LDJA12 Stalking VY again...
So... here we have another example of LDJA12 riding VY's nuts... The man has no shame... However, I wouldn't object to VY on the Texans under a few conditions... after the jump.
For it to work, the Texans would need to make a few things clear:
- Vince would be useless as a QB in this offense. He is just too stupid and immature to take on a leadership role.
- His salary should be commensurate with his role. He's already milked Beelzebud and that would just make this situation a bit more ironically entertaining. I'd offer him the league minimum as a base and then heavily reward good performance with incentives.
- VY could provide some interesting options lining up in a wildcat package or lining up as a wide receiver in a standard package.
Not likely I'll grant you, but then it wasn't likely when LDJA12 got PAID to write about it either....

I have no objections of Vince Young working for the Texans
provided he’s working in the janitorial services. It may be a stretch for him to handle all those responsibilities but i think he can do it.

I would rather see Thor
Run the Wildcat™ or similar thing.
I am totally optimistic about the Texans new season - at least until the first of the 4 or 2 (if any) preseason games

If we use the Wildcat
Casey would make the most sense to run it as he has experience doing so

he might have been Rice's QB if he stayed one more year as well

Yeah, I don't think we'll ever use it
Unless Schaub gets hurt & we don’t have a capable backup QB

IMHO
If I ever see us run the wildcat with our weapon-set, I’ll picket Kubiak myself.

Unless Foster is running it
& he busts it for a 50+ yard TD, then you’ll just run up and hug & kiss Kubiak

I'm with you
I think he’d be a decent backup/wildcat QB.
But there’s no way I’d sign him given the circumstances. Every Schaub pick would be met by the VY fanboys as a mandate that he shouldn’t be the starter. There’s too much drama here.
- Rivers McCown, From Mom's Basement | Twitter | SB Nation Houston | Battle Red Blog
Exactly
Signing VY would be akin to dousing The Schaub in gasoline, and the match would be struck the first time Schaub threw an interception.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
I'd rather sign Bruce Gradkowsi or Josh Johnson over VY
both are proven & capable backups, & don’t whine & moan when sent to the bench. Johnson also has a similar skill set to VY without all the drama.

Gradkowski would be our best bet if the Raiders don't hold onto him
He’s a proven backup & won with some really mediocre & undeveloped talent

Yeah, there's enough drama as it is...
It would be more disruptive than “creative”. Also, I don’t see VY being reasonable about the money… He’s never had to up to now, so why start? I don’t think he’s aware of how much of this is on him.

does anyone actually think that VY will suddenly mature enough to accept that kind of role?

Nice avatar by the way... Has BFD or Jordann seen it yet?
I was kinda’ spit-balling an idea. I spend so much time thinking negatively about the guy, it was just an exercise in contrarian thinking for me. As Rivers and Tim accurately point out, BESIDE the maturity deficit that will prevent him from realizing that he needs some real coaching and growth, he would be a completely disruptive influence in the locker room and in the fan-base.

the only way this happens, is if VY signs at league minimum...
and hangs on to the 3rd-string QB spot for a couple of years… this way, less drama. The dude is a serious project.
I honestly don’t think the guy could carry even Leinart’s jock.
Why do we discuss the Wildcat ?
If Koobs was smart he would have used it years ago, even if you don’t intend to use it often. It would be yet another thing for the defense to worry about, and would be one less play to worry about schaub taking a sack or big hit on.

How many non-QBs out there can step in and be dependable in such a role?
Not to mention the fact that these cute little option plays would result in disrupting the rythmn that is so vital to the WCO and ZBS systems.
Furthermore, the WCO already utilizes so many different looks. We’re not lacking, there.
There is a reason why option offenses have been so short-lived in pro football. They’re almost completely ineffective at this level, entertaining as they might be. Even more ineffective today, as much as it’s been played out over the last few years, with the copycat syndrome among coaches.
The Dolphins were a notable exception, and found some effectiveness with it. Then again, they used it (almost exclusively) as a power run formation. Not as much for the end-arounds and gadget plays. Also note that they didn’t even run their “Wildcat” this season. They phased it out just in time, it would seem…
Don't you think the Wildcat has jumped the shark?
A couple of years ago, teams were using it all the time. Now, you might see it once or twice a game, if that. It’s not really worth it to bring in a player specifically to run the Wildcat twice a game.
Which is kind of what you were saying, I think.

yeah
And as far as professional football goes, my opinion is that it never really was a viable concept. Running QBs are dangerous, indeed. But the option is crap. Something Frank Bush would probably build his offense around, if he was ever asked to build one…
very much so
Even the Eagles decided it’s not worth the trouble, and they probably have THE best QB suited for it. Frankly, I’m surprised the Dolphins had as much success as they did with it.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
I'm willing to concede that our offense could improve in certain areas.
For example, we should have been much better at gaining big yards on the play action.
But let’s be real. The two plays per game that we would have used the Wildcat would have had almost zero effect in terms of making the offense better.

Nobody would pay any attention to Schaub split out wide, if that’s even part of the design.
If we really needed a mobile QB to be part of this scheme (and it’s quite debatable that we do), he should do the running after he goes through the progression. Point being, there should be a progression, first of all.
Also
How good of an idea is it to put the key to your offense outside of the pocket where if anything goes wrong he can take a huge beating? It makes no sense.

^ Worst possible Wildcat formation. EVAR.
I agree w/ your points tGC.
But I disagree with the assumption that the normal QB has to be on the field while running a WC formation/play. It has been done (especially in year-1 of the WC), but it seems to be the less used formation now…with the true QB coming to the sideline for that play.
I don’t have a problem with lining up (just a few plays per game) with no Schaub, as a pure running play. Yes, you are 100% tipping your hat regarding the run/pass play selection. But the player replacing the QB for the play (RB2) gives an extra diversion & blocker on the field versus a normal running play.
And if you really want to have a little fun with the defense to keep the CBs & Safeties honest, then you send a WR around the backside for either a real or fake end-around. Hell, they should probably go ahead and send a WR from each side so that one can run or fake the reverse. This would certainly help out the announcers.
All that said, I am utterly and completely against targeting a player that is specifically to be on the field for only a maximum of 3-5 offensive snaps per game. But I believe that was your original point, as well.
If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?
Would you care to explain to the group, what the difference is, between an “end around” and a “reverse”?…
If your salary as an NFL or NCAA announcer is high enough...
Then there is in fact no difference between them.
If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?
VY as a wide receiver makes me laugh
Like he’s got the discipline to run routes? He’d be like Randy Moss without the skills.
