Should the Texans be interested in Kevin Mawae?

Now look, I know just as well as everyone else, that Kevin Mawae has a lot of negatives.  Namely, he is a former BE-SF and has been called a dirty player before.  I think I've also heard that he is just kind of a dick in general.

However, putting those character flaws aside for a second, do you think that the Texans should have some interest in Mawae?  I know he is old (39), but I'm pretty sure he was a probowler last year, and he played all 16 games, so he doesn't appear to be breaking down yet.  So far, according to an ESPN article I was reading, no one has really given him an offer, so we could probably sign him on the cheap.  Isn't the chance to replace Ragdoll with a vaguely competent, not going to get eaten alive by NT worth giving Mawae a look?  Am I crazy?  Opinions please.

I know he is old.

But anything is an upgrade over Chris Myers.

He's not.

He’s 39. He’s living off a reputation.

According to PFF, he’s one of the worst centers in the league.

I don’t know why people keep bringing his name up…he offers nothing to the team.

a few years younger and Mawae would be a nice "fit"

not so sure about that now… but I could perhaps see us sign him to a one year contract for depth/competition… if he agreed to sign on the cheap

ehhh

if its true that teams are blackballing him because he is the NFLPA President, then that mean he is in fact undervalued and so maybe worth signing. No real opinion otherwise.

Yeah, you're crazy

I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.

For the last time, NO!

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

John Henderson

Mawae is more broken down than Faneca was. The man this team needs to be interested in as John Henderson. I know he’s not the Kollar prototype, but the veteran presence he would provide for our front 7 would be invaluable. We have the best 4-3 linebacking corps in the NFL right now; imagine what they could do with even one competent DT in front of them.

I was hoping we’d take Dan Williams at 20 (though I’ve warmed up to Jackson), but I think a defensive line where Mario, Henderson, and Smith start along with underacheiving bum Okoye and the umpteenth TE/former TE on the team Earl Mitchell battling it out for starting duties as a true UT would do the team a world of good.

Other center options?

Sorry, I guess I didn’t realize I was beating a dead horse with this thread, but are there any other centers on the market who we could pick up? I mean how hard is it to find someone better than Myers? I just really want him replaced.

All these boundaries - Africa, Asia, Malaysia, America - are set by men. But you don't have to look at boundaries when you are looking at a man - at the character of a man. The question is: What do you stand for? Are you a follower, or are you a leader? -Hakeem Olajuwon

I think Rivers said it best

The coaches seem to like Myers. He’ll likely start at center.

The best alternative would be to have Antoine Caldwell beat him out (with W. Smith and Brisiel winning at guards), but the coaches seem to prefer Caldwell at OG.

Myers really isn't that bad

There’s probably no quicker C in the league, and nobody can block on screens better than he can. Nobody.

He does get blown up by true NTs, though, which is definitely his downfall.

I will admit in other games he is pretty good. It scares me though with the teams we play this year. You would think we could get him some help against real NTs.
