"Here it is: Brian Cushing tested positive for slightly elevated levels of hCG (a non-steroidal substance produced naturally by the body)."

UPDATE: More from Schefter:
"More hCG: it is in seminal fluid and slightly elevated levels can be discovered in the event that a test occurs soon after ejaculation."

I’m not a big fan of the revote either. Never said I was. As for evidence, how many times have we been through this with people who test positive? They always have "compelling’ evidence. Remember Palmiero? How he was going to blow everyone away with his evidence?

The revote is pointless

However just because he tested positive in September doesn’t mean all benefits from steroids would have just disappeared. If I was a voter, and was looking to make a statement on steroids, and looked at how his play continued to get better throughout the year even without additional steroidal use, I would probably still vote Cushing.

is that we don’t have nearly enough evidence to judge one way or the other

I also want to clarify, I don’t have a problem with people saying they want to wait for all the facts. Its the people running around screaming about how innocent he is that bother me. I’m sure that can be turned around on me, but I’m basing my position on what has happened in almost every single failed drug test by a player ever.

The AP vote is a joke.

You see, the best way to make a decision is based on Schefter tweets and medical information culled from wikipedia.

I’m not inclined to believe Cushing’s view of the story on this, but I am very interested in hearing it and why he believed he thought he’d actually win an appeal. Because you know, unlike the AP, I actually think facts are important, and don’t have the need to prove that I’m not soft on PEDs.

http://blogs.chron.com/texanschick/2010/05/rushed_revote_on_brian_cushing.html

The AP revote is a big fat freaking joke. I put a Tweet out there on this so feel free to beat people with it if you care to.

by StephS on May 11, 2010 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I respect your opinion

What is your reaction to Joe D’s statements? I agree that the ultimate word is the NFL regarding their decision. The AP is respomsible fortheir own reaction. But, unless someone in the know steps forward, such as a source that allegedly provided Cushing with PEDs, then what basis do you have on taking your stance? You are putting two and two together, but you are throwing out other data to come to your conclusion, are you not?

It is easy to speculate in a case like this where different stories are out there. I would rather believe the guy who is closest to the situation. That is Brian Cushing. He says it was not steroids, although he didn’t say he didn’t use steroids. Isn’t it right not to speculate and conclude it was? I really don’t think, pending some smoking gun being revealed, that Brian Cushing is ever going to make a contrary statement.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on May 11, 2010 10:50 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Its reality

You just don’t always get 100 percent stone cold lock evidence. Is the fact that we have been through this with athlete after athlete, year after year affecting my judgment? Yes. Is the fact that Cushing has been hounded by rumors for a long time also playing a factor? Yes. Did he test positive for something that is used as a masking agent? Yes. Do I think its more likely he was wanking before the test, not that he had done steroids? No.

Should I wait for Cushings evidence to come out? Maybe, but as I have said several times, its the same thing every football player says when they test positive.

Rudimentary creatures of flesh and blood, you touch my mind, fumbling in ignorance, incapable of understanding.

by nolander on May 11, 2010 11:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Just want to point out one thing

The supplement industry is completely unregulated. I have seen reports (not tied to an athlete’s story) that when tested they often don’t contain every thing they claim and often have been found to have some bonus ingredients. So it’s at least plausible when an athlete claims an OTC supplement must have caused it. It’s still no excuse. The NFL has a list of “certified” supplements for that very reason. Although the players involved in the “star caps” case, including our LS at the time I believe, claimed that the hot line they were given for info on supps was never manned and their calls weren’t returned and that there was confusion about where to get the info on the certified supps.

Of course the fact that it is plausible that a legal supp can cause a positive means every athlete will use that as an excuse. I’m sure it’s true sometimes, and I’m sure sometimes it’s not. The NFL’s stance is it doesn’t matter if it was intentional or not.

As it relates to Cushing….I hope his defense is that he was whacking it before the test just for comedic reasons. Slightly elevated is too vague and I don’t have anywhere enough knowledge of biochemistry to chime in on what that means. That seams to be a legitimate problem with the test for PED’s to me though….they don’t necessarily find the substance itself but look for naturally occurring hormones/chemicals that are out of whack and in different ratios than they should be. I know that usually they set the positive limit well beyond anything that would be considered normal but athletes are on the fringe of what is normal for humans to begin with.

I get what your saying about every athlete saying the same thing, but at the same time you’re completely ignoring the fact that at least a few of them may have been telling the truth. There really is no way to know for sure, but this issue has become such a witch hunt that even hinting at steroid use is enough to get some people riled up enough to burn them at the stake. Even so called “respected” journalist are talking about the rumored failed combine test for Mattews and Cushing…even though that was discredited pretty quickly after it came out.

With Manny, all they had to do was go bad & look at previous tests to catch him. Cushing never tested positive for anything for the rest of the season

There is no evidence whatsoever to prove that Cush used steroids

It’s not a matter of what you “believe”. There’s no way anyone can prove anything regarding whether or not he used any steroids, unless more facts come out. To call someone a cheat just because you think so is unfair to the person concerned, Cushing in this case.

"no evidence whatsover"

Except for the fact that he TESTED FUCKING POSITIVE FOR STEROIDS. Dude, we’ve all become Cush fans here, I personally am pushing for him and wanting to give him the benefit of the doubt, but your heading is just reckless. The NFL doesn’t toy with these situations lightly — if they suspend a highly touted, marketable young player, they do it for a reason. So you’re right, it’s not what I “believe” — that Cush is a badass — it’s what the facts on the ground are.

Yes thats true

but HcG is supposedly become used more and more as parts of steroid cycles, which more then likely led the NFL to reevaluate their test for it.

by nolander on May 12, 2010 11:42 AM CDT up reply actions

Per Schefter

Cush also passed numerous tests throughout the season. So, yes, he played the vast majority of 2009 free of any banned substances.

Even if he used to get healthy before the season (which is wrong), his clean performance gives us reason to believe he can continue that level of play. His 4 games off should help, too.

by BigTexBD on May 11, 2010 10:18 AM CDT reply actions

Although I should add

If he was juicing in any way pre-season, it would have benefitted him during the season in terms of starting the year healthier and stronger than he naturally would have. So all those games he started when he was “questionable” may have been “doubtful” or “out” without the training benefit of PEDs.

I’m still having trouble understanding how the NFL can list a naturally ocurring hormone as a banned substance. I’m sure it has something to do with the levels present, and in Cushing’s case the level was so low that in 08 it would not have resulted in a suspension. So what the hell changed between 08 and 09 that encouraged the NFL to ban it?

yea

What they are looking for is the ratio’s of different chemicals/hormones being out of whack.
testosterone to epi-testorone for example.Usually the limit for a positive is well outside the normal level to account for athletes being a little different than the average fat ass on the couch….there’s a reason they can do things normal people can’t. That being said I’ve always wondered how they account for someone’s body being naturally out of whack.

Plus i knew Manny was guilty just like Bonds, Clements, etc etc etc… even thought that Jeff Bagwell could have been a user… But not Craig Biggio that guy was so skinny he could slip into the holes in a manhole cover!

so he laid some girl down and got called by the league for the test right after

or he masturbated..or he may have took something to elevate those levels slightly (and restore size to his testicles). In ANY case, it is a naturally occurring hormone in the body and he only tested positive for “slightly elevated” levels of a natural hormone. Anyone can speculate, but the facts are he hasn’t taken any type of steroids that can be confirmed and he tested clean throughout basically the entire 2009 season.

The only two things that even matter to me out of this entire ordeal is
1. He’s suspended for 4 games which is a HUGE hit
2. Whatever he took makes no difference because he played out of his mind as an injured starting rookie while under intense scrutiny from the league all year.

Can’t wait for week 5 when this guy gets a shot at someone.

ESPN (parroting Schefter’s tweets) said that if Cushing was tested by the 2008 standards…he wouldn’t have triggered a positive test.

by TexansDC on May 11, 2010 1:03 PM CDT reply actions

I was just about to post that

This really pisses me off if its true. I know testing is getting stricter but it seems ridiculous to me that they can change the levels of what is or is not a positive test on a substance that is naturally occurring.

What I want to know is if the NFL has a base test for every player because naturally occurring substances like hCG can vary person to person. If Cush’s natural level of hCG is higher than most than his positive for a “very slightly elevated” level could be explained by ejaculation.

by TexasHoosier on May 11, 2010 1:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Because it’s irrational?

If the test could be triggered just from ejaculation, don’t you think there would be many more positive tests triggered throughout the NFL? Is Cushing the only one who get’s laid in the NFL according to texan fans? So the one person who supposedly has a questionable past in regards to steroid abuse is the only person out of hundreds of players in the NFL can trigger a positive test?

Out of literally every player that has been tested, in all of the sports, in the most random situations, Cushing was the only one caught red handed. That should tell you something about this “masturbation” defense.

You can pretend and throw as many illogical scenarios in you’re head all you want. But it’s obvious to anyone other than the blind faithful that you’re justifying it not because you believe otherwise, but because you don’t want to face that unfortunate reality.

Just wanted to point out that Cushing is being doubly punished for this

in terms of awards. If he loses the DROY than he will be punished for the year he failed the test and because of NFL rules will be punished in the year he served the suspension. According to the NFL a player can not win an award or go to the Pro Bowl in the year they serve their suspension. There is no rule that a player can not win an award in the year they fail the test, but the AP are being douche bags and making their own rules (it is their own award but lets not worry about that).

Also, Mark Schlereth compared Cushing’s case to Pepper’s case which is a much better comparison than Merriman. AP voted Peppers DROY after he had tested positive in that same year.
