KC Joyner: Amobi Okoye Drew Two Blockers 56.4% Of The Time On Running Plays Last Year
That's a higher double-team rate than Kris Jenkins, Vince Wilfork, Albert Haynesworth, and Jason Ferguson.
Very interesting read, though it is an "Insider" piece.

Maybe that is a condemnation of the rest of the D-line
More than a badge of honor for Okoye….
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

I think that's shows
How bad we are at DT as a whole. It also explains why Shaun Cody looked better than average
This kid is the key to the defense, and Earl Mitchell hopefully is right on his ass and will be the reason okoye finally “gets it”.
I’m thinking he is running out of chances even if he is only three months older than Mitchell himself

So what you're saying....
is that Amobi was our nose tackle and couldn’t handle that role….and thus, the Texans would benefit from a true, bigger nose tackle?

Shootin' dead fish in a barrel
Of course, this is why Pancakes calls Okoye our “run-stopper.” It takes a whole lot of (specious) logic to draw that conclusion.

Didn't throw this up on SBNH because they ask me to reel in the nerdy stats if I can
But I really read it as an indictment of Shaun Cody more than anything.
It’s okay though, Bryan will be here soon to show us the light.

Who knows?
Maybe Mitchell is competition for Cody and not Amobi. If Amobi is drawing a bunch of double teams then it stands to reason that the other interior lineman should be getting by their guys. Something to consider.

Amobi Okoye Inc.
I knew we were in trouble when Okoye was quoted after the draft saying that he was going to treat his body like a corporation. He will never have the mentality to be more than an average DL in anything but a contract year.

I'm not really sure how that follows.

easy
Wouldn’t you rather have a player say to hell with my body, I’m going out there like a crazed dog and hit everything moving. With that comment he was clearly (imo) stating that health and money are his primary concerns.

No, I wouldn't.
A professional athlete makes his living through his body. I’d want a player who is aware of that and takes care of his body accordingly. Say what you will about Amobi, he is better than the alternatives (at this point). Losing Amobi because he says to hell with his body and does something to get himself hurt would be stupid.

It makes perfect sense
That is the Okoye we have seen. He is just filling a position that the team has had no other competition for. Also, he gets paid whether he plays hard or not. Heck, he gets paid whether he plays or not. But, perhaps now with EMFM here to steal his spot, he’ll put out more. His effort has been lacking. At this point in his career, he is one mediocre season away from being a total disappointment, if not a bust. The coaches who are usually very guarded about making comments about those subjects have pretty much almost made that statement. If Okoye has it in him, EMFM should be the kick in the ass to get him playing the way he is capable of playing.
But Okoye’s statement of his body being a corporation makes perfect sense to me. Why push the limits if you don’t have to. Contract year? Yes. Any other year? No. Unless you are at risk to lose your starting spot…..

Hmmm...
I, for one, would like to think the days of the super-macho athlete are over. Fact is, you can hurt your team by playing injured, either by immediate loss of performance or by long-term absence.
Personally, I’ve never gotten the impression Okoye isn’t out there every play.
A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.

Hmmmm...
So, what I am reading is a contradiction of an explanation. You say it is okay to take plays off so the player doesn’t get hurt thereby taking himself out of the game due to injury or making himself not as effective and hurting the team. Then you say that Okoye has never taken a play off.
What can I conclude? Okoye plays hard and is therefore ineffective without playing hurt? Maybe that is exactly what you are saying. Maybe…
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
No no no
Nothing about taking plays off. BUT, I am talking about throwing one’s body around like a suicidal ninja versus playing smart and within yourself. There is a difference.
After reading the article, wow, we really don’t know what we expect from Okoye. Or what we want from him, either.
A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.

Okay....
If I’m the coach, owner or GM, I’ve had enough of playing within oneself. I want more suicidal ninja for the 1st round money we’re paying him….
So, if playing within oneself is another way of saying “my body is my corporation”, then….don’t be surprised if the hungry 3rd rounder comes in and shows you why he has the FM-tag as his moniker. This will only improve this team. This is just the ticket!

If you're the coach, owner and GM and have invested millions in a player
I don’t think you want a suicidal ninja. You want a professional who is going to execute to the best of his ability. Whether or not Amobi is currently doing that is somewhat of a separate discussion, although I admit he’s not. The question is whether or not being more reckless with his body is going to change that, and in my opinion the answer is that it isn’t.
Although I fully agree that bringing Earl Mitchell into the fold is a good thing (at least from a perspective of getting more out of Amobi). I still would rather have had Galacticus myself.

expectations
I think we all wanted Warren Sapp but would settle for Gary Walker. Unfortunately it looks like we got Travis Johnson.

Travis Johnson had something like one sack the whole time he was in Houston.
Very bad comparison.

True
also, Okoye has yet to miss practice with an inflamed pelvis….or have his member blessed by the Pope
If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?
I felt Okoyes lack of production
was a result of him being young and body not mature enuf to consistently bang with grown ass men.. but I can see it also bein a product of laziness lack of training hard and preparation to be productive, cuz afterall, he did start his rookie season on fire and he was 19? every since that Carolina game he dominated it looks like he hanst had the same motor and drive, players in HOU sports sure get complacent when theycome here, and Im glad we drafted Mitchell to take his place if he tanks again.. thats my take on it, hope Im wrong and the light finally “clicks” and stays on
Rockets-Texans-Dynamo-Longhorn fan.. used to be Astros too, but not sure there a pro team anymore
I hope I'm not dominating this thread too much...
But, the last player who I saw receive this treatment from the coaches…kinda-sorta is Fred Bennett. Do you see the correlation? It has taken a different path getting here, but it is beginning to sound like Okoye may (or may not) end up in a similar situation as Bennett; and that is finding his butt riding the pine.
