It's April 3, 2010: Who Do You Want Your Houston Texans To Take At No. 20?
Last week, the majority of BRBers (including yours truly) voiced that Earl Thomas should be selected by your Houston Texans with the twentieth pick. I fear we're all doomed to be disappointed in that regard in a few weeks. Explanation after the jump...
I'm now 99% convinced that Earl Thomas becoming a Texan is a pipe dream. Even last week, he wasn't likely to last until No. 20, and I believe that 4.37 forty he ran on Wednesday is the final nail in the coffin. Thus, it is with great regret that I decided to remove Earl as an option in this week's poll. If you think I'm nuts, let me know in the Comments.
Did the fact that Dan Williams was available at No. 20 in the 2010 SB Nation Mock Draft change your opinion at all? Think Joe Haden, like Earl Thomas, has no chance of being there at No. 20? As always, cast your vote and let us know why you voted the way you did in the Comments below.

I fully admit
I still don’t get all the love for Mathews or especially Spiller.

ive seen spiller play a couple of times out here on the east coast
and yea, hes good… but there are better.

I wouldnt
hes too similar to Slaton’s skillset, so why pay that much money for a 1st round pick who wont play every down?

I don't think Spiller should be a Texan
but Spiller does have talent. He’s a better talent than Mathews. Plus there are not a lot of players that have that homerun ability.

its hard to say hes a better talent
when they are two different types of runners and what system they go to will play a huge role in who ends up better
Be judgmental about the actions of the past, be hopeful about the actions of the future. -The Homers Creed
Fair enough
It does depend on scheme. I think part of my reasoning is that Spiller was a lock for the first round and Mathews is only considered in the first round after a great Combine.

I don't know...
If they’re adamant about taking a back in round 1, I’d be doing cartwheels for Spiller. Even though I still think CB or defense is priority #1.
According to Daniel Jeremiah from Move The Sticks...
We WILL be taking Ryan Mathews if he is there. Said he was 100% sure of it in his latest podcast.
That said, I still stick with my pick of Kyle Wilson. Even though it’s unlikely he gets past Pitt or the BESF’s.

I may look dumb
but Ryan Mathews isn’t right for us….especially at 20.
The defense needs more talent. When our franchise best is mid-pack…it’s obvious it’s still in need of talent.
"Lord, beer me strength."
I think that's obvious
but maybe I’m dumb too.
Our offense was fourth last season (didn’t look that up so don’t quote me on that). Defense was like you said, mid-pack. Sure we could use a RB, or just use O-linemen. I choose linemen. If there is a defensive talent available at value at 20, then it just makes sense.

I mean yeah Kim has that amazing ass, but even a guy who loves to bite cheeks and spank a girl whilst riding her like a pony, (i.e. me) would get tired of her annoying personality… She could be my booty call anytime but no way in hell would i, in the words of another Houstonian, “put a ring on it!”
Yeah, I understand
Truthfully, I’d prefer Kourtney over Kim, but I’d still wouldn’t let her get away with the fact that she wouldn’t be entirely dependent on me for money, not to mention her work schedule has her gone most of the time (the personality thing wouldn’t be an everyday thing anyway), so every time you would hook up, it would seem like a booty call.

you might be right
Also, I still think SD is going to make a move up to get Mathews.
But, yeah, for players that seem to be rising (Bryant, Thomas), there’s a better chance we get a Haden. I’m pretty convinced Williams goes to BUFF, so I am starting to write that chance off.

Make that move with us
we could get Jackson or mccourty at 28, then a DT in the second, then RB with our extra 3, then another CB FS with the other 3

I've been thinking that for a while
And also NE.
A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.
http://www.battleredblog.com
If NE trades with us
it would be for Greshem, not Mathews. Also, not sure why NE would trade up for Mathews when they are only two picks behind us and the only one between is Cincinnati who doesn’t need a RB. To me, Mathews is just the same as Maroney, so not sure they would want another RB like him if they are giving up on Maroney 4 years after drafting him.
Combine:
Mathew: 6’, 218 lbs, 4.45 in forty, 36 vertical, 10’ 1" broad jump, 19 bench
Maroney: 6’, 217 lbs, 4.46 in forty, 36 vertical, 10’ 3" broad jump, 21 bench

And that's what we call a good eye....
From Walter Football.com (on who Ryan Mathews most compares to):
Player Comparison: Laurence Maroney. Maroney can’t play on third down and has been inconsistent in the league despite great production in college.
"Lord, beer me strength."
18% of the people out there are making the wrong choice.
Ryan Mathews is overrated and shouldn’t even be considered a 1st rounder. Maybe not even a 2nd rounder.

Went with DT
I just think that with a real NT, it would open up all sorts of avenues for the rest of the line to spend more time in the backfield. We all know that with no time to get rid of the ball, it doesn’t matter who the QB is, they’re going to make fewer great plays. Go figure that makes our DBs look better.
I feel stupid for saying it again, but I really think we need to go D-line in the first round this year, as long as Dan Williams(or any other DT who’s not a 3-tech, for christs sake) is available.

I'm feelin better tim. Thanks for your time
DT would be great. I just don’t see it happening. That hole at CB is pretty glaring
but would you settle for this
DT in the second. Not sure about who but maybe someone slides a bit
by AllenOU on Apr 3, 2010 1:10 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
I believe that's the flexibility we'd have...
Dan Williams at 20 makes it a no brainer because we could still get a good CB in round 2 (Brandon Ghee, Kareem Jackson, Dominique Franks)….
At DT in round 2…we’d probably miss out on Cam Thomas. Which means we’re hoping for a Linval Joseph in round 4 or Jay Ross in round 5. (Strictly looking for big, beefys) if we went CB in round 1 with Wilson or McCourty.
"Lord, beer me strength."
And someone like Joseph
may rise into the third just because of 3-4 teams needing a NT. Not going to reach for him there in the third.
by theaxeeffect4311 on Apr 3, 2010 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions
I agree about DT in 1st, CB in 2nd
Williams would be an immediate upgrade in a seriously problematic area, whereas a later DT probably wouldn’t. Meanwhile, there are some CBs in round 2 who could compete for a starting job and aren’t that far behind Wilson and McCourty anyway.
1st round: DT, 2nd round: CB. This way we obtain need and value. A mid-round RB could give us depth, but I really don’t want us to get Matthews.
I don't really think Williams would be an immediate upgrade.
Not only because I tend to think we’re incapable of developing a defensive lineman, but also because there’s a big learning curve at DT. I’m not opposed to taking him, because I think it’ll probably pay dividends in 3-4 years. But I’m not sure that Williams in his rookie year will be a big enough upgrade over Cody to make the defense markedly better, whereas somebody like Earl Thomas probably steps in and plays at a high level right away.
Unluckily (or luckily for me since I’ve never been sold on him at all), Thomas doesn’t appear to be an option on the board at 20.
Jacksonville’s warming up to him…Miami is as well……rumor has Dallas wanting to trade up to grab him…..Tennessee fans want more burnt orange….Pittsburgh fans love him…..
"Lord, beer me strength."
Do you think Cody has done enough
To not be available when we pick in the second?

Cody...
I dunno if he’s done enough, but I think that need for NT is there to push him. San Diego could take him at 28 or 40.
"Lord, beer me strength."
I wonder if losing all that weight
caused him to gain back the spots he would have lost after the senior bowl.
I would be ok with it if we took him in the second, assuming we didn’t take a NT in the first.

Kyle Wilson or Dan Williams
Is really the only two we could get at 20. Maybe Joe Haden or Earl Thomas but those guys look to be long gone by then. Here’s a question for you. Hyperthetically, if all four of these guys or gone then who do we go with?
If at first you don't succeed, draft, draft again
I'm Admittedly Biased, So Take This With A Grain Of Salt
I’d rank ’em as:
1. Earl Thomas
2. Joe Haden
3. Dan Williams
4. Kyle Wilson
And I tend to agree with you that Thomas and Haden are almost sure to be gone by the time the Texans go on the clock.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

If those 4 are gone?
Devin McCourty or Maurkice Pouncey.
Although, in order, I’d go
Haden, Williams, Wilson, McCourty, Pouncey, and then Thomas.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Well...
How late in the first is Pouncey slated to be off the board?
Pouncey...
in mocks he’s gone as high as Denver and Pittsburgh and as low as Dallas and Indy.
Seeing as Denver has 0 centers with NFL experience…it makes a lot of sense that Denver may target the best center in the draft.
"Lord, beer me strength."
But rookies don't have NFL experience, either...
do they?
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
If all four are off the board...
…then I would look at Devin McCourty, Taylor Mays or Mike Iupati (if all four of those guys are drafted early, someone has to drop and Iupati seems like a candidate for that simply because OG’s in the top 20 are rare).
No Taylor Mays
He’s not a FS. He’s a SS and we have Mr. Pollard back there.
"Lord, beer me strength."
TexansDC and other Matthews haters
Honest question. I understand all the people who are putting priorities at other positions, but you took it a step farther. Why do you think he’s definitely not a first rounder?
LZ and others seem to be saying he’s the PERFECT back for the Texans zone scheme with his balance, decisiveness, and secondary burst, even if he doesn’t have break away speed. I tend to trust Lance more than anyone so have warmed up to the prospect of drafting him. What do you see that he and a plethera of professional scouts doesn’t?
I trust Lance, as well
But for me, it’s a matter of need. For Mathews, you’d have to assume three things:
1. Slaton is toast – I think he’ll be back.
2. The offensive line is fine – No way.
3. RB is our greatest need.
Now, you can argue best player available (BPA), but is this true? For that, I would argue no.
Lance doesn’t believe Slaton will return to normal, which is why he thinks we’re leaning Mathews. That Mathews seems to be a great ZBS candidate is a feather in his cap. But even if you don’t believe Slaton can return to close to 100%, there’s no way I think our o-line is adequate.
A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.

Doesn’t it seem suspicious that he immediately catapulted to the 1st round from the 3rd round in one year’s worth of production? He played in a weak conference, with a great Offensive Line. If you haven’t noticed, the Texans play in a strong conference, with a below-average line, while also looking for a one-cut back that can get away from defenders because of our scheme.

by typhoon.infamous on Apr 4, 2010 11:50 AM CDT up reply actions
I tend not to like players who fly up the board
because of the Combine. Mathews had a third round grade before the Combine.
Also, the Texans’ offense depends a lot on the ability of RBs who can catch out of the backfield. Sure, Mathews looked great catching the ball in drills, but I have to think there was a reason why he only had 19 receptions through college. So why pay a first round pick for a two down RB when the NFL life of a RB is about 4-6 years?
by theaxeeffect4311 on Apr 3, 2010 3:41 PM CDT up reply actions
This ^^
Actually, was he a 3rd round prospect?
For some reason I seem to remember him having a mid-2nd tag for some reason, though I can’t produce any kind of documentation that says that.
Pre-college season...
3rd-4th because he had 2 seasons of nothing spectacular with injury missed games.
Post-season….2nd-3rd rounder…..
Post combine…..1st rounder…..
"Lord, beer me strength."
Not a Mathews hater
But I want us to get Pouncey. I think a guy that good as our center would solidify our line for years to come, barring injury of course. Unfortunately, LZ thinks he’ll be gone by 20, dammit. Not that I realistically expected the Texans to try for him anyway. If he is gone, or if they decide not to draft him, I hope they go with NT first, or CB if a good NT is gone. Save the running back(s) for later rounds.

Mostly because
Colt McCoy has been hurt and until recently hasn’t shown any signs he is back in shape… Expect to see him start popping up on to people’s radars for mocks very soon if not already… I expect the browns to sniff him, and why the Texans wont pick him up? the answer is because Smithiak believes Mr. Istepoutoftheendzone is a good back up. Would i like to see Colt in Steel blue? yeah but that is just because I watched him in HS because my brother was on the Team at Jim Ned HS in Tuscola Texas. He would be a decent NFL QB if allowed to sit behind a good Vet (i.e. Matt “THANX ATL” Schaub)
alot of it
is probably because he isnt as tall as the others, he doesnt have a strong arm, and he played in a spread. Im sure some west coast offense will draft him and work with him over a couple years, but hes not worth a first rounder to develop.
Be judgmental about the actions of the past, be hopeful about the actions of the future. -The Homers Creed
yep
Although he is super accurate. He should go in the 2nd fo sho.
Rudimentary creatures of flesh and blood, you touch my mind, fumbling in ignorance, incapable of understanding.
his accuracy
is why he will be good for a WCO to develop as the lack of a rifle arm wont be as much of a problem. He does have good leadership abilities and decent legs so I think he can develop over a couple years.
Be judgmental about the actions of the past, be hopeful about the actions of the future. -The Homers Creed
Hey.. Drew Brees aint tall as others either....
I think a lot of teams take height into too much of account when it comes to players. Dat Nyguen wasn’t more than 5’11 and he was a hell of a LB… there have been a lot of good players who are less than optimal height. but i do believe he will be an early 2nd rnder just because the kid is accurate and he does have a little bit of wheels
Brees
is the exception, not the norm as far as desirable measurables go.
Be judgmental about the actions of the past, be hopeful about the actions of the future. -The Homers Creed
Oh I agree with you there...
but I also put out there that I think Colt has a good head for football much like Major Applewhite who went undrafted due to the fact that Phil Sims cried till Chris got the starting job at UT… I could see Colt sitting behind a solid vet, learning and then compensating for his height through his play. I am not saying we should draft him 1st rnd but i think someone will see him that same way.
Let the homerism bleed through...
wow.
Were you really suggesting to take Colt McCoy in the first to be our backup?
Gosh… could we get Earl Thomas AND Colt in the first?????
I love this time of year with you ut homers.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
Oh no beefy
I wouldnt spend a first rnd pick on Colt. We have too many other needs than to pick up colt. I am solid on my NT/CB 1st round pick. with NT higher on the priority. I was saying that Colt might be a damn good quarter back but he needs to be on a team with a solid vet like Matt schaub, or Seyton, or even Tom Brady (I cant even type his name without tasting that mettalic taste you get when you put your tongue to a 9volt battery.) But then again I thought Brady Quinn might be a decent QB if the same was applied to him. Not many QBs can just go out and play, I mean unless they “Just know how to win.” and LDJA12 is all over his nuts.
Yeah, well...
Who was your horse in the great Leaf/Mannung debate? Cuz I had Leaf in a landslide.
I agree on Colt, though… He’ll be fine, methinks. Just not for anyone’s first rounder.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
Homer here
And no, Colt is not a 1st round pick.
If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?
It was kind of a joke...
…offered in the same vein as discussing drafting STILL ANOTHER Tight End onto this team considering our needs… apparently a weak joke… my ever-so-bad.
And let me be clear...
…I would LOVE to have him in the Steel Blue. Great athlete, fine young man, smart, and eager to win. I was just referencing the first round likelihood which seems slim.
thank you
i’ve been shouting this one for months. Colt is the 2nd best QB in this year’s draft….and could eventually become the best. And, yes, i go to UT, i bleed burnt orange, but let’s not get it twisted, if we could end up w/ Earl Thomas in the 1st, Colt in the 2nd, and Shipley in the 4th, noone here would say that was an unsuccessful draft. man, i would jizz in my pants if that happened.
