Burge: Key Injured Players Should Be Ready To Go Next Season
Given all of the MLB ILB DeMeco Ryans injury concerns, I think a lot of people should take a look at this article by the Examiner's Alan Burge for some information on the recovery process.

I don't buy any of this.
Of those guys, I see all coming back without much problem except the ones we were already concerned about: DeMeco Ryans and Connor Barwin, who will both be absolutely crucial to the transition to a 3-4.
I'm inclined to trust a doctor...
I especially buy the fact that it depends on how they’re rehabbing. Look at Dunta….didn’t rehab hard (IIRC), didn’t get into OTAs or training camps or preseason……
OD? He rehabbed but missed all summer.
Meco and Barwin are both putting in the work and should be there in the summer. I still want Houston to get depth behind them, but I feel more optimistic about their returns as of right now.

Thats just crazy talk tDc
we all obviously know more about this then some fanshy schmansy doctor.

I trust a doctor
but not in this case.
The article mentions “draft strategy” and it is the Texans team doc. I trust the players that Kubillips actually drafts will reveal the health of these key players.
The rest is just potential smokescreen in a competitive FA/draft environment.
the tenth time is a charm
True
That draft strategy comment did seem a little awkward, but I don’t know what context the question was asked so it’s hard to say. I think a doctor would be more worried about going on record with bogus medical opinions. There’s no gain from lying about his profession because he’d just be called out on it, don’t you think?
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
Yeah, thats what I'm thinking.
Plus, its their reputation also, as medical professionals. Though, I’m not entirely sure that it’d matter, since they’re employed by the Houston Texans.

Yeh, I'll believe when I see their sweaty asses in the starting lineup in game 1
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
Please
Being the Texans team Doctor is as lucrative a marketing scheme as he can have. Having a player not come back on the original time scale from a major injury isn’t going to do a thing to his reputation. Not toeing the company line gets him in much more hot water.

They both got hurt early in the season
That’s critical. They were both able to have surgery and get it taken care of with plenty of time to start the healing and rehab process. I trust a doctor’s word on the chances for full recovery, especially the ones that have seen it enough times to be considered “experts.”
So you’re right about rehab, and knowing the character of both of those guys I’d say the chances are pretty high that they’ll be able to come back strong. It may be slower than some people would like, but I think Ryans and Barwin still haven’t played their best football for the Texans.
Our training staff has been pretty good about getting guys back from serious injury. Dunta’s was scary, so the fact that he was able to come back at all is pretty impressive. And OD has had, what like three ACL operations now? It took him a while to get back to full speed this time, but that’s because he added a fractured knee cap, and then rushed his come back and screwed his hammy up in the process.

I think it's fairly odd...
for a doctor who is (as far as I know) not treating any of these guys to make sweeping statements like “yeah, Achilles injuries heal blah blah blah.” LaVar Arrington disagrees with his assessment there. Without seeing the medical charts, the specific injury, the injury history of each player, etc., it just seems bizarre to take his word as anything beyond a doctor telling you “yeah, the flu is rarely fatal these days.”

The doc gave some in depth detail on 'Dre
and the long term concerns for his ankle, so I don’t get the perspective that he was pulling any punches. The reference to draft impact was likely part of a question he was responding to or just the fact that he is intelligent enough to realize that is now the key vantage point most people will consider relative to injured players heading into the off season.
I feel pretty good about it really.
Uncomfortably numb......thanks to the Texans
This guy is on 610 every week....
The draft comment was no doubt part of the question Vandermeer asked. He’s legit on explaining how things are done.
I have faith that Demeco and Barwin will come back strong and Mario too.
or maybe I’m just drankin’ the drank.
Seriously, I listen to him all the time I really feel he give real answers, not just what we want to hear.
GO TEXANS!!!!
Our time will come...

Better yet
Does it allow Lou Holtz to make sense? Or does he still sound like a drunk, street-corner old man who’s had one too many kerosene tonics?
A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.
