Around SBN: Yankees Deny Rumors That Team Is For Sale

Following up on an earlier story, Adam Schefter is reporting that Aaron Schobel will in fact be released after Buffalo Bills GM Buddy Nix stated that he wouldn't simply be let go on Monday. It will be interesting to see what happens with Schobel next, although no matter where he ends up he may not sign right away in an attempt to miss some training camp time.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

Honestly

Let him come here for a huge discount. Oh no we have another guy who gets a lot of sacks on crappy teams. The humanity.

That's just crazy talk

WHAT IF HE MISSES PART OF TRAINING CAMP!?!?!?!?

FOOTBALL PLAYERS FORGET HOW TO PLAY FOOTBALL OVER THE OFFSEASON

AND HOW WILL HE LEARN FRANK BUSH’S INCREDIBLY COMPLEX BLITZ PACKAGES?!?!? THAT COULD TAKE HOURS!

You forget, he will have it written into his contract that he does not play LB

They call that the Haynesworth Clause….

Which reminds me, see how he did no offseason conditioning

will Kubiak make him take the 300-yard shuttle test?

Im convinced he would come here for a discount

even if not, I don’t mind. All I know iw I want this guy on my team!

I agree

Everything he has said makes me think he wants to be in Houston if he is playing football, money isn’t the issue.

Anyone know what the league minimum for a veteran of 9/10 years? Does it matter without the CBA?

like how you added

“In an attempt to miss training camp time.”

Let’s see. He is a self-admitted slacker. He has lost a step. He hasn’t trained in 8 months. He will be taking snaps away from Barwin. IMO, he won’t be the difference of plaoffs or not, but he may not be a good influence.

10 sacks last year. Thats more than Super Mario put up. And you don’t want him on the Texans?!?!?!

by battlered90 on Aug 4, 2010 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions

He said it himself...try to catch up

Go find the link to where he was interviews and stated all I said in the previous post….

If he's better than Barwin

Don’t we want him to be “stealing snaps” so to speak? I thought we wanted our team to get better not just draft picks. And when the hell has he been “not a good influence”? The other 9 years he played in Buffalo and rarely said anything about how terrible they were/are/going to be?

by b0ng on Aug 4, 2010 6:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Per Schefter's twatting:

“It’s official: Bills have released two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Aaron Schobel.”

At least make a call, Rick.

by DisplacedTexan on Aug 4, 2010 2:10 PM CDT reply actions

I'm indifferent

If he played DT I wouldn’t be, but it’s not our ends that frighten me. He might be able to help, and if he’s willing to play for a palatable price, sure. But whatever.

by JimboTexan on Aug 4, 2010 2:16 PM CDT reply actions

I'd like him

But I’m always for more competition on the team.

That said, the overall feeling of “meh” if we don’t get him fits well with me.

by riversmccown on Aug 4, 2010 3:06 PM CDT up reply actions

If we do sign (which I hope we do real soon)

this should mean great things for our line…a very good defensive end…he could also move Smith to the middle with Okoye on several plays…sure it takes away from Mitchell and Connor, but we could use a player like him on the line with Mario

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Aug 4, 2010 2:20 PM CDT reply actions

Not many FA's name the Texans as their primary choice...

Even if they think he’d only be a situational player I think they should pick him up… He’d be a great teacher to Barwin and Mario, seeing that we have no real veteran presence on the Dline

Not picking him up might send the wrong message to future potential free agents.

I think there will be more vets over the next few years

The Texans are a classy, well run and well respected outfit these days.

Ya know what really grinds my gears?

That Schobel keeps being referred to as a LB in media reports.

But he has played nine seasons at DE.

Because the Buffalo Bills have switched to the 3-4, they changed his designation from DE to LB for their depth chart.

I don’t believe he has ever played a down at Linebacker. Please correct me if I am wrong.

We could use a veteran LB presence! Let's pick him up!

by Rip Jersey on Aug 4, 2010 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Well...

A&M’s own website apparently referred to Aaron Glenn as a DE instead of a DB.

Maybe it’s the new cool thing to do.

If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?

by Shake on Aug 4, 2010 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

No correction needed. Although he has dropped into coverage in some zone blitz looks from DE, and had a sweet pick-six in the season opener last year on Tom Brady (MNF).

by Brian Galliford on Aug 5, 2010 5:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Is this a reasonable question?

How many DEs are 33 or over in this league? Anyway to know? Just seems like the Texans are reaching for this guy if they pick him up. I don’t think he will be a good influence and I don’t necessarily think he would be better than Connor Barwin at this point, and that being said, I don’t want him to take snaps from Barwin. Barwin has too much promise and he needs the snaps. I see him coming on strong right from the first game, so more Barwin, please!

Here is last year's list

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/play-index/psl_finder.cgi?request=1&match=single&year_min=2009&year_max=2009&season_start=1&season_end=-1&age_min=33&age_max=99&league_id=&team_id=&is_active=&is_hof=&pos_is_de=Y&c1stat=gs&c1comp=gt&c1val=2&c2stat=tackles_solo&c2comp=gt&c2val=1&c3stat=&c3comp=gt&c3val=&c4stat=&c4comp=gt&c4val=&order_by=tackles_solo

Of course, PFR isn’t great with who is a 3-4 OLB and a 4-3 DE yet, so it was probably a little more than that. For instance, Jason Taylor has been a DE for most of his career.

At any rate, most of the guys who did well had a track record of playing well, so as long as he hasn’t lost anything off last season, he should be a positive addition.

by riversmccown on Aug 4, 2010 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes, coud've taken a little more than 12 minutes to get that info and reply

For the record, still not behind him coming here. Although it appears that it may happen, then we’ll get to see. WTH, Zgonina played meaningful minutes last season and Schobel is on paper a much superior player….

I don't see why not

Sign him at a discount and lets the coaches figure out who plays..

Theres no risk here unless he’s asking for too much money..in which case we all know Rick Smith won’t be calling.

by leacheatsbabies on Aug 4, 2010 6:49 PM CDT reply actions

in more blatant terms of approval..

since when do we NOT need help with our pass rush?

10 1/2 sacks on a horrible team means the guy has atleast somewhat of a nose for the QB. We can’t afford not to try him.

Brett Favre should be the discussion on every blog,

so all of this is irrelevant.

The Texans are also interested in DE Aaron Schobel. He told the Chronicle Monday night the Texans are at the top of his list. Schobel, who resides an hour from Houston, wants to be reunited with Bill Kollar, the Texans D line coach who coached him in Buffalo.

by Mike Kerns on Aug 4, 2010 11:22 PM CDT reply actions

Kubes on Schobel (via NFP)
"He’s a heck of a player, obviously," Kubiak said today in remarks distributed by the team. "I’ve followed him for a lot of years and being a local guy, you know him around town here. But we are going to do our homework on him like we do on every player. He’s a fine football player. We’ll do our homework just like every other team and see what happens."

Defensive line coach Bill Kollar speaks highly of Schobel and has coached him before.

“He has obviously coached him and thinks a lot of him as a player,” Kubiak said. "That’s part of this league, players are released and with stuff going on around you just sit there and usually one of us have a relationship with somebody. So from that standpoint, Bill speaks very highly of him."
