Open Thread: Wild Card Saturday

First, we're treated to Saints-Seahawks at 2:30 p.m. CST this afternoon. That'll be followed by Jets-Colts at 7 p.m. CST. I'm still waiting to hear back from the NFL about what time your Houston Texans play.

In the meantime, this is your thread for Wild Card Saturday. Enjoy.

The sad thing is

I’m not sure we could beat the seahawks unless it was a meaningless game.

But with our ferocious defense next year we will be awesome!!

I’ll take the saints and colts

The violence rhetoric that politicians use is going to be dangerous

In this country. This is just a first example.

No matter which side of the fence you are on politically

They all use the word “target” when discussing/propagandizing districts to go after in an election.

I really don’t see the correlation here. Strange coincident?…sure. But blaming any political poster for what happened this morning is simply wreckless.

If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?

just an example of how nasty a lot of the rhetoric is

I don’t think anyone can reasonably blame one poster, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to wonder if the persistently aggressive and hostile tone popular in politics right now contributed.

When you look at that along with Sharron Angle's "second amendment remedies"

Orwell was a socialist

but strongly anti-communist

The climax has the communist leadership (the pigs) becoming literally indistinguishable from the capitalist elite the animals had rebelled against (the humans).

URSS had its "golden years" with him on command.

It wasn’t so “golden” to the people, but economically it was. And the economy didn’t change while he was in command.

And I know communism is far from perfection. It’s pointless to defend any dictatorship, no matter if it was extremely right-winged (like Hitler’s and Mussolini’s) or extremely left-winged on paper (like Stalin’s).

by JustAJ on Jan 8, 2011 4:25 PM CST up reply actions

Actually I think you have that backwards

Stalin stood for the principles of communism, the difference between him and Lenin/Trotsky and most of the Bolsheviks is he was more willing to do the actual dirty work involved in establishing a communist-style government.

Lenin/Trotsky were more just political theorists who were less interested in running a government. Stalin’s genocide was a part of that “dirty work.”

Fascism, however, has no political ideals, it is merely a method of concentration of power and is capable of showing itself in different political beliefs. In Hitler’s case, fascism arose out of his hyper-nationalist ideology.

I am a visionary, I am a genius, and now I am angry! Now help me find my pants!

I wouldn't say he was worse than Hitler or Mussolini

As far as I know, most people he had ordered to murder was traitors of his regime, long time enemies, and people who tried to conjure against him. Mussolini did the same. Hitler was worse because he had killing as a political view, as his philosophy. And that’s what he’s done.

Why in the hell did so many people think Seattle would win this?

They are in the bottom 4th of the league.

The only teams worse are IMO are Carolina, Arizona, San Fran, Denver, Cincy, and Buffalo.

One thing I don't understand

since he left, we’ve constantly been looking for the ‘next stokley.’ his play in both Seattle and Denver would seem to say that, while he’s not the best slot receiver in the league right now, he’s still got something left in the tank…. And he’d be better than, say, Blair White right now. Why did we never bring him back? Not like his contracts are huge.

speaking of wrong...

Gonzo was hurt in the very first game of the year. And then out for the year in the first game he came back. So obviously SOMEONE was hurt when Stokley was available.

by SpazMo on Jan 8, 2011 5:03 PM CST up reply actions

He was cut on September 4th and signed on September 28th

So one injured wide receiver. Still had Wayne, Garcon, Collie, White, and Clark. Why would we sign someone who couldn’t help on special teams in that situation?

this is fun

actually, 3 WRs were hurt when Stokley was available.

Garcon missed a lot of time early in the year with a hamstring and Collie had an injured foot/ankle.

by SpazMo on Jan 8, 2011 5:06 PM CST up reply actions

Collie was not hurt this year

Until the Washington game which was in October. Garcon missed his first game this year the day before Stokley was signed. So to replace an outside receiver we sign an old injury-prone slot receiver? Makes sense. This is fun.

Sure

Show me the proof that he was hurt. Was it when he had 12 catches and 171 yards against Denver? I remember that. I thought he was going to die from the pain of scoring those two touchdowns. Somehow he fought through to get another touchdown the next week.

Austin Collie was in a walking boot for the first month+ of the year

and was missing practice a bunch, but trying to fight through it.

His touchdown the ‘next week’ was his only catch, against Jax. he wasn’t able to play/do much.

by SpazMo on Jan 8, 2011 5:15 PM CST up reply actions

So we had to find a backup for a player who was leading the league in yards, receptions, and TDs?

He clearly wasn’t hurt too bad. Who would we cut? Someone who could contribute on special teams for some old receiver?

I'm merely stating he was injured

again you poor excuse for a head injury, I never said to sign him during this season. You brought it up, and then, incorrectly, probably because you’re too busy thinking of your next obnoxious reference to sex, drugs, or alcohol, said that we had no injured WRs. We actually had 3.

People: “Oh now I really want to know! You’re so cool, Spaz! I can’t wait until you leave for 2 months because people aren’t giving you enough attentions!”

here's the problem, though

even for the times he’s messed up, at least he knows the calls and signals. Link is still a rookie, and hasn’t started for several games. This could get Manning KILLED, not just hit.

biggest problem with this game

is that even if the Saints come back and win (which i DONT want to happen), there will be no internal pressure to change the system so that, at the very least, a 7-9 team isn’t hosting a play off game (which I’m against, your mileage may vary)

Oh god this is absolutely juicy.

I am so loving this complete fail fest with the Saints atm.

The former SB champs are down to a sub-.500 playoff team with a double digit advantage in the lines.

Downfield blocking by the runnner!

He broke like 3 tackles around his ankles, and had 2 massive stiff arms all in one huge run.

I see a lot of that in our games. We’ve installed a rule nationally to ping a 15 yard Unsportmanlike Conduct on anyone who makes contact from the victory formation. We have so many fights cause of plays like that.

Depends on the other game.

If the Pack beat Philly, Pack is the lowest seed.

if GB wins, then they’d play the the number 2 seed. if the Iggles win, they’d play the number 1 seed.
