I am 100% in agreement with Peyton on this.

Look, if you run a hurry-up offense, you should not be forced to slow down for the refs. If the offense is ready to go, they should be able to hike the ball. PERIOD.

Give him a helmet

Let one of the other officials set the ball.

As on official....

I could understand that a helmet would help. I’ve only taken a helmet to the face once, only a split lip luckily, but it does happen.

The reason the Ump spots the ball is because he is positioned as the closest to the spot. They’ve now moved that spot to three times further away.(from 5 to 15 yards) but he is still the closest.

The other way around it is to make someone else responsible for the illegal snap. You see, everybody has a job to do, and calling an illegal snap is purely the Umpires call. Move that responsibility to the Ref or the HL/LJ and then you can maybe get away with not having the Ump all the way back in position.

But at the end of the day, if you can’t see the major problem with the official moving, check out the NFL.com video with Brian Billick and Warren Sapp.

Also, that should read "As AN Official"

But it is Friday here, so I’m not caring too much.

Problem is

A few officials ended up needing shoulder surgery as a result of contact with players back there. Helmets won’t fix the problem.

I sugget not having a stupid rule that literally prevents certain offenses from being able to play their game.

Me too

I’m not against anything that helps us beat the colts.

But in theory

its a stupid rule. In practice? I hope they bring down the entire Colts franchise with it.

Schaub never runs a hurry-up offense?

Not the way Man(lover)ning does ...

When Schaub runs the hurry-up it is generally in the last part of the half when the ref is back to his old position.

by Mikus318 on Sep 3, 2010 12:31 PM CDT up reply actions

If the ref can't get in position fast enough

then he shouldn’t be a ref. Let’s get some refs that are in shape and can actually move when needed.

by Mikus318 on Sep 2, 2010 1:36 PM CDT reply actions

In addition to my above comments......

Because of the historical position of the Umpire, they are generally the most solid guys on the field (out of the officials, obviously) They don’t need to move far, but need to be able to take a few knocks.

By moving them further away and out of harms way, you now need someone who is lighter on his feet and probably has a smaller frame.

I do like how much this seems to upset manning

I do agree with him though. This is going to make the hurry up offense less effective…and there’s times when that will affect every team.

I guess I'm not enough of a football egghead.

I didn’t even notice the change in the two NFL games I have been able to watch this preseason.

I do agree that

it will slow down the game a tad bit. but you have to remember, peyton runs hurry up offense all through the game. not just the last 2 minutes. but hey i dont really care when it comes to the rule that is just me…

Where this gets truly upsetting

is allowing the Refs to determine a game. Nobody likes it when the ref throws an unwarranted flag. It should be the players, not the officials, who determine the outcome of a game.

Also, Teams tend to use the hurry up offense well before the two minute warning if they are down. If you try to come back from a big, but not insurmountable, lead in the 4th quarter (say 17 or 21 points), your not all of a sudden going to try to catch up with only two minutes left, you do it at the start of the 4th.

by metal_militia on Sep 3, 2010 11:44 AM CDT reply actions

When we beat the Patriots last game last year ...

I don’t remember Schaub ever using the hurry-up although we had to (and did) score 21 unanswered points to end the game and win. The way I remember it we did it mainly with the run game (especially in the red zone). Am I mistaken?

by Mikus318 on Sep 3, 2010 12:35 PM CDT up reply actions

??

Of course the refs are there to decide the outcome of the game. That’s what officials do. Using this logic, the NFL should just go to an all-video ref system and not have anyone on the field. Until such time as that happens, there have to be refs on the field and the NFL should be just as concerned with their safety as it is with that of the players. IIRC in the last two years, several officials have had significant injuries resulting from collisions with players in the area where the umpire used to position himself. I don’t see how moving him to a safer position is a bad thing.

Teams and officials will adapt. Over time, the practical effect of this decision will be nil.

Moving the offical to a safe position

isn’t the issue. The issue is getting the ref to put a little pep to their step. Players have to adjust to the fast speed of the game, so do refs. Get a move on and hustle back to your position. Don’t nonchalantly walk back to your position.

Wait till they really break out their A-game.

I, amongst many other of the core contributors at Stampede Blue, are officially boycotting the site due to the deplorable "leadership" of head blogger BigBlueShoe. We ask, but do not expect, support, from you, our fellow fans, regardless of your team affiliation. The ideals of fairness and respect that are the foundation of this great sport that we all love should not stop at the chalk on the boundaries of the gridiron, but should continue through to the fans and beyond. For the officials not scheming for the Colts

The Super Bowl is in Dallas, and an AFC team HAS to go. Why not the Texans?

This is:

[ ] a big deal
[x] not a big deal

At most, this is going to add five seconds to the amount of time it takes to get a play off, and even then, it won’t happen in the last two minutes of the half. Teams will adapt and everyone will forget that it was ever any other way.

But for the short period that it annoys Fivehead, it will be very worth it.

First off

A frustrated Peightaun makes the baby Jesus smile and giggle.

Second, the umpire needs to move his ass. They were controlling the pace of the game which isn’t right. They also need to start getting some umpires who can move faster than Okam running after a twinkie. At one point during the game the umpire was standing in the middle looking around like he was lost. Even I was saying to myself, “Dude, wtf are you doing?”
