Frank Bush gone...
All defense coaches gone.
Special Teams coach Marciano stays. Kubiak stays, Dennison stays, all offensive position coaches stay (unless signed by another team).
We won’t find out the new DC until “a fair process of interviews, evaluations and discussions with current coaching staff has been properly and exhaustedly conducted.” At which point, we’ll find out it’s someone we all hate, despise, and absolutely do not want coaching our defense (worse than Bush? it’s possible!).
Just my 0.000000000002 cents worth.
Don't kid yourself
It’s wade Phillips. Deal is already done if I had to bet on it. We will make the playoffs next year, but then go backwards again the year after. It’s the curse of Tony boselli

In a perfect world....
Bring in a new GM, VP or temp consultant like Tony Dungy, Bill Parcells or Jimmy Johnson.
Hire Wade Phillips as DC.
Get some big name players on defense from FA once CBA is done.
Don’t screw up the draft.
Do those four things and the fan base will pop back into “hope and high expectations” mode for 2011.
Uncomfortably numb......thanks to the Texans
Well, Mr McNair has been talking to Bum Phillips.

Hey i'll always be a Bum Philips fan
IF only because of thisone line
(when asked by Bob Costas why he takes his wife on all of the Oilers’ road trips) “Because she’s too ugly to kiss goodbye.”
Why?
Because 87 year old guys who haven’t coached in 25 years don’t have their pulse on the game?
In other news, Bum recommends releasing disco 45s in order to improve team morale.

For the record, I’m not accusing Mario and Smith of whining for discussing their concerns about playing in a 3-4. However, I expect players that have already been financially secured for the rest of their lives to adapt, willingly, to whatever changes a new DC brings in. Too often they forget that they’re part of a very select few that are blessed to become super rich, at a very young age, for playing a game.

I'm sorry
but I don’t see how them having been accused of taking plays off at some point in their career has anything to do with those quotes other then you really just can’t stop bitching about everything. Not like you are alone in that behavior, but two guys come out and make an honest assesment of their ability to play a position other then the one they currently are, and are called whiners because of it? COME ON.

On that note
What’s your take on that changing with a new staff? I mean, Kollar is staying. He should get his due credit for the success that Williams and Smith have had to this point under his tutelage, but isn’t it also fair that he accept some blame if they were guilty…..and I’m not saying they were…… of mailing it in at times?
Kollar is the most hard nosed coach we have on the entire staff, so if he’s not able to get more out his D-line then who’s going to? Phillips isn’t exactly a disciplinarian that demands accountability. In my opinion it would have to be on Kubiak, which is fine by me because I think he needs to have the heat kept on him to make this thing happen.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
I'm 50-50 on Kollar
I think they must have OK’d Kollar with Wade first or he would have been out the door with the others.
That's what im scared of.
That the texans might put a stipulation in his contract that if things don’t work out next season with Kubes as HC and him as DC, he’ll take over as our new HC.
"Eff you mothereffer!"
-Bernard Pollard-
(Insert Facemelting scene from Indy Jones)
When a child asks you what a douchebag is, just say Cortland Finnegan.
Gary Kubiak MUST succeed, or that's exactly what'll happen
Mark my words. I hope I have to eat crow someday for ever bringing it up, but it’s a very real possibility that’s been playing through my mind ever since the rumor first broke.
Phillips is a very good DC, so I’m confident he can help elevate this team to a playoff level in the shortest time possible, but I’d be a liar if I said I’m confident we can actually contend for a championship with Kubillips leading the way.
Instead, what I fear is a 1-2 year stretch of more mediocrity, ending with Kubiak being fired and Phillips being promoted to HC. After all, let’s not forget that Wade is one of Bob’s guys…..good ol’ boy circle of trust.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
one more point to add
I’m tired of the mediocre shit. Settling for a playoff birth is not acceptable to me anymore. Not only do we have to be able to make it, we have to be able to advance when we get there. That’s a totally different ballgame that neither of these coaches has proven they can handle yet, when given the opportunity to be a head coach.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
Fans are free to set their expectations however they see fit...
But it would be wise to bear in mind that your expectations have no bearing on what actually happens and the higher you set them, the less likely you are for a happy outcome.
My hopes would be for the following incremental improvements year-over-year:
2011 – make playoffs (assuming there is a season)
2012 – make playoffs and win n games
2013 – make playoffs and make a serious run at /win a SuperBowl
"velocitas eradico"
Not exactly what I was going for
I’m not saying we have to go deep in the playoffs next year. What I mean is our future team needs to be able to advance when we get to the playoffs, every year if we’re so fortunate.
The point being that as head coaches, neither Kubiak or Phillips have done that. Kubiak for obvious reasons, but Phillips has had his chances. It doesn’t make me confident…..just because we make the playoffs doesn’t mean we’ll have a true winner with these coaches.
I truly hope I’m wrong, but they’ll have to prove it.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
Ah... I misunderstood...
…and after 9 years of no playoffs I’m just wanting to clear that hurdle before setting the bar higher.
Go Texans.

the blame game...
Bob McNair ultimately is to blame. back when they fired Richard Smith, they KNEW that the defense was shit. instead of doing a better job of trying to hire a great defensive coordinator (Gregg WIlliams comes to mind) we went with a good ol’ boy, Frank Bush.) i know that koobz rick smith somebody is in charge of hiring/firing coaches, and that was a BAD move. the only reason our defense looked so good last season is the majority of the teams we played SUCKED. i honestly feel that a solid defense, coupled with our above average offense, will be enough next season to get us to the playoffs.

There will always be players who want to work one scheme (3-4 or 4-3) or another...

Kubes met with every player
Briefly, all free agents and otherwise. Kubes convo with Polly was good going into a free agent offseason. We’ll see what happens, when pressed about wanting him back “Polly’s always done his job.”
I think the decision to go with 4-3 or 3-4 will dictate if Bonecrusher stays
4-3, No way he stays due to his lack of cover skills
3-4, He might work in a Phillips-like system as the exclusive blitzing LB

Lots of important things to get done this offseason. OD’s come a long way, and OD wants to be part of Texans as the Texans want him back.

Kubiak on Cushing and his drop-off
Brian missing the time hurt him. When you miss 4 weeks, you can’t just bounce right back and be the same guy. DeMeco’s injury hurt him a great deal, because we had to get him uncomfortable for a few weeks. He wasn’t able to adjust, and so it didn’t add up to what he did last season. He’s still a huge presence, and he did what we asked. His effort was as good as the year previous.
On delegating more of the play-calling
Kubes will evaluate himself also. He wants to hire a guy who has a lot of experience on the D side. He wants or likes the idea of a previous HC.
On whether Ray will be back (DB Coach)
Ray’s talked about retirement, and Ray is helping the evaluation.
On bringing back Mark Anderson
Kubiak says Mark did well, and they’d like to have him back.
It was a tossup.
I think it was kind of 50/50 on Polly vs. Anderson. I think they want Anderson back, and are leaving the Polly decision up to whomever the new DC is.
he spoke about pollard earlier...
both him and rick smith both had good stuff to say about him. he should be back.

To summarize my thoughts on what Kubiak said about a new DC.
He has input, and the ultimate veto because McNair wants Kubiak to have someone he is comfortable with running the other side of the ball. Kubiak wants a DC with some HC experience to help Kubiak along with decisions, and he wants someone he can ultimately trust to make the right decisions. Whomever they hire will be given almost unilateral personnel decisions on that side of the ball, meaning who we bring in is up to them. The team and F.O. are committed to improving the defense, and will do their best to bring in anybody the new DC feels is needed or warranted, and other changes would be made at the discretion of the new DC. A switch 3-4 or staying 4-3 doesn’t matter, they want to do what’s best for the team while making sure the scheme itself fits the team and players best.

Matt Leinart
They’d like to get him back. Kubiak said he has tons of potential, tremendous upside. Leinart came in and did exactly what he needed to, and worked as hard as anyone. They understand he’s opened a lot of eyes this season, a la Sexy Rexy, and if he goes elsewhere they wish him the best. They do think he has the “It Factor” and could be a superstar in this league given the right opportunities and right coaching.
Mark Anderson
He played well for the team. They’d love to get him back. He did exactly what they asked, and worked his tail off to do so. They appreciated the hard work and effort, and if they can get him back they will.
Bernard Pollard
He played pretty well this season in Kubiak’s mind. He came in as a guy dropped from another team, and showed he still has the ability to play and play well. It seemed like Kubiak was leaving this particular personnel decision and FA signing up to the new DC though, as he refused to say “we want him back”.
they just fired his position coach
and Kollar is still there, so maybe thats why MA got more “want him back” love than Pollard.
