you have one of only 32 available jobs though.

But as an offensive coach, is Kubiak getting excited whenever his O-line runs up against Haloti Ngata? Is he laughing at the stupidity of other NFL defensive line coaches for their silly preference for 330 lbs nose tackles? Like this:

I doubt it.

by socctty on Apr 23, 2010 10:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Ah okay.

Logic goes, surely Kubiak asked about D line philosophy, hiring amounts to an implicit endorsement of said philosophy.

by socctty on Apr 23, 2010 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions

well Kubes is a true offensive-minded coach

yet he’s used an overwhelming majority of his picks (mostly great picks at that)over 5 years on defense, all the while somehow concocting a top 5 offense..

This leads me to believe in Kubes now as true HEAD coach..as opposed to being an OC who ran into a head coaching job.

by leacheatsbabies on Apr 23, 2010 10:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Offensive coaches usually draft defense. Defensive coaches draft offense.

very true

i mean look at our pedestrian Oline and our inconsistent RB’s and our unsexy QB who’s not a “gunslinger”..yet he fields at top 5 offense yearly. His system just straight up works. I can see why they trust that “system” over anything, sometimes to a detriment.

“Kareem Jackson, his parents, and his sister are in GM Rick Smith’s office right now.”

What’s so interesting about this? Rick Smith isn’t in New York, that’s what! I’ve been defending the Texans’ approach to drafting Jackson instead of trading down, but how are we supposed to trade down if the GM is in another time zone?

Sure, you can do things with phone conferencing and whatnot. But anyone who has ever been on a teleconference can tell you that you aren’t completely dialed in like you would be if you were in the room with somebody.

*Note: I am assuming that they are in his office to see him, not to meet someone else in Smith’s office. That would be weird.

Trading down...

…isn’t easy to do and shouldn’t ever be expected. If you think the Texans made a good pick but should have moved down 4-5 spots and picked up a 4th or 5th rounder, then relax. We got the player our staff wanted at what was arguably our biggest position of need.

In round 2, I want a RB or S. At RB, I like Tate and Gerhart. At S, I like Burnett, Allen and Jones. I wouldn’t be upset if we went DT or OL in round 2, either.

by Loftin on Apr 23, 2010 11:56 AM CDT reply actions

I am a happy man..

Glad that we filled a need. Kind of shocked from which CB we chose, but I believe ESPN had him rated as the #2 corner in the draft. (Then again, that is Mel and Todd)

Personally I was pulling for D.Williams, but the FO must know a little more about everything then all of us do.

Now, I am praying for B.Tate or T.Gerhardt to fall to us. If not, then a FS or DT would be nice.

Its funny here in San Diego, the mood is somber. Not many people are stoked about R.Mathews (especially what they gave up to get him). Just happy we didn’t take him or have the opportunity to take him.

Oh, and welcome back Riott.

Glad to hear that you’re back from hibernation.

All I know about Bruce Campbell is that

a) he has a cool name
b) he had “Raider pick” all over him.

Not sure if he’s actually talented, or just a combine freak. Would appreciate Rivers/bdg/MDC opinion on him. I know MDC is a big fan of shifting Brown to LG and getting a real live LT on the roster.

What is the possibility that we didn't pick Dan Williams

because Smithiak is planning to have their buddies in Washington ship Fat Albert over to Houston.

by kaizer on Apr 23, 2010 1:39 PM CDT reply actions

LanceZ mentioned this

But his logic is that if Washington didn’t want Fat Albert, then the Texans don’t want him either. I think he could be had for a 2nd round pick, but he’s got that giant contract (although I think a huge part of it has already been paid).

Lance also mentioned that a few Texans players wouldn’t be happy, forget if he said they were defensive or even DL players. I can think of a few, specifically DTs…

Offensive linemen may hate him from his Tennessee days, also.

by socctty on Apr 23, 2010 2:45 PM CDT up reply actions

With the bonus being paid

It’s not an unreasonable contract.

Also, he isn’t happy in Washington because I believe they are running a 3-4. He prefers the 4-3.

if he agrees to restructure his contract to be like Ahman Green’s.. Reasonable guarantees and shit-loads if he takes us to SB

Why would he?

He has no reason at all to take a chance at less $$$

And it’s damn sure not his personality to make a move like that.

just can’t put my finger on why Toby Gerhart is different, but I just have a gut feeling he’d be a great pick for the Texans. My gut is almost always right on these things, and I just have a hunch Toby Gerhart would be really popular. I think there’d be a run on his jerseys. I think fans would be taking their kids out to Reliant Stadium just to see Toby Gerhart log the pigskin.

He might even be the guy to finally fill all those empty seats at Reliant Stadium at kickoff. His jersey might be a hit, too. What the heck, this kid might have the whole town in the palm of his hand.

Who wrote this drivel?

Lack of a slow bruiser-type RB isn’t what is keeping people from filling the seats at kickoff.

People might show up to see a white runningback, kind of like when pandas bother enough to fuck to save their species and produce a baby panda.

I don't think it's that bad

compared to last year. Wait until we (probably) take a RB in the 2nd round. It’ll get real negative, real quick.

by Mike Kerns on Apr 23, 2010 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah...

I dunno why. There’s been no secret about the draft order

1st and 2nd rounds: CB, RB
3rd and 4th rounds: DT, FS
5th-7th: Depth….probably a OL or two for certain.

I Suppose

It’d be Hardesty, chiefly because I don’t think you’d need to burn a second-round pick to get him. Again, not saying that I don’t think Tate or Gerhart can be productive backs; just that I don’t think their value is so off the charts compared to others as to warrant burning a second-rounder.

Truth be told, I wouldn’t be angry at all if we didn’t take a RB in the first three rounds. Hell, I’d prefer trading a four or five to BUF for Lynch, warts and all. It’s all about maximizing the value of the pick to me.

by Tim on Apr 23, 2010 4:01 PM CDT up reply actions

That might depend on

How the front office views Slatons injuries. If they don’t think he’ll recover like they hope they may end up taking a RB in the second.

Nick Saban Statement:
“We are very happy for Kareem Jackson as well as his family. I think it is a real credit to Kareem that he was able to elevate himself to a first round pick with the great job he did at the combine, in his workouts and during the interview process leading up to the draft. He played a lot of very good football in his three years with us at Alabama and he will be an outstanding addition to the Houston Texans organization. Like all of our players moving on, we wish him the best, and he will always be a part of the Crimson Tide family and a part of history at the University of Alabama in terms of what was accomplished here.”

honestly,

i highly doubt this is true…

and even if it is, he doesn’t have half of what he did 2 and 3 years ago. so i’m not worried.

plus, hes completely injury prone.

Some people say "If you can't beat them, join them". I say "If you can't beat them, beat them", because they will be expecting you to join them, so you will have the element of surprise.

I love Toby Gerhart

He is a very physical runner, Heisman runner up, would be a steal. Pair him with Slaton and if Foster can keep up his productivity we have a younger version of the New York Giants earth, wind and fire. He also matches up with what the texans like.. smart and hardworking…i think like cushing originally was, he’s underrated. Not the most athletic but he is determined and works hard, he has great mentality.

by Blondie139 on Apr 23, 2010 3:37 PM CDT reply actions

If Taylor Mays is there at 51,

I want him. I don’t care what people say about he cannot cover very well or he is inconsistent. I think Pollard can play Eugene’s spot. Pollard had 5 picks last year and has shown ability to cover. We can put Mays at Pollard’s current posiiton, and then have maybe the most feared safety core in the league considering both are exceptional athletes and both can hit as hard as anyone in the league. Would you guys rather have Eugene Wilson or Taylor Mays? Also, I know Ben Tate is a favorite here, but he is probably a third rounder.

by Rockets 4 Life on Apr 23, 2010 3:44 PM CDT reply actions

Wasn't it 4 picks?

In either case. I don’t see Mays fitting into the team.

Putting Pollard at FS negates what he does best – play up on the line and tackle.

Our secondary would be mega exposed. It’s a bad move all around. Yes, we’d have a hard hitting secondary, but they could just avoid all that and throw it over the top with no safety protection.

Schefter on Sergio Kindle
“Definite medical issues,” Schefter reported. “I’ve spoken to some teams that have him off their board (entirely).” The latest rumors have Kindle possibly needing microfracture knee surgery, which would knock him out for his entire rookie year. At this point, we’d be surprised if he’s drafted in round two.

Wow, tough luck for Kindle…
