Open Game Day Thread (Early Games):  10/16/11

While your Houston Texans won't kick off in Baltimore until 3:05 p.m. CDT, that doesn't mean you can't share your thoughts about the non-Texan contests that start at noon CDT.

The first thread for Texans-Ravens will post at 2:45 p.m. CDT.  Until then, consider this your open thread for today's early games and/or a depository for your thoughts on the Texans game as kickoff creeps closer.

WOOT!

Get to see the Eagles drop to 1-5 today.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

Yeah SF Detroit would have been my first choice.

Who do you get for the early game though? Cowboys are a late start.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

by Ethan Matz on Oct 16, 2011 11:57 AM CDT up reply actions

Philly and Washington

(I’m guessing) solely because they are NFC East rivals of said Cowboys.

by riversmccown on Oct 16, 2011 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions

I'd also rather see the Lions vs. 49ers

Hopefully with the Texans RB backfield FINALLY at full strength

The run game will show up today. If the Ravens shut it down like the Raiders did it will be another long day for the offense.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

it's time to fucking win

time for them Texans to be relevant and let the league know they need to prepare their anal cavity.

I would also love to see some of those “darling” teams to fall today. Bills, Lions(even if it’s a 9ers win)

Lions fans are arguably the most longsuffering in the NFL and only a few years ago went O-fer.

They get a pass from me. I hope they win every week. For those of you who aren’t sold on Smith, imagine if you had gotten stuck with Millen like they did.

Joe Flacco is pretty terrible

Its not outside of the realm of possibility that we pull off an upset. We don’t have too much trouble putting points up against good defenses.

by WhiskeyR on Oct 16, 2011 11:10 AM CDT reply actions

I disagree there.

Yeah he had a horrible game against the Jets but he’s not terrible overall.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

by Ethan Matz on Oct 16, 2011 11:11 AM CDT up reply actions

Flacco seems terrible because the Ravens don't play to his strength

which is the deep ball. First, Harbaugh’s offense is a tad conservative and passes stay in the medium to short range a lot. Second, they don’t have the deep speed guy that can run under anything. The guy has a howitzer grafted to his shoulder, but you would have to go back to college film to see it.

What you said was right though, if all things remain the same, he is going to continue to underachieve. Which, for today, is fine by me.

to be Matt Schaub. Which is an under-handed way of saying no, he can’t be counted on to win an important game. As long as he is behind center and Kubiak is on the sideline this is a mediocre team at best.

Dinged up Ravens CBs and all.

Depends on what kind of improvement he can show in the offense. I’d say 100 is bold but I wouldn’t be surprised if he approached competency and got 4-6 catches for 70 or so.

Sorry!

saving my last Buried Hatchet Stout for the Texans game. Almost 9 ABV its heavy and my choice of bleach today if we start getting killed by the Ravens. Gotta love the local brews.

If Kubiak is set on giving Manning & Jones a break on returns, we could see Sherrick McManis on kickoffs & Bryant Johnson on punts today

Can't be any worse.

Especially on punts.

Of course if we keep blocking like shit/blocking in the back it won’t matter.

McManis had 1 return last year for 25 yards.

He has the speed to be a viable returner on kickoffs.

Not sure about punts though.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

That rule is irritating.

The Detroit receiver clearly had possession and got both feet down. The only reason he lost it going down is because he was trying to whatever netting/wiring was on the ground behind the end-zone; you can see him clearly change his stride and use his other hand to accomplish this.

Bad referees are bad.
