Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Ask-A-Colts Fan

This Sunday the Houston Texans and the Indianapolis Colts square off in their 2010 season openers at Reliant Stadium. At 12 p.m. CST the two best teams in the AFC South division will go head-to-head in the hopes of grabbing the lead in the division and establishing themselves as the early-on team to beat.

I, a Colts fan, am providing this thread as a place where you can get to know your enemy a little better. The strengths, weaknesses, off-season acquisitions and all-around insight into the Colts that only a pack of football-obsessed nerds like us may be able to provide.

Now, I know that last season's Q&A went a little rough and some lingering animosity may be lingering between opposing fans as a result, so I'd like to lay down a few suggestions on how to treat this thread as to avoid ruining it for the people who actually have football related questions they want answered.

  1. I will be establishing a second thread this season entitled Troll-A-Colts Fan to work as a sister-thread to this one. It will be a place where you can go and curse Peighton Menning and his big-headed mama to your heart's content.
  2. Please try to keep the questions and answers football related. Example of a football question: How confident do you feel that Peyton's hurry-up style of offense will be able to adapt to the new umpire-placement rules? Example of not a football question: So, do you think Peighton Menning will sit on the bench and cry like a big-headed baby the whole game because the umpires won't let him cheat anymore?
  3. No attacks please. Let's try to keep this thread civil. Please don't personally attack posters, teams or players. There's a whole other thread for that. If you feel yourself starting to grow angry enough that you feel you have to vent, go to the other thread and scream, "F#$@K THE COLTS DIEDIEDIEDIEDIE!@!!!!!!!!!!!@!11!" all you want. I encourage it and will probably have more posts on that thread than anyone else.
  4. I, myself, do not visit Stampede Blue, and this post is not officially sanctioned by BigBlueShoe, but there will be posters from that site over here answering and asking questions and commenting on them. They are fans just like you and me and I expect them to conduct themselves as civilly as I expect all of you to.
  5. I have no power here. I can't shut down this thread or delete comments, and if I did have that power I wouldn't care to use it. It's not my place to take people to task on this site, for that I look to the other members of this community. It's your job to let others know when they cross the line.

I hope all of your questions get answered to your satisfaction, and may the best team win.

Thank You For Your Hospitality,

peytonsurdaddy

How is jerry hughes looking?

everytime i see a preseason game he is not out there even on second string. not to much worried about him cuz he will not see to much PT, just asking cuz he wnet to church with me and played on my brothers high school team.

from my perspective

he’s exactly where he needs to be – getting acclimated to playing at the professional level. He’s shown some of his athleticism and for me, hasn’t had whiffs nor has he had ZOMG!! plays. I expect he’ll get some playing time against the Texans, but likely very little unless the game is well out of hand either way.

How can you not love a team that does this?

by LovinBlue on Sep 5, 2010 2:00 PM CDT up reply actions

He looked really good last Thursday against the Bengals

I don’t expect him to play much at the start of the season only if Freeney or Mathis are injured, but I wouldn’t be surprise to see him get more snaps during the middle and towards the end of the season especially if the Colts are resting Freeney.

Opinions are probably going to vary...

But personally, I thought he was kind of disappointing to start off with, but the last couple games he’s really started to turn it on. A number of us have been going off the “Freeney Curve,” where it should take Hughes about half the season to get into the swing of things, then start showing what he’s really about. In that case he is doing splendidly.

With Freeney getting to be more suceptible to injuries (despite how quickly he heals), I’d look for about a third of the defensive snaps to feature him. Honestly, a couple of tackles and a pressure would be good for his first game. If he gets a sack either he is doing amazingly well, or something is wrong with your O-line.

Oh wow.

Great job pud.

I will be establishing a second thread this season entitled Troll-A-Colts Fan to work as a sister-thread to this one. It will be a place where you can go and curse Peighton Menning and his big-headed mama to your heart’s content.

I love how you remember to misspell Peitun Mannung’s name. You know us all too well.

Now for my question:

How bad are the Colts DT’s this season? Do you think the Texans can take advantage of that weakness?

by Jordann on Sep 5, 2010 1:59 PM CDT reply actions

I think the DT's are solid

and are probably a little better than last season. I’m kind of worried about Fili Moala’s DUI this past week and the ramification it may have on him playing this year.

The DTs won't be a weakness.

The rotation of Muir and Johnson starting with Moala and M.King should be stable. Don’t look for them to provide much help in the pass rush, but they can hold the line acceptably. My biggest worry is the gap formed by Freeney and Mathis charging the corner and the middle.

In terms of taking advantage… No. Freeney/Mathis/Foster/Hughes are going to pin the pass rush down quite nicely, and we’ve got Session and Sanders to sniff out the run. Any “weakness,” with the DTs will be negated.

I've heard that Indy will has finally been implementing a FB into their offense

As well as adding OLs who are better at run blocking. Which all seems to be a great idea; an implication that they’re attempting to be more balanced, thus, taking some of the pressure off of your QB… what’s his name again?

The actual question(s), though, is whether or not you believe this philosophy change will become permanent/how has it looked so far?

by Cut Block on Sep 5, 2010 2:00 PM CDT reply actions

Here's the problem with the execution of that idea this off-season....

Our starting line will likely be Johnson/Pollak/Saturday/DeVan/Diem…

Now, you’ll recognize that because it is effectively the same line we had last year. We tried to bring in guys who are bigger and stouter against the run (McClendon/Terry/Marinelli/etc) but McClendon (2010-4th round pick) was injured for quite a bit, Terry at tackle is still injured from last season and other like J.Thomas, Marinelli, Martinez simply were bad (with Thomas getting injured as well).

The change will only be permanent if we can actually find some healthy linemen who are good against the run and pass rush. As it is, if we can field the starting O-line stated above we’ll be happy simply because that line has not played together for a month or more. We’d like to see an improvement in our O-line for rushing, but for right now I’d personally just take a healthy O-line so Manning can have more than 2 seconds to use our 7 or 8 receiving targets to their full potential.

so the fullback sentiment is out the door, as well?

or are you guys sticking with the H-Back, full time?

by Cut Block on Sep 5, 2010 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Eh, technically Gijon Robinson is still our FB/HB

but he should have been axed. Honestly with Eldridge being such a good blocker, if he isn’t used on the line we’ll probably use him as a fullback (either him or DE Eric Foster), but given how poor the line is at making holes I don’t think we’ll be using that too much until we get some health.

I think the Colts want to move to using an I-formation of some kind eventually, but so long as our O-line is in the state it is, I don’t think we’ll be attempting it very much.

I don't think so,

It’s pretty easy for the hit counters, etc. to track that sort of thing. There’s no way that going directly to Indy Cornrows and clicking on an open thread in the FanShots will affect BBS in any way.

Have you considered putting up a fanpost at Music City Miracles? For the most part our distaste for BBS goes a long way, and his removal would be a good step for the future of Stampede Blue. I believe he makes all Colts fans look bad, and quite frankly, many of us have stopped going over to SB. A fanpost would make us more aware of that situation and you would for sure have the support of many Titan fans.

there’s no evidence right now that the Colts are implementing a FB in the offense. There was some speculation that Brody Eldridge would fill that role when he was drafted, but he’s only being used as an in-line TE with the occasional pass catching.

He isn't great, but the troubling thing is that since we cut Tui, we have no backup SAM....

I’m sure one of our 4 backups could handle it, but its still troubling that the only guy we had that took snaps in place of Wheeler was let go given the iffy nature many of us view him with.

Its Humber then Conner at bacup WILL.

Angerer and Glenn are the backup MIKEs. Tui was almost always playing SAM for the second and 3rd string LBs, and was the only one ever listed as backup SAM on the depth chart. Glenn played some with Angerer and Humber, but most of the time it was Humber/Angerer/Tui or Conner/Glenn/Tui on the field.

He just hasn’t this offseason. With the LBs we’ve had, he’s not needed too. Either that or they are grooming him to be Session’s backup. All I know is that Humber played almost exclusively on the right side and that the few times Tui was out it was when we were in a nickle package.

Kinda sorta.

We miss him as a member of the Colts, not so much as an impact player. He wasn’t particularly great at either DE or DT, but when we were lacking any depth at both spots, he really was a life saver. Now we’ve got guys better suited at both spots so in the game, he probably won’t be missed, but emotionally we’ll miss seeing him in a Colts uniform.

Mine plus explanations.

1) Health of the offensive line: CJ, Saturday, McClendon, Thomas, Terry, DeVan were all injured from our pre-season offensive line. Of those 6, 3 are starters and 1 is a (hopefully) future starter. The injuries weren’t massively serious, but still troubling for me personally. Last year when we had so many injuries to the secondary, we had really surprising backups… At Offensive Line, our backups for the most part are dog meat and only there because we need backups, not because we actually want THEM.

2) Prospect of improving the offensive line in the near future: We seriously tried to bring in new guys to improve the offensive line and we still have the same line we did last year. Unless Polian can dig up some gold, its unlikely that we’ll have any radical improvements in the offensive line in the next couple seasons.

3) The policy of clinging to vets who got beat in the preseason over the young guys who beat them: Case in Point, Gijon Robinson was kept over Colin Cloherty even though Cloherty was the better receiver, and better STer. Another was Keyunta Dawson over John Chick. We also axed Blair White and Sam Giguere who both did exceedingly well in TC and in preseason. We also kept J.Thomas on the O-line even though he played poorly. We dropped a ton of guys who had very strong showings for guys who didn’t do nearly as well. This isn’t a major season ending problem, but it could be harmful if some of these guys get picked up by other teams.

Ryan Lilja who was probably our best linemen besides Saturday.

But he was getting up there and was due too much money for Polian to stomach (why we keep Diem is a mystery to me though). Still, Pollak and DeVan split series last year with Pollak getting the start in the first 6 games, then DeVan for the next 9 then Pollak for the last 1. They traded out every series through the year, so Pollak and DeVan both have roughly the same playing experience last year. Current Richard is our LG, but he’s been doing an ok job at center in place of Saturday, so he may or may not take over LG in week 1. Thats just another Colts mystery.

Lilja also had a Sanders-esque injury history

I’m sure that played into him being let go. It wasn’t that long ago that there were questions as to whether his knee would heal enough for him to play again.

I think Richard did well considering.

He didn’t botch any snaps atleast. My poor feelings about the backups are coming mostly from our backup guards and Ugoh. When DeVan, CJ, and Saturday were out we were playing Ugoh/Thomas/Richard/Pollak/Diem, and the biggest holes I saw were caused by Ugoh, Thomas, and Pollak (and Diem but thats more utter dislike).

I would be worried though if Saturday wasn’t able to play because he’s had alot of time to heal. If he isn’t ready, then I’d be worried about how long he might be out for.

Colts Receivers?

Rank them for us will you?

I had Austin Collie as my 3rd WR for my Fantasy Football team last year and he did great. But with Gonzo back, I don’t know if he’ll receive the same amount of looks from Manning. So out of the three (Garcon, Collie, Gonzalez), who would you pick as your WR3 in your FF team?

by Jordann on Sep 5, 2010 2:29 PM CDT reply actions

I would put Collie as my third

since I believe he’ll see more time at the slot. Gonzo and Garcon is most likely be switching out at the 2nd receiver spot, plus Gonzo will be used all over the field.

how I see it

Wayne and Clark are fixtures, Addai will be the lead back, then the remaining two spots will be a rotating cast of Garçon, Collie, Gonzo and Eldridge depending on how they want to attack the opposing D.

I figured that

Wayne and Clark would be 1 and 2. I usually pick a Colts receiver around the 10th round because people tend to overlook them even though they produce well.

by Jordann on Sep 5, 2010 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions

though some people have Gonzo ranked before Garcon

personally, for me anyway, Its hard to gage where he is at right now. He is currently the fourth WR on the depth chart, but I think that has to do with Gonzo still trying to get his feet under him. He didn’t necessarily set the world on fire in the preseason with a few drops, deflected passes, and even a little fumbleitis. However, if Garcon continues his inconsistancies with drops and Gonzo gets back up to speed (which i think witll be the case), Down the line, Gonzalez should be the number 2 again.

Eh… sorry bout the little rant. To answer your question

1. Reggie Wayne
2. Pierre Garcon
3. Anthony Gonzalez
4. Austin Collie

Our only weakness in the secondary as it is right now is Hayden.

He doesn’t look to be back to his pre-injury self, and is not faring so well in man to man coverage. Lacey and Powers are both doing exceptionally well, and as I said, our safeties are the best tandem, and best top 3 in the NFL. Your passing offense will definitely be a test, but the secondary is not a place Colts fans would point too as a weakness for the most part. Maybe depth at secondary, but if we are talking just the one game, depth has very little to do with it.

Thats why I said Depth at secondary.

Hayden on his bad days is still better than Jennings on his best. I’d take Hayden/Powers/Lacey in a game against most people.

As I said, the depth is slightly troubling, but as we are talking about only one game at a time, I’m not too worried. As all 3 are healthy, its unlikely that we lose 2 of the 3 in one game, and even if we do, we just put Bullitt in for the super safety formation. The next game would have me worried, but thats another story.

Let the Reggie Wayne-Andre Johnson madness start.

Kidding, I don’t want that comparison to start again, It’s just pointless.

Now, I have a few questions:

1. Is this the worst O-line you guys have had in the Peyton Manning Era?

2. One of my sleepers this year, Joseph Addai, has looked solid in pre-season; is he expected to have 20+ carries this game? Or will he split with Donald Brown?

3. How has the CB Powers looked for you guys? He had a great year last year for a rookie, has he made a big jump in terms of level of play from last year to this year?

4. Are you guys concerned about your Run D? It hasn’t been looking good so far.

5. My final question: Which position is the most concern for you guys(Ex: DBs, DTs, OL, etc.)

Appreciate any answers.

1. It's not any worse than last year, really.

2. He should split with Brown and (occasionally) Hart.

3. He looks great. The only problem with him is injuries.

4. Not really. You can’t judge preseason like that. Sanders and Session should clean up any mistakes the D-line make.

5. OG.

1. It’s definitely up there for being pretty bad, but I don’t want to judge it before the season starts.

2.I expect Addai to split carries with Brown.

3. In the one pre-season game Powers played, he looked awesome. He’s definitely improved from last season, that kid’s a stud.

4. I’m not too concerned; if think Coyer just wanted to play a vanilla defense during the pre-season.

1. It’s in tight competition with last years line for that (dis)honor

2. Addai will be the lead back, but Brown will get significant carries. I’d guess 60-40 in favor of Addai if both stay healthy.

3. Powers looks good, especially since Kelvin Hayden, the supposed big money vet has continued to struggle

4. It’s not even close to 2006 level bad, it’s just standard, Colts run D bad. If the offense can put up points and the D can stop the pass then it’s not really an issue.

5. OL, by far.

1) I was MIA for a few years and not as serious a fan as I am not, but my guess is that yes, this is probably the worst offensive line overall in terms of backups as well, that we’ve had.

2) Joseph Addai will be earning his new contract this year. Brown has looked very poor to me, and while they’ll probably be splitting snaps, if Brown can’t pick it up, Addai may start getting more work after the first couple of weeks.

3) Powers has been doing great, but his injuries are becoming a problem. Honestly, look for Jacob Lacey to have the biggest jump in performance, especially if Hayden keeps looking so lost on the field. I hate to say it, but if Hayden doesn’t pick it up, Lacey may have his spot mid-season.

4) No, not at all actually. We have Sanders back. We always look poor in the pre-season, but Sanders has been a beast again, and look for him to start striking the fear of Bobzilla back into running backs while he’s healthy.

5) Most concern is hands down the offensive line. Just no question about it. The defense is healthier, and every other position looks to either be very deep, or very solid. O-line is weak, and very short on any talent at backup.

Ok

1. 2008 was the worst offensive line the Colts ever fielded

2. yes and no. it does seem like Addai should receive the bulk of the carries but with the plethora of backs the Colts have, 20+ a game is a little over the top. I expect brown to see more action, but until he gets his pass protection duties down, his touches will be limited

3. Powers has looked phenomenal. Its just a matter of staying healthy for him

4. No, there is no concern about the run D. Im not sure how much attention you payed to the preseason games the Colts have been playing, but that is a non-issue. Perhaps C.J Spillers big run may have distorted your perception, but the Colts have given up less than 4 yards a carry

5. As has been said a million times already our offensive line is the only major concern we all share.

Oddly we had 2 different versions of Garcon in TC.

Guns was a bigger, stronger version of Garcon who had better hands, but couldn’t break the roster, and then we had Taj Smith who was smaller and more agile than Garcon but had just as bad of hands, but just as much of a boom/bust potential.

True, but to be honest....

I think we could have seen this same story play out with either Smith or Guns as well in place of Garcon.

I honestly felt like Guns and Garcon were very close in terms of skill to each other, the difference was opportunity. Then again, maybe thats just blind homerism. I just always thought if Giguere had been thrown into the lineup out wide he’d have actually done better than Garcon because he’d have caught 60% of his passes instead of 50%.

I'm not the biggest Garçon fan, I'm sure you know that

but it’s not hard to see what the Colts like in him.

Personally I hope to see a lot of Garçon-Eldridge and Collie-Gonzo pairings (with the Wayne/Clark/Addai core). 2 TE, Garçon-Eldridge is a nice look for run, run, run, PA deep pass. While Collie-Gonzo gives you a spread it out look that’ll just pick Ds apart.

Oh I agree. Garcon is a good receiver.

But I just think that whether its Mannings tutelage, or just Polian’s ability to find receivers, we just have a very good choice in receivers the past 2/3 years. Now if only we could have that problem at OL……

Anyone Manning is targeting.

This is honestly probably the deepest group of people able to catch that Manning has ever had. Between Wayne and Clark getting their thousand yards each, Garcon, Collie, and Gonzo are all capable of getting 800 yards this season (all of them wont, but any of them could). Then you have Eldridge who will probably get a couple hundred at most in place of Robinson as a blocking then receiving TE. Tamme has looked really good and could easily get a 200-400 if Clark went down for a few games. Then you look at the RBs, and you have Addai who consistently gets 300 receiving yards a year and Brown who is very capable of catching. Hart is a Vet who can catch, and Moore looks to have good hands as well. Honestly, the fact we have so many good targets is the only thing that makes up for our shotty o-line.

Ugoh and Diem can't block the outside very well, and their only hope...

is to possibly push the rusher far enough to the back to allow Peyton to move forward. Our LG is a big question still, and while Saturday is a solid center the guards around him make the whole middle very muddled. I personally like DeVan, and think he’s done really well (not universally, just given the circumstances), but Diem is such a liability the right side is about as bad as the left. Diem is almost always out of place. His first action is to automatically jump 5 feet to the right and open this gaping hole for a DT or LB to rush through and only Addai’s blocking ability saves Peyton. We try putting a TE with Diem most of the time, and he still pushes the edge so far apart from the line it isn’t funny. The line as a whole isn’t big enough to push a D-line back, which really makes opening running lanes difficult, and basically leaves Addai/Brown with a wall to run into, and they can only hope they fall down on the positive side of the LOS.

So yes, our O-line really is that bad.they just don’t seem to have cohesion as a group. Each individual component has its own weakness that none of the others compensates for at all, so instead of having a solid line, we have 5 so-so linemen.

:-P Thats just my take.

If you actually saw reports than you know more than me, I’ve just not seen him mentioned at LG at all anymore, and I wasn’t particularly moved by his performance at LG the few times he was there.

For those wanting a more sensible answer, go with reports. Mine was just opinion.

well they kinda need him at LT

that’s an easy explanation for why he’s not been a factor at LG recently.

I was meaning in the depth chart or anything.

With CJ supposedly coming back soon, I’ve just not seen anything saying that Ugoh was going to be moved back to LG at all. Maybe keeping Linkenbach is a sign he will, but I honestly have no idea whats going on in the colts head.

Very quickly.

He is now CJs backup, but CJ was injured for quite a bit of the preseason games, which is why Ugoh was starting at LT.

He tried to get moved to LG, but he sucked there as well, so they thought it best to keep him at just backup LT it seems.

Well that depends

Certainly the talent is there to be the best D in the Manning Era, but ill take the wait and see approach. I do, however, think that this will be up there as one of the top D’s the Colts have ever fielded. Best ever though? again, ill wait and see

Yes, we are that concerned about the offensive line. We dont want to watch the franchise run for his life on every play the moment the ball is in his hands. Also, if the Colts can rediscover the running game, play action pass will open up, which means 80 yard TD bombs galore!

I think the power he has garnered...

With other sites and head bloggers is more of a prohibitive factor. I wouldn’t be shocked at all if he didn’t have something to do with the shutting down of our OT’s at Indy Cornrows. There was no warning from the staff or anything. Just a “Sorry, we’re shutting you down.” coincidentally on the same day that I posted these threads over here. Now that they all seem to be, at least peripherally, under the same roof of the new SB Nation Indiana site BigBadBrad’s power grows.
I’m not a big believer in coincidence.

Lol, thanks :-)

Oddly, thats what Tom over at Indy Cornrows said when we asked if we could crash there, then he unceremoniously booted us out with some mention of “numerous complaints,” without really any kind of “how do you do,” about it.

I mean, most of us understand we are just nomads, but we also can understand wearing out our welcome. We probably won’t troll your guys space any longer than the week leading up to the games, but if there ever is an issue We really do try to be mature about stuff. If you get complaints, let us know and either we’ll work better to abide by rules/policies we’ve been breaking, or we’ll make ourselves less burdensome. We just appreciate the hospitality of not only you in a management position, but also the community as a whole. Win, Lose, or Tie, we are all football fans, and generally fairly good people at heart.

Again, thanks for the hospitality Tim. I am just one guy saying this, but I’m sure alot of my fellow rebels without a home are quite appreciative.

So now that I see how your ‘Peerless’ Leader treats you, you have my sympathy. You all seem intelligent, respectful and passionate about the game. So welcome.

Just know that when Schaub torches you for 360/3, I expect your humble tribute.

A question. Is your entire season in the toilet if Paightun has a season-ending injury? You seem to be missing Sorgi right about now.

by Christopher H on Sep 5, 2010 9:44 PM CDT up reply actions

despite his performance last year

I do trust Painter to maintain a lead, as long as it’s significant and there is little time on the clock. But right now I haven’t seen enough from him to suggest he can manage an entire game… he’s got a good arm and is a nice tall QB, but I hope to see him turn a corner soon and display confidence in the pocket.

At least Orlovsky has starting experience (right? Lions?). Painter is a 2nd year QB in the league with only 1 game (@ Bills) as his starting experience (technically, Manning started, but he came out fairly quickly),

How can you not love a team that does this?

by LovinBlue on Sep 5, 2010 9:52 PM CDT up reply actions

We honestly don't know.

I’d say about 80% of colts fans blame Painter for week 16, which leads to their utter dislike of him no matter what the guy does ever for the rest of his life. Some like LB are more rational about it. I tend to be more of an apologist.

Painter struggled in his first 3 games, and had little to show for the first while. Now while I say it was mostly to do with him being stuck with dog meat the first 2 games, he wasn’t particularly great either way. He has shown the most basic semblence of a pulse though and while still not being particularly good has started showing enough in terms of better decision making and better pocket presence to think that he could just about be as good as Sorgi after the same amount of time. Not great, but could possibly engineer a drive or two by himself.

Now, the summation of all that is that Painter would probably have a mental breakdown if he had to carry the franchise the entire season, although he’d mature quite a bit. I would think we could still pull out 2-4 wins with Painter (depending on when Manning left), but I’d say a top 10 draft pick wouldn’t be out of the question.

well Sorgi's shoulder is trashed (currently on IR for it, again)

so keeping him wouldn’t have helped the backup situation.

But hey, if the Colts season goes down in flames I can realistically hope for them to draft Adrian Clayborn.

Why not just tank the rest of the season & shoot for Jake Locker?

Agreed, although I had been thinking...

If Locker screws up this season and pulls a Clausen…. Maybe he’d be worth picking up with the 32nd pick in the 2nd round? You know, kind of our own Aaron Rodgers?

Seattle has their eye on Locker

and yes, he would slide to the second if he totally screws the pooch this season. I can’t see him doing an epic, Claussen-worthy swan dive though. I was reading where insider whispers are talking about the benefits of drafting the local golden boy and keeping him there. Much like the pre-draft rumors of the Jag-offs drafting Tebow for that Florida flavor. This time though, the whispers make sense as Seattle will probably suck enough to have a high pick, and Hasselbeck is ready to be put out to pasture.

Think how smart Data was on TNG. Manning probably has a head twice as large as Data’s, so think how much more capacity Manning has.
