As promised, this here thread is for Texans fans to post their observations, queries, and/or conspiracy theories as our beloved squad completes the seventh day of training camp in front of a packed house. If you're in attendance, tell us what you're seeing and what you think. If you're not in attendance, tell us what you're wearing thinking, too.

so i was into the reserved area due to a hook up with a turk family friend

pretty sweet there. watched front row my texans warm up. was 2 feet away watching the Lineman practice with their little fake guy trying to block them…lose atmosphere with players joking around. After awhile I needed to stretch my legs. I saw my friends shagging balls with rackers by the 3rd field. Went over there, met Niel Rackers (cool guy). My friends were trying to catch his field goals but failed (they claimed it was very tough). After a while it was over…I went to meet players. Told Cushing I’m a twitter follower. Tried to get Holliday’s headband (fail), tried to get casey’s gloves (fail)…got a pic with arian foster and told him he is my fantasy sleeper. Talked with Okam. Shook hands with other players. Fun Night

Coach Gary Kubiak reiterated that Kevin Walter and Jacoby Jones are going “head-to-head” for the No. 2 starting job in camp.
“Kevin’s the starter; he’s earned that right,” said Kubiak. [But] we’ve got a heck of a player (Jones) pushing to be a starter in this league. We’re putting them right down the middle. It’s very competitive." It’s one of the most important fantasy battles in the league this summer. If Jones can push Walter into the slot, he’s among the best breakout candidates going.

I'll believe it when I see it.

I love Jacoby, but I don’t think he’s ever going to be a full-time starter until he becomes more consistent with his hands. He’s a ton of talent and a valuable asset… but on 3rd and long I trust Kevin Walter or David Anderson (and Andre should go without saying) before I do Jones. Maybe he’ll prove me wrong this season.

Not even part of the conversation, Dorin Dickerson

He is capable of beating them both out….in time. The players has the talent, tools and ability. He just needs time.

by Rip Jersey on Aug 6, 2010 7:17 AM CDT up reply actions

I think Dickerson has a ton of talent

…but I think it’s way too early to include him in a conversation about the competition for #2 WR.

There was a play coming right at me last night

Dickerson was running a quick slant out straight from the QB with McCain coming in quick. I think it was Orlovsky QBing. He threw a hard pass on the money. Dickerson turned his upper body in full stride and snagged it as McCain was putting an arm across his shoulders. It was a bang-bang play. If this was the real thing, in pads, I’m still not sure McCain could have tackled him because Dickerson has some strength and size and an arm high probably is not the way to take him down. He impressed my with his natural ability to do all he did at full speed without losing any speed.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Aug 6, 2010 8:52 AM CDT up reply actions

I think Jacoby can be a full time starter

I’m not sure if he’s ready yet, but he has shown a ton of development since his first year here. If Kubiak is right and that suspension last year finally woke him up and he has maured…watch out because Jacoby has the physical tools.

As for who the starter is….it really doesn’t matter. We run enough three wide sets and rotate WR’s enough that it really doesn’t matter who starts. They will both get plenty of chances. I think though that Kubiak is trying to dangle a carrot in font of Jacoby to keep him focused. Walter is a highly undervalued/underrated WR. We’re lucky to have what I think is the best WR corps top to bottom(especially at the Top) in the NFL.

Abso-freakin-lutely

The word “starter” is a horrible term. It’s not like baseball or basketball where you have a group that starts and then gets subbed for later. JJ will “start” a bunch of games if our first play involves a 3 wide set. He’ll also get on the field a bunch in 2 wide sets.

Even though our running game should be much improved, we’ll still be chucking the ball a lot and there will be plenty of balls for AJ, Walter, JJ, and all fifteen tight ends.

Owner Bob McNair acknowledged Thursday that the Texans are interested in signing free agent Aaron Schobel.
“[GM] Rick [Smith] is talking with our coaches, and they’re evaluating things and trying to determine exactly what role a player like Aaron would fill,” McNair said. “We all respect him.” Schobel still has plenty left in the tank, but talented second-year player Connor Barwin will end up being blocked by geography, sentiment, and cronyism here.

The CHRONICLE is finally acknowledging that unbelievable level of cronyism involved in every decision Kubes makes?

I must be dreaming…

That said, I’m now of the opinion “Screw Connor Barwin’s development if this helps the pass rush (and the team) get over the hump.” If Schobel “still has plenty left in the tank” then the coaching staff has no excuse in not signing him.

Schoebel wouldn't be a fit at Smith's spot

He’s a pass rusher. He has never been a strong side DE. He would likely only play on passing downs for us….unless Mario played strongside and Smith went down to DT. Even then I think they like having Mario and Smith’s size at DE on first and second down to help stop the running game.

How about both Mario and Antonio going inside on 3rd and long

with Barwin and Schoebel on the outside. That could work. Regardless though, if Scoebel is added, he will be a situational pass rushing DE only. He’s not big enough to play the run consistently well.

wouldn’t have to be a “screw Conners development”. I think it would help more than anything. What better way for CB to develop than by learning his chops from a seasoned vet.

by Salad on Aug 6, 2010 12:58 AM CDT up reply actions

The good news?

That would be the only potential good news other than the fact Schobel intends to play just one more year. Schobel is a loafer in practice. So, how much is Barwin going to learn? He can watch film of the guy from his games in Buffalo if he needs to watch him. Barwin needs to play.

You act like there's not cronyism all over the NFL

Look at any team with a new coach/staff. The first thing they do is bring in their own guys. Look how often players at the end of their career go play for their favorite coach from earlier in the year. It’s a very small circle of people in the NFL, so it’s natural that a lot of hires/pick-ups have connections. On top of that NFL coaches are under such a microscope that they don’t ever want to make a decision without having some type of insider perspective from a colleague.

"Well, at least our players kept their helmets on, so that showed some intelligence"-Bob McNair

by papabear on Aug 6, 2010 8:22 AM CDT up reply actions

I know there is, but I feel like Kubiak and Smith take it to unprecedented levels.

I’m fairly certain that in Kubiak’s first two years, we scooped up every former Seahawk (Holmgren), Packer (Sherman), or Bronco (Shanahan) on the market. We hire coaches based on how good of friends Kubiak is with him, not how good a coach he is (see: Frank Bush over Gregg Williams), and we’ve had more Colorado State (the college that plays two of Kubiak’s three sons) players over Kubiak’s tenure than any other university out there. You can’t tell me Colorado State players bring a lot to the table. It says a lot that I was able to correctly predict the drafting of Shelley Smith and the signing of Cole Pemberton.

but I really want to DOUBLE rec it for calling out the word “swagger”. I effing loathe that word.

by WhiskeyR on Aug 6, 2010 10:58 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Irregardless

I hate when people use that word. On another note I think papbear is correct. I’m sure there is a certain…all I can think of is “comfort level” from hiring within a pedigree or coaching system. Definitely when you’ve worked with the coach/personnel before. I suppose I can’t speak in certainties, but if my job were on the line, I’d want personnel I was familiar with. I’d know their strengths and weaknesses and be able to work with that.

As far as players go, that’s a little more tricky. I think Smith and Pemberton are reasonable pick ups. Smith is decent. Pemberton is huge, not the greatest footwork for a tackle, but he could be moved inside.

by RenoTexans on Aug 6, 2010 12:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I believe you're making this more difficult than it needs to be.

Picking someone who knows your system simply because he knows your system when there are better or otherwise more talented options out there is always a bad idea. How good a school is Colorado State, again? And why do we keep bringing in their players, season after season, if not for any other reason than Kubiak paying the school a favor for playing his kids?

It’s one thing when your cronyism leads to hiring Ray Rhodes or Alex Gibbs—they’re some of the best at what they did that the game has ever seen. It’s another thing entirely when you’re giving significant playing time to Mike Brisiel (who people seem quick to forget was by far the worst part of our offensive line when he started) or Joel Dreessen simply because they played ball at the same school your kids go to. The likelihood that Ahman Green was going to turn it around and have an all-pro season here after sharply declining was about as certain as Rich Rodriguez lighting the Big Ten on fire at Michigan. As much as I love Duane Brown, the guy was a 2nd-round pick at best (who we took in the first round simply because he fits the system), and I firmly believe that the Rick Smith shot himself in the foot by getting cute with trading back, thinking he’d land Mike Jenkins. The team is going to have a lot of explaining to do if Devin McCourty, Kyle Wilson, and Patrick Robinson blow things and getting burned by Andre Johnson is a preview of how Jackson’s going to play this season. And I’ll go ahead and point out that we had the opportunity to sign Gregg Williams and picked Frank Bush instead, again.

Sorry, cronyism might not always be a bad thing, but it’s not exactly been the best thing for this team. Go out and draft and sign and hire talent instead of picking up low-grade free agents/draft picks simply because Kubiak played with their dad (I’m looking at you, Kasey Studdard).

by krkenney on Aug 6, 2010 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree papabear, my pet peeves are recent explosion of the use of scuffle instead of struggle

and “at the end of the day”.

What industry does not show favoritism in hiring practices, with familiarity and previous positive experiences be overwhelmingly dominant factors? It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. That is how the world runs, and it always will be that way.
