Texans' Training Camp Open Thread--August 9th

In response to the great turnout your Houston Texans have had to their open/free practice sessions, this morning's practice has been made open to the public as well. Are you there? Simply thinking about football as the work week starts? Either way, sound off in the Comments.

Even if it is a sports hernia

Recovery time from surgery should be about 4-6 weeks.

At least, that’s what Lance Z said at the end of his show this morning.

If he needs the procedure, might as well do it now so he’ll be at full strength for the part of the season he plays.

I'm not at the practice, but...

the pre-season news so far has not been good.

Mario hurt… (injured?)
CBs still young/raw
RB a question mark
FO thinks the Texans will suck

… and they haven’t even played a game yet. I have nothing funny or witty to offer, just monday morning depression. Or its equivalent.

by grungedave on Aug 9, 2010 10:04 AM CDT reply actions

I think the RB's has been mostly positive

Steve looks like his old self. Foster looks good. Tate’s had hammy issues, but I’ve heard positive reports on how he’s looked when he’s gotten out there for the most part.

CB’s…nothing has happened to lessen my worry about that area.

I love FO, but I’m not too concerned with their projection.

Injuries. It depends on how serious Mario’s issue is…otherwise we are in much better shape than teams like Bltimore and Denver. Both of them have already lost starters for the year. Right now our most serious injury is Adibi (pending Mario’s doctor visit of course).

by papabear on Aug 9, 2010 10:21 AM CDT up reply actions

papabear, thank you

Yes, RB, no worries, they’ll be fine at worst, excellent at best. If Tate is gimpy, keep your eyes on Chris Henry. The guy is making an effort to make this team.

CBs, they just need a preseason to round out into a unit that can get by. By midseason, they will be rolling. By the end of the season, they will be leading the defense….optimistic, I know.

Mario can play on one leg and still be All-Pro….

Adibi, groin? That will hamper him if it is serious. His game is movement and a groin will slow him. The team does have depth, but they really could use him in weeks 1-4. Sharpton may surprise though if pushed into service.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

Football outsiders

They use game charting and statistical analysis. Lots of good info…but they are projecting the Texans for something like 6 wins this year. Mainly based on schedule and the fact that the Texans were abnormally healthy at key positions last year.

by papabear on Aug 9, 2010 10:57 AM CDT up reply actions

Owen Daniels pretty much broke our season with his injury.

Bud Norris hit A-Rod's 600th homerun.

by RocketsAstros on Aug 9, 2010 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions

FO considers Schaub injury prone and not likely to last all 16 games again

OD was big, but we got OK production from our other TE’s once he went down+increased production from guys like Jones and Anderson . We had some injuries on the offensive line, but we’re able to trot out the same starting lineup more often than the average.

Defensively, the only major injury we had was Wilson. I can’t think of any other starters who missed significant time.

So on the whole we were pretty healthy last year…although we had a lot of players banged up they didn’t miss much time.

by papabear on Aug 9, 2010 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Ahh

Fuck a bunch of Fo bastards. They also said we were going to the playoffs last year and that Bret Farve was gonna retire. And the Bills were going to be good…..And two or three years ago that J-ville was going to be good. You can analyze all you want from a distance, but it comes down to 4 quarters on a Sunday. I am betting they think we can’t close and I am betting we will. 10-6 with a Playoff spot.

Oh yeah, did I mention Fuck a bunch of Fo’s?

It takes a big man to walk away, but a bigger man to break his freaking jaw!

by USMC_Texas on Aug 9, 2010 11:20 AM CDT up reply actions

They have their uses

I think they are better at certain things than they are at others. Their projections for teams are one of their weaker areas. There is just too many variables for them to try an account for. They are betting on Schaub getting injured. That’s a concern for Texans fans, but it’s not something you can really account for. Another big part of their projection is schedule. It SHOULD be a tough schedule, but you never really know until the year is over what a tough schedule is. There is also the issue of catching teams at the right time. i.e. when they have starters out with injury or something like that.

I think they are a good reference to dispel myths like “Dunta didn’t have many interceptions because teams were scared to throw at him”. You can open up their charts and see that Dunta was actually targeted more than the rookie Glover Quin and tell them to STFU. My point is there is usefull information, but it is not the final word and everything needs to be taken in context of the big picture.

Cheer up

Except Mario and FO, these were all known’s at the end of last season.

We have a few “Hitters” on our D in Cushing, Demeco, Pollard. All relatively young. A few rookies with flashes of promise in Earl Mitchell, Glover Quinn, and Kareem Jackson. Oh yeah, one of the best offensive attacks in all of football.

We are gonna be fine!

Here I am trying to cheer up Dave and you pull out the old quin isn’t a rookie comment! Next thing you are going to say is that Okoye isn’t goint to the Pro Bowl or that Frank Okam isn’t going to switch to SLB and fill in for Cushing for the first four games…..

Madden is awesome like that!

I will first add 5 points to every stat category for every Texan. Then I will delete 1 year from Quinn’s Career to make him a rookie. (I will also officially spell his name Quinn to hide my above typo…)

I usually play my franchise pretty straight

Although it sucks having to replace guys like Walter or rookies that get screwed in the rankings.

by papabear on Aug 9, 2010 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions

on that note

Lots of suckiness for you this year. The Texans got hosed on the rankings in pretty much every way (except Sharpton, the FO guys like him apparently).

by grungedave on Aug 9, 2010 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I'll be fine

I usually trade away older players and end up with multiple first round picks. I’m used to getting screwed by Madden. I wish they would wait to release the game a little longer though to get a better idea of rosters. It’s not as bad now, but their are usually a couple of rookies who end up starting for the Texans that Madden doesn’t have on the roster…or are rated 50.

maybe not when it comes to laying blame on himself or players/coaches for poor performance but when it comes to injuries, procedures etc., I don’t recall him ever being dishonest.

I've seen some good tweets regarding K-Jax and Okam.

I really want Okam to do something this pre-season. His talent is there, but if he could really work hard, then he could be a fantastic NT. If he can bang in the pre-season, I’d love to see him line up next to Okoye. Due to Okam’s size he will probably have a few double teams, leaving everyone else, especially Amobi, one-on-one.
