Bob McNair Did the Right Thing by Keeping Gary Kubiak

Most Texans' fans were pretty upset late last week when they heard that Gary Kubiak would be brought back for his sixth season with the Texans. For that reason, the following viewpoint will not be a popular one. People who wanted the coach to be ousted, should instead, direct their ire at Rick Smith and Bob McNair.

When Kubiak took the job in 2006, both sides of the ball were in shambles, but the primary issue was with an offense that was known for getting two yards a carry and throwing three yard slant routes to Andre Johnson. Now, not only is the offense a viable one, it's one of the most potent and balanced in the league. Since he's an offensive coach, he has succeeded with this team in his area of expertise.

However, if you want to hold him responsible for hiring his friends and people with which he's familiar, especially on the defensive side of the ball, I can certainly understand that. A case can easily be made that has led to the abomination that is known as the Texans' defense. Before you do that, though, put yourself in his position.

Let's say your boss comes to you and says, "I'm giving you full control over who you bring in to help run your department." If you came from a successful organization, you'd surround yourself with people who you've worked with in the past that helped you succeed. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just human nature.

If the business were to fall apart in the aforementioned scenario, your boss would be just as much in the wrong as you. After all, he took a "hands off" approach and hoped that you would get it right.

After the Dom Capers era, where hiring friends and refusing to fire them even after cataclysmic results was a serious issue, you would think that Bob McNair would have learned his lesson. He doesn't have to be Jerry Jones, but he has to be some form of check to Kubiak's balance. Allowing Kubiak to name his general manager and all of his coaching staff, when he had never done so before, was a surprise coming from a businessman as decorated as McNair.

Instead, McNair should have seen that Kubiak was a first-time head coach that had no experience in building a staff or personnel department, and brought in an experienced general manager to assist him. Remember, his best draft came with Charley Casserly doing all of the leg work, so Kubiak could make informed decisions.

But no, the owner of the Texans decided to step aside and allow an unproven head coach to run the entire organization. This led to the hiring of one of the worst general managers in football, Rick Smith.

Like Kubiak, Smith was hardly qualified for the job. In Denver, he had very little input on the draft. His specialty was finding players out of the CFL, Arena, and other professional leagues, and he has done a good job picking up street free agents for the Texans. His draft record, however, has been anything but good.

The 2006 draft that Kubiak presided over has since produced five Pro Bowls and three All-Pro selections. Four players, Mario Williams, DeMeco Ryans, Eric Winston, and Owen Daniels are cornerstones of the club. Throw in David Anderson, a steady fourth receiver, and you have the makeup of a draft that is considered by many to be one of the best in the league over the past ten years.

Since then, the results have been much more disappointing. In the four drafts in which Rick Smith and his staff have been involved, he has only one Pro Bowl to his credit, and that was from Brian Cushing, who was considered to be a no-brainer at the 15th pick. Conversely, most of his picks have been either underachievers or players that were overdrafted.

Many members of the media claim that Kubiak chooses offensive players and Smith makes the calls on defensive players. So, take a look at some of the defensive players Smith has drafted from 2007 to 2009:

2007 - Amobi Okoye (1st), Fred Bennett (4th), Brandon Harrison (5th)
2008 - Antwaun Molden (3rd), Xavier Adibi (4th), Frank Okam (5th), Dominique Barber (6th)
2009 - Brice McCain (6th), Troy Nolan  (7th)

The only good defensive players he's taken are Cushing (1st, 2009) and Glover Quin (4th, 2009).

Thus, if Bob McNair were to blame someone, Kubiak should be third on the list behind himself and Smith. If he was going to make further changes on "Black Monday", it should have been to send the general manager packing and bring in someone who would truly know how to do the job.

Of course, he's not going to fire himself, he's the owner. And if you have a smart comment about that statement, put yourself in McNair's shoes.

I agree man

Maybe this year was a wake up call that gets Kubiak out of his comfortable zone it seemed he was locked in. We’ve all seen a first-time coach leave a team and do better in the second one. I think some of the reason is they are never knocked out of their comfort zone. So this could possibly play like a firing. But what would it take to get Smith gone? Hmm….

Randy, in my opinion, I think that McNair told Kubiak that the new DC would have to come from outside the Denver realm. That’s why you’re hearing some of the names you are. Of course, Kubiak isn’t stupid, so I think he probably realized that beforehand.

As for getting rid of Smith, that’s going to be a hard sell. The only way I see it happening is if eventually, the new DC (especially if it’s an experienced one) and/or Kubiak see that he’s incompetent and they get McNair to sign off on it.

But Wade is from the Denver Realm

And he is likely the guy

I am totally optimistic about the Texans new season - at least until the first of the 4 or 2 (if any) preseason games

That’s true Barry, but not in the way we’ve become accustomed. Wade brings more than just the “Denver way” to the job.

Great read, and rec'd

I agree. I have pretty much been in the “keep Kubiak, fire Smith” camp for many of the reasons you so eloquently stated here. I still hope we get someone in to evaluate and mentor above the GM level.

Indeed!

Great movie, and Alex Karras had some other fun movie roles. I figured it would be a good forum handle for a football blog. Although now I sort of wish I tossed in my real name after getting to know so many folks.

I have to admit

That I’ve been a big fan of Kubiak, and liked Smith – until I recently learned more about Smith’s role. I was on the cusp of having to agree with Kubiak leaving, even though I really liked what he’s done with our offense and would hate to see him leave. Bringing in a good, experienced DC will – in my opinion – allow us to keep Kubiak AND fix our woes. Great article!

Thanks, DD. I hope you’re right as well, and I really hope the DC that comes in will have a say in what he needs. I don’t think that he should have final say, but if he’s experienced, he should know the type of player he needs, which would give Smith more direction.

I was just thinking about the recent interview Kubiak did on Monday

and in there he was asked about Foster and did he see this type of success coming, etc.

Kubiak talked about another great running back he worked with who was once drafted in the 6th round and slowly worked his way through camp and then exploded on the scene to become a premier NFL back (Terrell Davis).

That almost put a sparkle in my eye when I heard it. I felt a LOT better about Kubiak and wondered if he haunts the blogs out here (doubt it) and if he saw my post from midway through this season on a comparison of TD and Foster:

Hard to find another guy in with a pro-kubiak stance nowadays. Which I don’t understand because he’s still our head coach.

Why are we arguing?

Bob McNair is still the owner. Rick Smith is still the GM. Gary Kubiak is still the HC. The only thing changing is Wade Phillips and his staff is replacing Frank Bush and his staff. Same players will be playing plus/minus draftees, cuts, FAs and injuries.

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

this is a blog and I’m an argumentative bastard.

The shiny hasn’t rubbed off of “immutable”… or this would be my new one…

Go, tGC, go…

Although, from the enthusiasm of your response to what I thought was a fairly innocuous thought-piece and River’s seconding and rec’ing of it, I’m getting the feeling that there is some backstory or subplot that I’m missing. In any case, it makes for good theater and again, keep up the good work on the sound bites…

A guy at work the other day said “Stuff happens whether you know stuff or not…” and I found that kinda’ amusing, so my entertainment threshold is admittedly low. I’m a standup comic’s best friend.

Thanks for finding the truly unintentional inspiration in my comments.

I’m really not trying to attack the author as a person or anything. I want to make sure that when someone on this blog makes an argument, it is backed by sound logic and facts. That’s what makes this blog what it is.* I’ll attack the shit out of a weak argument but very rarely will I attack someone personally and then only when it is some desperately deserving Titans troll.

Likewise, I welcome people challenging anything I write as long as there aren’t any ad hominem attacks.

So, I re-read both of the articles...

…and I see what you guys are getting at regarding the “fact fitting” to some extent… I think that on my first read through (and almost on my second read through) I focused on the first half of the article and was kinda’ glazed over when I got to the details about the defensive draft picks.

In general I’ve been so happy that Smithiak isn’t the flaming dooshnozzle ball-of-suck with regard to talent acquisition (when compared to the Domcarrsserly era) that I’ve thought of them as effective and haven’t worried that much about it.

However I’ve probably been influenced over the last couple of months by the non-stop bombardment of criticism aimed at the organization to the point that I’m not really thinking that critically about accusations against Rick Smith. I do prefer to hope that the problem was scheme and not talent, so I’ll just reserve judgment on Rick Smith until I see what he and Wade can put together on the defensive side of the oball.

Oh… and I realized that it wasn’t a matter of “either/or” on the signature so now it’s all tGC, all the time. ;-)
