i don’t see any threads about Ben Tate and Kareem Jackson signing. But, they did, for an undisclosed amount. everyone is in camp, except for the injured.
Don't ask me! Ask Google, you dumb Yahoo!
They're both just below this post.

Nah
While I agree that most here probably underrate him (cause Myers is pretty good when he’s moving….its just on bull rushers where he struggles), I can’t say that he’s better than Eric Winston.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Okay, I'll grant that.
I guess I was jaded by Winston’s down season last year and the fact that the right side of our offensive line has been notoriously bad at run-blocking. But I like Winston a lot.
Winston's down season
was probably precipitated at least in part by losing both our starting guards.
so did Kareem sign in time to make first practice?
or should that be a tonight thing?

Reporting from training camp..
Glover Quin got tooled twice by AJ for TDs. Connor Barwin and Earl Mitchell lined up on the right side together (2nd team) and the quickness and motor was astonishing. Didn’t see Kareem Jackson.

Apparently....
GQ’s been in the nickle some with Molden and McCain on the outside.
There was a report that GQ wanted to take some more slot. Interesting to see who would be outside opposite KJack if GQ is in the slot.
"Lord, beer me strength."
I'm not 100% sure,
but I think this is what we were doing by the end of last season: in 3-wide sets, Robinson and McCain were playing the wide-outs and Quin was playing the slot. I’m not really sure what advantage this gives us, but I wouldn’t mind if in 3-wide sets we had Jackson and Molden on the outside and Quin in the slot.
Regardless, Molden’s presence on the team (so high on the depth chart) means we’re cutting likely Freddy B; Antwaun was already one of my favorite players, so this is just icing on the cake.
I think it would depend on the WR match-ups
I think you would want to avoid on having McCain on Big strong WR’s or TE’s and keep Quinn away from the speedsters.

The one thing we can put hope in regarding Molden
… is that he’d never had injury problems before. Hopefully after two seasons he’s healed up nicely.
That is exactly what happened last season
Quin looks much more comfortable in the slot.

To add to this....
His size and speed is NFL ideal. He’s about 6’2’’, 200 pounds, and ran a 4.38 during his pre-draft days. Kubes has said that he’s got starter-quality talent, but he just needs to stay healthy.

"Well, at least our players kept their helmets on, so that showed some intelligence"-Bob McNair
by papabear on Jul 30, 2010 3:35 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
No, Walter is solid
If you want a solid WR who can do the intangibles for you like block down field, etc. then Walter is your guy. But if you want a guy who is electric and can be a threat to score every time he touched the ball, he can’t compete with JJ’s play making ability.
It’s a good problem to have on your roster. Too many good WR’s.
by Mike Kerns on Jul 30, 2010 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
The reason why people are opposed to JJ becoming the immediate #2
is because we’re so used to him screwing up – being late to team meetings, muffed punts, etc.
I say, its time to actually give him a legit shot. If he beats out Walter and help out our already dynamic offense, then more power to him.

I agree
Hold him accountable. But if he wins the job in camp, he wins it. No matter what they’re paying Walter.

John Harris on the RB competition
Of all the RBs this morning, there’s a palpable difference in Foster and the rest of guys. Big difference
"Lord, beer me strength."
Re: Foster
Listening to 790 around lunchtime, a talking head who was at training camp (don’t know who) said Foster looked MUCH quicker than Slaton and Tate today.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
To be that fast at 229 pounds....
I’m literally salivating at the thought of what Foster could do against the tiny Colt defensive tackles.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Those tiny tackles
Still have more than 50 pounds on him… and they’re not as tiny as they used to be under Dungy anyhow. The matchup to watch with small tackles is against the offensive linemen, they still plaster a RB if they get a clean shot unless he’s a 275lb freak of nature like Christian Okoye, then maybe we can discuss.
Dragging the point out then.....
Last season, the Colts were 24th against the run. When you consider that most teams had to abandon the run and play catch up via the pass in the second half, that’s more than staggering.
The Colts run the Tampa 2 which means their defense is undersized. Therefore, with all these facts, a bigger running back should have good success against the Colts.
"Lord, beer me strength."
new coach has been moving away from the tampa2

DVOA for the Dolts against the run was 20th
So, yeah, questions.
A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.
http://www.battleredblog.com
They're simply not built to stop the run
It’s Peyton scoring TDs so you have to pass….and if the Colts force you to pass then that speed can get to the QB and force mistakes.
It’s why you always see Seyton always pacing and seething if someone plays ball control football. The only problem is that the Colts are stellar in red zone defense…..and if you can’t cap off drives with 7s then you’re leaving the door open for Peyton.
"Lord, beer me strength."
But as the Dolphins game showed last year, 15 minutes is all he needs to carve you up
I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.
by The Night Owl on Jul 31, 2010 12:51 AM CDT up reply actions
Not entirely true
A good inside runner has the most success against the colts, it just happens that most strong inside runners are bigger than say the Chris Johnsons of the world. It’s not size that’s needed so much as good field vision and a strong burst through the hole when it opens. The back needs some strength, enough to break arm tackles at the line, but he doesn’t have to be a 250lb bruiser to be a strong inside runner.
If you look at history you might see that bigger backs have had the most success against tampa 2 styled defenses, but that’s largely because the vast majority of “big backs” are downhill runners, which is the type of RB that is most successfull… It’s not the size of back that makes for success against the tampa 2, it’s the type of RB and scheme…
But back to my point, it’s not the RB vs DT battle that nets those yards, it’s the OG/C vs those DTs. Very few RBs are really capable of running through a clean tackle attempt of a 300lb DT. It’s the offensive linemen pushing those smaller DTs around so that they don’t have any clean attempts at the rusher that allows the ball carrier to gain good yardage.
Saw that tweet, too.
Harris is twittergold right now.
Maybe a RB’s can actually become a strength of the team. I’d shit myself.

Another corner question:
Where is Reeves in all this? I’d heard rumors he was running as our 5th CB in OTAs, behind Jackson, Quin, Molden, and McCain, but ahead of Bennett and McManis… is this true still? If so, that gives me a lot of confidence in our corners.
Trying to find that out....
All I’ve seen today is that Quin, Molden, and McCain were the top 3 CBs this morning and that Mark Parson had 2 picks in practice with the 3rd team……haven’t seen a word on Bennett, Reeves, and McManis.
"Lord, beer me strength."

That was in 7-on-7 & pos. drills tho. Molden ran #1 RCB in 11-on-11 w/ GQ. McCain/Reeves were the 2’s

Oh, I dunno. Maybe I’m just being a grumpy old man, but I worked construction and dug ditches and played sports in the Houston heat. I do think you can acclimate to it. But I also used to be young and in shape, so there’s that. And we liked it!

I'm with you
I worked road construction in the summer’s while in college. There’s nothng like 500 degree asphalt on an August afternoon. You learn to deal with it….or more likely just give in and stop bitching about it, but you can’t truly acclimate to it. There’s been studies or something.

but in all seriousness, there absolutely is truth behind the heat draining players during camp. I mean, look no further than Diles having to get an IV…thats directly because their physical fitness has been compromised by training in the heat..and you don’t get acclimated to that. Their certainly not getting IVs put in at training camps in California or New England.

Any team in the league would have looked unprepared and confused
No one knew what to expect from the Jets last year on offense or defense and they got off to a hot start because of it. They slowed down later in the season when teams had a chance to see what they were about and were able to properly prepare for them and only made the playoffs because the last two teams they played mailed it in and didn’t even try.

I thought molden is similar to bennet in the fact that he stuggles with stop routes (and lacks the overall football instincts when playing off) but excells in press man…and unfortunately we continue to use cushions when playing our cover 2, which i dont understand. On the other hand i think parson played well and i hope he gets a legit shot at making the team, no becuase he had two picks (one was nice, the other was a route where jacoby had him beat but just slipped and fell) but because he actually has good instincts

Russell is not good.
He should have had an easy pick in the NE game, only he doesn’t have what some analysts refer to as “closing speed”.
That’s too nice. He’s slow.

DT and moving CBs to safety
On the site there’s a lot of talk about DTs but hardly any talk about Frank Okam. Has he been on the field today? What team? Is there any upside to him?
Also, have any of our many CBs been taking reps as safeties? There’s been talk about many of them being better suited at S.

All I saw mentioning Okam....
was that he was working 2nd team and had one play where he blew up Wade Smith.

I think about 138% of all the talk of moving a CB to S is nothing more than unrequited fantasy-land material. But, I mean, when Eugene Wilson is your starting FS and Dom Barber is his backup? I’m going to mentally check out one way or the other.

282?
He’s only 1 pound lighter than Amobi which is roughly equivalent to Earl Mitchell.
"Lord, beer me strength."
He isn't the only one.
But with your defensive linemen weighing 290, 280, 300, and 280, you’re not in awful shape.
When they weigh 290, 280, 280, and 260, you’re setting yourself up for horrible, horrible failure.

I know a lot of baseball teams have been getting with the blogs
Hopefully more football teams(ie the texans) can figure it out too.
doubt they'll ever even give us an inch
Smithiak is just way too close-vested and savvy, to be blowing their cover about who their next favorite TE draft prospect is, or even with attempts at entertaining us -with what we, the masses, would absolutely love to know about and to hear.
Instead, all we’ll ever get is Smithiak telling us what they want us to know and to hear.
Which is not a bad thing, if we like winning. Besides, it’s entertainment enough, realizing just how much they send Pancakes around in circles. It’s classic.
Baseball is a more natural fit. Everything is much out in the open, during a baseball season. Football can sometimes be infinitely more complex.
So naturally, the next step is probably Jerruh allowing BTB official access with the Dallas Cowards? How delicious.

I'd rather Xavier Adibi
I think he brings a lot to the table as a pass-rusher and in coverage. I think he could soften the blow of losing Cushing for 4 games the most.

Watched the one one one line drills
It seemed to me that the centers and guards were performing the best – footwork particularly. None of them ever lost their feet or let anybody near the quarterback (played by Bruce Matthews), even against spin moves, bullrushes, etc. A particular standout was Mike Brisiel. He withstood a few bullrushes like a brick wall and took defenders to the ground a couple times. Chris Myers also looked very good.
On the defense side, tackle standouts were Okoye, Okam and Earl Mitchell, for opposite reasons. Amobi did not look like he was trying that hard, Okam looked slow and weak, but Mitchell is Mr Motor. He stood out most in full team scrimmage. In the individual drills, his rookiedom showed, but the effort was there. He also replaces Zgonina as Mr Huge Calves.

Some thoughts with this open thread.
Here goes:
1. Be careful from judging too much from reports out of camp. Very limited sample sizes. So much is going on with folks on different fields that what looks good from one angle, looks not so good from another angle. I want to start this off with this comment because I don’t want people to ove-emphasize my report or anyone’s report. And the coach’s reports, you can’t always completely trust those either. But you know that.
2. I think AJ was just AJ. I don’t think that it was so much a burnanator of GQ but rather a really good pitch and catch of two very good players..
3. Molden didn’t stand out to me as doing a particularly remarkable job. Not remarkable good or bad. So maybe that is good.
4. Camp standouts to me were Andre Johnson and Arian Foster…hard for the defense to really shine when they can’t hit the crud out of anyone. I agree with what John Harris was saying about Foster. He just looked like he popped…like Slaton did in his rookie year at camp where you just thought…whooosh. In interviews, Foster seemed much more comfortable with the playbook this year than last (more than just the quotes in the mothership). Tate, OTOH, did not feel very comfortable but that is to be expected first day of camp. Here’s my really generalized writeup of camp at FanHouse http://bit.ly/b0s8OX (headline not mine. Not my best work because the 105 heat index gave me a blinding, nearly throwupable headache but I had to get this done by deadline. As you may recall, Texans bloggers sometimes suffer from strange, untimely ailments. See e.g. MDC):
5. The offense, with the exception of AJ/Foster did not look particularly sharp, but Orlovsky in particular needs to have some better practices very soon. Had some nice throws, but every once in a while there would be something really off.
6. When you use the WRs in the short game as sort of a substitute running game to keep moving the chains, the coaches want hands of glue. In 1 on 1 WR/drills, best hands looked like AJ, Walters, Anderson (first tier), then Jacoby, then much down from that Dickerson and Holliday. In just few reps in drill situations, Dickerson looked good with some long throws, had a little trouble with short throw with heat. Holliday during one drill fell down when doing a cut, and didn’t have timing with the quarterback on a long throw though he did have some separation.
7. Didn’t witness any kicking competition today though I don’t know if I just missed it. Rackers and Brown were having an autograph signing competition—they were two of the few players who went to the stands after practice and signed stuff.
I’m going to try to go to as much camp as my life allows. And I will try to visit here.

I do think it’s more important at this point just to see where the coaching staff has the players start out. i.e. who is running with second/third string.

Thank Durga the offseason is drawing to a close...
I was growing tired of reading and reading and reading. It’s time to start watching and analyzing again.
On a side note, I’ve gotta say this now so I can claim it later on when the time comes, but Smith will make a mid-season signing or trade acquisition (with signing being most likely because let’s face it, trades are a dime a dozen these days in the NFL) for a mediocre to decent talent that will give us depth at a needed position. And it will definitely be defense.
Oh, and P.S…I apologize here and now for my time away from posting here. Life throws ya curve balls sometimes. I’m back now, though, and ready for this season to get here already.
