Texans' Training Camp Open Thread - Day 2

Photo

Bob Levey - Getty Images

Sorry for the delay in getting a post up this morning as, unlike others who went on a romantic date together, I worked late last night.  Drop your Day 2 thoughts here.  But not before I leave you with some wisdom spewed last night:

I THINK A LOT OF INTERESTING THINGS HAPPEN ON THE INTERNET! AND I THINK SOME OF THOSE THINGS INVOLVE ME!

Think about that.

SAY NO MORE BIG RON!
BigRon281

Quick interior OL take from 1st 2 AM sessions: 63 & 65 both better than 64 at LG. Studdard should be a backup, IMHO. #earlyshotcalled

Man, Andre Davis beat Kareem Jackson for 6 on about a 50 yd. corner-post. Had him done by 4-5 steps. K-Jax has been just ok so far.

Not really a surprise

Jackson in his 2nd NFL practice….Davis fighting for a roster spot

If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?

Yes, I expect AD not to give up without a fight. He is no slouch and if he still has it, he will show it

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

Not clear on NFL trade rules..could someone please help me out

AD could be the odd man out, but he certainly will find a spot somewhere if not in Houston. Any chance we can snag a low rounder for him?

He looked really good today

Caught a lot of balls in addition to the TD. Didn’t look so hot on the one return he had on special teams practice, though. Speaking of special teams, man, I hope Trindon Holliday at least gets to play in the first pre-season game. He took two returns today to the house, one to the left side, the other to the right. All the defenders could do was grasp at air.

by LedTexan on Jul 31, 2010 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions

What's that?

Oh my. I believe I’m sexually aroused after reading about Holliday.

even if he looks like a nonfactor at WR, he should make this team on his return potential alone…Billy White Shoes reincarnate.

John Harris with some comments on Molden
very stiff, good long speed which is why he can cover deep but change of direction has been weak.

scouts/other coaches I know say much the same…fast, injuries haven’t allowed real development of CB skills.

by TexansDC on Jul 31, 2010 10:29 AM CDT reply actions

Burge and Big Ron disagree, both like what they've seen.....say he's got starter potential.

Either way, Molden makes this team. Either as a 3/4 CB or possibly a move to FS (remember the C2Z FS has deep responsibility…..so, that should be something in the back of the mind).

im not knocking it you might be right but at the same time

what makes him so bad? We did not have a running game last year maybe he is a hellva a run blocker, just maybe.

by southpaw70 on Jul 31, 2010 10:49 AM CDT up reply actions

Studdard

gave up the 5th most sacks, 7th most pressures of any guard.

Run blocking is harder to grade without watching every snap, but PFF rates running behind the LG the worst of any hole for the Texans. FO has running to the left side as the weakest part of the run game….and just watching Studdard, he’s just too slow, stands up a lot, and doesn’t really do much of anything out there.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Jul 31, 2010 10:54 AM CDT up reply actions

damnnnn

good stuff, i was wondering if he was playing lg or rg. If RG then he may have a chance.

by southpaw70 on Jul 31, 2010 10:56 AM CDT up reply actions

If you could find someone that has marginal skills and is young enough to take a chance on

…then cut Studdard and give the other guy a chance to grow into the system. The Texans have Brisiel coming back and Wade Smith bolstering the depth chart. That makes Studdard expendable and makes room for a young guy with a future. Who would that be? Shelley Smith? He can take Studdard’s spot on the roster and the O-Line wouldn’t skip a beat.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Jul 31, 2010 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions

From Nick Scurfield's blog re: Brisiel's health
Coming off of a season-ending Lisfranc injury to his left foot, Mike Brisiel is looking to reclaim a starting spot on the interior offensive line. But he’s also still feeling the effects of his injury, which he suffered at Arizona last season on Oct. 11. "It’s just one of those things, the doctor said it’s going to be pretty painful for about 15 months, but it’s just dealing with the pain," Brisiel said. "I don’t think I can hurt it anymore than it already is… You’ve just kind of got to grit and bear through the pain."

by southpaw70 on Jul 31, 2010 10:45 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah....

on screens or zone blocking, he’s fine. Does the job. When it comes to pass blocking, bull rushing NTs is where he struggles. Aside from Nick Mangold, most centers struggle with that kind of thing….just a matter of him getting off quicker.

Not great, but he’s an All-Pro compared to 64.

Agree with what TDC said

There really aren’t many Cs who can handle Jenkins and Ngata 1-on-1.

With Myers, and I know Rivers disagrees, he’s very quick, and I don’t think there’s a C better at blocking at the second level. He does a fantastic job on screens. PFF grades him out very highly (8th overall at C), but he does give up a lot of pressures (13, 5th worst).

As a center...

you see the 4-3 most often. You’re more used to seeing the second level. It’s not an excuse cause he’s a pro and should be better especially if it’s someone right in front of you, but that’s what a center more traditionally sees….the MLB/2nd level.

Gil Brandt of SIRIUS NFL Radio was a spectator at practice. He and Vic Carucci of NFL.com will broadcast live from Reliant Stadium from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. CT tomorrow (Saturday) on SIRIUS. by Rip Jersey on Jul 31, 2010 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I think that's a little beside the point.

We have a logjam on guard, defensive line, corner, and tight end. We already have 6 WRs. We can’t really afford to carry a superfluous 4th runningback for returns right now.

by krkenney on Jul 31, 2010 12:04 PM CDT up reply actions

ESPN is saying Rosenfels is back on the block.

Considering Orlovsky looks awful, maybe we should trade for him back. I think we could ship them a 7th.

Possible...

certainly possible. I suspect they’d let Dan O get a chance to prove himself during preseason games before they make a move.

I wish they had picked up Marc Bulger when they had the chance though.

He may not have starting qualities that everyone wants, but he is a damn solid back up.

would they even consider Sage coming back. I don’t think I can handle another Rosencoptor in my life….

Afternoon Mort Segment Recap (Morning is in the day 1 thread)

Kubiak says that you have to learn how to play close games. Thinks last season was a big learning experience. Team needs experience.

What needs to improve? Schaub: Red zone offense, running the ball….gotta score TDs. Gotta be consistent.

Kubiak: We have to get to the playoffs first.

Schaub wants to get his INTs down, possibly to single digits. Knows a good running game will bring his numbers down, but he welcomes it.

OD’s status: Had a minor setback a few weeks ago. More focused on getting him ready for Indy. He’s expected back for that game.

Cushing: Working with the 1st team still. Will be there through camp.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Jul 31, 2010 12:27 PM CDT reply actions

I would like to see the other LB's get some reps with the first unit to get a little more chemistry as training camp progresses

since one of em will be playing that spot the first 4 games (Im guessing the front runner is Diles)— at this point

by HB23 on Jul 31, 2010 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Diles will be weak-side linebacker

Kubiak has already said he wants to leave Diles there to build on what he did last year. Cushing’s spot will probably go to Adibi, with Clark and Sharpton competing behind him.

Interesting about Arian Foster

I’m a Philosophy minor and I love it. It’s always fascinating to me to find players who are in extremely intellectual studies in college and not just the Sports Management, Business Management, or Psychology majors.

He is going to go overboard.

Every interview he had with 1560 or 610 he said, “I can’t wait to hit somebody.” That’s just his nature I guess.

I have a serious man-crush on Pollard...
Since joining the Texans in time for Week 4 last season, safety Bernard Pollard has become one of the most vocal leaders on the team. Besides encouraging and coaching young players in the secondary like cornerback Brice McCain, strong safety Troy Nolan and cornerback Kareem Jackson, Pollard is speaking up for the offense, too.

From the sideline, Pollard shouted to quarterback Dan Orlovsky, “Don’t be afraid to throw it down the field.”

Orlovsky then completed a 10-yard pass to one of his receivers near the sideline opposite Pollard. Orlovsky must not have heard him.

And...I don't care...

If Orlovsky heard him or not, but that Pollard is willing to do that for his teammates it’s really unheard of in this era of the NFL. I am SO glad they got Pollard signed to a good deal, we need him.

when I watched that before I always thought Pollard just lowered his shoulder and blasted the running back, but Pollard actually wrapped the guy up and laid an impressive tackle body slam on that him.

And that hit always give me a woody.

So What's The End Of Day Results?

1. Other than AD burning Jackson for a TD how did he fair?
2. How does the overall secondary look?
2. Was there any activity from the Brown vs Rackers competition?
3. What’s the word on the running backs?
4. Is OD training at full speed?
5. How is the slimmed down Okoye looking?

by TexanSchmackDown on Aug 1, 2010 12:55 AM CDT reply actions

Let's see what I can answer....

1. Jackson looks good at times, looks like a rookie at others. He’s just got to see, experience, and learn.

2. Secondary looks the same. That’s the problem with youth.

3. From an AP Article: “Kubiak said kickers Kris Brown and Neil Rackers will join full team practices on Tuesday. The two have been working on separate fields away from the team since training camp began.” I would bet no one has seen them aside from the coaches.

4. The running backs…..Foster looks the best……Jeremiah Johnson looks like good…..Tate looks a bit timid……haven’t heard much on Slaton.

5. OD is not participating in practice. All I’ve heard is that he rides a bike or interacts with fans.

6. Okoye…..some think he looks better, some think he looks the same…..probably won’t know until the games.

"Lord, beer me strength."

My thoughts...

1) The Texans are a 1st class organization in my book because they treated the Chinese Exchange Students I brought with me Saturday like VIPs. We got to hang out near the media area during the entire practice & they introduced them to several of the players to get their autographs.

2) Holliday is going to make the roster because he frees up Jacoby Jones to become a serious threat at receiver. No way they keep AD with his contract when they have Anderson and Martinez at #4 & #5 slots. Frank, one of the Chinese students, got a real good picture of Holliday coming down the right sideline with Slaton trailing behind. I hope to have that pic later today to post on Twitter.

3) Okoye looked like he was ready for some MMA with the guns he was carrying on him. If he doesn’t cut the mustard this year, it won’t be because he is out of shape that’s for sure.

4) Foster stood out the most during running plays, however, with four RBs trying to get snaps, it’s hard to get a good feel.

I’m am definitely excited about the upcoming season!
