Put Your Name On It: The Starters For Your 2010 Houston Texans

Nothing screams "post-draft lull" quite like mindlessly speculating who will be starting for your Houston Texans when the Colts come to town on September 12th. My educated (as in, "Tim reads at a third-grade level!") guess after the jump.

Star-divide

WR: The Holy Spirit Andre Johnson
LT: Duane Brown
LG: Antoine Caldwell
C: Chris Myers
RG: Mike Brisiel
RT: Eric Winston
TE: Owen Daniels
WR: Kevin Walter
QB: Matt Schaub
RB: Arian Foster (that's right...I remain sadly resolute in my skepticism about Steve Slaton returning to form, and I'm guessing Foster gets the opening nod over Ben Tate, though I fully expect Tate to be the bellcow by the end of the season)
FB: Vonta Leach

On to the defense...

LDE: Antonio Smith
DT: Amobi Okoye
NT DT: Shaun Cody
RDE: Reggie Bush Mario Williams
SLB: Brian Cushing
MLB: DeMeco Ryans
WLB: Zac Diles (despite the Good Reverend's prayers to the contrary)
LCB: Glover Quin
RCB: Kareem Jackson
SS: Bernard Pollard
FS: Eugene Wilson

And finally, the special teamers:

K: Neil Rackers (sorry, Kris Brown; thanks for the memories, and I'll eventually forget the nightmares)
P: Matt Turk
KR: Jacoby Jones
PR: Trindon Holliday
LS: Joel Dreessen

Are you in complete agreement? Complete disagreement? Think it needs a few tweaks? Tee off in the Comments below.

Looks good, Tim

Only changes to mine would be that I honestly believe Jacoby Jones will be starting at WR2 and Ben Tate will be in the backfield from day 1.

Totally Possible

Tate at RB in particular wouldn’t shock me at all. As much as I’d like to see Jakespeare become a legitimate WR2, you know I’ll believe it when I see it, especially after the team gave K-Dub that new deal.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Like the token deference

Given to our last starting running back, I expect Tate to start eventually but not right away.

JJ

Is being converted to TE

Thank God!

With this move, all of our roster holes will finally be filled.

Possible flips

RB: basically a coinflip. I’d bet Tate.
WR:: with Tim, think the staff will underwhelm me as far as Jacoby goes.
TE: if Daniels isn’t healthy.
OL: I think W.Smith is starting at LG and Caldwell at RG.
DE: Maybe Barwin comes in and wins the job from A.Smith
DT: Not a lot of competition for Mitchell. He could make it.
OLB: Diles vs. Sharpton, I’d bet Diles.
RCB: With Tim in that I think Jackson will start from Day 1.
FS: Coaches love D.Barber and there’s always a chance Wilson gets hurt…well, basically at any time.

Re: Flips

Wade Smith could certainly get in at one of the guard spots or center, and I have little doubt that Wilson does have to miss time eventually; just don’t think it’ll be Week One.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

by Tim on May 7, 2010 1:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Wade Smith was the only omission I would bring up too. I could see his beating out Myers or Brisiel for one of the interior OL spots. I have G-C-G left to right Caldwell-Smith-Brisiel as the early favorite and Smith-Myers-Caldwell as a close 2nd. They’re basically paying Smith starter’s jack, so that’s what I’d expect. Plus he actually was pretty solid in the run game for KC down the stretch last season.

I might also flip Jacoby and Holiday in the return roles you have listed.

Barber will probably wind up starting at FS...

When Wilson gets hurt during the preseason.

Also, methinks Reeves wins the other CB job with Quin playing nickel.

by Nashmeister on May 7, 2010 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm also in Camp Tate

As much as I would like Wade Smith to start over Myers, I’m guessing it doesn’t happen. At least there’s no Studdard so I should be happy about that.

Holliday probably is the primary returner on both kicks and punts. Jacoby will be out there on kick-offs (allowing my heart to rest on punt returns), but I’m ready to see that world-class speed.

This brings up another question

Who is the worst starter on our team?
In my mind, it’s a dogfight between Shaun Cody and Chris Myers. I think Myers gets the edge, mostly because he plays every down. And sadly, I agree that he will be starting.

by JimboTexan on May 7, 2010 2:00 PM CDT reply actions

yeah I think Smith has to start for 12 million

put him at LG and Brisiel at RG with Caldwell at C.

I too think Foster will start at RB but we’ll ride Tate when he’s hot from game 1. (I for one am hoping Slaton comes back with avengence and takes the starting job but i know its wishful thinking)

I think Sharpton will impress and beat our Diles at WLB. (the fact that you could put ANYONE there next to Meco and Cush helps)

by leacheatsbabies on May 7, 2010 2:03 PM CDT reply actions

Don't remeber hearing a detailed reason but last year Caldwell was drafted as a C/G

but was later tabbed as a G only. I would really like someone to beat out Meyers at C. From left to right I see Caldwell-Smith-Brisiel or Pitts-Smith-Caldwell. Haven’t seen anything written about Pitts lately. Is he healthy?

If Holliday looks good as a KR, what’s wrong with him handling both punts and kickoffs? I like Jacoby’s potential as a big play receiver, and if he (and the rest of us) don’t have to lose sleep over worrying about his fielding punts, his development as a WR may move faster.

Just did a quick Google search, and this popped up.

http://www.foxsportshouston.com/05/06/10/From-rock-of-the-franchise-to-rock-botto/landing.html?blockID=229867&feedID=3714

For those not wanting to read the article, it basically says that he expects to be ready for football activities around late June. He hasn’t really heard from any teams, but he half expects to get a call from Seattle based on where he fits and what the team needs are.

He also said that he has received little interest from the Texans.

On a personal note, I think the Texans are probably waiting to see how Wade and Shelley Smith perform in some OTA’s, as well as seeing what sort of contract offers Pitts gets before making any sort of move.

by Tailgate Andy on May 7, 2010 5:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Thanks Andy

Even before the ironman Pitts went down injured, there was speculation that he would be a cap casualty due to his high $$$ figure. I wish him well. He was a likeable guy and improved so much over the course of his Texans’ career.

so basically

Does this mean that training camp and pre-season is going to be boring as hell because there are no positions up for grabs except MAYBE the WLB and RB? (As no one really gives a shit about the PK until said PK misses to lose a regular season game.)

by grungedave on May 7, 2010 2:04 PM CDT reply actions

There's a lot of battles for roster spots....

especially at CB and TE…..and the Gs and Cs.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on May 7, 2010 2:08 PM CDT up reply actions

oh yeah forgot TE

thats a perpetual competition on the Texans roster

by leacheatsbabies on May 7, 2010 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions

no I think Kubes has made it pretty clear they want open competition everywhere

theres big competition at RB, interior Oline, WLB, CB, FS and Special Teams including KR (Holliday and Jacoby) and K (Shank and Rackers). I think they’ll pick the best 11 on both sides and go.

by leacheatsbabies on May 7, 2010 2:09 PM CDT up reply actions

It's a shame that Patrick Willis doesn't play for the Texans

Because you can pretty much write him into every starting position on both sides of the ball.

Why are there so many references to Patrick Willis on BRB?

I don’t get this joke. Is he just an arrogant ass or what?

Chiefs fan here...

what in the hell happened to Steve Slaton? I’ve never seen a promising rookie drop off the map that fast before. Should I not even draft Slaton in fantasy this year?

by I_Bleed_Red. on May 7, 2010 2:18 PM CDT reply actions

I dunno

He put on weight, he had the neck/nerve injury….the line wasn’t healthy (and sucked).

I wouldn’t draft him. There’s no guarantee that he’ll return healthy. If you got him in the right round, Ben Tate would be a shrewd pick.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on May 7, 2010 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Slaton is pretty much

waiver wire guy. He won’t get drafted but do pay attention if the Texans are using him in the preseason and how he looks.

But yeah watching highlights from 2008 makes me a sad panda.

by b0ng on May 7, 2010 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd be willing to bet money Arian Foster isn't the starter

Aside from that though, I can’t find anything to disagree with.

Holliday returns kicks and JJ punts....

just a feeling, nice post though.

Also, my only dissent from Tim’s starters. And possibly Jakespeare starting ahead of KDub.

Why would anyone want JJ to return punts?

Do you guys like living dangerously?

Holliday was drafted as a returner. If he’s not back for both kicks and punts….it’s a wasted pick, imo.

Hmm, I've seen someone already suggest that in this thread

No.

Let JJ worry about becoming a WR2, and let Holliday impact our ST as a KR and PR

How's you folks' confidence

in Glover Quin as a starting CB??

He definitely brings a physical presence to his edge of the D, but I have serious reservations with seeing him on an island outside in coverage all game, every game. He could barely hang in coverage on the slot last season, and I’m very leery of his foot speed and quickness to stay with serious deep threats on the outside. Frankly, I actually feel better about Kareem Jackson in man-up coverage than I do in Quin going into camp. I wonder if they’ll move GQ inside to the nickel on passing downs or are they really gonna trust him to man the boundary in most situations.

Much remains to be seen, but the rotation/positioning between the two starters (presumably Quin & Jackson) and Reeves/McCain/whomever will be very interesting to observe.

lets see here

Agree with everything except the following, but who really knows.

LG: Wade Smith
RG: Antoine Caldwell
RB: Arian Foster/Ben Tate… either one. (sadly, I don’t think Slaton will be back to form either)

KR: I think mighty mouse (Trindon Holliday) gets the nod here

by Jahon on May 7, 2010 4:02 PM CDT reply actions

Mike Brisiel is going to start the season on the PUP, at best. Starting guards are Antoine Caldwell and Wade Smith.

And I think you’re thinking too much about the RB position. I don’t see any way it’s not Tate; though I agree Slaton might be permanently out of the running. Tate and Foster will likely be our go-to backs next season.

by krkenney on May 7, 2010 4:42 PM CDT reply actions

Cushing is out for the first game against the Colts. Steriods, dammit!!!!!!

by Jahon on May 7, 2010 5:39 PM CDT reply actions

yeah TIM

Holliday gets the nod for KR that is why they drafted him.. but we wont know till camp starts…

by DieselDeac on May 7, 2010 9:23 PM CDT reply actions

Diles most likely.

I'd assume so

Diles. Then I’d put money on Sharpton winning the WLB slot.

by TexansDC on May 7, 2010 11:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Now that I've had time to digest the news about Cush, I'll give it a go.

QB: Teh Schaub, Orlovsky, Ricky Bobby
RB: Slaton, Tate, Foster, Moats
FB: Leach, no back up for Leach, although I would have liked Grigsby to come back again.
WR: Johnson, Walter, Jones, Anderson
TE: Daniels, Dreeson, Casey
LT: Brown
RT: Winston
LG: Caldwell
RG: Brieiesiesiel
C: Chris Myers

LDE: Smith
DT: Mitchell
DT: Okoye
RDE: Williams
SLB: Diles (Until game 5)
MLB: Ryans
WLB: Adibi
CB: Jackson
CB: Quin
SS: Pollard
FS: Wilson

K: Neil Rackers
P: Matt Turk
KR: Trindon Holliday
PR: Trindon Holliday
LS: Joel Dreessen
