NFL Draft Open Thread, Day 3 (MK. III - 6th Round)
Two picks here: 6-18 (187) and 6-28 (197). This could be an opportunity to get quality depth at positions of need.
Or more tight ends. Y'know, whichever.

“He’s a versatile guy, plays MIKE or WILL linebacker,” Texans linebackers coach Johnny Holland said. “Compact player, very explosive, I thought he did an excellent job of coming downhill, playing physical. That’s the type of play that we like our linebackers to play.”

More Matt Millen apology jokes....
Even without a team, Matt Millen finds some way to screw up on draft day.
This shit writes itself.
"Lord, beer me strength."
And for those wondering why I keep making these.
Earlier today, Matt Millen was on ESPN and said some sort of Polish joke to Jaws on-air (no idea what it was).
He came on and issued a formal apology for his comments that could be construed as harmful to the Polish community.
And now Lions fans are demanding an apology for sending their team to the shitter (I can’t stop with this…I really can’t.)
"Lord, beer me strength."
Maybe Rush Limbaugh can come in and save him.

Three things
1. At least care that our oline was ass last year. Pretend. Make believe. SOMETHING.
2. A real DT, though I’m not sure if one is on the board. Okam has had enough chances, and he’s not an answer.
3. A FS. Wall?
I mean, shit. We drafted, at best, a 5th TE. We drafted an undersized DT for rotation, and we drafted an ILB (OK, not bad, but we still passed on some great talent). I’m just not liking this draft past the 2nd.

Overview
Despite missing the first three games of 2009 with an ankle injury suffered in preseason practice, Smith earned honorable-mention All-Mountain West honors because of his strength and athleticism.
Smith redshirted coming off an all-state high school career in Arizona on both sides of the line, then played sparingly in 2006. He earned the starting left guard spot in 2007, then turned his game up a notch as a junior, receiving second-team all-conference accolades.
Smith’s ability to move defenders at will and get out in front of run plays will gain him fans among NFL offensive line coaches, especially those using zone-blocking schemes. The fact he was among the quickest (5.03-second 40, 1.74 10-yard split) and strongest (26 reps) guards at the combine means scouts will also be on board when coaches want to select him sometime Draft Saturday.
Walter Football grades so far today
102. Darryl Sharpton, ILB, Miami
Doesn’t really fill a need and is not a good value in Round 4. I don’t hate this pick or anything, but other needs probably should have been addressed. (Pick Grade: C)
118. Garrett Graham, TE, Wisconsin
Didn’t the Texans draft two tight ends last year? I know Owen Daniels is coming off a torn ACL, but this doesn’t show too much faith in last year’s picks. (Pick Grade: C)
144. Sherrick McManis, CB, Northwestern
You need as many corners as possible when trying to defeat Peyton Manning. Sherrick McManis is an OK value in the middle of Round 5. (Pick Grade: B)
187. Shelley Smith, G, Colorado State
The Texans were expected to address the interior line on Day 2 or 3 of the 2010 NFL Draft. Shelley Smith fits the scheme and range. (Pick Grade: B)

These reactions are hilarious
It’s a late 6th round pick. If he gives us burst on kicks and punts, and gives JJ more chances at WR I’m happy.
If not… he’s a 6th round pick. Honestly, no one can judge these later rounds until people step on the field
problem is
we need depth, not luxury picks. Injuries always come up. We need to have some quality backups.
Be judgmental about the actions of the past, be hopeful about the actions of the future. -The Homers Creed
I understand the logic
But I maintain that after round… maybe 4… it’s a total crapshoot. You’re drafting bodies for positions, throwing them into training camp, and seeing what sticks.
I honestly believe if he’s a decent return man, gives JJ more chances at WR… AND steadies our hearts on punts… it’s a win.
by DisplacedTexan on Apr 24, 2010 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions
The Texans can allow for a specialist KR
They have enough TEs who can double as LS, FB, Wildcat, and since they didn’t draft a FS, they’ll have to step in there if needed…
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
Shrug
I’ll withhold judgment until I see how the drafted players fit into the overall plan. Maybe they wanted bodies at CB because they’re going to switch a player to safety.
The draft is a great way to plug holes, but it’s not the ONLY way.

Andre Davis
was inconsistent at best. While I think a beefy NT or S would have made me happier, I think for a 6th rounder with his speed and specialization I like the pick. It also says a lot about the Smithiak plans to pull jacoby to full time reciever

kubiac said he had “BIG” plans for jacoby this year….plus we picked a player who is almost certain to touch the ball 4-6 times a game , with a chance to give us great field position, in the 6th round….my favorite pick of the draft for the value
