Texans Trade for Derrick Mason

First saw it on Ben Tate's Facebook page.  Then I googled it and saw this:

http://www.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/sports/nfl/11011-texans-trade-for-derrick-mason

What are y'all's thoughts?  Good? Bad? Does it depend on the draft pick? Is it nice to have someone to get Jacoby off the field?  I haven't seen him this year, but I'm okay with it honestly.  Mason is a good player. Worth the risk.

I think if they were going to give up a draft pick they could have done a little better

Mason is playing his final season. He’s kinda washed up. I mean he’s probably gonna be our slot guy, but I would have liked to get someone younger.

I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.

Agree

It is conditional though. I doubt it’s higher than a sixth. I’m surprised we didn’t try to sign Houshmanzadeh.

From what I've heard

Mason is a better pick up than Houshmanzadeh would have been.

by LedTexan on Oct 11, 2011 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions

How old is Housh?

Mason is 36 and has barely over 100 yards this year. I’m just wondering how washed up Housh has to be for him to not be signed yet and for him not to even be getting a look from us. He’s healthy right?

Don't know much about Houshmanzadeh

I do seem to remember that he was a huge bust in Seattle. Who knows, maybe he would have had a resurgence here, but the FO didn’t want him, and no one else seems to, either. Maybe UprootedTexan can give us more info on him.

Yeah he's healthy, but apparently he didn't like the Jets offense

I think he’ll work fine here. At least he can run crisp routes

Worth a shot I guess

Wonder what this means for Jacoby, though. Still, he has a lot of experience. We need that.

by LedTexan on Oct 11, 2011 9:19 PM CDT reply actions

You mean

We need to trade that experience to another team.

Good stats from 2010

Started 15/16 games
61 recs
800 yds
7 tds

I think I’d take that all freaking day from my #2

Big plus… Hasn’t missed many games over his career.

Wow

Didn’t realize he was that good last year.

me either

I was thinking this would have been a good pickup ten years ago, but with that 2010 production he’ll work out here in the rotation.

Bonus

He’s missed a grand total of 2 games since 2002. This year was the first year he hasn’t been a starter. Not like any rcvr is going to shine with the Jets….

Hell, we may have been better off signing him this past offseason rather than Jacoby Jones

Maybe Jacoby can still get eaten by a panda before they fly to Baltimore

Anyone got an afternoon available to drag him to the zoo?

Why would we need an afternoon?

Just stick a flier for free Jambalaya at the Houston zoo panda exhibit and he’ll go there on his own.

Speaks volumes about Jacoby

We knew Kubes was unhappy with JJ after the last game, Johnson/Mason/Walter would be a nice 3 WR set. Plus Mason was a victim of a poor offense this year.

I’m happy with it, glad to see the FO actually do something. Who are these guys???

by Big T33 on Oct 11, 2011 9:53 PM CDT reply actions

as a jets fan

i feel mason was more part of the problem leading to a poor jets offense than being a victim of said offense. that being said, schaub is lightyears ahead of sanchez at the moment. but you wont catch passes if you cant get open

Expectations

This move is simply to add depth and possibly to admit the Bryant Johnson/ Jacoby Jones are not up to snuff. He is a veteran receiver who is a good route runner and knows how to block.

by CoogmanSam on Oct 11, 2011 9:54 PM CDT reply actions

good luck with him guys

i’m not here trying to troll, just giving my assessment on mason as a jet fan. when jerrico cothery went to the steelers i went on their blog (as did many other jets fans) and praised JCo to the high heavens. i will not do the same here (and i doubt any other jets fan will either). mason is DONE. the guy has looked absolutely awful on the jets (i mean even way worse than the rest of the underperforming offense). he got benched for the first half of the pats game and its unclear whether it was for his poor play and inability to learn the offense – that’s the official stance – or that he was being a jerk and running his mouth too much. supposedly you only gave up a low round pick so i guess ts worth the risk but……

How is....

Any receiver going to look good with Sanchez throwing him the ball?

by RedRaider99 on Oct 11, 2011 9:57 PM CDT up reply actions

well said

however my point is that he still managed to look worse than anyone else out there. nobody else (especially the receiving corps) has done much of anything and yet he’s been the worst. they sat him in favor of rookie 5th rounder jeremy kerley and he caught a td against the pats

Santonio Holmes

Your #1 WR has 17 catches. Burress has 13 along with Mason. I think Mason will benefit more from Kubiak’s scheme.

perhaps

but he still appears to be unable to create any separation whatsoever (for that matter holmes has been awful this season as well)

by dabu7 on Oct 11, 2011 10:12 PM CDT up reply actions

thanks for sharing the info with us

I sure hope he can change his ways then. As far as separation, he couldn’t be worse than Jacoby. Set up in Andre Johnson’s spot in the plays, targeted 11 times and caught ONE pass for nine yards.

Also tapped the final nail in the coffin in our last game against the Raiders as Schaub scrambled to find an open receiver and Jacoby was pitching a tent behind a defensive player in the endzone…

hmmmm

it appears you guys have around as bad an opinion of jacoby as we have of mason. i guess its a fair trade off then…..

i actualy don't think he is done

and for the fact that we reportadly gave him up for a 7th rounder. there is absolutley no risk, so it’s definetly worth it. good luck with him

I really like this signing.

Mason is a good route runner, and has strong hands.

I expect to see him take over Jacoby as the #2 WR, especially since Jacoby has been incredibly inconsistent this year.

Kubes somewhat voiced his frustrations with JJ on SR610 on Monday, saying that he expects Jacoby to be a more consistent WR in his 5th year in the league. Also said that Jacoby’s performance vs. Oakland was somewhat disappointing.

Really hope Mason plays vs. Baltimore. Sick of seeing Jacoby as the #2. Just isn’t anything more than a good #3 WR and a decent return man.

I wouldn't even call him a good #3 WR

Hopefully we’ll replace him with Dwight Jones in the next draft

Jets fan here

Great trade for both sides (provided the draft pick is a fourth or fifth, I think). Although Andre Johnson is easily one of the top 3 receivers in the league, Mason should help fill that void for at least a game or two. He has decent hands and is easily disposable after the season, which I’m assuming will be a division victory and third seed playoff position. Mason can definitely help with that. Hopefully this trade works out—I’m rooting for Mason and the Texans!

by Maya on Oct 12, 2011 12:17 AM CDT reply actions

So do I, we need an upgrade over Jacoby Jones

Mason can fill the spot until we get someone in the next draft

Ravens fan here,

Mase is a very competitive receiver, IMO that’s a good thing he always wants the ball. He was never known for his speed but more so his precise rout running. Sometimes he lets his anger show to much, but IMO he wants nothing more than to win. He will be a good addition to an aggressive off. Mase is a good pick up as #2/3 rec. give him time to learn and this move should be a plus for Texans…..Good this weekend.

by Tatelli on Oct 12, 2011 12:37 PM CDT reply actions

Mason

Is a great pick up for the Texans. He will work extremely well with the tight-ends. Daniels and Dreesen clear out the middle, and Mason runs a cross or curl for an easy catch. He runs very precise routes, and is pretty physical (hard to jam). I think he will bring some much provided spunk to the Texans Offense. He’s already played the Ravens once, and was a Raven himself; hopefully he’s got some useful info for Kubes. To be honest, that cuddly golden retreiver from “Airbud” would be a better fit than Jacoby…

Swat and swim, dip and rip, twist and spin; just do whacha gotta do to light up that QB.
