About the heat
On Friday, many of the players did seem to be struggling with the heat. Some did not. I mentioned in my post that Earl Mitchell looked great in team drills and fiery but raw in one on ones. He didn’t look too affected. But he’s from Houston.
I grew up in CT, and when I played, an 80 degree day was awful to me. So it was with amazement that I watched my nephew and the other pee wee kids I coached having no problem at all with the heat. Neither of my Houston bred nephews had any trouble with 100 degree heat index + pads then or all through high school.
I know I’d about die trying to play in this. So the “it’s really hot” excuse probably matters more to some players than others.
Damn.......
Maybe Jason Cole at yahoo! sports wasn’t that wrong.
On a side note, about a week ago a veteran player (now retired) commented that Kareem Jackson was good up close, but did not have the speed to turn and run wth NFL WRs. The reports from camp seem to be echoing prediction.
7-9 / 8-8 is starting to look more plausible I think.
If the DBs can’t get it together, we better hope the offense can throw up 31 points per game.
Anyway, it is still early so hopefully the pre-season games get the DB’s in shape.

"Excuses"
WRs have the natural advantage in 1-on-1 type drills.
We have the best WR corps in the league.
But, still, there’s some potential weakness in our secondary – as there was last year – and it’s a big reason I’m concerned about our overall defense. We can’t stack the box like we did last year. We need to get consistent pressure on the QB to keep the heat off our DBs.

its practice
I’m seeing way to many definitive statements based on a few practices. On the DB’s….WR have the advantage anyway…throw in the QB NT having to worry about getting hit, and the WR should win most of the battles. Our WR’s win most battles on game day too…practicing against Schaub,AJ, and company everyday will only make them better. Learning responsibilities and worming on technique is more important than results…for now.

it's all about recognizing the hole amd going straight downhill
Don’t have to be especially fast or especially powerful. You just need to be able to make the right read and burst through the seam…once you get to the second level all bets are off and beig able to break tackles, or elude them all together, is the difference between a star and just a solid RB in this system.

I think for the most part
Mitchell is a good player, but it’s the fact that he isn’t the kind of player the, er, “braintrust” wanted that makes him symbolize things that he shouldn’t.

Similar in nature to...
how the word braintrust would lead one of lesser understanding to think certain people share a brain.
In all seriousness though, from what I’ve read and been able to ascertain, Mitchell is quick footwork-wise. Can anyone confirm or deny this? It may be against the grain to consider this, but if Mitchell is as quick-footed as I’ve been led to believe, he might just be what certain brain-sharing entities didn’t want…but maybe exactly what we need.
I think guys like Mitchell and Sheppard also provide more flexibility on the defensive line.
Considering Mitchell is faster than half of our defensive ends and Sheppard played defensive end in college, we might be able to rotate them in at DE and cut out having to keep around players like Jesse Nading, Tim Jamison, and Pannel Egboh for the sake of depth.
If we can get by carrying only Okoye, Cody, Sheppard, Mitchell, Williams, A. Smith, Barwin, and Bulman, we can get by carrying an extra TE, extra WR, and an extra corner.
He has great technique with his feet and gets real low.
I mean, he wasn’t dominating the point of attack on every play or anything, like McClain would lead you to believe. But he looked good out there.

One thing to keep in mind: defense always takes longer to come together than offense.
That’s an age-old football adage that we always used to get told in spring training.
I also want to point out that all of the defensive backs look good covering everyone except Andre.
At least, that’s what I’m getting from the reports, anyhow. Molden sounds a lot better today. Kareem has covered K-Dub, Davis, and Holliday (at least) well… and there’s no pass-rush in most of the things being reported.
They got toasted pretty bad out there today.
Although Bennett got the brunt of the burn. Only Quin was really spared and he spent a lot of time inside.

went to the first two days of camp and Graham’s hands were not to great! On Saturday he had five balls thrown to him and he caught one pass. Joel dropped one ball and Casey caught all of his passes and he was the best blocking TE. I can not tell much difference between the free agent and Graham!

Day 3 quotes are out.
My favorite one from Pollard:
(on feeling like if he overload CB Kareem Jackson on defense) “You cannot overload. I do not think when (CB) Kareem (Jackson) signed his deal, did he say ‘you are overloading me with this check.’ This is a great game. This is a great game and we all play it. We get paid a lot of money to play this game. I think coming on as a rookie it is a lot different than college football. When you step in between these lines and you get placed with the first team, you know it is an expectation. You have got to have expectations and goals that you have to reach and you have got to be accountable. We are holding him accountable to know his side of the playbook. We are holding him accountable to carry himself on and off this field.”

Thank You, K.C. and every other team that didn't sign him!
Pollard, the greatest gift the Texans organization has ever received or could ever ask for. How did we pick this guy up off the street? Nobody wanted him, his stats were good in KC. His play and intensity were exactly what this team needed. It just baffles me how we got him, things like that don’t happen to Houston teams. I mean we trade for a guy like Buchanon and the guy is shit. We sign a guy off the street and he is a future Pro-Bowler, it’s a crazy league to say the least. I was there Sunday
Apologies for not tweeting much but I find it hard to tweet at camp and watch at the same time—lots of stuff going on. I also am very cautious about what I tweet because I worry some that people read too much into individual things that happen on a particular camp day. (My twitter audience has diehards that see all Texans tweeters, but also general NFL fans trying to learn about the Texans, so I don’t want to tweet too much, or say things that people will blow up into something bigger).
I totally understand the desperation of fans to figure out what is going on, and I will be sharing that because I won’t be able to get to camp this week. I’ve asked the HT.com staff to put as much camp stuff as possible on the mothership.
Here’s some thoughts through the Sunday AM practice:
1. It will be a miracle if they can get Trindon Holliday to function as a WR. He struggled with it at OTAs, and in drills, you see him drop more catches than he grabs. Punts could be an adventure too—on a no cloud day, Holliday and Jacoby were either taking punts to the house or mufffing/fumbling.
2. Camp improvements in a few days: I thought Dickerson/Tate are my votes for most improved.
3. Can’t read too much into CBs getting burned. 1 on 1 drills there is no pass rush, and even with a 11 on 11s, there were times when Orlovsky in particular would have got killed in a real game for holding the ball too long. Players avoided killing him but he would have got killed. Kubiak yelled once at Orlovsky to get rid of the ball.
4. I would pay money to hear Bernard Pollard miked up. Just the stuff you can hear him say is hilarious. It was good to see the camp quotes from both Pollard/Kubiak that acknowledge that Pollard needs to not cross the line at camp or during games.
5. I would like to remind everyone here that Andre Johnson is special. I mean, you know that, but we are privileged to watch him play, and we may never see such a remarkable wide receiver ever again. We are watching history. During 1 on 1 drills, he did a move that was so stop on a dime sudden, that it made me flinch and the cornerback just ankle broke (don’t remember the CB—I was just so stunned that somebody that big could be running what looked to be full speed and then just stop). He ran that route like it were a game.
6. Mario sat out Sunday as a precaution due to his hip. On Saturday, I saw a trainer stretching him out on the field while they were doing drills.
