Slaton

I know we don’t want to lose him, but I think they must be questioning if he is for real or if he is just a mirage. We have to answer the question before the season starts.

hoping slaton has a big game

so that he can gain confidence in himself, and coaches…also Holliday needs a nice game.

Also want Sharpton to own this game, and hopefully start for Cushing game 1!

better gap assignments

I felt our defense overpursued on a lot of plays and it opened ourselves up to the delayed hand off and draw play. I would like to see a little more awareness from our defense and put a hit on the RB on the way to the QB.

I think the over pursuit is more a symptom of their new-found "dominate attitude" than anything else.

Once they calm down and focus we should see less of that.

same thought.

i was thinking 1st preseason game + nerves + adrenaline = overpursuit. on that big hit play by pollard, all three LB’s (cush, cap, AND diles) were all sucked into the line. on another play, cush had a free shot at the QB and went for the running back instead. with time hopefully these things will get ironed out.

Yes

If Cushing hadn’t taken the bait on that one, Leinart was absolutely dead to rights.

Which means GASP it was a well-designed blitz!

KJ

Can i get a Kareem Jackson siting?

Slaton should have the Reggie Bush roll on our team…more catches and less carries…he is a play maker no doubt, but fumbles trumph that. Papa Shan approves

Kasey Studdard on the 3rd team

Our DT’s start going bananas up in there, up in there! pipe dreams…

JJ and C. Henry tear up the field, so we don’t have to pretend we don’t care that our electrifying rookie RB, who was drafted in the 2nd round, just went down for the season in the 1st preseason game.

Not to get ripped apart in the short passing game

Despite the starting defense stopping the starting Cardinal offense, one thing I noticed was that whenever we didn’t get to the QB we gave up an easy pass reception. Our zone is just a little bit too loose in my opinion. Our two starting corners played very well against the run and AFTER the reception last game, but they need to do a better job of preventing those passes… and our LB coverage… eew.

Not an expert but...

An occasional big play by our linebackers in coverage means an upgrade from eew.

by USMC_Texas on Aug 18, 2010 10:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Not in my opinion

You judge overall coverage based on every passing play… If you’re allowing the QB to complete 65-70% of his passes and give up 10 first downs passing for every INT, you’re probably also going to be giving up alot of points and field position on average.

by Bryan72076 on Aug 18, 2010 10:46 AM CDT up reply actions

We were fortunate

To be playing against a team that’s trying to replace a pro bowl QB and one of the top tiered WRs in the league. The Cardinals are likely to be a mess this season, and we allowed Leinart who has struggled with accuracy since coming into the league to complete 85% of his passes and a 95.8 QB rating. Our 2 INTs didn’t come untill after the starters went out.

This worries me when we play against elite passing offenses such as the Colts. This game with the Saints will provide some insight maybe depending on how much starters from both teams play, which is why I said that’s what i’m looking for most. If we can keep the Saints starting offense from nickle and diming us up and down the field, then I could see light at the end of the tunnel. If we don’t, however, it could be a telling sign of what to expect week 1 vs the Colts.

by Bryan72076 on Aug 18, 2010 10:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Of course we gave up a easy pass reception

that’s how the zone works. Most of those catches (1st team unit) weren’t the fault of the CBs. The WRs slipped between zones.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Aug 18, 2010 10:06 AM CDT up reply actions

I doubt they design defenses

To give up easy receptions. Most teams try to design their zones to limit the space “between zones”, especially on the 5-10 yard passes they were hitting us with last game… That and playing a form of cover 2 as we were for much of the game, your CBs are typically playing closer to the line of scrimmage and should be able to interrupt the recievers route at the line, forcing them to be either ahead or behind where they should be on the play…

There are many different ways to cover the pass in football and even many different ways of playing the zone, all i’m saying is that zone they played last night would scare the crap out of me if we were set to kick off the season vs the Colts this week.

by Bryan72076 on Aug 18, 2010 11:03 AM CDT up reply actions

No one designs a defense to give up easy receptions, but this is a weakness of the zone when defenders are responsible for large pockets of field. There are going to be seams.

As with any zone defense, the C2 is designed to keep things in front of the defense. That’s why there is such an emphasis on tackling secondary because you want to tackle immediately.

A QB with time will find those seams. That’s why the pass rush needs to be good…that’s why you constantly have to switch zone assignments so the QB has to think….yes, that’s why Frank Bush needs to allow his CBs to jam more…..but ultimately, the zone defense can be beaten if a QB doesn’t see any pressure. When Leinart completed a throw, he had time. It’s what everyone had been talking about in the off-season: gotta improve the pass rush to help out the secondary.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Aug 18, 2010 11:08 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

The key there is "with time"

The cover 2 is supposed to be strong against the underneath routes, and the corners are usually free to jam WRs off the line to further disrupt the short passing game. The weaknesses to the cover two are mostly deep routes, there is a weakness on the wide strong side about 10-15 yards deep, but other than that the zone as it’s designed is pretty tight on the short stuff… if it’s played effectively. It does however hinge on the LBs being able to seal off the outside curls, it’s usually either poor coverage from the LBs or the corners playing too soft that compromises the cover2… otherwise it can be a very effective defense against the short passing game and when combined with a respectable passrush the QB generally won’t have the time to exploit the defense’s true weaknesses, which is down the field.

by Bryan72076 on Aug 18, 2010 12:08 PM CDT up reply actions

I’m not getting into a whole thing, but the Cover-2 is weakest on the seams which is traditionally exploited by a TE. Our LBs aren’t the best in coverage to begin with, combine both facts and you see why the Texans were 29th in coverage against a TE.

As for jamming a receiver, yes…that would help a lot, but Frank Bush doesn’t always call for a jam. Heck, I don’t even know if he does it half the time which is odd considering that he likes his physical cornerbacks (this will be something I keep track of more in the Saint game).

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Aug 18, 2010 12:14 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

about 3-5 seconds if there is no pressure on the QB

Like the Texans, the Saints passing game is based on timing. Give either QB time and he will find a receiver and if you give him a seam it makes it all the more easier.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Aug 18, 2010 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions

True

Which is why you need a decent pass rush to compliment the cover 2, and also why we’ve had trouble running it in recent years. We’ve been forced into playing very soft zone to prevent the deep ball, and haven’t had a consistent pass rush, so QBs have been able to sit in the pocket and pick us apart.

by Bryan72076 on Aug 18, 2010 1:04 PM CDT up reply actions

agreed, Bryan

Tightening up the pass defense and trying to balance that with maintaining the run defense…very key. Wish I was in the team meetings to hear what they talk about. But, I can only imagine that this is a hot topic. The Saints will be a good test for the, hopefully, blossoming Texans defense. Very key week. Also, hope to see the 1st stringers play more in the game to really see what they are made of.

to see how KJax can do against a potent passing threat in his first NFL appearance. I think we will see a lot more from everybody now that that first showing is out of the way. The young guys will hopefully come out with more confidence.

Other than that, I want another T. Nolan pick, another Bonecrusher (preferably on Bush) smackdown, another Schaub/Dre connection, and def some more evidence of increased intensity from Mario and such. AND CAN I GET MORE THAN A CHIPSHOT FIELDGOAL IN A KICKING BATTLE PLEASE??

According to Kuharsky, you didn't miss a thing
METAIRIE, La. – The Texans-Saints practice this morning was poorly attended, relatively short and pretty uneventful.

    * New Orleans dropped more passes than you’d expect from a defending Super Bowl champ, which made life easier on rookie corner Kareem Jackson in seven-on-seven work than it should have been.
    * In a team period I saw Jackson break well on a ball aimed for Lance Moore and he made it difficult for the receiver to pull in the 12-yard pass which wound up on the turf.
    * The other most notable pass play I saw exposed an area that I see as a great concern — depth at free safety. Dominique Barber went for a sideline pick against tight end Tory Humphrey, whiffed and allowed the reception and significant yards after the catch.
    * Trindon Holliday’s had some issues, but looked very comfortable to me fielding punts. His lateral movement and ability to skip and hop into space can be hard to believe. I hope he can earn the role so we can see some of this in a meaningful setting.
    * Joel Dreessen made a great leaping catch of a John David Booty throw in a seam between four defenders, but it probably wasn’t as good as it looked since Chip Vaughn feel down.

I talked with Andre Johnson, Matt Schaub, Steve Slaton as well as Jacoby Jones for a project you’ll see down the road. They’ll practice against this afternoon. Stay tuned for more from Metairie.

During the game this past weekend Holliday seemed to have more trouble judging/catching the kicks and punts than anything else so thats reassuring but we will see how he does in another game situation instead of practice.

So does that mean Kareem wasnt doing very well?

Be nice to see KJ on Colston and see what PK thinks of him during practices. Also want to see if Nolan and Sahrpton get in earlier than before maybe some reps with the 1s. Also like to see how Slaton responds and if he and JJ possibly get switched around some. Maybe this is the week JJ takes over Slaton’s spot.

by JohnBinATX on Aug 18, 2010 10:25 AM CDT reply actions

Hmmm, taking Slaton's spot

JJ should see action and certainly with Tate’s absence, he should get more touches. Slaton needs his touches, too. But, sure, maybe Slaton’s role as 3rd down back will be more of a focus for him and short yardage opportunities will go to others. It would be good to find out how JJ performs in those situations.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Aug 18, 2010 10:36 AM CDT up reply actions

Thinking about our backfield.

The more I think about it, the more I see our backfield of Foster, JJ and Slaton being dynamic. Foster is not a slouch in this system, his junior year at Tennessee they ran a system similar to ours and he tore it up. Not to mention, he has a NFL season under his belt.

JJ’s average per carry in college was sick. All for years he was above 6 yards per carry. Now that he is healthy, I don’t see him slowing down at all. It is going to be an interesting and exciting year.

Looking at the statistics...

the Saints allowed the 4th fewest sacks, were 2nd in first downs per game, were one of two teams to have a top-10 passing and rushing attack, and led the league in total offense and scoring. The Texans won’t see an offense like this unless they meet New Orleans in Jerrah’s world. It’ll help shed some light on the Texans defense for sure.

Wild Boar can be a pain in the ass

There’s tons of methods out there for butchering/preparing the meat and when it’s done right it can be very good. They all require effort though, and I’m lazy. For wild feral pigs/hogs in TX

It seems that the boars have to be in the <100-125 lbs range to have a good flavor, and the sals <150-175 lbs.

It also helps if they are shot in the cold winter, rather than the warmer/hotter times of year.

In other words, if you get into a good herd of 75 lb feral pigs….you hopefully aren’t carrying a bolt-action that day. Because you should be taking home as many as possible for some good eatin’.

And bring the family to my folks’ house….then just wait for dad to figure it out.

On a serious note, I know that we used to process/grind the feral pig meat during dear season so that we could mix it (about 60/40) with sausage-grade venison cuts. My grandmother used to also set some of it aside to make boudin.

/been far too long since I have gotten to do any serious hunting

In case anyone misunderstood, we mixed & re-ground the 60/40 mix to make a venison/pork sausage.

Long term yes, but near term, assuming that Cushing is unavailable for the 1st 4 games, no

Our opening day starting trio may well be Meco – Zac – Darryl. Sharpton was all over the field making plays in Phoenix and the Texans have a history with rookie LB’s playing well (see DeMeco, Cushing, Diles). I was pissed when Smith wasted used the #4 pick on a LB. We didn’t need a LB, or so I thought. This kid is a keeper, and may become our 3rd star LB. The troika of Meco – Cushing – Sharpton looks pretty awesome right now. Add depth with Zac, Clark and Bentley and you have an excellent position group.

It took the Astros 44 years to get to the Series, the Oilers-Texans are due to get to the big dance...Go Texans!!!!!

agree on opening game lineup

Who Cares?

And when he was asked he was told that Schaub initially said it was turning into a rivalry.

The Tits are a rivalry. After we start spanking the Colts this year that will be a rivalry. As of right now we just play the Saints in one preseason game a year and could meet them in the Super Bowl. Not much action to build a rivalry on.

by TexanSchmackDown on Aug 18, 2010 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions

It's the same theory as the Dallas rivalry

Regional rivalry cultivated by an annual pre-season game and regular season game every 4th year. This one gets scrimmages.

Hello texan fans

Hello how is everyopne down in houston I have a few questions for you today about this weekends game
We all know this is preseason and our starters will only play about a quarter so who are your back up players your watching? How are your draft picks developing? and which young players are you hoping will have a big game to save their job?
As far as the Saints go i’m personally watching to see how last years #1 pick Malcolm Jenkins is doing at safety last year he was a CB
I’m also watching Al Woods at DT,and we get a look this week at our new running back Betts and a few young Recievers.
We also get more of a look at Chase Daniel to see how he’s developing and our newest back-up QB Ramsey
This should be a good test for our #1 draft pick CB Patrick Robinson

World Champions at last

by mississippisaintsfan on Aug 18, 2010 6:12 PM CDT reply actions

Secondary, Running Backs, and Kickers

Our secondary is considered a major weak point on this team. We showed our “#1” corner the door after last year and drafted Kareem Jackson in the first round. He couldn’t play last week so we’ll be keeping an eye on how he does. Also FS has been a weakness and we’re looking to see how some of our prospects work out here. The front seven is pretty much dominant and set with the exception of who will replace Cushing the first four games.

Arian Foster is our #1 RB and he has earned the spot. Our #2 is Steve Slaton and he got a bad case of fumbleitis last year and lost another one against Arizona last week. We drafted Ben Tate in the second round and had high hopes for him. However, he blew out his ankle last weekend and is done for the season. This leaves us with one good back, one fumbling back, and 2 prospects (Chris Henry and Jeremiah Johnson). We’ll be looking for Slaton to hold onto the ball and at Henry and JJ to see who will step up into the #3 spot and make the roster.

Kris Brown missed 11 field goals (MOTHER %#&^$*) last year and arguably kept us out of the playoffs. The Texans brought in Neil Rackers to compete against him. We’ll be watching them to see who performs and who chokes.

Our first and second string offense and defense dominated Arizona last week. Arizona won, but all of their points came in the 4th quarter against guys fighting for practice squad positions.

It sounds like the practice today went well for the Texans and I’m looking forward to this weekend.

P.S. Since it’s been brought up… Williams was the right pick. End of story. The stats prove it. If any back should have been drafted top 5 that year it should have been Jones-Drew. Based on his Pro play Bush should have been a 2nd or 3rd round pick up. I’m sorry if Bush still has a stick up his butt about it, but Pollard would be happy to beat it out of him.

by TexanSchmackDown on Aug 18, 2010 7:47 PM CDT up reply actions

How could I forget Holliday!?!?

We drafted Trindon Holliday as a kick returner. The guy is 5’6" 135lbs, but has 4.2 speed. He didn’t exactly impress last week, but wasn’t horrible either. We’re looking for him to work out some rookie jitters, act on the coaching given him, and tear off some huge returns. We tried him out unsuccessfully at WR so if he can’t return kicks like we hope then he won’t have a job come the regular season. If he does make the roster he will be the shortest NFL player ever.

Steve fumbled on the goal line because he hit the line with ONE HAND ON THE BALL. I expected him to get to the sidelines and Kubiak to punch him in the face. This ain’t confusing, folks. Two hands on the ball when banging into a bunch of linebackers.

On the Saints topic, I think this game is the perfect test for us. Last year, the Saints played some very hard hitting football and completely physically dominated us in our preseason game. So the one thing I’m looking to see is whether the Texans can match New Orleans’ force. We’ve had lots of talk about aggression and toughness – Saturday will decipher talk from reality on that score.

Just Once

I want to see the entire d-line fall on the qb. Not just mario, not just antonio but everyone. And at the bottom i would like to see frank okam’s intensity. Wishful thinking on my part. This game is taking too long to get here and its only a preseason one.

Feeling the five stages of grief since 2002.

Any word on the late practice?

The last I heard they were going to have to move it indoors because of rain and that was going to restrict the media access. Any reports of how it went?

Here is the main text from the link someone posted above about the early practice.....

Sounds good overall except for the “second team Texans offene fumble”……hope that wsn’t Slaton.

Observations:
LG Carl Nicks was back with the first-team offense after being demoted to second-team offense during the morning session.
The Saints allowed Texans quarterback Matt Schaub to go 6 of 7 during the two-minute drill, including a third-and-goal four-yard touchdown to TE Joel Dreessen.
Meanwhile, the Saints’ offense stalled at the Texans’ 34-yard line in the two-minute drills.
The Texans practiced in no pads, just helmets; the Saints went in shells (the pads that sit under the shoulder pads and helmets).
Team 1 (Texans first-team O vs. Saints first-team D):
First-and-10: QB Matt Schaub runs left end
First-and-10: RB Arian Fost takes left end for 6-8 yards
First-and-10: RB Steve Slaton goes off right tackle for 2-3 yards
First-and-10: Schaub play-action pass to Dreesse for 20-plus yards. The play-action fake completely fooled the Saints’ defense.
Other – The Saints’ forced a fumble by the second-team Texans’ offense and recovered it. Meanwhile, Saints QB Chase Daniel was intercepted by Houston LB Kevin Bentley.
Two-minute drill:
(Saints O vs. Texans D)
First-and-10 @ NO 40 (1:38): Brees to WR Marques Colston for 15 yards
First-and-10 @ HOU 45: Brees throws to WR Devery Henderson, who stopped on his route and couldn’t catch up to the ball
Second-and-10 @ 45 (1:15): Brees throws to RB Reggie Bush for five yards
Third-and-five @ 40: Brees to TE Jeremy Shockey for four yards
Fourth-and-one @ 36: [NO timeout :55] Brees pump fakes, throws pass that’s knocked down by Houston DE Antonio Smith
(Texans O vs. Saints D)
First-and-10 @ HOU 40 (1:38): Schaub complete for 23 yards
First-and-10 @ NO 37: Schaub to WR David Anderson for 16 yards in front of Saints CB Tracy Porter
First-and-10 @ 21: Schaub intended for WR Kevin Walter short, flag – defensive penalty
First-and-10 @ 19: Schaub to Dreessen for eight yards
Second-and-two @ 11 [NO TO :48]: Schaub to Anderson for eight yards
First-and-goal @ 3 (:28): Schaub throws to Foster left, FS Malcolm Jenkins good read, loss of 1-yard
Second-and-goal @ 4 (:22): Schaub has tons of time, rolls to his left, throws to Dreessen, who is open in back of end zone streaking right to left in front of LB Jonathan Vilma. Houston TD.
Other: QB Patrick Ramsey was intercepted on the Saints’ second-team offense’s second play by Houston LB Darryl Sharpton. The pass was intended for TE David Thomas.

Chris Henry won't make the roster

..hopefully. We’ll scoop up Ryan Torain from the Redskins or LenWhale from the Broncos towards the end of camp.

by leacheatsbabies on Aug 19, 2010 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions

What makes you think these guys are better than Henry?

I just really don’t see the appeal. We lose one of the five backs in training camp and people are digging up replacements left and right?

by riversmccown on Aug 19, 2010 10:11 AM CDT up reply actions

well I fully expected it to be Foster, Tate, Slaton

with the 4th stringer being whoever had the best showing in preseason. So now that its Foster, Slaton, JJ/Henry and Henry has shown he’s an egg short of an omelet and can’t run gametime..i figure Torain has more upside and Lenwhale has atleast ran well at this level. Seems logical right?

by leacheatsbabies on Aug 19, 2010 10:18 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm all for a Foster/Slaton/JJ backfield

Pass on the whale. I’m not sold on Torain. Plus with the aging backfield Shanny is dealing with I’m not so certain he releases Torain.

I am Sancho

by HoustonTransplant on Aug 19, 2010 10:28 AM CDT up reply actions

I'd be okay with trying to stash Torain

If he becomes a FA. But otherwise, who cares? He’s nothing special.

As far as LenWhale, I feel like we need a blog intervention on this one. He’s a bad character guy, which is murder on anyone’s chances of joining the Texans. He’s a bad fit for the ZBS, and he has no versatility as a back (i.e. can’t catch)

Now of course, he is a big guy, and Texans fans blindly want that “big guy” because they want a reliable goal line back, but the ZBS just doesn’t encourage that kind of smashmouth football. This is never going to happen.

by riversmccown on Aug 19, 2010 11:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Its not so much about lenwhale, etc.

but I feel like we should be looking hard. Does it trouble you in the slightest that we have our undrafted RB1 (who has undoubtedly looked good in all his appearances) who has had injury and fumbling issues in college, is backed up by a guy who couldn’t run a lick last year, fumbled 7 times AND had a cervical fusion in the offseason…backed up by another undrafted RB who was injured all of last season…ALLL backed up by Chris Henry..who has looked downright bad in every meaningful snap he’s been given.

It troubles me for sure.

by leacheatsbabies on Aug 19, 2010 11:17 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm fairly comfortable with it

I mean, of course you’d rather have a Chris Johnson or whathaveyou.

But most teams don’t have that luxury, and I think we’re pretty good depth-wise for a team that just lost a second round RB.

the fundamental flaw in a texans fan's philosophy..

i too feel optimistic about the backfield..on what merits i don’t really know.

by leacheatsbabies on Aug 19, 2010 11:27 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't know Rivers

That was a pretty good argument that you summarily dismissed by saying, “What do you want, Chris Johnson?” I’ll have to remember that line for use on all my future discussions about Texans’ RBs……

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

“Texans fans blindly want that "big guy" "

Of course they do! Oh wait, you aren’t talking about DTs….

by killtacular on Aug 21, 2010 4:13 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm with you rivers, as unfortunate as the premature exit of Ben Tate was

it just eliminated one roster decision for Smithiak. One of the 5 RB’s was either going to be cut or put on the PS. Now it’s simple, we just keep all four. Sure the group is far from perfect, but what I really like is the collective youth. Nothing like another pair of fresh legs to call on in a pinch. Have we not been already burned enough by retread RB’s? I hope we do not pick up another RB and that the group keeps progressing. Henry has fantastic physical tools, if not the experience to have learned how best to use them. Johnson looked excellent on Saturday. We’ve all seen the best and worst of Stevie. Foster hasn’t disappointed yet. Thats’s a decent foursome to take into battle.

It's funny how the writer's on here

want to just say no to anymore free agent talk after they piled on and got behind the Aaron Schobel talk and that ran into a dead end. Am I wrong on that observation?

by Rip Jersey on Aug 19, 2010 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree. That Schoebel thing was a full go for many and then abruptly ended

I do think that the Texans have reached a point where there aren’t many, if any, FA’s that are or will become available after the final cuts that would be upgrades for us. That was never true in the past, see the huge Pollard signing mid 2009 season, and speaks volumes about how far we have come in the 4+ years Smithiak have been at the helm. We have decent depth across the board (almost). I would like a better QB2, and a solid G/C would be nice too. Oh yeah and maybe a DT if Mitchell stays in the steep portion of the learning curve as he looked to be in Phoenix.

As far as Schoebel, I’m not sure he would have been a good addition even at minimal salary, which apparently wasn’t possible because reports were that he wanted to get PAID. Barwin is set to excel this year and Schoebel’s addition may have just retarded his growth.

Commissioner Goodell found no basis for changing Brian Cushing’s suspension. Four game suspension remains in place.

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Aug 19, 2010 11:11 AM CDT reply actions

This is exactly...

The way the league needed to handle the suspension and the new “evidence”. There was very little chance the suspension would be overturned by Goodell considering the Pandora’s Box it would open for future positive tests. I do think this fiasco points to a very, very serious need for the league to review their policies and bring in qualified experts to help them draft accurate and usable addendums.

“Clark also got some reps with the first-team defense with Cushing out, and he picked off Saints quarterback Drew Brees over the middle during team periods. A few plays later, Clark stuffed running back Pierre Thomas at the line of scrimmage.”
^ stuck out to me – guess Clark doesnt like all the praise being thrown at sharpton. may the best man win! love that we actually have capable backups who can compete will cushing is out.
