It's April 9, 2010: Who Do You Want Your Houston Texans To Take At No. 20?

Last week, 23% of you answered that question with the words "Kyle Wilson." That was quite a bit more love than luminaries such as Joe Haden and Dan Williams got. Is that because you think Haden and Williams will be gone? Or because you like the thought of Kyle Wilson as a Houston Texan more than Joe Haden or Dan Williams as Texans? If you voted for Boise State's Finest last week, let us know why in the Comments below.

More after the jump...

Star-divide

This week, we're going to trim the candidate list. The closer we get to the draft, the harder I am finding it to believe that Mike Iupati, Anthony Davis, Dez Bryant, or Terrence Cody are going to become Houston Texans. In Cody's case, at least with the twentieth overall pick, anyway.

With that in mind, vote in the poll and tell us why you voted the way you did in the Comments. Or, if there's someone on the list who you absolutely think should not be a realistic option for your Houston Texans at No. 20, or someone not on the list who should be a realistic option at No. 20, let us know.

Im considering

getting a different victory beer for each possible 1st round pick we might take. I will drink the one of the pick they make. Of course if they screw me and pick someone off the wall who we havent considered I will just have to pound 5 or 6 beers at once.

Im pretty convinced

that William, Haden, and Thomas will be gone. So I would normally go for Wilson but I am really warming to McCourty. Anyone who votes Taylor Mays should be shot in the face.

I also...

Wouldn’t be disappointed with McCourty. The more film I see and the more I read about him and talk to Rutgers fans the more of a fit I believe he is. But I’m sticking with Kyle Wilson. But it’s 1a) Wilson and 1b) McCourty. I’m ecstatic with either.

even though i did not vote taylor mays

i still think he would be a great pick at 20 regardless of what ya’ll think. Now with that said i voted for kyle wilson because damnit we need more corners.

Wouldn't have a problem with Mays

He’s a good football player. That being said I would rather have a ready made coverage guy, and not another box safety. I think Mays can make the transition, just not my ideal type of pick.

Also, there is a difference between a big hitter and good tackler in my opinion. Big hits are awesome, but at the end of the day you are better off with a guy who makes the sure tackle every time than a guy who comes up with a couple of kill shots and several whiffs to go with them. I am honestly not sure if Mays is good tackler or not. I just think guys with a lot of highlight real hits automatically get labeled as great tacklers when that is not always the case. Rant over….piss poor tackling is a pet peeve of mine. Right up there with the “reverse”.

by papabear on Apr 9, 2010 8:57 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think Mays has been labeled a poor tackler

In fact, most reports I have read say that is his best attribute. I understand what you are saying about big hits vs sure tackles, but I don’t think that is the case with Mays. The biggest beef I have heard about him is his straight-line speed vs his ability to man cover; which I think is why people are saying SS as opposed to FS.

Has anyone put a lot of thought into how Mays would fit into the Texans’ zone cover scheme as a FS? Surely, the guy can cover an area and with his speed react to the ball. Maybe he is a possibility with the Texans. Maybe all this hype about his lack of cover skills is just that, hype.

Just throwing that out there.

I like surprises. If the Texans go Taylor Mays in the middle of the 1st round, that would be a surprise and if he turns out to be an animal in the Texans’ secondary, I will be all over that!

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Joe25 on Apr 9, 2010 7:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Not Saying that's the case with Mays

Although, I do seem to remember LZ saying something about his poor tackling. I could definitely be wrong about that though. I honestly don’t claim to know on Mays. More of a general rant than anything. I just know when a guy has a lot of you tube videos making big hits everyone assumes he’s a great tackler, but that’s the problem with highlight videos. They show the big plays, but you can’t get a feel for how consistent a player was. Again, speaking in general terms. Dunta is probably a good example. You have to love the way he was willing to throw his body around, but he missed a bunch of tackles by going for a kill shot too.

The general consensus you hear about Mays is that he’s a box type safety, so my thinking on him comes mostly from that. General consensus is admittedly often wrong . Just because a player wasn’t asked to do something in college doesn’t mean he can’t do it…just that it makes it harder to gauge.

I'm not sure

but I think Edwin Edwards was a Louisiana Governor (at the very least, he was an elected official) and he reportedly said that the only way he’d ever get voted out of office would be to get caught in bed with a dead woman or a live boy.

You all

Are mercifully unfamiliar with Louisiana’s political history….

The quote is:
“The only way I can lose this election is if I’m caught in bed with either a dead girl or a live boy.”

http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Edwin_Edwards

Edwin was convicted and incarcerated after four terms as governor of Louisiana. In Louisiana’s defense, one time he was running against David Duke, noted racist. And I mean that in a literal, former member of the KKK kind of way.

I only know all of this because of a) my useless political science undergrad major and b) my family is from Louisiana, and I spent my childhood there (moved to Houston around Jr. High). Edwin occupied a prominent place in my Cajun pre-school classroom, alongside Ronald Reagan.

Because one day, we’re going to have a dominant D-Line. I refuse to give up hope.

by JimboTexan on Apr 9, 2010 2:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Went with Dan Williams.

We got some pressure on the QB last year but what we need is to finish collapsing the pocket and get to the QB BEFORE he throws. Drafting Dan Williams could make the secondary better but drafting a CB first won’t make the D-line better (unless you have two shut down corners and we don’t). Take the best available CB in the second round and take Dan if he’s there at 20.

by turnip73 on Apr 9, 2010 10:50 AM CDT up reply actions

Dan Williams

From what I’ve seen there are a ton of good cornerbacks, but not that many big defensive tackles, so wouldn’t it make more sense to grab Dan Williams if he is still there and what ever corner is there in the second, then a big runner in the third

by wkittinger on Apr 9, 2010 12:58 PM CDT reply actions

Completely agree...

But I think most people voting are not looking at the whole list, and have just relegated themselves to the fact that Wilson is going to be the BPA for our needs. I’d love to have McCourty, but voting from THAT list, I gotta go Dan Williams.

Now, as for your third rounder… as long as by “big runner” you mean “a big football player, who can run” then I’m all for it. I’m not sold that we need a RB (if that’s what you meant), so I’d certainly prefer we didn’t pigeon-hole ourselves on WHEN to take one.
This FO hasn’t done too much to shake up the Trust Tree, so I plan on taking what they get and hoping for the best.

by beefy on Apr 9, 2010 1:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Short Yardage

What ever the team needs to to fix that is what I mean by big runner either open a big hole for running or running back, there are pros on the texans who will make the best choice cause they know a lot more about it then me. If was was calling the shots i would of put James Casey behind The Coke Machine and roll those dice and see what happens, I’m pretty sure they could get at least a yard or two.

by beefy on Apr 9, 2010 2:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Hell, with that thinking, why not pull Schaub out on short yardage plays?

Send in a 3TE set with an OL lined up in front of the Coke Machine, put Casey in the shotgun & run it straight behind them. We could call that formation either Thor’s Hammer or Raging Bull

I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.

On The Hardesty Bandwagon

His ability to cut-back makes me think he would gain a ton of yards in the Texans offense. Although I have to say that Mathews looks good, too. Tate is just a maybe. Seems like pretty much just a straight-ahead runner. Dwyer looks too slow to make it here. Spiller is hard to judge. Best reminds me of Morency.
