Pre-Day 3 Thread
Hi kids, Tim brought it Thursday, Kernsie came in Friday, and I'm out of the pen to close out the draft. Probably with very few of you since the NFL decided to put this as abysmally early as possible. My plan right now is to either put up a new thread each round or to go 4th/5th and 6th/7th, depending on how fast we are flying. We've got 6 glorious picks today thanks to the trade downs, at least until Smithiak makes more trades, and we are fourth up at the start of things:
Round 4-4 (102)
Round 4-20 (118)
Round 5-13 (144)
Round 6-18 (187)
Round 6-28 (197)
Round 7-20 (227)
Behind the jump, I've put together my initial tiers for the day, which I will copy straight from texanphil's glorious site, for discussion with the 3 of you who will watch the whole day with me. These are spaced in talent groups, and weighted towards the Texans needs. To explain the missing numbers, my mock hasn't picked a running back yet. And yes, there are PLENTY of tight ends available.

Not the biggest need...
but putting Eric Norwood at weak side linebacker could be interesting…that would be a linebacker core that would bring the hurt!
I worry about his skills in coverage
He brings a lot to the table but we might need a linebacker that better complements what we already have.

So Rivers
who do you think we target in the fourth?
by theaxeeffect4311 on Apr 24, 2010 7:49 AM CDT reply actions
I think we pick Petrus if he's there
And follow that up with best available cornerback.

Would that be a depth corner?
or a corner who potentially pushes Quin to FS?
by theaxeeffect4311 on Apr 24, 2010 7:54 AM CDT up reply actions
To me
It’s the corner that pushes Bennett off the roster.

If they go with a FS like Robert Johnson
I would not complain.
I understand your thoughts about Bennett. I tend to think the coaches want to give him another chance to hang on. Just a thought.
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
I've been in Bennett's corner the whole time
I just think he’s been doghoused to the point that you go get a new dog…or gamecock, rather.

I think Johnson is definitely in the discussion
If Johnson is better than the best available corner, I’d go Johnson. However, with Warren, Franks, and AOA still available, this will be a fun fourth round.

Petrus would be a good pick, maybe project player Bruce Campbell
Frankly, I haven’t seen much of Bruce Campbell, but there must be something on tape that the teams see that turns them off. The guy is a 300+ lineman with speed. I would think someone would take a chance on him.
I could see the Texans adding some depth at DT with a guy like Arthur Jones of Syracuse.
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
According to Mayock
His tape is underwhelming.
There’s definitely a reason he’s still on the board.

I think the Texans worked him out
So, they already know what they will be doing. Can’t wait to see.
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
I forgot about that visit
Would you like to see them develop Campbell for a year, then play him at LT and move Brown to LG?
by theaxeeffect4311 on Apr 24, 2010 8:04 AM CDT up reply actions
Based on what we have seen with him falling to round 4
I’m going to say that he is probably merely a workout warrior and his workouts did not impress any team to take him over what they saw on tape and in his personal workouts. He has to be missing something from his game. I would have to vote no on that. But, if someone likes him in the 4th round, that’s probably a good place to take him if it is a place that you need depth and have a couple picks in that round.
I am wishy-washy on this. Could go either way. I will root for him if the Texans take him. If they don’t, it’s on to the next guy they like.
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
Maybe Campbell could be converted to a blocking TE?
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
It's kind of why I am high on Petrus
because he is raw and will most likely sit the bench his first year, which I would prefer. But he has the ability to be something good.
Also, I am not sure that Kubiak is ready to give up on Brown. He needs to do something about Brown because his progress has been slow.

I agree that we should go Petrus first
grab depth at OG who can develop for a season.

Don't worry dirt turkey. I'll be here to console you when we pick up 4 TE's for the rest of our draft.

Is that a song?

Out of all the analysts I saw the last two days, I thought Mike Lombardi was pretty good
I’m not really up on all those guys, so I could be speaking out of turn. First time really watching any of them. That’s the truth.
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
He's alright
I don’t have anything against him. I am starting to be turned off by Marshall Faulk. He knows running backs, but that’s about it, which is surprising because Deion Sanders seems very well rounded. Jamie Dukes can be annoying but then other times, he can be spot on.

Jamie Dukes, ditto on that
He says some stupid things sometimes.

I'm not saying it's the wrong move based on what they have on hand
I’m just saying it’s sad.

Ah yes
Mayock is the best of the draft “experts”. He actually watches film and tries to get better at it. I don’t know who else they have though who would be informative or at least entertaining to replace Mayock.

Just a question.
Haven’t had Internet for a little while now, and it’s kind of hard to do research on an iPhone. Why had Everson Griffin fallen so far?
by MadMartygan on Apr 24, 2010 8:14 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
No particular reason
Underachiever, hadn’t started till last year, inconsistent motor. Among others.

I like how all the guys that fall, well except for guys like Colt McCoy..
say that they will play with a chip on their shoulder next season. Ha! The team would be pretty disappointed if they didn’t play like that!

Did you hear what Mays said about Carroll?
Sorry Mays, but he’s not a FS like Thomas.

John Henderson is apparently available
Unfortunately since he can’t be easily blocked by one person, he’s not a candidate to become a Texans DT.
- Rivers McCown, From Mom's Basement | Twitter
Would they even trade him to us?
But remember Rivers, Henderson does play UT.

I guess if they are desperate to get rid of him
then great. I would give them a fifth (because of his age)

I’ve always loved Big Hen. Those YouTube clips of him, making the 140 pound trainer slap him in the face to get fired up, are fantastic.

Also
I respect the hell out of Myron Rolle, but I don’t want him on my football team unless he’s teaching them ethics. Is that wrong? I don’t think so.

omg..I believe Dale Robertson of the Comicle just referenced..
“At the combine, Tate posted a so-called "speed score" — which adjusts a player’s 40-yard-dash time for his weight — that was superior (114.2) to those of higher picks Ryan Matthews (111.2), Jahvid Best (111.2) and C.J. Spiller (107.5).”
He’s got more weightspeed than Spiller AND Mathews!
