Who's The Most Valuable Houston Texan?

It's a Friday afternoon, so it's time for a little mindless exercise. Scanning the current roster, who's the most valuable Houston Texan? Note that "most valuable" is different that "most talented." In other words, the query is: Which Houston Texan is the most critical to the team's success?

Vote in the poll below and let us know why you cast your lot the way you did in the Comments.

Re: No Browns

I tried to limit myself to only those players I was reasonably confident would actually be on the 53-man roster come Week One.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

stability at the QB position is most vital to a teams success

henceforth Matt Schaub is most valuable

most ppl voted for the most talented/best Texan Andre Johnson but if Schaub isnt in the lineup we’re doomed

by HB23 on Apr 30, 2010 3:42 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

remember

the turnaround of the franchise began when Schaub came around

by HB23 on Apr 30, 2010 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep

Best player relative to other players at his position in the league is Andre.

Most valuable is Schaub. Hands down.

by OremLK on Apr 30, 2010 5:11 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Hard to argue against

We all know Andre is a beast. He’s the 1st Hall of Fame caliber Texan, but this team is in the shitter without Schaub.

Remember Grossman? Remember Chris Brown? Yeah. We suck when someone else throws the ball.

Hold on
Remember Chris Brown?

That ain’t a fair comparison….not many RB’s throw the ball well….unless you’re talking about another Chris Brown. Doesn’t this team already have enough?

I agree without Schaub we are a way below average team

by DMcKflstf on May 1, 2010 7:36 AM CDT up reply actions

Schaub

I don’t agree with the statement that the QB is the most vital position, but I think our current line up depends on Schaub more than any other player.

by Big T33 on Apr 30, 2010 3:55 PM CDT reply actions

take schaub out the lineup and watch we lose then

everyone knows its a QB driven league idk wat u been hearin

WR isnt the most vital, HB isnt the most vital..

the QB is the head and if u take that away everything crumbles

by HB23 on Apr 30, 2010 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Reason

I would say that the QB position is extremely important, but like all of the other positions, if the rest of the team is strong then they can overcome a weak QB (i.e. Ravens-Trent Dilfer in 2000). However I WOULD say that the QB is the most vital position for the Texans.

by Big T33 on Apr 30, 2010 9:02 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Dilfer?

Really? Such an overused analogy. And a false one. It required the entire TEAM, a fantastic running game and an absolutely otherworldly Defense to overcome the deficiencies at quarterback.

Peyton damn near went undefeated last year with a below average running game and a middle of the road defense. See the difference? Shitty QB with an outstanding cast, great team. Great QB with a mediocre cast, great team.

If you have a great QB you can afford to not have the best at every position to survive. If you have a shitty QB you had best be bringing a filthy defense, a good O-line and a solid running game.

by Peckerwood on May 4, 2010 9:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I voted for Andre

I know Matt is an awesome quarterback, but having the best WR in the league is what makes our offense go. Without a guy who consistently demands double coverage, our passing game becomes much less dangerous.

his INT’s are kinda high though but i think they were down from the previous year..

it should decrease even more this year with even more confidence

by HB23 on Apr 30, 2010 5:07 PM CDT up reply actions

No, not really....

You never know if the next Wes Welker is the guy that replaces AJ when he goes down. You won’t get so lucky when Schaub goes down. It’s all about the pressure my man. A wide receiver has to run his route, beat his man and come down with the ball. A QB has to throw a freagin aired up piece of leather 25 yards down field into man coverage with a 50 ton mack truck screaming "I"M GOING TO EAT YOUR CHILDREN AND RAPE YOUR WIFE FUCKER!!" all the while at least a few million pairs of eyes are watching to see if you will complete the pass. YAY JOHNSON CAUGHT THE BALLL!!!!!!!!! Schaub: “Hey, wait a minute, dude, I pissed down my leg and still got the ball there, can i have some credit please?”

Other than the kicker you won’t find a more high pressure, in the spotlight job in the NFL.

nope the QB is the most important

actually O.D. is more important to Schaub, all TE’s are a QB’s best friend and the O got stagnant for awhile after Daniels got hurt (4 game losing can attest to that)

theyre not equally important

yea Dre is the man Im not takin that from him he has that title

but Im jus sayin that the turn around began when Schaub first arrived and that first preseason game against Arizona I witnessed a QB that was ACTUALLY makin completions all over the field and was movin the chains

it was amazing becuz Carr NEVER did that.. it was always a dumb pass here or a sack there and when Matt came along it was a brand new O mainly cuz of Schaubs poise and pocket presence

You weren't the only one.

I’ve avoided this thread because I think it’s a little silly.

“Oh Matt Schaub is important because without him, who’s gonna throw the ball” followed by “Without Andre, our WR corps would be crap” countered with “but without Schaub, who’s gonna throw the ball to Andre” followed by “But without Chester Pitts and the O-Line, Schaub wouldn’t have the time to throw the ball to Andre so that makes the O-Line the MVP”

It’s hard to choose the Most Valuable Texan. They’re all relative to each other. They all play different positions and their importance is different from one another.

Why read the question?

Clearly, Andre Johnson will be in the hall of fame, but someone still has to be able to get him the ball. He’s the best wide receiver in the league.

What would the Colts be without Peyton Manning?

I, like the rest of you have often bemoaned the quarterback getting both more blame and more credit than he deserves, but we’re not asking Matt Schaub to just minimize mistakes so the running game and defense can win games for us, we’re asking the offense to win games for us, and the defense to not drop the lead.

He went into the forest to concentrate on the sound of one hand slapping. Red cheeked he returned to his teacher claiming he failed to reach nirvana. His teacher explained he should concentrate on the sound of one hand clapping. –anonymous aggie Buddhist.

While I picked AJ

I almost picked Schaub. When he went out against the Jags last year, we were worthless. He came back in and our offense looked unstoppable again…until…well, you know.

by Mike Kerns on Apr 30, 2010 7:11 PM CDT reply actions

Exactly

And once the starting QB goes down is when you need an “MVP” player to take over the game and minimize the loss. Instead, Johnson all but disappeared because our MVP was sitting on the sidelines and Andre had no one to get him the ball. On the flip side, there have been times where Johnson has had to leave the game and the offense generally kept moving up and down the field, rather than stopping dead in its tracks like it did when Schaub went out.

I don’t think QBs are always the most vital players on a team, but when you’re one of the league’s top passing offenses, have zero ground game, and a collection of bums backing up your starter… it’s a pretty safe bet that your starting QB is going to be pretty darn vital.

teh schaub i voted for

by b0wse on Apr 30, 2010 10:10 PM CDT reply actions

While AJ is the best athlete and player on the team

and also would be on the short list of best players in the NFL, we have no proven backup to Schaub. As tragic as losing AJ would be, we have other decent weapons at WR, while we have no QB2 that would be expected to win more than ~1/3 of our games. AJ missed games in 2005 and 2007, and while we were worse because of his absence, we weren’t horrible. If we had a QB situation like Philly had last year with Kolb backing up Donovan, then AJ would be the most valuable player. We do not, though which makes Matt the most important player to keep on the field for all 16 games in 2010.

Andre

Noone on this team has been such an important player for this long in a Texans jersey. Most valuable Texan, which I combine to be a best player/most needed/lifetime achievement.

1. Talent: In order for our passing game to be successful (ex, 4,000 yds+), we need an elite receiver, and Andre is the best physical receiver in the NFL.

2. Value off the field. The fact it took him so long to become recognized as an elite WR on a lousy squad wasn’t so much a knock on his talent, but merely a testament to his character, like his willingness to keep his mouth shut, his dances to himself, his firearm from shooting himself or a gun he owns kill a man that claims shot him (you can probably guess all these guys). He’s a stand-up citizen just by not being a fool!

3. Overall: Let’s face it, Andre is looking at a potential HOF career, if for nothing else, than for being so awesome, he made David Carr look good every once in a while.

Our football teams in Texas are like our people. The Texans are like the honest, hard-working, blue-collar men that earned what they had and built this state into the place it is. The Cowboys are like the politicians and tycoons that just act like buffoons and make everyone hate us. Essentially, Bob McNair=Stephen F. Austin, Jerry Jones=Sam Houston.

Really?

How many games did we win with defense last year? I’m not saying that defense isn’t important, or even important to our game, but we hardly win games with tough d. It has to be an offensive player.

by BrownCrayon on May 3, 2010 1:25 AM CDT up reply actions

Positional value

There is a reason quarterbacks, left tackles, and passrushing defensive ends are the highest drafted ( in that order ) and highest paid ( also in that order ) – the NFL is a quarterback driven league. Protecting your qb and attacking opponents qb are the next most important things to do. If we replace any one player on our team with a mediocre player, far and away the biggest drop off in wins would be if we replaced Matt Schaub with an average qb. It’s not by accident that the majority of teams picking top 10 in the draft need help with the big three needs, and the bottom ten generally have those settled. Great receivers do make qbs look better, but I personally feel that more often good qbs make average to good recievers look like superstars. Matt is the most valuable texan, even above Andre and Mario and Demeco – though a loss of any of them would be a serious blow to the Texans

The strong do what they have to do; the weak accept what they have to accept

Easy!

Andre but Matt Schaub, Owen, and Cushing follow not far behind! Cushing is a beast out there! We gotta make the playoffs this season, no reason at all not to we got the talent for sure!

by Johannes3 on May 3, 2010 2:14 PM CDT reply actions

Most VALUABLE Player is Schaub

Most BEST Player is Andre.

Yes Andre opens up the field for everything in our offense, but he cant do anything if Schaub doesnt get him the ball. Our biggest worry every year is Schaub’s health because we know we are screwed if he gets hurt. If Andre is not healthy than our passing game takes a hit but Schaub would still be throwin darts to Owen, Kevin, Jacoby, Joel, and DA.

Its basically the same reason why LeBron won NBA MVP and not Kobe. If you take LeBron off the Cavs they would maybe make the playoffs but if you take Kobe off the Lakers they would still win a playoff series at least. Kobe might be better than Bron (I dont think so) but LeBron is more VALUABLE.
