Texans' Training Camp Open Thread - Day 4

I've got a crazy busy day, so y'all are on your own.  See the Day 3 thread for a list of tweeters to follow.  Today is the first day in full pads, so that'll be fun.  Just please, Pollard: they're on your team, so try not to hurt anybody.

Collection

of the best tweets thus far this morning:

John Harris

Full pads!! Players hate it, fans love it. Well, players love it for 2 minutes then it gets waaayy old.

A. Caldwell needs to do better job staying on first contact. Better feet needed

X. Adibi reading inside better than he did in previous years.

Dude, S. McManus hasn’t gotten one rep in 1-on-1. Not one until this morning. He just crushed by boy DA, not once, twice. Damn! To a point where Ieft coaches ohhhing and ahhhing. Wow, need some of that.

Dre just abuses everyone…anothe F. Bennett notch on his belt

I’m worried that all W. Smith is going to be is well paid insurance. Struggling inside.

Best thing Ive seen this morning? Slaton just hittin’ it up inside in 9-on-7. Like good ole day.

Damn, Earl Mitchell is tough as he to block. Pass rush or in zone game. Wins leverage battles. Just stay healthy

F. Okam isn’t K. Jenkins but it’s good to see C. Myers do a decent job not getting thrown by big fat guy

And Troy Nolan will wear you out in the secondary. He’s hit dudes to a point where Im watching something else and I hear him hitting fools

by Mike Kerns on Aug 2, 2010 9:20 AM CDT reply actions

Love these tweets

I have heard from more than one source about Troy Nolan’s hitting. I don’t want to jinx anyone, but we need to keep this guy. If, durga forbid, Wilson goes down, that may be Nolan’s entry into the NFL and he just may step over that threshold and lay the wood down real quick and say, thank you…. I know he doesn’t have elite speed, but everyone says he doesn’t get out of position and he finishes the play. That is what the FS is supposed to do!

Wade Smith. Let’s give him the benefit of the preseason before we designate him as backup. From what I hear, he may be more “unmovable” than the other guys, so against the teams with bigger NTs, that just may come in handy.

Dre….Man!

Steve Slaton is holding up. Wasn’t that our biggest worry about him?

Adibi! for the first four weeks, he may be the man on the spot, keeping it together.

Earl Mitchell. I’m waiting for bfd’s FIRST conciliatory comment on EMFM that, “Maybe, just maybe, I was wrong….” Is there anyone with me on that?

….keep the tweets coming! I love tweets! That means you, Stephanie Stradley! Use both thumbs….

Big Ron
Trindon Holiday is not practicing. Over on the stationarys with Glenn Martinez right now.

Tate breaks a screen from L to R across the field for 6 behind the 2nd OL.

McManis wking solo on field 2 again w/ asst. coach. Looks to be working on change of direction fitness. Had leg inj. issues coming out

Adibi & Mitchell w/ a nice stuff of Tate on inside zone.

Tate just got his 1st snap w/ the 1’s that I’ve seen. Nice run on an outside zone. (No CBs/WRs this period)

Ton of Red Zone work right now from different ydges. Mostly from 5 yd line.

Co-sign " RT @Rgraves04 Once again, Orlovsky holds onto the ball way too long. Receivers didn’t help him, but still.

20 feet from Kubiak. He isn’t entirely pleased with the pace of practice.

Diehard Chris
After catching a pass from Kollar, @ConnorBarwinCo yelled “Automatic!!”

Bernard Pollard is MURDERING the tackle dummies. SO intense.

Pollard is angry this morning. Snarling and growling, literally.

Bulman and Barwin getting chippy with each other. Lots of intensity.

Pollard bitching at Orlovsky from sidelines. Love it.

If they would turn the stupid awful music off I would be able to hear coach Kubes addressing the entire team right now.

Just trotting on the field for a position group huddle, Pollard let out a primal scream.

Well

With Okoye slimming down and getting to his old weight that gives him his quickness back and Mitchell coming in in similar shape, they are motoring just like DEs. In fact, I think they could play DE. Anyways, put whatever combination out there you want, and it’s like four DEs on the field. That is what I meant.

RB Ben Tate caught a screen from Booty on the left side and cut it back right for a 30-yard gain. 1 of the highlights of 11-on-11s

adibi

Adibi should be the fastest of our linebackers he has the raw ability to beat Diles as the starting WILL, however he often misdiagnoses the play and blows gap assignments on running plays allowing cutback lanes and getting caught up in the wash. Diles knows the assignments which is why he gets the nod..

Adibi is slotted in at Cush's SLB spot for the first four games unless Clark can beat him out

Kubiak didn’t want to move Diles because he believes he’s on the verge of being a pro bowl caliber player…those were Kubiaks words. Not Pancake’s. I’m sure MDC loved it, but it’s all just PR sound bites.

I think Clark beats out Adibi at SLB. Adibi would be better on the weakside. I LOVED the Adibi pick and thought he had a chance to be really good. The fact is Diles beat him out last year and deserved the spot.

As much as Kubiak's coachspeak bothers me sometimes

it really wouldn’t be a good idea to say “yeah, we think Zac Diles is garbage, so we’re gonna move him around.”

by Mike Kerns on Aug 2, 2010 10:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

I get annoyed when people bitch about Kubiak and his “this loss is on me” speach, and try to use that as a reason to get rid of him. Sure, I get tired of hearing it, but That’s good coaching. The players love him for trying to take the heat of them. That’s why so many of them talk about how they love to play for Kubiak. He’ll call certain guys out publicly for motivational reasons, but he sees to be selective and calculating about it.

As much as I want to know every single detail about what goes on that’s just not smart for the Texans.

Diles *is* good though...

Adibi’s, at best, the 4th best linebacker on the team.

However, if he looks good in Cushing’s place, maybe he’ll see more PT next season in place of Diles.

by krkenney on Aug 2, 2010 10:57 AM CDT up reply actions

Diles does make mistakes

And he is certainly not irreplaceable. But I don’t think he’s anywhere as bad as some guys here think.

by Mike Kerns on Aug 2, 2010 11:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Of course

… and I’m the loudest supporter of Diles around these parts, but I’ll be the first to admit that going into last season, I had really hoped our starters at LB would be Cushing-Ryans-Adibi.

If Adibi can supplant Diles, it’s a good thing for this team. He can rush the passer and he can cover, something our linebackers are awful at (well, Cushing’s good as a pass-rusher).

I went there this morning, so here's my review:

The Good:

Duane Brown- Looked very solid against Antonio Smith. Every running play, whether it was Smith or someone else, Brown was abusing them.

Andre Johnson- In a league of his own.

Earl Mitchell- Dude has got a serious motor. He’s pretty small, but he constantly gets penetration on run plays. On pass plays it’s the same deal, he collapses the pocket every snap.

Arian Foster- Continues to look great. Runs hard and has great vision.

Ben Tate- Had some pretty nice runs. He will fit in perfectly with our one-cut scheme.

Xavier Adibi- He read the gaps very well, picking good spots to penetrate.

Kareem Jackson- He didn’t do all that much but he wasn’t getting burned by AJ. On a comeback route right when AJ caught it, Kareem was right there. He also had some fairly good plays, but right now anything is improvement for him.

Bernard Pollard- Hitting hard and talking nonstop.

Frank Okam- Getting past his man and creating havoc on the inside most plays. He needs to do this consistently.

The Bad:

Dan Orlovsky- Looked horrific. Held on to the ball way too long and was hesitant.

Matt Schaub- Inaccurate.

Glover Quin- Continues to get burned by AJ. On a comeback route, Quin slipped and fell when AJ turned back.

Amobi Okoye- Getting some penetration, but not finding the ball. Seems like he is only getting past his man for the sake of it.

Wade Smith- I’m beginning to think this guy cannot handle guard.

Jacoby Jones- Dancing wayyyy too much on PRs. He didn’t muff one though.

The music- played Party in the USA, completely unnecessary.

Notables:

- Darryl Sharpton looked pretty good, hitting some holes hard.

- Slaton hit a hole hard and ran well, but there were no WRs.

Overall it was a fun practice to watch. Didn’t get to see Trindon or Super Mario play, but Bernard Pollard always steals the show.

Brown's strength has always been on running plays.

He is improving on his pass rushing technique. Playing against Dwight Freeney two times a year helps you a lot, especially when you go back and look at it on film.

Amobi Okoye and the case of the fluctuating weight

Godwin, this offseason, parrotting McClain’s "he played the year at 315" idea:

. Leading the way was right tackle Amobi Okoye, who lost 32 pounds by conditioning twice a day in Katy with his younger sister during his time off.

McClain’s blog, today (no link, obviously)

Smith, like Okoye, has slimmed down. He played at 295 last season and reported at 282.

Wait, I get it. His weight loss magically changes based on what the Texans FO tells you it was last season!

by riversmccown on Aug 2, 2010 12:23 PM CDT reply actions

what do yall think about schobel coming here?

With Buffalo out of the picture, it’s believed that the Texans would be LB Aaron Schobel’s team of choice if he decides not to retire. Former Bills D-line coach Bill Kollar is in Houston, and the Texans are close to Schobel’s home in Texas.

Don't ask me! Ask Google, you dumb Yahoo!

Which of our corners/tight ends/guards gets cut?

And I’m not talking about Fred Bennett, Derek Fine, or Adam Stenavich. If we put another defensive end on the roster, an actual contributor is going to have have to fall off.

Bulman?

Anyway, I wrote Schobel up on SBNH: http://houston.sbnation.com/2010/8/2/1601201/aaron-schobel-texans-2010-free-agent

TLDR version; Schobel is old. The Texans shy away from old free agents. Ergo, as fun as the match seems, I doubt it’s going to happen.

by riversmccown on Aug 2, 2010 12:44 PM CDT up reply actions

No way they cut Bulman.

The coaches love the guy.

I could see stashing McManis on the PS or IRing Anthony Hill… but I also wonder if the coaches would be okay with not having the usual scrub in the defensive end rotation. It’ll be hard for Kubes, Bush, and Kollar to not drag out Nading, Jamison, or Egboh in crunch time when Williams, Barwin, Smith, and Bulman are tired.

by krkenney on Aug 2, 2010 12:47 PM CDT up reply actions

He's 33

which would go against the Texans Modus Operandi post Green. I would guess he would have to be cheap, and willing to accept whatever role the Texans needed. We know he’s not going to take over for Mario, but he would be good insurance if if the unthinkable happened….but would you really want him taking snaps away from your young pass rusher of the future in Barwin? Could he play the stongside while Smith slides inside? I don’t know enough about where Schoebel’s game is at right now to make any kind of declaration on where he would fit in Houston, but I think age would be the biggest thing holding the Texans back…although as young as the defense is an old vet wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to have around.

33 year old DE?

The only way it could happen is if they dropped Antonio Smith into a 4-man rotation with Okoye, Cody, and Mitchell at DT…..then they have Schobel at LDE, able to flip out for Barwin…….

I don’t think it happens because A) he’s 33 and B) at DE there’s Mario, Antonio, Barwin….things would definitely have to change.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Aug 2, 2010 12:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I dunno

I think it would be a situation where Smith plays DE on rushing downs/base sets, then slides inside on pass downs, just like last year. With Schobel as a pass-rushing DE, for situational purposes only.

TDC, I seem to remember your great 49ers, in their heyday, gobbling up thirtysomething ends like Richard Dent and Chris Doleman. I believe they even used an aging Ricky Jackson at DE. And we’re talking about some great Niner defensive units that they helped…

by Cut Block on Aug 2, 2010 9:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh no doubt

but now that it’s trade-only do you A) Trade a draft pick for him? B) Potentially Stunt Connor Barwin’s growth for him if you don’t put Smith at DT which may mess up Smith?

It just seems unlikely even though the Niners did it in the 80s…..the Giants did it recently…..

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Aug 2, 2010 9:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh, I agree it’s unlikely. Then again, if it makes any sense…

Personally, spending a low round pick (or two) sounds OK to me. Buffalo already stated they’re moving on without him, so it’s not as if they’ll demand a first rounder.

And a DL-line comitee is something that all winning teams do nowadays. We can’t turn up our noses at adding pieces to the puzzle, there. We barely have a starting shift, let alone some depth.

by riversmccown on Aug 3, 2010 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions

It's simple

IF Schoebel says he will only play for Texans and the Texans say were not giving you anything then all Schobel has to do is say well I guess I’m going to report to camp. He probably doesn’t want to do that, but he would likely never have to unless the Bills decide to be pricks.

I would PISSED if we did give anything for him in this situation….other than maybe whatever DE e have on the roster that will likely get cut to make room for him.

It would depend on his coverage skills. OLBs need to be much better in coverage in the 4-3 set, then they would need to be in a 3-4.

I want to say that he was strictly a DE for Buffalo early in his career. Weren’t they running a 4-3 at that point? Anyone have the facts? Buffalo Rumblings?

by Cut Block on Aug 2, 2010 9:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Judging on the fact that he wants out of Buffalo becasue the are moving from the 4-3 to the 3-4

I don’t think he is considered a good linebacker at all. He would want to be back at a 4-3 DE position.

Ok, I did the research, and saw that Buffalo was running a 4-3 as late as last season :/

And Schobel was always a DE. Seems I had my facts skewed.

True… the chances are almost impossible, that we’d switch him over to OLB. It was a good question, though. We’ll need a SLB. Starting in Week 2 haha

Johnson received his turn with the starters, but it’s likely that Williams and Mays will be back in their normal places today. The Chiefs appear more comfortable with Johnson as a situational player, entering the game when the opponent is in an obvious passing situation

It worked with Pollard. We do have a hole at LB early. He is still pretty young and has a good pedigree.

No clue if he makes the team this year but you have to note two things.

1. He has sweet hair.
2. He played really well when I saw him Friday with no pads. Then today he made a sweet grab on a jump ball and caught a pass just before it hit the ground then rolled in for a TD.

Practice Squad

Dorin Dickerson’s making a case for the active roster. Holliday might actually force himself there to, meaning Davis is gone… but they’re not gonna carry 7 WRs.

by krkenney on Aug 2, 2010 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Dickerson

wouldn’t clear waivers to make the practice squad. Someone would pick him up. Martinez or Davis is more likely to be gone, IMO.

by Mike Kerns on Aug 2, 2010 1:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Martinez AND Davis are gone, IMO.

Our WRs look like they’ll be AJ, K-Dub, Jacoby, DA, Dickerson, and Holliday.

by krkenney on Aug 2, 2010 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Me neither, but TC reports changed my mind a little.

I had originally thought, with the way Holliday was not adjusting to the WR position and Kubiak’s obvious disdain for return specialists, that Holliday stood no chance, but after hearing the praise for him, I think it might work.

This way the team kills two birds with one stone: they don’t risk injury (or energy) to a contributor on offense and dump Davis’ asinine contract.

As far as the topic at hand (Dickerson), from the sound of it, Dickerson and Kareem are improving day by day. I think Dickerson might even see the field in vital situations by the end of the season.

by krkenney on Aug 2, 2010 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Dickerson in the red zone....

Wouldn’t be surprised if that’s his early offensive package along with his special team duties.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Aug 2, 2010 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know

I heard on the radio that when Kubiak was asked how Holliday looked at WR Kubiak’s response was “not good”. I don’t have a source for that, and their might have been more to his response, but that doesn’t sound like he’s nailing down a roster spot to me.

With only six WR’s Holiday would be an injury or two away from being forced on the field as a WR at least a little. If he really is that far behind the curve it’s going to be a tough decision. I think they find a way to keep him around though.

"Well, at least our players kept their helmets on, so that showed some intelligence"-Bob McNair

by papabear on Aug 2, 2010 1:55 PM CDT up reply actions

No matter how he performs as a receiver....

if he goes into pre-season games and lights it up then he’s in. However, he’d make it easier if he picked up the receiver role…would be dangerous in the slot with his speed if he learned how to use it.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Aug 2, 2010 1:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I just don't think that's the case

It’s a numbers thing. He’s going to have show SOMETHING as a WR IMO.

"Well, at least our players kept their helmets on, so that showed some intelligence"-Bob McNair

by papabear on Aug 2, 2010 1:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I think it depends....

Ideally, I believe Davis and Martinez are swapped for Dickerson and Holliday. Dickerson takes the 5th WR role of Davis along with Martinez’s special teams duties while Holliday handles the returns that Davis used to. Martinez rarely saw the field as a receiver, so I think he’d be fine…while also still learning the receiver role just in case.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Aug 2, 2010 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Martinez rarely saw the field last year

…but we were abnormally healthy at that position last year. That likely won’t continue. I’m not saying Holiday has to be impressive at WR…just that he has to do enough to make Kubiak believe he can be serviceable in a tight spot.

"Well, at least our players kept their helmets on, so that showed some intelligence"-Bob McNair

by papabear on Aug 2, 2010 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Part of the problem for Holliday

is not just the WR, but also the TE and RB spots. With the battles going on there, the Texans have a bit of a glut at the skill positions. They may not have the flexibility to take on a project WR.

by Vega on Aug 2, 2010 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed. That's also my concern for the addition of Schobel.

If you want Schobel, you’re going to have to cut a guy that was going to make the roster. We’re not talking Bennett, Egboh, Nading, Jamison, or Derek Fine. Those guys are already likely gone.

One chance to carry a returner would be if we didn’t carry a long snapper, but Kubes has been hesitant to rely on a guy who might get hurt playing his normal position and being stuck without an experienced long snapper in a game.

With Casey and Graham looking comfortable and Hill likely going straight to IR,

… Dreessen should be the LS. He brings the least to the table as a receiver.

by krkenney on Aug 2, 2010 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions

That doesn't change my point

Dreesen brings the least to the passing game, but is probably a better blocker than Casey or Graham at this point. Here’s a scenario; We’re driving for a TD to tie or win the game in the last minute. Balls inside the five. Dreesen is sent in because of his blocking in a two TE or goal line package. Gets his hand stepped on, broken, whatever at the bottom of the pile…but we score and need the PAT for the win. Now you have to scramble to get your back up LS in the game. LS seems simple enough, but it takes some skill to do well and you want it want it done the exact same way every time so the kicker and holder are in perfect rhythm.

For the record….I’ve never been a fan of carrying a LS because roster spots are so valuable, but I understand why so many teams do it so I’m playing devils advocate a little bit here.

I think/hope Hollidays speed will prove to be too much to pass on

If he can prove to significantly improve our return game with almost zero mistakes, then I believe Kubes will take a chance on him for a roster spot. I hope we do because he was one of the more “exciting” draft picks for this team and I would love to see him pan out. I have been in awe of this kid his entire college career. We arent talkin fast for a football player… we are talkin fast for a human. This kid can absolutely fly and I have already heard reports of him simply beating everyone to the outside on special teams, which is exactly what you want from a return specialist.

Assuming a reverse

If Holliday has the ball for the first leg of the reverse, does his speed mean that the defense has to overcommit, leaving huge space for the reverse, or does his speed mean that when the second player gets the ball all of the defenders are where they started because they haven’t had time to chase after him?

by Tailgate Andy on Aug 2, 2010 3:30 PM CDT up reply actions

NIce one Mike

But, if I was planning the reverse, I would run a toss or sweep with the RB and hand off to Holliday on the Reverse. So it would depend more on the Slaton/Foster/Tate height compared to Holliday’s.

Texans WR’s accounted for 9 rushes in 2009, with a total of 48 yards. That isn’t a heap of attempts, but is a good yards per attempt number. Imagine how it would work with that speed!

The Texans’ kicking competition between Kris Brown and Neil Rackers began today in front of the team. Brown: 5-of-6. Rackers: 6-of-6. Brown’s miss was close, hooked just left and maybe a bit short from 43 yards. Texans coach Gary Kubiak was impressed w/ both kickers today.
