Matt Leinart To Houston? Dogs And Cats Living Together?

ESPN says your Houston Texans "have emerged as a leading candidate" to sign Matt Leinart. The Chronicle also says the Texans are interested.

Dan Orlovsky is your QB2 right now. Frightening as that might be, does adding Matt Leinart truly enhance your QB depth? Is he really an upgrade over Orlovsky and/or John David Booty (if the latter is brought back to the active roster or, more likely, the practice squad)?

You're Smithiak. Do you sign Matt Leinart?

Here's my thing...

When I think about the hideous thought of Schaub injured, I consider what would be better: “Checkdown Charlie” like Leinart’s been called, or the interception machine himself Dan-O. Considering that we have guys like AJ, JJ, OD, Thor, KW, and DD versus Fitzgerald and maybe Breaston…I’ll take a guy who can checkdown or hit underneath routes and let the YAC speak for itself.

Will he lead us to the promised land? Probably not. Will he make me want to beer bong bleach like Dan-O does everytime he gets under center? Probably not. In the end, I’m all about getting someone who can consistently not screw it up for the rest of us, and maybe even fetch a nice trade in the end.

Orlovsky vs Leinart

That’s basically what it comes down to. So if, God forbid, Schaub goes down who do you want coming in? My vote is Leinart. I’ve seen what Orlovsky can (or more accurately can’t) do.

by TexanSchmackDown on Sep 5, 2010 11:24 PM CDT reply actions

My opinion exactly

Orlovsky makes mistakes throwing against back-ups….Durga only knows how he’d do against starters. Leinart’s at least an accurate checkdown thrower…hell, if he loves TEs then he’ll have plenty of options here.

The other night during the game thread

I cracked a joke while DanO was busy throwing picks and said the Cardinals were offering Leinart for a keg of beer and 10 lbs. of bar pretzels. Now I’m beginning to feel karmaically punished for it. That said, I guess I might see Leinart as the lesser of two evils. Still evil, though, lest we forget.

i voted no.

i just don’t see the benefit. let’s assume that Schaubby stays healthy all season. i much rather Dan O feeding him plays, than Leinart. I think the reason that Koob has such a man crush on him is because he knows that every QB needs a solid #2 a.k.a sidekick. he was that for Elway, and i think both him AND Dan O know that’s gonna be his career for the Texans. Eventually he may be called on to start but let’s all be of the mindset that Schaubby is gonna have a healthy season again.

THIS▲

Being a Colts fan I’ve learned from experience that your #2 QB is relied upon more for his ability to run game-planned mock practices against your D in the week leading up to your next game and feeding the starting QB defensive reads through the headset while the game is happening than actually being relied upon to “win the season” for you if there is some kind of catastrophic injury to your starter.
That shit isn’t going to happen with either Dan-O or Leinart.
Teams never win Super Bowls with back-up QB’s.
And, in our case, sometimes they don’t win them with the best QB that ever donned cleats. ;)

Some back-ups led their team to Super Bowl wins

Kurt Warner and Tom Brady are probably the exceptions to the rule rather than the norm.

While possessing back-up quality, Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl ring because he washed Ray Lewis’ jock

For those of you who don't know:

Darelle Revis just signed with the Jets. Do we play them this year? Because if we do, we are going to get butt fucked.

I disagree....

because the dynamic is totally different from last year’s opener. Bush’s defense will be light-years better than they were in game 1 of last year even w/out Cush. Our running game will be better. Rex Ryan will be fatter. Although we do play them at their house, I still like our chances, especially later in the season like it is-so we will have Cush. All good.

That’s months away so who knows how each team looks heading into that game, but my two points are….A) The Jets offense looks like crap and can’t score. B) Revis only cuts out Johnson….not Walter, Jones, Anderson, or Daniels.

Cromartie and Wilson are above average number 2 and 3 corners. Their front 7 is going to abuse are O-line, so It’s going to be very tough to score.

and you still haven’t accounted for the 29 TEs.

I’m just not high on the Jets. They lack offense, and I remember what they were….a 7-7 team who got lucky to run into 2 teams who laid down….then ran into depleted Cincy and overrated San Diego. They have a tougher schedule and got rid of their #1 RB. How people are predicting them to be 12-4 Super Bowl champions is beyond me.

But, like people are saying here on using a CB to cover Dallas Clark,

they could easily play a nickel against us and play Wilson on OD and whoever else. They can afford to do that, their D-line is sick.

To counter that they can go in dime against our 3 WR set.

Hypothetically speaking of course. Our interior line is so crappy that Jenkins can probably force himself through a triple team. Hell, they can play with 7 DBs all day and still beat us in the trenches. Jenkins is just so dominant. Shaun Ellis is no slouch either. There has been nothing but positive feedback on Vernon Gholston, who just converted from LB to DE, so their entire D-line is above average(Gholston has to prove himself first).

is if the reason we didnt throw to andre hardly at all vs revis or scrabble was because of baby shan’s play calling.. i mean.. obviously he wasnt open nearly as much as he would be against other CB’s, but alot of the reason revis didnt give up jack shit for yards or catches was because lets say 75% of the time they were not open and 25% the time they just didnt even look his way. i bet if baby shan had hit puberty before last year we woulda had some receptions on him

I don't think it's about confidence, it's about reality.

Schaub’s reputation as injury prone is undeserved. But cheap hits do happen. Unplanned circumstances do happen. And you would like a shot at winning some games should your franchise QB need some healing time. You would like for your season to not be immediately ruined by his absence. Hence the interest.

"It's the sport of kings....better than diamond rings.....football."

by Christopher H on Sep 6, 2010 1:10 AM CDT up reply actions

My point being...

Pass-heavy offenses like the Texans or the Colts cannot realistically be expected to win games with anyone other than their franchise QB. The offensive system depends on them to win games. Let’s face it, we’re not the Jest or the Ratbirds. Our defenses aren’t going to win shit for us, and the fact that we’re in such a competitive division negates the possibility of us taking the title if we even lose one or two additional games due to a shady back-up QB. Our money is better spent shoring up failings elsewhere than wasting it on a better-than-average back-up QB that might lose us one game instead of two. If Schaub goes down for more than a couple of games you’re fucked no matter what scrub you’ve got to back him up. You might as well have someone who can hold a clipboard and pray to Jesus instead of wasting that dough on some NFC wash-out.

The reality is...

Kubiak is in love with Dan-O. Why? How the hell should I know? Read Kubiak’s quotes on Dan from the preseason, and it’s becomes clear either Kubiak is trying to show his QB #2 he has faith in him when he really doesn’t, or he has faith in him for Durga only knows what reason.

We’ve seen Kubiak hold onto plays longer than they should. We’ve also seen Smith go out and grab a Rex Grossman.

In conclusion, it’s not up to Kubiak if we see Leinart in Steel Blue or Ketchup Red this season. It’s on Smith.

Even still considering that, we still kept Orlovsky. The guy just plain makes bad reads, bad decisions, and is inaccurate too often. He’s an oaf with the football, and we’re just lucky the guy hasn’t gotten any of our third or fourth string Wide Receivers or Tight Ends killed with how he throws the pass to where defenders are salivating for the hit.

Also, I dream of Joique Bell, but I just think Kubiak is satisfied with the back situation, and I’m not sure I blame him. While Slaton isn’t an every down back, he compliments Foster incredibly well. Foster gets the bulk, and Slaton gets the specialization he’s best at. It’s win-win. I’d still like Joique Bell anyways, but I’m not seeing it happen unfortunately.

Leinart better than Orlovsky? What are you people smoking...

Orlovsky preseason stats:

ARI – 12 comp – 21 att – 129 yards – 6.1 avg – 0 TD – 0 INT
NO – 12 comp – 19 att – 140 yards – 7.4 avg – 1 TD – 0 INT
DAL – 3 comp – 4 att – 25 yards – 6.3 avg – 0 TD – 0 INT
TB – 11 comp – 16 att – 113 yards – 7.1 avg – 0 TD – 2 INT

Other than that one quarter in TB, he was pretty good for a backup. Plus, Orlovsky knows the system and this is not the kind of offensive system you can just plug anyone into. Anyone here honestly think if (God forbid) Schaub goes down in week 1 that Leinart is going to be able to step in and be effective? You want to sign him and stick him on the practice squad and give him time to learn the system, that’s one thing. But signing him as the #2 backup is just plain crazy.

True

our second string Receiving corp could honestly be starters on a lower tier team… and any team would love to have JJ, DA, or Casey…

You left out one MAJOR stat. The ONLY stat that matters when comparing two guys whose on the field play is equally bad.....

BEAT THAT DAN-O!!!

Get Leinart here NOW! At least we can revel in his off the field antics.

Just to throw it out there

I don’t give a shit either way. I don’t think it’s an upgrade of enough significance to really talk about.

That said, I do think if Matt Leinart had gone to Oregon State and never made it beyond a low-end bowl, half of the people who are so against this wouldn’t be. His only real issue (for a backup quarterback, mind you, I’m not saying he’s a good starter) is the fact that he might not be motivated enough. And if he hadn’t been Deadspinned/gone to SC then you’d get like 3 dissenters saying “I dunno about that attitude…” and everyone else saying “OMG ORLOVSKY SUCKSSSSS LEINART IS STILL YOUNG!”

by riversmccown on Sep 6, 2010 5:50 AM CDT reply actions   1 recs

His being a SC Alum

is deff a big draw back. me living in AZ, I got to watch camp a few times, and have had the chance to watch him in games… He is NOT A STARTING QB and probably wont ever be. he is young but so is orlovsky. He makes just as many mental mistakes and has a problem actually hitting his Receiver. I dont think it would be that much of a difference between the two. and Even though Sage gave the world the Rosencopter I would rather have him than these two. I personally don’t see enough talent in the pool to find a solid #2 QB right now. So I pray to Durga, Schaub has a back to back clean slate of health. If Schaub and Arian Foster stay healthy i see no reason why the Texans don’t make the playoffs. maybe it is me being a homer, or maybe it is because i see our O and I know it is on the level of Indy, NE etc.

Dear Prisoner 247290-Z

You have a choice. You may either die by Orlovsky firing squad or Leinart lethal injection. Which shall it be?

For the record...

I’m fully against signing him. Even when he was at the University of Southern Cheating, I didn’t consider him to be an NFL quality QB. When you add on the poor work ethic, bad attitude, and his inability to complete a pass beyond five yards, I’d rather go with the evil I know.

Matt Leinart, good deal.

If you like football and good looking women, you can’t be all bad. If you love good looking women and own a Heisman trophy, you can’t be all bad. If you love good looking women and the privledge of competing against a hall of fame QB for years and were able to learn a thing or two, you can’t be all bad. If you love football, good looking babes, beer and have started a few NFL games as QB, you can’t be all bad. If you don’t like football, beer, good looking women and hate Matt Leinart you are most likely a homosexual. Why do you live in Texas? I say let the bad boy give it a try, at least he’s not gay and doesn’t throw INTs or put the ball on the ground. Things could be worse you could live in Arizona and watch the head coach give away the best QB in the franchise, “and then they had none”. Sucks to be them. The Houston fans should be counting their blessings. Two maybe three quality QBs? Can’t be all bad.

Matt Leinart has not proven himself to be a quality QB in the NFL. I don’t believe he’ll be a good fit for this team. This is a mistake.
