Brian Cushing Suspended 4 Games For Steroids
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Texans LB Brian Cushing got busted for steroids. He appealed the suspension in February and discovered today he had lost his appeal.

I'm not quite so worried about his performance
As i am about his durability.
We have a player with a lengthy injury history, taking something that really helps aid your bodies recovery time. Hmm….

Merriman?
As an aside, it’s part of the reason I’ve long believed steroids help pitchers more than hitters: it helps with recovery.

Attempt at silver lining to follow:
With Cushing out for four games, someone else is going to have to play SLB. Based on the fact that before we drafted Cushing, Zac Diles was our starting SLB, my guess is that he’ll return to that position.
This means that someone will have to step up and play WLB. Either Darryl Sharpton or Xavier Adibi are the most likely. This is probably the best opportunity either one of them will have to unseat Diles at WLB.
On the other hand, we might have Bentley play SLB for the first four games, meaning that we would not only have a sub-par SLB again, but we also would be losing out on the opportunity to see our WLB upgraded.
As a point of clarification, I don’t think that Diles is a bad linebacker, but he can definitely be upgraded. If one of the two WLB backups prove good enough, then some good can come out of this.
Sharpton pick making more sense.
If the FO knew, that is.

Why? Cause Pancakes said this….
Kevin bentley is the top reserve on strong side. I expect him to start in Cushing’s place.
So he’s got to be wrong…

Many questions to be answered…(1) when did he test positive, in-season or offseason?? (2) If it was an offseason positive, did he take them during the season?? (3) What did he take?? (4) How will his play be affected?? (5) How does the defense react weeks 1-4 and when Cush comes back?

My response:
@stephentulloch – Noted, see you in weeks 12 and 15. Now who are you again?
damn I'm mad
considering I planned on going to two of those games he’s suspended for. So glad I didnt pull the trigger on getting his jersey yet this year. I swear if the team doesnt make the playoffs this year I’m holding this faggot personally responsible whether he truly is or not.

What is even more interesting...
on FB the other day he held a “Scavenger hunt” for a pic of fans wearing his jersey… I now believe he knew his appeal was going to go south and wanted to get one last push to buy his jersey before sales plummet.
With all the downsides to Steroids why do people still use them. Bone density loss, testicle shrinkage because of the lessening of in body made testosterone, ROID RAGE, and much more… With all the downsides from the use of steroids and only the slight upside of larger muscles i dont see the benefit to using them…
Am I surprised no, am I disappointed Yes. I now wonder if Cushing is the beast we all believed or if it was due to the artificialness of steroids…

This is unfortunate for you guys. I thought extending Ryans (the best ILB in the league not named Willis, in my humble opinion) was brilliant, and I was expecting the Texans to have one of the best LB corps in the league. The biggest question really is whether or not he pulls a Shawne Merriman, and his production drops off precipitously once not on the juice. Unfortunately, because of my man-crush on MJD I can never root for the Texans to win their division, but I certainly don’t root against them. Here’s hoping it all works out for you guys ::takes a drink of his New Belgium Fat Tire::

There had always been rumors of this from his USC days. If the guy gets off the juice and becomes a less effective player, then this was a really bad first round pick going forward. If it was something they had concerns over, then they really screwed up.

As banged up as it sounded like Cushing was after the regular season he was attempting to use ’roids to recover. It may be unlikely, but he might have been clean for the season and went back to his fix. I really hope that his level of play does not go down if he stays off from the juice.

i am f-ing pissed off. but, i’m still on the cushing bandwagon. he will make up for it with his play when he returns. diles was on his way to a 150 tackles when he played SAM, but got injured. i don’t expect this to cost us any games, but it is a blow to the run defense. we will start the season 3-1, while losing to the cowgirls. man, he let alot of people down. all eyes on the SAM position the first 4 games, diles and/or bentley better make the plays they are supposed to. i’m not to worried, that is experienced quality backups ready to fill in.

Personally
I’ve always believed that EVERY professional athlete is on steroids, it’s only the amount and type that are different. Does that excuse Cushing? Yes and no. He got caught, so everyone can say whatever they want about him. I don’t think it’ll affect him in the locker room from a moral standpoint, but he got caught, and if we end up 1-3 or god forbid 0-4 some people might be pissed at him. The guy was amazing last year, and I’m as pissed and on my way to drunk as anyone.
I really want to think that it won’t affect the team as much as Schaub getting hurt, and that’s true, it won’t. But pro football is a game of inches, and we just lost a foot.
I also really hope he doesn’t pull a Lattimer once he gets back

You Have to Endure Failure Before You Enjoy Success!
So Cushroid is out…. Oh well, I wanted Mathews in that draft, but It is what it is and I greeted and supported Cushing with open arms. Water under the bridge.
We must rember that 11 defensive athletes take the field. I am sure that MY Texans will put the best out there and those 11 will be more than enough for the Colts.
We as TRUE TEXAN fans have to believe. It is through that support and belief of a city that got the Rockets back to back championships… Learn from the example.
Most of those on this blog are along for the ride as denoted in all the negative rhetoric on this years draft… True fans always take point and support the leadership of the organization in their decisions.
Although Cushing is a solid player, he as most of the underpressure players look for a constant edge.. thus he fell into the steroids game…. like Bonds and other top athletes in the past few years. I think with professional help and your positive support Cushing will be back and will just as effective as he was last year. If he falls off a little he will need support and not criticism….

He was always great, and I knew u guys were lucky to get him, but I must say being from the area and seeing him from HS to now this was expected. I hate to see he got caught, and others didnt, but thats the way it goes.
Just wanted to let u guys know this

Fucking. Idiot.
I don’t see how pro athletes think they can get away with PEDs, at any level, in any sport, with random testing. That’s just rolling the dice and asking to get caught.
In any case, I hope he can still be an effective player whilst clean. To say we need him is an understatement.

I would correct one thing though

I say that because even before they are Pro I don’t see how they think they can get away with it. Anyway I would wait on this till more details come out but does suck for y’all.

why wouldn't think they could get away with it?
I gaurantee you that a substantial number never get caught.

how many MLB players weren’t caught?

The didn't test
at all. I really have to wonder how toothless the NFL testing is though that more players don’t get caught when everyone knows the NFL is all roided up.

nope
Our longsnapper got caught a couple of years ago…but a LS doesn’t count. He was part of the group that were supposedly taking legal supps that contained stuff not on the label.

No, you won't. We remember week 16, and the two close losses.
For a team I find unbearable, you Colts fans are good people. It’s nice to have you in the division (Unless we lose to you, or miss the playoffs narrowly, then why did the NFL put an expansion team in the AFC South, the toughest division in the NFL over the past decade.Ugh.) Go Texans.

Like this. And I have yet to see the bad BBS.
Go to Stampede Blue right now
and read this. He upsets some Colts fans when he gets like this. I agree with him in the article to an extent. I don’t agree with the way he went about writing it.

There was just an arrogant
“I Told ya so” attitude and it sounded like he was trying to say he was smarter than the Colts FO. Now, I do think the Thomas pick was a reach in the 3rd for us. Especially since the dude was injury prone coming out of U$C, but the Colts took him anyway. And now they will pay for it. I hated the Thomas pick from the second it left Goodells mouth, but I have learned to TRUST Polian and his decision making

Same thing with Smithiack early on, but they have proven reliable.
Especially in the draft, and we’ve gotten better at not overspending on over the hill free agents.
Please, please
don’t tell me that you believe in the whole “karma” thing and that week 16 is gonna some how come back and bite us in the ass. Because I will have to LOL….if “karma” existed we wouldn’t have gone on kill the highest rated defense in the AFC Championship Game and went on to the Super Bowl.
Our heads may be bloody, but they are unbowed. We will be back next year better than ever!
Indianapolis Colts News and Updates
No, not Karma,
More a home crowd ready to start chewing in to those fifteen losses we have against you guys. And one that would like to see a win even more now after quitting against the Jets (It hurts even more because I was rooting for the Colts the week before, and that week. If only your President and Caldwell had kept Peyton in another quarter, we would have been in the Playoffs, and hate the Colts less [still 1-15 lifetime, got to even that up first]). We shall get revenge in weeks one and eight, AND this time our kicker will not miss, AND there will be no controversial time-out before the two minute warning destroying a drive that would have scored if the ball was snapped, AND no home second half meltdowns (What has it been with us and the Colts with the second half at Reliant since Rosenchoppa?) we shall finally win again and sweep. (Or at the very least keep you from stalling out in the last couple of weeks by keeping up, come on rest of division and help us out with that at least). WE WILL NOT BE FLOOR MATS THIS YEAR!
Ahh....
I see where you’re coming from. Yeah I would be mad if the Colts were relying on the Texans to get in the playoffs and they laid down, but then again it’s the best thing for the teams health. Undefeated meant nothing to me, or the Colts. Look at the Patsies….All those wins and no ring. So I’m glad the Colts didn’t have that pressure. Now, I honestly just don’t see the Texans beating the Colts….especially 2 times in the same year. As a Texans fan I expect you to think the opposite of me, and you are totally entitled to do so. But for me, I don’t see you beating us much until after Manning decides to hang it up. But by then we will have JaMarcus Russel as a QB and then he will kick your ass so you just aren’t gonna win! LMAO
Yes there is rumor the Colts have interest in JaMarcus….I HATE it

Hold up, Frank Reich is your QB coach?
Must he continue to torture the city of Houston? He destroyed my childhood, & now he continues to torture our new team?
I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.
by The Night Owl on May 8, 2010 4:30 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm more surprised that they even bother with a QB Coach...
Now THAT is the cushiest job in the NFL.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Why, Colts backup is the cushiest job in the world.
You never have to play, and you make massive bank until the last week of the season (Not this year however, which is better). I’d love that job, except for the love of the Texans thing.
As for the health thing, an injury can happen anytime and anywhere. It’s smart to try to reduce it, but when at home, with a game with significant playoff implications for a team in your division I kind of think you need to try to help your division mates out (Especially if you have a 15-1 record against them lifetime, and 2-0 in season). But hey we need to step up a bit more and take that decision out of your hands. When the Texans are in that situation though, I hope/ they better go for it, Rest is for the Bye weeks, and if you are already hurt (I follow Ditka on this).
And while we will disagree with what side the sweep will fall on, you have to admit that the gap has never been closer. We have the two best QB’s in the NFL. The Texans have the best WR in the NFL. We have two of the best TE’s in the NFL, and two great D’s. And that is why I look forward to the games against the Colts. And this year when we get our three wins it will be happy (Yes we will meet again at Reliant for the AFC title game. Let me have my far preseason hope, it’s never been this close to real.).
Bahahaha!
Dream big my friend, dream big. But yeah you’re right…the Texans are getting better, but as a Colts fan, I also know that the Colts are getting better. Its hard to believe with all the players they are losing. But it seems everyone steps up when they have to and it makes the team that much better. Good luck on the season!

Alualu
will have not one, but two chances to try to “kill” Manning, and seeings how he’s the least “killed” (sacked) QB in the league, I don’t see that happening. But go ahead and tell Alualu to bring his lunch! Cause its gonna be a long day when he meets greatness!
