Texans' Final 53 (?) Man Roster

HOUSTON - SEPTEMBER 02: "The hardest decision was to cut the sixth tight end." - Gary Kubiak (possibly not true) (Photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images)

Mark Berman reporting the last of the cuts:

FB  Jack Corcoran
WR Bobby Williams
WR Derrick Townsel
TE  Derek Fine
OL  Adam Stenavich
OL  Steve Maneri
OL  Cole Pemberton
C    Brett Helms
C    Chris White
DL  Malcolm Sheppard
DL  Mitch Unrein
DL  DelJuan Robinson
LB  Will Patterson
LB  Isaiah Greenhouse
DB Mark Parson
DB Torri Williams
DB Jacques Reeves
QB John David Booty
RBs Chris Henry and Jeremiah Johnson

Star-divide

As I'm not sure who's been IRed, I don't know for sure where the running tally stands.  However, if you add in Andre Davis to the IR and Kris Brown, this should be the 53 man roster.

To me, the biggest surprise is DelJuan, but I'm also somewhat surprised we're carrying only five CBs and McManis is one of them.  And Nicholas Polk?

I believe this is the Opening Day 53-man roster:
QB - Matt Schaub and Dan Orlovsky (2, 2)

RB - Arian Foster, Steve Slaton, the newly signed Derrick Ward (3, 5)

FB: Vonta Leach (1, 6)

WR: Andre Johnson, Kevin Walter, Jacoby Jones, David Anderson, Dorin Dickerson (5, 11)

T: Duane Brown, Eric Winston, Rashad Butler (3, 14)

G/C: Mike Brisiel, Antoine Caldwell, Kasey Studdard, Shelley Smith, Wade Smith, Chris Myers (6, 20)

TE: Owen Daniels, Joel Dreessen, James Casey, Garrett Graham (4, 24)

DE: Connor Barwin, Tim Jamison, Jesse Nading, Antonio Smith, Mario Williams (5, 29)

DT: Shaun Cody, Earl Mitchell, Frank Okam, Amobi Okoye (4, 33)

LB: Kevin Bentley, Danny Clark, Brian Cushing*, Zac Diles, DeMeco Ryans, Darryl Sharpton, Xavier Adibi (6, 39)

S: Dominique Barber, Troy Nolan, Eugene Wilson, Bernard Pollard, Nicholas Polk (5, 44)

CB: Brice McCain, Sherrick McManis, Antwaun Molden, Glover Quin, Kareem Jackson (5, 49)

ST: Matt Turk, Neil Rackers, Jonathon Weeks (3, 52)

That's 52.  Anthony Hill is not listed on Injured Reserve at the team site, so he is, for now, #53.  That would also mean we have five TEs on the roster.  Ugh.

Update: Per DHC, Polk cut.  So are we at 52?  Or do I need remedial math?  Also, Hill is likely on the PUP, which I can't find.  That would mean 51.

why

would we keep 5 safeties, that makes little sense. Also has the waiving of Johnson been confirmed?

Johnson = yes

I think we’ll sign another RB and possibly a T or CB. If we do, then he’s probably the one to go.

Not sure why nobody is bringing up Ryan Moats. Vkies cut him on 8/24. We need a guy who can get up to speed quickly.

Agreed

We could easily bring him back in as a backup. I am sure he’d prefer it than being unemployed.

Moats

didn’t fumble any more than the rest of the backs we have. Besides we are asking for a 3rd RB here not a starter.

He didn't really play that great

He had a few big runs, but he had a difficult time running behind his blockers at the line. He did an awful lot of dancing and for zone blocking running game, that’s a big no no.

Not to put a damper on things

But our DT rotation scares the piss out of me. I honestly think they need to go scoop up zgonina.

I know Antonio plays there on third down, but unless okoye and okam really step up, and mitchel looks like a first rounder instead of a third rounder…. We are in trouble I think. Cody is what he is. Not great and not horrible.

I do think derrick ward will be a pleasant surprise

If it works.

But this early in the season, I don’t see why anyone would claim someone who can’t play right now for their initial 53 man roster.

Lanca Z thinks he stays there all year unless Slaton doesn’t stay healthy. Which I think is likely.

i think they are looking to trade casey.

that last game was just showing the league they have a guy that could start and help the offense of probably around 5-10 in the nfl right now. Probably want a 2nd or third rounder for him, or a quality rb from a team that has some talent at that position. I hope they dont, but they are loaded at the position and i think they like the rookie as 3rd string. If they could get a solid #2 rb or improved cb depth he may be gone. He is smart, young/cheap,vary versatile and has a great attitude. I hope we keep him but have a bad feeling he is our only real trade prospect we could go without, that another team would highly value.

To look further at my point

You made some good points about James Casey’s trade value. And you do make a good point. It seems odd to have such a glut of talent at a ‘minor’ position like Tight End. Daniels, Dreessen and Casey are all capable of being starters on an NFL team and it looks like Graham is heading the same way already.

I just think that Smithiak are the evil overloads of Tight Ends, we must hoard them in case the world runs out.

by Rip Jersey on Sep 4, 2010 6:47 AM CDT up reply actions

If I were to trade any TE

I would trade OD, especially if my backups that don’t have 2 injuries to the same knee & produce enough to offset his production and they didn’t have ludicrous salary demands. I would get a bigger return in other positions of need and provide quality depth.. at a cheaper price I know he is a fan favorite but if I were a GM those are things I can’t overlook.

But you probably wouldn't get too much for a twice-injured TE

Even if his upside is as good as OD’s. Let’s face it, though. Short of Clark, there aren’t that many TEs that are going to get much value in the trade market.

That would leave them with only 6 tight ends.

That’s unpossible.

Also, there is no way on God’s green earth that they will get a second rounder for Casey. But if some team were dumb enough to offer us a second rounder for THOR, I will personally fly to Houston and pimp slap Rick Smith if he turns it down.

Its possible

Denver just lost their starting TE, so they would probably be open to a trade.

I'll end this quickly

He has no trade value. You’re talking about somebody with six career receptions. We might get a 6th rounder for him, but that’d be it.

they cut Jeremiah Johnson?

Oh I am pissed about this. IR him at least, for fuck’s sake.

The money is on Smithiak signing him on the Practice Squad

I mean, who else is going to sign an injured RB up at this time of the year.

Yep, every team is in the same position when you are stripping down to 53

Guys on the bubble are getting cut and the teams really want to keep that guy they are cutting. The teams need healthy players who can play right now. When JJ is healthy, that is when they will want him, if they need him. This is an interesting time. I like watching it happen. I never really paid attention to all this until I started coming here at BRB. Now, I feel like I’m in there being part of it. I want to work for an NFL team……

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

considering they kept an unusual amount of guys at a couple positions

I hope it’s more of a situation where they really loved what they kept… rather than being overly unhappy with the guys they cut loose…

some interesting moes

but I like many others see jeremiah moved to ps he has shown too much good not to have him as a viable back up… I was under the impression eljian was doin good maybe smithiak hs fith in the other dts that have shown little to nothing minus okoye’s sack on tony homo.

Not sure why, but kinda shocked to see both backup Centers cut. I know neither was all that great, but who’s gonna backup Myers?

Disclaimer: I might be mistaken

But I think that both Brisiel & Caldwell can perform backup Center duties. (Remember, we fuckin’ love diversity for our 2’s.)

Just realized, with Davis on the DL who returns Kicks? I know Jones does Punts, will he do Kickoffs also? The Depth Chart has Steve Slaton as the backup.

Hmmm..

5 TEs but only 2 QBs?

Ward as no 3 RB is pretty weak at depth, but lucky to get him I guess.

Who is KR/PR with Holiday gone?

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is

by WarWolf on Sep 4, 2010 9:37 AM CDT reply actions

You only need one player on the field to throw the rock

But you can have up to five on the field able to receive it. Its pretty good maths to me. Plus, Te’s make good blockers on KR/PR teams, but you wouldn’t do that with your back-up QB.

My Guess

If slaton is unable to go, itll be McMannis on KR Jones on PR

Yes

Slaton is still questionable for Week 1. McManis is the only one left who returned kicks in camp/preseason, right?

Troy Smith over Matt Leinart

Leinart wants to be a starter while I think that Smith could do better than orlovsky since he is more mobile. Considering all the play actions and rollouts that we run, he would be a better fit for this offense. Am i wrong?

Feeling the five stages of grief since 2002.

didn't think about that until now...

With the play action they would have to flip it with Leinart. That would be chaos!
