The Pharmacist is in: Defending Brian Cushing
Ok, so I’m not actually a pharmacist. I am a senior at Oklahoma State University majoring in physiology with emphasis in endocrinology, so hormones are somewhat of a specialty for me. I’m here to talk to you guys about Brian Cushing and to arm you with the knowledge necessary to defend him and your club from the recent slander, and I’m sorry I couldn’t do this sooner.
Cushing was caught using a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin or hCG. Many athletes who use steroids incorporate hCG to prevent some nasty side effects like testicular atrophy (shrinkage) during the steroid cycle and muscle atrophy (loss of strength) after a steroid cycle. When used in this capacity it is taken in high doses. From the reports I’ve seen Cushing was found with only low levels of hCG so I don’t believe he used this hormone for this purpose. Also since he was tested frequently after this incident and was found to be “clean” during that time and due to the fact his production continued to increase after this incident (people who were on steroids and come off them tend to lose their extra muscle mass very quickly) leads me to believe he was never on anabolic steroids to begin with.
Another use for hCG is many athletes believe that hCG can help reduce subcutaneous fat. It has been proven time and again that this doesn’t work but many athletes and trainers still believe that it helps. When used in this capacity the hormone is taken in low doses and usually taken orally instead of an injection. Once again, due to the low level of this found in his urine I believe this is what he was taking it for because linebackers can’t usually be fat and still do their job well.
Since hCG is normally produced by pregnant women, it can have side effects on males that increase feminine appearances like breast tissue growth when taken in high doses. Because of this, hCG is usually used with an anti-estrogen agent which wasn’t found in Cushing’s urine analysis either.
I don’t believe this boosted his performance in any way. The evidence seems to point out that the performance seen on the field last year was all Brian Cushing, thus making him deserving of the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. He’s just a really good player who will continue to get better assuming he doesn’t get hurt.
Texan fans, I hope I’ve armed you with the knowledge to defend Brian Cushing and take anyone down in an argument about him “illegally enhancing his performance”. Did he technically cheat; yes he did because he took a banned substance, but the evidence I’ve presented to you indicates that all his talent is natural.
Writers Note: If you already couldn’t tell by my avatar, I am indeed a Colts fan, but I still feel like Brian Cushing should be defended. Thank you and if anyone has any further questions about this substance or other banned substances, feel free to ask and I’ll answer as soon as I can.

Everything was good except for one line...
Cushing was caught using a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin or hCG
He never actually got caught using it, just had higher levels.
Otherwise I love everything you said!

Thanks for the info. Rec'd.
If he was indeed taking it because he wanted to lower his subcutaneous fat level, he’s still a dumbass because he should have known it was a banned substance.
However, this does make me hate the moral crusaders in the media even more (and yes, that includes BBS).

Thanks for the input..I do, however, take issue with this:
(people who were on steroids and come off them tend to lose their extra muscle mass very quickly)
That’s not necessarily the case if careful attention is paid to diet and training. And dude is a fanatic about both. I’m not saying he did or didn’t…just that I don’t think this particular statement applies in this case.
Thanks Colts fan
Never thought I would say that!
Seriously though, I like the analysis and think the league should revoke the suspension immidiately and apologize. The leagues drug policy is a joke. If you can’t suspend the Williams wall in Minnesota then you should be able to suspend any other player either.
Why Bring up the Brain Cushing thing?
i know im tired of it and i dont need to defend Cushing if people think he used Steroids then they are ignorant.
living the Texas dream
Either that
Or they have a fairly solid case based on the evidence we’ve heard.
I hate to sound wishy washy, but there’s no way I, personally, would say one way or the other.
Very nice post, Sanders_fan.
A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.

I was mostly convinced at first that he was a damn dirty cheater, but there has been enough doubt cast on the allegations that I’m just not going to try to decide either way. There is a lot of evidence either way.
Rudimentary creatures of flesh and blood, you touch my mind, fumbling in ignorance, incapable of understanding.
Not necessarily
As far as I can tell, while the NFL’s program is pretty complete, it is missing some safeguards to protect the “testees.” It doesn’t mean they don’t have them, just that they aren’t listed in the project document. Unless the testing program is federally regulated, the employer can pretty well do as they please.
For instance, is the lab part of a strong QC program that includes verifying point to point chain of custody? Are the levels at which a positive reading is obtained high enough to preclude false positives? This point is important because it appears the reading was borderline.
Nice Post...
thank you, but the dumbasses that talk shit to me about Cushing wouldn’t change their minds on his Roid use even if the NFL took away his suspension, because of proof he didn’t violate anything.
Great Info though….
Colts start 0-1…sorry:)
GO TEXANS!!!!
Our time will come...
keep pulling the wool over your eyes
The simple fact that he is taking the suspension and not fighting it in court ala’ starcaps is evidence he did ‘something’ wrong. Even if your story was true it would still make him a liar as he claims he did nothing at all, and its all a medical mystery. I’m tired of hearing about him. Dude got busted, he’s going to be unavailable for the first 4 games and time will be the judge on if he roided or not.

That's not a fact.
That’s your conjecture. And like people who say he is innocent, you have no way of proving it.
Otherwise I agree with everything you said.

Nice job Sanders fan
Question? I never saw the exact results of the analysis. Do you have those? One more – do you know if the max allowable level of hCG was reduced from 2008 to 2009? Finally if you would have any information on what method was used for the assay, method detection limit and/or std deviation, that would be great.
Thanks again for the interesting perspective.
