Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

that was a fumble, but it should have been called out of bounds

it wasnt a timeout

it was the 2min warning. And as Kubiak explained later, it happened on the far side of the field, he heard the play blown dead and didnt know there was an issue. I’d like to know who in the booth is the guy who checks replays because that guy let the coaches down a couple times in the season.

A new system

They need to figure out a red-light/green-light system for the replay booth guys. Three very large, bright lights that tell Kubes “Don’t challange, the play was good”, “Challange that bitch… Fuck them!”, and “HURRY UP AND RUN A PLAY!!”

Maybe Flare guns after each play? I don’t know… I’m more the “idea guy.”

Full-grown cats.....and use a potato-gun

Kittens might be too small to be easily noticed (much less identify the species) from the sidelines by Kubiak.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

I'm really hoping

sadly that he doesnt make it out of camp. Im just not much of a Moats fan. Slaton/new guy/Foster/Johnson hopefully.

If the other guys stay healthy, yes

But, who knows? Slaton is damaged goods at this point and we can’t be certain how soon he will be on the field and how effective he will be. Foster didn’t get out there until the last two games of the season last year…basically because he wasn’t ready until then due to an injury. Johnson…anyone know about his health situation? He sat out all of 2009 due to shoulder surgery and I don’t know where he’ll be in his rehab or if he will be effective when he is healthy. He was undrafted. and undrafted RBs do not commonly become starters. They are more apt to be situational guys who sometimes get playing time because the starter gets hurt. If that is the case; if someone is hurt, then I would be thankful that Moats is on the team. He is not a slouch. He is a hustler. He plays with abandon; with great effort on every play. If the Texans are in the position to keep him on the team, he is not hurting them. He is helping.

I’m looking down and see that leacheatsbabies said something similar that I commented on earlier. Yes, the guy leaves it on the field. The Texans can do worse.

I dont see Slaton as damaged goods really

I mean he had successful surgery, they said it went well with no complications, and they have said hes on schedule with his recovery. I dont see how we should consider him used up when they have nothing but positive things to say right now.

Okay, I shouldn't jump the gun on that, but here are my thoughts

My thoughts are, if you hurt it once, you might hurt it again. That is what I mean by damaged goods. There will be a period of wait-and-see on if he is back to his 2008 performance level. And, regarding that point I have another thought….

I am not convinced that his weight gain going into last season was beneficial to his performance. I believe he was visibly slower. Yes, some of that can be blamed on the O-line. But, still, Slaton did not have that burst that I saw in 2008. I would be pleased to read your thoughts on that. I am in wait-and-see mode on that, too…maybe more on that than his neck condition.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Apr 8, 2010 11:46 AM CDT up reply actions

I see where you are coming from

but players can get hurt several times and still play at a high level. Look at OD. Hopefully it doesnt mean that getting hurt the first time means you are more likely to get hurt, but honestly all the backs coming out of college, they all seen to have had some injury at some point.

I disagree that Slaton looked slower. When he got the ball in space such as in the screen game, he was still very quick and had explosion. It was always the running between the gaps that seemed to be slow. If he is to be faulted I think it could be a hesitation from him when he didnt see a hole to make his cut in and he had to improvise. You have to admit he was getting hit in the backfield ALOT.

by DaGoaT on Apr 8, 2010 11:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes, he did get hit a lot in the backfield.

and, improvising isn’t a trait you want in your one-cut and run through the gap ZBS RB.

Regarding the screens. He was very effective. That is a play that the Texans didn’t seem to utilize as much in 2008 and I think they employed it more in 2009, possibly in reaction to their ineffective running game. But, regardless as to how the running game is going, I think they should continue to keep the screen in their arsenal.

But, daGoat, I will wait-and-see on Slaton’s return. I also look forward to the potential for competition/supplementation at that position with a high-round draft pick. Hopefully it will be the latter and Slaton and the new guy will complement each other, with a few carries for Foster to boot.

Wouldn’t that be something if they turn this running game around in one season and return to a more balanced offense that develops into one that takes over games and not just keeps them in it?

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Apr 8, 2010 12:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

that you dont want your one cut guy improvising. But if the hole isnt there, thats what hes going to have to do. Hes not a power back. I think Slaton is perfectly suited for the screen game and they should run it more often. It takes full use of his explosiveness.

Even though I am a full on Slaton supporter I also am looking forward to the competition as if anything it will make our depth much better than what is has been in years, which is complete shit.

you need a guy like Moats

to push all the other guys. He’s the guy who goes way too hard in practice and is constantly trying to prove his worth. I think he has little man syndrome.

However, I’m hoping he’s reduced to the practice squad on account of slaton/foster/new guy/johnson being enough competition.

No way Kubes is holding 4 backs on the active though…unless one is a special teams prodigy.

by leacheatsbabies on Apr 8, 2010 9:26 AM CDT reply actions

Is he even eligible for PS?

Moats has already been on the practice squad before….and that’s not a move you can keep making with the same player every year.

Good thoughts

It seems to be a foregone conclusion that Smithiak will draft a RB. I like your take on the 4 RBs, that if they keep 4, one needs to be making his mark on special teams. Very good thought.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Apr 8, 2010 9:52 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Scenario....

We will not get rid of SS, we will not get rid of AF or JJ and it’s up to Moats to make the team. OK, assume Moats out performs any RB we pick up in the draft. What happens when you have 5 RB’s and the one you just drafted is questionable? Or you take a RB in the first round and he’s guaranteed $10-12MM and you got Moats at $1.2MM and it’s a close call as to who played better in camp, what do you do???

That scenario is why I would go to build the O-line in the draft before taking a back high in the early rounds. I can’t believe between Steve Slaton, Arian Foster, Jeramiah Johnson and Ryan Moats that we can’t have a decent RB in one of them (or a combination). I really have to believe the weakness in the running game is based on the line and not the RB.

The one thing that would change all of that for me is if SS injury is a lot worse than they are leading us to believe and he will never be 100% again.

by Bobobigbro on Apr 8, 2010 9:46 AM CDT reply actions

ya

if Moats outperformed someone they drafted I would say they 100% failed in evaluating that player. There is no way they should draft a guy they don’t have complete faith is better than at least half of their current backs.

by DaGoaT on Apr 8, 2010 10:00 AM CDT up reply actions

That's putting a lot of pressure on Smithiak

I agree, but I might qualify that statement that it depends what round they take a RB. The 4th round or later and I would say maybe on that call. the 3rd round or earlier, the new RB should be measured by 2008 Steve Slaton standards. Is that fair?

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Apr 8, 2010 10:14 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I'm almost certain

that Smithiak is looking for atleast the top 2 picks to contribute right away (ala Cushing and towards the end of the year, Barwin). I think that’ll be a big part of their evaluations, “can this guy be effective this year?”. So by that standard, i agree that it would be an utter failure if they draft an RB in the 1st 3 rounds that isn’t better than atleast 2 of our current backs.

Any round after the 3rd, I wouldn’t hold the RB to any standard and would also be elated that we went defense and/or OG with the top 3.

by leacheatsbabies on Apr 8, 2010 10:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Yep.

This is going to be a fun draft to watch for the Texans. So much talk about taking a RB in the top 3 rounds leads to much speculation, anticipation and expectation. That rhymes. I like it….

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Apr 8, 2010 11:23 AM CDT up reply actions

In this draft

You can probably find 3 guys to contribute immediately….

As for Moats…can’t we trade to someone for a 5th or 6th rounder?

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Apr 8, 2010 11:23 AM CDT up reply actions

I think in Moats' case

He does have a ceiling and I don’t see any other team out there being fooled and thinking he is something that we have not seen already. For that reason, I don’t think he would have much value in a trade. I am not up on salaries and draft picks. Maybe I missed it if someone already stated it, but can someone comment on what round a draft pick would receive a commensurate salary as Moats’ contract?

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Apr 8, 2010 11:27 AM CDT up reply actions

I really dont

see a 3rd string career backup with no real stat line as having much trade value. I mean he’s no T. Choice.

Yes, and there are guys out there on the street like Justin Fargas

Who still has a little rubber on the tire and looking for a job. Although, I haven’t kept up on him and he may have already signed on with someone…but you see my point. Moats is good at what he does, which is as you stated, 3rd-string career backup.

Psqaud

I can’t recall offhand what the requirements are, but Moats has no psquad eligibility left. I like his hard work and veteran presence, but no way he sticks at that price.

Here's hoping

we don’t see either of them ever, except on PATs after our many frequent and tenacious punch-ins for touchdowns…
