Smithiak was wheeling and dealing like Belichick-lite tonight by compiling six picks in the remaining four rounds tomorrow as well as adding Auburn RB Ben Tate and Arizona DT Earl Mitchell.

Discuss today's draft moves here. We're back at it tomorrow at 10am.

trade em for 3rd rounders next year!

no really… that would make us amazing

Some people say "If you can't beat them, join them". I say "If you can't beat them, beat them", because they will be expecting you to join them, so you will have the element of surprise.

I really love seeing Tate in deep steel blue

Man…just a great pick. Drop back, get the guy…..turn that 5th into essentially a 3rd which turns into a 4th and higher 5th.

Shrewd moves.

Rick Smith > Charley Casserly

One reason why: “The Texans have made 12 draft-day trades in team history, including five under general manager Rick Smith.”

from HoustonTexans.com

by socctty on Apr 23, 2010 9:27 PM CDT reply actions

You do know that means Casserly made 7 draft day trades right??

12-5=7

I agree that Rick Smith > Charlie Casserly, but you argued against yourself there.

by TexasHoosier on Apr 23, 2010 9:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Casserly had 4.5 drafts (I give Kubes half credit for the 06 draft cause it was good)

this is Smith’s 4th.

I guess we could make 2 trades in the last 4 rounds or next years draft to even it up but good point.

You are far too generous

That one, alone, should count for negative infinity.

Ben Tate on 610:

“Anyone who tries to tackle me is going to have a hard time. But, If you can’t make them miss, make them pay.” Love that attitude!

KJ...physical

Tate…physical

I like it

Walter Football likes what Houston's done so far
20. Kareem Jackson, CB, Alabama
Kyle Wilson was the consensus pick after Ryan Mathews, but that doesn’t matter because Kareem Jackson is a very good prospect and fills a huge need. (Pick Grade: A)

58. Ben Tate, RB, Auburn
I mocked Ben Tate to the Texans for months (and in my re-draft) because he’s such a natural fit for the offense and fills a huge need. Great pick. (Pick Grade: A)

81. Earl Mitchell, DT, Arizona
The Texans had to find another defensive tackle; getting as much pressure as possible on Peyton Manning is vital. I think Earl Mitchell is a slight reach, but Houston could have just been really high on him. (Pick Grade: C)

Can't find anywhere else to say this so I'll say it here

Jesus Christ can these guys stop talking about Peyton Manning on our picks? We don’t play all 16 games against the Colts. Shocker, I know.

by riversmccown on Apr 24, 2010 3:49 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm surprised they don't talk more about Chris Johnson and MJD

but that would mean that they would go from us saying that we need to stop the pass to we need to stop the run.

What’s that? The Texans have to be able to stop the pass and stop the run? They have to have a complete defense? How is that possible? A real NT would solve the problem you say?

by theaxeeffect4311 on Apr 24, 2010 4:52 AM CDT up reply actions

tight ends

WHY DO WE NEED……………FIVE T. E.s…………., 6 if you count Barwin
Last year we draft two who don’t see the field, then another WTF!!!!

We have more TEs than the whole division

This is harder to cipher than chinese ’rithmatic

by ptrsn on Apr 23, 2010 9:49 PM CDT reply actions

Signed a free-agent today.

Still it’s intellectually dishonest to call Barwin a TE. He’s a DE, and he’s going to be a pretty good one. At least at rushing the passer.

by socctty on Apr 23, 2010 9:55 PM CDT up reply actions

heres the pick per ESPN end of round 3

29(93) Houston Texans (from Minnesota) Tony Moeaki TE Iowa
What he brings: Moeaki is an intriguing prospect; he’s a very savvy and sure-handed receiving target. He needs major refining in his overall run blocking, but he has the toughness and athleticism to provide an immediate impact in the passing game.

Thank fuckin' gourd.

I sighed into my drink when I read “Houston Texans” and “TE” on the same line in ESPN’s draft tracker. Although I was looking forward to the hilarious responses on this blog…

Tons of talent still left

Look at CNNSI.com’s list of best available: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/2010/draft/tracker/best_available/index.html?eref=sihp

Cam Thomas, Matt Tennant, Mitch Petrus, Geno Atkins, some decent linebackers for depth. Rivers is the right man for Day 3 coverage.

by socctty on Apr 23, 2010 10:06 PM CDT reply actions

George Selvie, Clifton Geathers, Greg Hardy...

All guys worth taking a chance on at this point!

by socctty on Apr 23, 2010 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I sometimes wonder

If we had higher picks, would we get pilloried as McDaniels 2.0?

The “reaches” the emphasis on high character guys, team captains, the aversion to talented fuckups….? In my darker moments…

by JimboTexan on Apr 23, 2010 10:07 PM CDT reply actions

Tebow was a 5th rounder.

It will take a lot more fuckups for the Texans to be compared to McDaniels. Besides, I think too much has been made of the Texans “reaching”… Mitchell can be called a reach, I suppose, but it’s a third round pick! I know some good players come out of that round (and Mitchell might be one of them), but it’s not as if he’ll be eating up 10% of our salary cap.

by socctty on Apr 23, 2010 10:10 PM CDT up reply actions

We have done well.

The Texans have gotten the guys they wanted.

A) Starting CB who can be physical
B) Power RB who has good hands and can fit in the ZBS
C) One-gap penetrating DT who can help in passing situations.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Apr 23, 2010 10:17 PM CDT up reply actions

I see the positives

I’m just nonplussed I suppose with our picks on the whole, though I wil say the McDaniels jab was a low blow. We haven’t traded Schaub and Johnson and essentially replaced them with Orton, Tebow, and Thomas.

by JimboTexan on Apr 23, 2010 11:14 PM CDT up reply actions

What a great video

Seems like a well-grounded kid.

Love how Kiper’s saying “Don’t see a lot of wriggle” as Tate’s wriggling into the end-zone.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Apr 23, 2010 10:20 PM CDT up reply actions

And honestly....

ZBS backs don’t wriggle. Cut and go. Powerful enough to run through people, fast enough to beat them to the corner.

awesome draft so far

I woulda liked Ghee instead of the trade, but Smithiak may pull a starter from our extra 5th.

I also coulda done without the trade up, but its hard to second guess since we got our man Tate.

Dunta's weightspeed was too low
