Texans Down 'N Dirty: Enjoying the Offseason Edition
Increasingly, my sports calendar revolves around the NFL. I grew up playing baseball, but I can't get into the MLB like I used to because of the lack of spending parity. The NBA regular season doesn't mean much, and I grew up in Texas so I don't get into hockey either. There are many reasons for the popularity of football; every game in the regular season matters, they turn Sundays into an event, and every team has as much chance of winning the Super Bowl as any other. That popularity is in jeopardy, but this isn't a lockout speech so I'll save that for another day.
The problem with loving football so much is that you have to find entertainment in the offseason. Some people get into the sports I was just discussing. Some people have other hobbies that keep them entertained. I personally get into the draft and all the events that lead up to it. Whatever your preference is, you have to have something to tide you over until next August when training camp hopefully begins. To see how people entertain themselves, as well as more draft links from the Senior Bowl if that is your cup of tea, follow the jump.
Arian Foster and Vonta Leach are entertaining themselves in Hawaii preparing to play in the Pro Bowl. Here's a video that shows how grueling a process it is for Foster.
The regular season isn't over for all Texans fans. As Alan Burge writes, the Bull's Eye Tailgaters will be competing in the Bing National Tailgating Championship at the Super Bowl. They're a great representation of the city and Texans fans. Good luck, guys.
John McClain of the Chronicle entertains himself by prognosticating who the Texans will pick in the first round. Daniel Charles shares why he feels McClain's rationale that the Texans will select Von Miller is all wrong.
Speaking of guessing who the eleventh pick will be, Stephanie Stradley gave all of her Twitter followers 140 characters to tell her who the Texans should take and why, and compiled those results.
Now onto my entertainment, the Senior Bowl. Here are the practice reports:
Wes Bunting/National Football Post.
Tony Pauline/Draft Insider (North).
Joe Everett/NFL Draft Bible.
Shane Hallam/Draft Countdown (North).
Adam Caplan/Fox Sports.
Patrick/Texans Tribune (North I South).
There were also a couple of position specific notes:
Tony Pauline writes why the Cowboys probably won't take USC Tackle Tyron Smith and what teams like Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick.
Wes Bunting breaks down what he's seen from the quarterbacks at the Senior Bowl.
Rob Rang reports that VT corner back Rashad Carmichael has a high ankle sprain and will not play in the game.
Matt Bowen of the National Football Post ranks the safeties at the Senior Bowl according to his opinion.
Dan at Mocking the Draft details the wide receivers at the Senior Bowl and explains why there is not that much separation between some of them.

Peace, Love, Chicken Grease....
That was cool. I hate this time of year. Mainly because my sports life, outside my kids is 98% NFL, 1% MLB, .4% NBA and .6% NCAAB.
So right now I’ll consume myself in the BallBratz Select Softball, and the Celtics of. little dribbles and check here daily to see what’s up.
GO TEXANS!!!!
Our time will come...
I am telling y'all this is who we want.
Phil Taylor DL Baylor 6034 337 33 ¾ 10 3/4
Monday Practice Notes: The massive interior defender ate up double-teams and clogged the middle of the line. He also displayed a very nice swim move while rushing the passer.
Tuesday Practice Notes: A bull in the middle of the line, Taylor gets good push and can move offensive linemen off their spot. He did need to recognize pressure more quickly and fight against it.
Wednesday Practice Notes: Taylor started the day by blowing up the first run play of practice. He then was washed down the line the next play. He was hard to handle in the middle, but his handplay is suspect.
I agree
I’m all about Taylor as the second round pick, to the point that I’d be ok with the Texans trading up into the early second round if they felt it was necessary to get him.

only if he plays on one year contracts
once he gets paid he will become lazy. every report out there mentions this so there must be some merit
where are the links for this allen?
I really think we should take taylor in 2nd trade up if need be. there are so many team running 3-4 now.
Was it lazy or tired?
If the latter, you tell me of a 330 lb dude that doesn’t get tired after a couple of plays.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
I'm not sure about his laziness but
we won’t be able to sign any rookie picked as high as he will be to a one year deal. I like the idea of getting him, it satisfies the NT need as well as my need to see a Baylor Bear on the roster. An alternative is to make it an incentive laden deal so that he has to play well to make the good money.

Soccer is still going on overseas
But it’s now down to just that and NBA and frankly the Rockets aren’t very good. The EPL team I’m following is having a down year, too.
Should be a Spurs fan!

LB Coach
So will he coach outside or inside? Or will he coach all the positions?
Bored and haven't taken a shot at Methopotamia in a while........

We had a giant marshmallow NT.
His name was Frank Okam.

From your last Down n' dirty I found this tidbit.
Sione Fua (DL) Stanford, 6’2’, 306 lbs.
Didn’t see much of him yesterday, but today he has been abusing lineman with his quick takeoffs and overall strength. He is very intriguing as a player and can hold his own on the inside. I think he is a player to take note of.
What’s his draft grade right now? Cause this guy sounds interesting, I just need to know more about what role he would best fit in.
We should strive to live like the moon. Vibrant, not as our own light, but as the carriers of something greater than us. - Arian Foster
3rd round....probably will rise to the 2nd
IMHO, he’s a Ratliff clone….smaller than a traditional NT but he’s Incredible Hulk strong.
Definitely a clogger as opposed to a gap-shooter….but I would LOVE to see him and EMFM rotating at the nose in 2011. It’d be quite the change up of speed and power to really keep a center on his toes.
"Lord, beer me strength."
And yeah,
he’s my favorite of the NT group so I’m a tad higher on him than average, but I A) love his strength B) love his motor and C) know he comes from a well coached program
"Lord, beer me strength."
So he is a thick 306?
Good good, Him and Phil Taylor sound decent. I just don’t like what I hear about Phil’s supposed laziness.

It's all weightspeed nowadays... not just assmass.
And I guess I need to read more critiques, because I thought the knock on Taylor was that he got tired after several plays, not that he was lazy. Please link to one that says this, if you have it handy.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
I have heard laziness but it could be getting tired.
I dunno. I think it was in one of the down n dirty links that some scout mentions giving him a bunch of one year deals.

Was that a scout, or just a commenter here?
Big difference.
Anyways, a funny comment I just read on him in my search:
•Phil Taylor moves well for his size and has displayed strength at the point of attack and moves well for his size.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
I did find one that noted the possibility of laziness and effort being ?
Mainly due to his weight staying “down” to 335, but I saw it.

Offseason
College Lacrosse is my escape for the NFL offseason. Lots of Rivalries in D1 lacrosse make it a pretty exciting sport to follow.

Interesting Timing
I wonder where he winds up
I am totally optimistic about the Texans new season - at least until the first of the 4 or 2 (if any) preseason games

I like this scenario.
Let kubes frank away another yr, get canned…..let Fisher rest up and get bored, Texans hire Fisher for the 2012 season.
Just my $.02
Even duct tape can't fix stupid
