Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Per Pancakes:

Orlovsky's new deal calls for him to make a base salary of $850,000 — a reduction from $2.25 million. He can make up the difference by earning $25,000 for every game he's the No. 2 quarterback. He also can earn $100,000 for every game he's the starting quarterback — a maximum of 10 games and $1 million.

In 2011, Orlovsky was scheduled to earn $2.75 mllion. Instead, he will receive a base salary of $1.375 million.

I would imagine that Orlousy was told to either take a pay cut or hit the road.

If my math is correct

The Texans are getting two backup QBs for the price of about one.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

Kubiak should've just cut him and gone with Booty

if they wanted a cheaper option. Booty looked more competent than Dan.

In an uncapped year

It would have been less painful to just cut him, I agree.

Call me crazy, but I bet Leinart passes him on the depth chart by Week 6. At the latest.

^This

I am disappointed that Kubiak (or maybe Smith) does not seem to be able to admit that he/they made a huge mistake by signing DanO and giving him millions. His 2nd INT vs TB looked like sexy rexy just throwing the ball up for grabs; absolutely horrible. He should only make $25K of that bonus as Matt2 should be #2 by week 2.

Just wrote about this on SBN-H, but

McClain writes that Orlovsky takes the paycut, and then the next tweet is the Texans giving Kris Brown an injury settlement?

Robbing Dan to pay Kris. Awful.

Does it say anything about K Brown getting any offers from other teams or is he just going to live off the injury settlement?

He needs to contact Brad Lidge and get the name of his shrink

and then use the settlement money for therapy. He and Brad have the exact same problem.

Had two kickers on the roster last year. That’s worse than having a dedicated LS in my opinion.

I don't see

the connection between Orlovsky and Brown. I’d think more along the line of Orlovsky has been robbing the Texans, so now he has to make restitution by helping pay Leinart’s salary.

by HouTxFan on Sep 8, 2010 8:29 PM CDT up reply actions

will leinart actualy resign with us next year

if we offer him something like a 3 year 4-6 mill contract ? I think he would be a solid #2, given time to learn the system. He didn’t throw a single pick in the pre-season. Compared to danO that is a big improvement.

by b4theproffit on Sep 8, 2010 7:00 PM CDT reply actions

Hopefully

The Texans correct this position next offseason by releasing both Dan And Leinart and signing a veteran old timer. We don’t need any more damn ‘projects’ for Kubiak to play with.

I disagree

I like an older back-up, but I wouldn’t mind seeing a late-round developmental QB picked up.

In 2-3 years

when Schaub is a little older I could agree with a project. I think its too soon right now. We just need an experienced ex starter who can manage a well oiled machine.

If you have a 53 man roster where only 45 can dress...

it doesn’t hurt to spend a low rounder on a developmental QB otherwise the Texans are always gonna be looking for 1-2 year back-ups.

Think of the many teams who have that young guy who shines in preseason time....

and how often he gets flipped for picks. It’d also keep Kubes busy from finding another project.

Talking to yourself

All the cool schitzos are doing it.

Q: If losses by fewer than 7 points are 3 times more likely than blowout losses to cause Tim to get blindingly drunk, do you take the over or the under on the number of Scott appearances as 3.5?

TexansDC: False. You can’t get drunk from Coors Light.

by LoneSpot on Sep 9, 2010 9:45 AM CDT up reply actions

Now is the perfect time for a project.

Especially two like Dan O and Leinart. Our team has to transition from one qb to another and it takes time to develop qbs especially ones from bad systems. I here all this bad talk about these two guys.

Dan-o came from a horrible system in detroit that honestly stunted his growth. He has gone from making really stupid decisions like holding the ball or forcing a pass. To making fairly good decisions and dumping when he needs to. His accuracy is what worries me.

Leinart I believe has quite a bit of upside. He seems like he makes good reads and is very accurate with the ball. With the exception of course of throwing the long ball. Which isn’t as heavily used in the texans playbook. If and when we do go long its usually to a wide open jj and aj. If he can’t throw a bomb to an open reciever then he has no business throwing a football at all.

On the case of both our backups is that they resemble similar issues, leaning more on dan-o, of when schuab came to the texans. He made some very poor decisions and gambled when forcing plays. I hated schaub and had no belief in him when he first came to this club, my bromance was with the sex cannon and sage at the time. It was only after a few seasons that he proved to everybody that he was capable of handling the job and is now among the elite quarterbacks.

This club has good vision in the sense of they know that one player will not always be around, whether it be injury or contract/“pay me rick” related scenario. With that good vision comes the knowledge that qbs do not sprout from the ground and instantly become plug and play in this league. Great players must be transitioned into a system and 2 to 3 years is the perfect amount of time.

All in all one of these two guys is a steal and at worse is good trade bait when fully developed.

by Big_T on Sep 8, 2010 8:16 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Nice analysis

Though I remain stubborn in that I don’t believe Leinart has upside. But I understand this is most likely my bias, and I’ll try to look beyond that.

To me, the difference between the two is that DanO has the arm and Leinart doesn’t. We don’t need to go all Sex Cannon, but this is an offense that relies on strong intermediate passing. I think that’s what makes Schaub so special. And I haven’t seen Leinart prove he has the arm to be in our system.

Not saying you aren't right bfd

But I do believe it’s impossible for any UT guy to see potential out of any USC, or Pac 10 player.

by Mike Kerns on Sep 8, 2010 9:46 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Speaking of Leinart

Has anyone else noticed that he looks like he has not done any weight training? Just an observation and I could be incorrect on that. He’s the same height as Schaub but about 15-20 lbs lighter. If he worked out with the weights, it would improve his game a lot.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Sep 8, 2010 9:56 PM CDT up reply actions

yep

hard for UT fans to see ANY value from USC ;-).

Cushing is THE only exception and this is grudging admiration for an INCREDIBLE player. My tendency is to conveniently forget that Cushing came from USC.

Leinart bah! you said “potential” not “value” hmmm I’ll just have to fall back on “wait and see”. I’m totally not qualified to decide Leinart’s potential but Kubiak is qualified to decide that potential. But value? Even I get to make value calls and as a Longhorn, I say Leinart has very little value atm ;-).

No one was beating down the door to get him

by Rip Jersey on Sep 9, 2010 8:14 AM CDT up reply actions

I think that one of the key differences is...

…that Ice-Ice-Baby is seen as being less likely to make a STUPID error trying to “fit one in” when Gary just wants to control the ball (in a worst-case situation where Shobby has gone down).

For eight plays Dan-O looked like a world beater in game 4 of the preseason. Then he looked like a gambling idiot.

I think that Kubiak would rather have a guy that is overly cautious as a backup than a riverboat gambler.
