Ravens 29, Texans 14: Post-Game Reaction

Here's your final box score. The Texans are now 3-3, and I imagine the cries of "Same old Texans!" will resonate anew this evening and for the rest of the week.

Not to be a contrarian or anything, but I'm not about to write off the season. If anything, I'm actually optimistic about your 2011 Houston Texans.

Star-divide

The Baltimore Ravens are a good football team. Your Houston Texans are not as good of a football team right now. Your Houston Texans are, however, plenty good enough to win the AFC South this year. If they do that, they make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. They'd even host a real live playoff game. For all the blather about Super-Bowl-Or-Bust, a division title and a playoff appearance would constitute the first notable achievement(s) this franchise has ever had. Right or wrong, that's legitimate progress.

Go ahead...tell me I'm settling for less than a Texans fan should, or that I'm drunk on Battle Red Kool-Aid. That's your right. Your Houston Texans have a real defense, and they have a dangerous offense, especially when Andre Johnson returns.  The Texans are going to win the AFC South, and they're going to host a playoff game.

3-3 at this point

Isn’t all that bad. The rest of the schedule is very winnable.

I didn’t get a chance to watch the whole game – just the end, so it is hard to comment much about the whole game yet.

Yea based on preseason predictions

I think most had us at 4-2 with everyone healthy

by Biggity B on Oct 16, 2011 6:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah I had this as a loss.

I had the Texans beating the Raiders so off by one game so far is not so bad. Especially since I didn’t see Mario and Andre going down.

It’s clear though Andre is more important to this team than Mario no offense to the big man because he was on pace for an absolute monster year.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

The thing that I hate about the losses this year

They were all winnable games. While we may have expected a loss to NO or Baltimore, for instance, we were in those games (and Oakland) until the end. Since going 16-0 in the regular season is an unreasonable expectation, there have to be some games you expect to lose, and historically the Texans would be blown out. This year, it’s not happening that way, so the losses are painful, as opposed to merely disappointing.

by Jonathan Fosburgh on Oct 16, 2011 7:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree

The losses hurt, but atleast the Texans were in those games…there were some games in the past that they weren’t in the same zip code as the game on the field.

Very real defense, minus Kareem Jackson, and Offense that when healthy, is among the top in the league.
Go Texans.

In Houston we've had Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon and now we are STUCK with Kareem "The Quarterback's Dream" Jackson. Look he just fell down again.

by BruiserTexans on Oct 16, 2011 10:54 PM CDT up reply actions

The Texans were in those games

Well, the other team was in the games that the Texans won, too. Isn’t that a recurring theme of the Kubiak era? Kubiak always coaches the Texans to be in the game. Then it’s just wherever the ball bounces, the ref calls go, who makes the big play, whatever… and that is the team that wins. Half the time it’s the Texans and half the time it’s the other team. The result is the Texans are always .500 with Kubiak coaching. It’s true. He is a .500 coach because he won’t take chances. He has no grasp on how to put another team away. It’s infuriating!

I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.

Weren't we only in the red-zone once?

Not much of a sample size, there. And I realize we’re missing Andre, but we tend to seriously overrate our offense. People overlooked the fact that our offense padded its stats against prevent defenses last year. Now we’re seeing what they’re capable of in a tight, back-and-forth game. And it ain’t much.

Here’s to hoping the return of one player solves all our woes. Unfortunately, I’m not sure that’s our biggest issue.

The Lions have been building to this for a while. Nothing immediate about it.

The 49ers were expected to win the division last year and are just now getting there. They’re not doing it any differently than they were last year.

The Bills won’t continue their success. They don’t have the defense for it and can be run over. Plus, Gailey was hired last year as well.

Six games isn’t a season.

by TexansDC on Oct 17, 2011 8:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Bro, Texans DC

All these arguments that HB is posing are very valid. And this idea that they’ve been “building this for years” in Detroit is a fallacy. They fired Matt Millen, brought in Schwartz, and since then, their drafting and free agent pickups that built their core under their regime can SOLELY be attributed to the coaching change. Look at the core of this talent: Stafford, Suh, Best, Delmas, Vanden Bosch, Chris Houston, Alphonso Smith, Gosder Cherilus(is a leftover of the Millen era), but other than that MOST of their talent and core can be attributed to Schwartz. And it took him only 3 seasons to compete in a VERY difficult division.

As far as Gailey, it’s his 2nd season, and the turnaround in THAT division is admirable as well. They can only do so much in so little time, but the point is: They DID it. We’ll see what the future holds, but there is room for growth in all these scenarios: Tampa Bay, Detroit, Buffalo, and SF. Whereas with Kubiak, it looks like we’ve hit our ceiling.

Don’t get me wrong, I WANT to be wrong. Unfortunately, I don’t think HB23 or those who hold the “Schaub and Kubiak need to go” belief are wrong.

by wiseonekms on Oct 17, 2011 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions

The thing with Buffalo is that they have a number of guys with huge chips on their shoulders who are playing to their max potential

Most of their starters are late round or undrafted players, so it’s not like they drafted well, but the are finding gems in the late rounds

by The Night Owl on Oct 17, 2011 11:40 AM CDT up reply actions

but

what does that have to do with winning? The idea is not to “hit on high draft picks,” the idea is to WIN. Whatever is getting it done, is important. Buffalo looks really good imo. I think they have a legit shot at the wild card.

by wiseonekms on Oct 17, 2011 11:41 AM CDT up reply actions

See, this is the problem.
We should be listed as ’Brutal" with those teams as well.

The incompetence of 6 years of this FO has made us a good to mediocre team. We should be FUCKING ELITE at this point. 3 years for Detroit’s rebuilding and they’re pretty goddamn close. Closer than we are.

We settle for winning our weak division (maybe) without the immortal Peyton Manning when we should’ve been kicking Rick Smith and Kubiak outta here 2years ago. The 07 and 09 drafts were absolutely dreadful and count as 2 wasted drafts relative to the talent that’s playing on other teams today.

We deserve better than this. I know this loss was likely, but FUCKING SHIT!!!!!! It still was a winnable game and we couldn’t pull it out. So pissed off at this franchise right now. We needed to capitalize starting 2 years ago, but now all our stars are aging or hurt and we stare a rested Titans team down next week, that we should beat handily, but doubts are starting to creep in this teams head and especially in the fanbase

by YohannDookeyblue on Oct 16, 2011 6:20 PM CDT reply actions   2 recs

this is me: last week.

I’m gonna tone it down this week only b/c people here get so sensitive, but YDB, I know exactly what’s going through your head. The Bills, Bucs, and Lions all turned their franchises around in considerably less time. Hell, so are the 49ers. I still hold my thesis that I think Schaub is the issue. He was better than last week, but his lack of mobility is absolutely destroying the play action option for this team. He’s “good,” but after this season, we’re gonna have to look to get “better.”

I’m holding out hope that the Titans don’t win 9 games, if they do, I think they’ll take the division.

Running game was slow to start and never really got going.

Passing game down Andre and Casey had to lean more on Foster and Jacoby and neither one gave us enough.

Really sad that Foster dropped those 3 passes. That 3rd down drop was a real back breaker for the team.

Good news is that I was expecting this because with two weeks to prepare for a short handed Texans team I expected the Ravens to win handily. They are to deep and talented for the Texans at this point.

Running game HAS to get better. Foster again was held in check. Good news is he and Tate show real good potential as a duo.

We need Andre back so Jacoby can go back to his slot quasi #2 spot. With Walter and Mason there the Texans should have plenty of room for those intermediate routes to open up with coverage on Andre because Jacoby isn’t scaring anyone into designing coverage’s around him.

Defense was okay. Those deep passes can’t happen but they did a great job limiting the Ravens to FG’s most of the day.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

No, not happening

I think that the fact that the defensive line from the past two weeks are as big as they are is what hurt the running game. 2 bad games=done??? I don’t think so. We still have 10 games to go. See y’all in Houston at the playoffs

They said on Texans Inside the game that Foster had issues with his Quadreceps before the game?

That could explain why Foster didn’t seem to be at his natural best. He DID seem to not be up to his usual magical self on the field.

I think Foster was very much affected by the abbreviated offseason. It probably pisses him off too that he’s having these issues.

I dunno about that...

Rosencopter? Q-tip? 80-yard, two-play Mark Sanchez TD drive with 40 seconds and no time-outs? OT pick-six? We choke in about as epic a fashion as you could imagine.

Notice how none of those are Schaub's fault?

I include the OT pick-six in that cause that was a horrible play call & we should have ran the ball there instead. That was on Kubiak, not Schaub. But Schaub has never made the epic kind of mistakes that Romo has made

Yes I am

I do think that some of the INTs Schaub throws at times are boneheaded, but in that situation with their backs to the end zone & that defense as dead tired as they were, they should have ran the ball down their throats. It was a horrible play call, & that’s on Kubiak

I'm wondering why Kubes is apparently such a control freak about making the calls

We don’t know if Schaub could be good at making calls on the fly b/c it SEEMS like Kubes is always doing the playcalling. People scorn Schaub for “not being elite” but I’m under the impression that the “elite” quarterbacks get to make their own playcalling during the games?

Brees
Brady
Manning

I always get the feeling that maybe, Matt Schaub might have a fair idea of what’s going on on the field better than Kubiak does?

Is this reality? Do Brees, Brady, and Manning all do their own play calling during the game? Or do they all rely on the coach to do the play calling?

Schaub’s interceptions in NO triggered the start of the collapse, and his int in Baltimore last season, as well as some other inopportune ones are most definitely the cause of many of these collapses.

by The Night Owl on Oct 16, 2011 9:41 PM CDT up reply actions

hmm.

I never thought that deeply into the coaching change. I just figured if Kubes is out, then Bobby would just hire another good ‘ole boy from the Denver tree. Honestly, I thought we were going to get rid of Kubes this year and get Rivera (which would have been an excellent choice imo.) If Reid gets fired, that could be an option, but as long as we don’t get Brad Childress or another dude from Denver, I’d be ok.

I could see the Texans maybe trying to go young, but the higher likelihood is a proven product like Jeff Fisher, Gruden, or Cowher. Cowher would be ideal, but really? u guys would be opposed to Dungy?? I think Dungy would be an excellent option. Especially if he left the ‘d’ up to Wade. But, of course, I’m not sure how that equilibrium would work out.

by wiseonekms on Oct 17, 2011 12:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Dungy would want to switch back to the 4-3 Tampa 2 Defense because that's what he runs

If we’re replacing Kubiak but keeping Wade, we need an offensive coach, not another defensive one. Truthfully, I think they could bring in Mike or Kyle Shanahan & retain most of the offensive staff intact.

coach or QB?

Either way, that’s not my job. I’d like to see this addressed in the draft, even if it meant trading up. That way, we could tutor a younger, more athletic QB in our system.

If we’re going with a young backup already in the NFL. I wouldn’t mind forfeiting a few draft picks for Brian Hoyer or Chase Daniel, and having them learn the system for an offseason and a bit next season.

Seems like Kubiak wasted a year on Carr and was never able to get “his guy” for DC. Now that he has a proven DC the offense has gotten older and it just seems like the rest of the NFL has caught up to our O style. We just don’t get stout when the money’s on the line….EVER…against any decent teams.

He’d been in the league awhile and was just another fringe player trying to stay on a team.. He comes here and just so happens to be the lead blocker in this zone scheme for Slaton and Foster and all of a sudden he’s the best FB in the league even though he’s not even on the field all that much on offense and the running game is most explosive out of single back sets.

Despite the fact he was here in 2009 when the running game was useless.

By far the most overrated Texan in team history. He’s a good lead blocker sure way overvalued.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

His value to the Texans seems fairly high.

Foster is probably more valuable in the Texans running scheme than he’d be to say, the Colts. He was free as well, but he’ll be paid this offseason (unless something horrible happens, I pray it won’t). Draft position isn’t always indicative of value, as we well know here.

I feel like I’ve seen where he’s been missed. But maybe getting Casey back fixes that.

Yes?

When you’re talking about someone who is arguably THE BEST at his position, it’s a total gamechanger.

If the pieces are inferior, the coaching doesn’t make a ton of difference. You’ve also got to keep in mind we were also playing a very solid D that knew they could tee off against our run game, making it a TON harder to sell the PA pass, which is the bread and butter for our passing game.

No AJ = worse running game = worse passing game = worse play in general across the board, not even taking into account how much better he makes our passing game even when he’s double-teamed all game.

This wasn't great, but it wasn't the Steeler game (which we won).

We got a couple of dubious calls, so did they. But the refs weren’t good. There was a play they called an incomplete pass that should have been grounding at best. Rice pulled down Cushing to try to prevent an interception. A few others. I’ve given up expecting good refs. I’ll just settle for something other than the referee crew that works for Pittsburgh.

Few bright spots I found from this game:

1. Maybe Derrick Mason can contribute faster than we thought. He looked good, fresh, and not old. He’s gonna come in handy towards the end of the season.

2. Jacoby stepped up. He juked out Ed Reed, made a legit play for that 4th down. Really improved from last week’s play. He deserves this.

3. Brooks Reed is a step down from Mario obviously, but he looked decent today. Not “great” but decent. Barwin and Cushing are a few steps away from going “monster” mode, which was a positive.

4. Yay for Wade Smith picking up and hustling for the 2 fumbles!

I don't see us

winning next week against the Titans, as much as I want us to. They have two weeks to prepare for us and I could see their defensive line doing what the Raiders did and just annihilating our O line. That team also knows that if they win that game they are in the driver’s seat in the division. Texans don’t get emotional or step up when they need to in a big game like that. Every week they have a handful of players that simply don’t show up to win. This week is was Arian Foster. Next week my money is on Eric Winston to pull a disappearing act; probably allows 2-3 sacks and kills a few drives with holding penalties (he is usually terrible against Tennessee).

God is not on our side because he hates idiots also.

Not all the time, it’ll get tuned out, but the power of a coach to lead and inspire is valuable and real, and I wonder if we have it. The coach has to have a plan, but sometimes all that separates two teams is who wants it more and that’s where the emotional stuff comes in.

Baltimore faced 5 teams last year coming off byes, it happens.

Flacco has to trust his receivers to make catches, but shouldn’t throw towards coverage. He needs to attack deep more often, but shouldn’t hold onto the ball so long. He needs to show more awareness in the pocket and move to extend plays, but nothing good comes of him leaving the pocket. He should run with the ball if nobody’s open, but he definitely can’t run with the ball.

Flacco should have the awareness of Roethlisberger, the elusiveness of Vick, the control of the offense of Manning, the leadership of Brady, the accuracy of Brees, and the arm strength of … Flacco? - Ampallang

True. But 2 seasons before that they were pretty good.

We had better win. We have no excuse, even without AJ, we’re simply a better team.

We simply have more talent.

I cant really name anyone on their D line. MAybe SenDerrick MArks? And they have CJ and Jared Cook.

Meanwhile we have Foster, Tate, OD, Walters, MAson. Dline we have Cushing (who is rounding back into All Pro form) Demeco, JJ Watt, JJo and Antonio Smith.

Most of those guys are all pros, former all pros our borderline all pros. So the BESF’s are playing with heart (fine and good, I hope we rip it from their chests) and a first year coach. We SHOULD win.

Like I said earlier, this loss would be a lot easier to stomach had we won last week. But going into a better team’s house coming off of a bye, without Mario, Dre, and Casey, and still competing for most of the game was admirable. Obviously, we didn’t play well enough to win, hence, the loss. However, if we lose to the Titans next week, I will revert back to my midseason depression.

not to sound too enthusiastic

but Brooks Reed looks like a clay matthews out there, and he will be with a little more seasoning. And I think we missed James Casey a lot because he is such a weapon coming out of the backfield, vickers not so much.

He was a poor man's Clay Matthews out there.

And his ceiling is probably a mediocre version of Clay Matthews. However, a mediocre version of Clay Matthews equals a pretty good player.

Reed can be a good contributer for us. Once he gets even more used to standing up, he’ll be that explosive, relentless player that he was at Arizona. He’s still a year or two away from his ceiling, though.

mmmmm, don't completely agree with this.

Reed’s ceiling is pretty high in my opinion. He looks to be very explosive and instinctive. Under Cush’s tutelage, he might be just as good. I know the positions are completely different, but if he has the tenacity of a Matthews and Cush, I’ll take it, b/c I see a “power” in Reed that is very comparable.

I was amazed the Texans kept the game close for three quarters

And then fell apart in the 4th quarter. Feel free to apply this statement to the game played against all three losses.

Last week I defended Schaub and pointed out blown technique on Wade Smith. This week Smith and Jacoby both stepped it up for a great contribution. Schaub looked terrible. He seems unable to read a defense and call an audible. Schaub is just a “good” QB (far from great), and can’t win without all three of our best weapons on the field at the same time (‘Dre, Foster and Daniels). I’m honestly ready to see what Leinart can do at this point.

he was a bright spot this game. I was so proud of him when he shook Ed Reed.

by wiseonekms on Oct 17, 2011 11:50 AM CDT up reply actions

Personally, I pin most of the blame on the running game, or lack thereof

Which is on the O Line and Arian together. Our pass protection held up much better than I thought, but so much of our passing offence is predicated by at least a reasonable run game. Interestingly, our running game has looked suspect ever since AJ went out except for the one super-human foster running play where he juked two Steelers out they jocks. Further, I think it’s symptomatic of our small O Line going against three of the bigger front 7s the last three weeks. They have been pushed around a lot by bigger teams, which scares me a bit because I think the Tits D Line are bigger(ref?) and I know the Bucs have big, strong line.

I was very happy with the D, even the long passes. Of course you never want to give those up, but to see and actual NFL quality defence out there – in Texan unis no less! – is amazing. Thought Reed played well, especially on passing downs, but still needs some work on his run support. But to see the pressure we’re generating, my God. If that keeps up the remainder of the season we will go far. Not many QBs strong enough to stand in there like that, get crushed and still be accurate/lucky.

All told, with missing our 2 best players and THOR, I think we put up much more of a fight than I expected, even though the final score wasn’t close. In fact, with AJ back (if he’s back) next week, I feel confident of getting a W in Methland. If not, then release the hounds, as it’s already unbearable with ridiculous comments like “I can see it in his body language, he’s a winner”. Roll on the Tacks…

Don’t think they make that in the grasp call anymore if the Quarterback manages to get rid of it before actually going down. There must have been an eligible receiver somewhere close but the only thing I saw during the replay were linemen.

According to this:

Officials are to blow the play dead as soon as the quarterback is clearly in the grasp and control of any tackler, and his safety is in jeopardy.

they could still call it. AFAICT, it was just a blown call. He effectively spiked the ball. He threw it going down trying to avoid the sack. I just don’t see anything to indicate it was a legal pass.

Absolutely, but I’m talking about for right now. I think his long term position is at safety, but if he’s the 2nd best corner on the team then I think that’s where he needs to play. As far as people wanting to draft a CB2 next season. NO THANKS. We have plenty of young corners, what we lack is some veteran leadership (outside of JJo). If there is one thing that JJo has spoiled us with, it is the ability to discuss the dline and other aspects of the team NOT named the secondary.

While he makes mistakes too, he is leaps and bounds better than what we had last season, and we should attribute the competency to his experience (and skill.) No young corners please, except on special teams and nickel packages.

It’s obvious our offense is a disaster without ’Dre. Schaub fails to make good defensive reads, is unable to run (maybe we should equip him with a walker or cane), and his targeting is still inconsistent.

The defense did great until the 4th quarter showed we were going to lose this thing (when the offense fizzled), and then they lifted the pressure and started saving reps for next week.

The defensive team is greatly improved from last year for sure, but the offense is unable to control a game and hang with better teams for four quarters.

go titans!

I’m on vacation this week, which makes me sad to miss sports talk radio this week (I usually listen to 610)….It is gold after the texans lose (and annoying after the texans win). Houston sports talk radio would be much better if they spent more time on other sports and having entertaining bits….instead it is Texans all the time. I can only listen to vand-a-homer or rich lord wax and wane about the littlest of texan details for so long. And lately Vandameer’s over the top defense of Schaub has gotten very annoying. But digress….

Good to see the Texans lose to the Ravens on the road. Now that the titans have beaten the ravens at home and lost to the steelers on the road, there is some symmetry with texans (who beat the steelers at home and lost to the ravens on the road). From my vantage point, the 2 teams look pretty even. Of course, delusional texan fans will say they are way better than the scrub titans. Even if evidence points otherwise. But then again, if I’ve learned anything from my 4 years in Houston, it is Texan fans are so hungry for a winning football team, that they drive themselves to be delusional. I’ll never forget a past August (2009 or 2010 I think) when one of the football outsiders was on the radio and predicted 6 wins for the Texans, and caller after caller was on the radio bashing that guy and saying math is for dorks and the texans were better than their record the year before and this year they would win 10 games. They won 6.

Having lived in the KC, St Louis, and Nashville media markets, it is my opinion that the Texan fans (judging by the callers into talk radio and the radio hosts themselves) are the most divorced from reality compared to Chiefs/Rams/Titan fans. Maybe that is because those teams have all went through up and down seasons the last decade (for the rams, more down than up..hahaha) and the fans have been conditioned to embrace reality and just see what happens. Maybe losing the Oilers just created this monster. Maybe it is a function of the media continually branding the texans the next breakout team. I don’t know.

Since we don’t get to have Britt the rest of the year, I hope Andre re-injures his hammy when he tries to push himself to come back this week. The division is only for the taking by my Titans or the Texans because of Manning’s injury.

Part of me will be kindof sad if the Titans win the division and the Texans don’t make the playoffs. No way Kubes survives that. And I think Kubes is the entire reason why the texans play soft most of the time. The team emulates the coach.

(the texans are also soft because they close the roof anytime the weather isn’t perfect….that angers the football gods)

I didn’t expect my titans to be very good this year with a new HC (who I like), a new offensive coordinator that was last coaching the XFL (he sucks in the nfl still), a new defensive coordinator who use to be in Washington (snyder is cancer and it spreads to whoever he touches), a holdout RB (the run game failure is 95% on the O-line, who can pass block but not run block), and Matt Hasselback as QB (early season success is fools gold). So, the season has been a huge success for me. Titans are over-achieving and Texans are under-achieving.

and guess what, AJ is injured!! I hope he tweaks it again so he doesn’t play this week (much like AF kept doing). No shame in that. That is being an asshole. That is wanting to win.

You see, AJ is one of the top 2 or 3 WR’s in football. We have a better chance to win if AJ doesn’t play. AJ is still going to play football a long time when his hamstring is healed.

So, you guys pray at night for Peyton and Britt to get healthy? sheeshhhh.

With that mentality

I hope the ego, bad teeth, and horrible grasp of the English language displayed by Chris Johnson spreads to the rest of your team like a cancer. I hope they all hold out from their agreed contracts and request ridiculous amounts of money (and gold teeth) and then start under performing once they get paid because they don’t give two shits about their team or winning, its all about the Benjamins. Baby.

I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.

uptight about the fact the texans were favored to win regardless of their shortcomings?

I didn’t really follow that….

I don’t think I’m uptight about much right now. Pretty happy, actually. My #1 hated team in the nfl lost this week. A little upset I’m out of town to hear the moaning in Houston. And a little bored being at the in-laws on “vacation”.

the texans were favored to win the division by default after Manning was ruled out for (probably) the year.

the texans past shortcomings have been pretty entertaining actually….that is why I will be sad when Kubes is finally fired. A tougher coach would have them much better by now.

my site?

before I moved to houston, I didn’t like the texans because they were in my division. After moving to houston, their fans started to annoy me. Then I watched more of their style of football and they too turned me off. Too soft for me. Since then it has spiraled out of control…hahaha

I hate the texans color scheme (what the traditional red/white/blue shades aren’t good enough?)

I hate their stadium (oh no, it is 59 degrees, close the roof!!!!!!!)

I hate schaub’s personality……I hate kubiak’s personality…..I hate Cushing…..I could go on, but it is petty…

But fact is, all NFL fans that LOVE a team, hate another. There were titan fans wishing the texans won because they hate the ravens that much.

I find sports to be just as fun when there is a villain, than when their is your favorite team. The team I despise is now the Texans…..

I'll read about him.

I’d say we need two types of WR added.

One is a guy who has the potential to be a #1 – not a Johnson, but a legit #1.

The other is a waterbug slot guy. They don’t seem hard to find if you look, and we don’t have a guy who can work in very little space, turn that 7 yard slant into a big gain and catches everything around him.

no.....finding a pass rushing LB is easy in the 3-4

Look at the best pass rushing LB’s in the 3-4, most are undrafted or low-rounds…..the LB in the 3-4 only has to rush…..mario was good at it this year, but a replacement will be just fine for you guys, just watch….

Mario was an NFL sack leader. He drew constant double teams.

Please don’t say losing him is nothing much, it’s silly.

Britt, despite a fine start this year, has a long way to go to catch Andre, who is currently behind only Jerry Rice in a lot of stats thus far in his career (on a season-by-season basis).

losign mario isn't nothing

but the 3-4 defense will still get plenty of pressure on the QB. look at today…….same thing with pitt, they lose harrison, but they will still get plenty of QB pressure….same with the jets….doesn’t matter who is that rushing LB in the 3-4….of course mario would be better than his replacement, but not by that much……in other words:

mario >>>>>> reed
britt >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> damien williams

and i wasn’t saying britt was as accomplished as AJ, but saying he was on his way to being an elite NFL WR….go look at his games last year and this year. He was turning into the type of WR you just throw it up into double coverage and he will come down with it, like AJ, Moss, Calvin, etc……I’m telling you, he has had some incredible games last year and this year…..suspensions and injuries keeping him down…lol

britt is injured

and AJ is already injured. He is going to try to play this week. I hope when he pushes himself to do so, he re-injures the hammy and doesn’t play this week. AJ is really good. And damn near impossible to cover. I’d prefer he not play. We are down our best WR. AJ not playing makes the game much more even, IMO, because with him I think the Texans probably win by a few TD’s. Like I said previously, the Titans are over-achieving right. I’d rather play a Texan team that looks lost on offense without AJ.

You guys are way too sensitive. I care less if you want our players injured or not. Or if you want our owner do die or something bad to happen to him. I’m sure you want your defense to crush Hass. Seems reasonable. I hope our DLine crushes cotton schaub and forces Matt Lienart to play.

Have you ever been to reliant? Remember the cowboys game last year, with all those fights and yelling. Football fans get rowdy. They don’t play patty cake.

I went to titans-texans during teh 13-3 titan season (titans lost when they went for it on 4th and 1 instead of kicking a FG). I thought I was going to get beat up cheering for the Titans in the corner where the visiting team locker room tunnel is. Walking out of the stadium was very scary. But that is football. They weren’t classless, they were being fans who didn’t appreciate someone wearing a titans jersey in their stadium and cheering for the titans. They were happy they won and it made them feel good. That’s life.

And after last years Finny-AJ showdown, there is even more bad blood, particularly with certain players.

Methinks you protest too much.

While I'm here

Sorry to go off topic a bit, but while I’m here I’m curious to know the opinion you guys have of Houston talk radio.

(sorry for the off topic, and sorry for visiting the blog, I am at the in-laws in VA and still on central time, and bored off my ass, and have exhausted all my regular sites)

Which sports talk radio station do you prefer? (I normally listen to 610)

Who are your favorite talk show hosts?

Josh Innes and John Lopez are my favorite personalities on 610. I can’t stand vandameer. Rich Lord is ok, but having him paired with Josh isn’t the best setup. I think the Lance Z guy is way to full of himself to be entertaining. Adam and Matt kind of annoy me. I like Sean Cal-whatever his last name is, and also really like Richard Justice.

I don’t know if any of you have ever listened to Chris Vernon from Memphis. That is the type of drive-time radio program I’m use to. He covers the local sports, but doesn’t dwell on them too much like 610 does the Texans, and he books more entertaining guests and has more non-sports, but entertaining segments on the show.

by zackmann on Oct 16, 2011 10:53 PM CDT reply actions

I'm not too keen on sports radio here

Although I do listen when I’m in the car. Most of the callers are stupid. Rich Lord and Josh Innes contradict each other all the time(pretty sure on purpose) just to create conflict in hopes of driving ratings. In regards to your comment about dwelling on the Texans, the ’Stros lost 106 games this year and the NBA is locked out.

No, that was accurate.

The Schaub bashing is ridiculous. In the Oakland game if Vickers had caught an easy swing pass for a TD they’d say Schaub was great. He didn’t, so they get pissed at him for not making a last second throw after somehow getting to the goaline in order to have a shot at that throw.

But back to schaub. I think the bashing is fine. Although I agree with Rome that just saying someone sucks isn’t a take, but their is a fine argument to be made that schaub isn’t the guy the team needs (although I would probably argue that schaub and kubiak are a package deal, either they both stay, or eventually they both go at the same time).

As far a Schaub, he’s a very good QB. He’s not Manning, Brady or Brees in that he can’t win a game the team really shouldn’t win.

then again, if one has never been to other radio markets to know what is out there and only know the crappy houston radio shows, one might not like josh much…..he can be annoying sometimes, but someone has to liven up the mood with rich lord being too even keel for drive-time radio.

Even when the nfl season is over, they talk just as much texans as rockets….

hey, I get the football matters stuff

but I could even use more college football talk than what goes on in Houston. Houston is now a major SEC city (AM and LSU), so I hope that increases the college football talk in town and decreases the focus on every little texan detail.

I am a AM talk radio junkie, and I prefer local over national (like what is on XM), but lately, I’ve been having to torture myself with Mike and Mike just to get some sports talk that isn’t focused on the texans 24/7

sometimes I wonder if the houston radio managers understand how many people move to houston to work for hte oild industry from other parts of the country.

If shows would open up topics to be about more than just the texans, there would still be plenty of callers and listeners for those segments. Lots of transplants in houston. More than in most cities.

I wouldn't hold your breath on Houston sports radio getting better. There is a big audience, but now that there are what

ESPN 97.5 did themselves a disservice moving Fred Faour & Matt Dean (& now A.J. Hoffman) to weekdays

The Front Page was a great 4 hour lead in football, plus they did all kinds of crazy stuff on that show, plus they really got the listeners involved, which is surprising for a Sunday morning radio show

Probably the most classic thing was they got a guy to run in the Houston Marathon while calling into the show every once in a while

However because he failed to register in time, he wasn’t technically a participant in the marathon, yet he ran anyways, plus he was cutting between the different races. Although it was brutal for him because they wouldn’t give him water because he wasn’t legally in the race, but he did call regularly throughout the entire 4 hour show. I swear, that was absolutely classic. Also this past March, they did a week long Worst Band/Musician Tournament on the Blitz where people voted for the worst musician on their Facebook page. They had plenty of terrible bands & musicians to choose from, but in the end, David Hasselhoff edged out the Insane Clown Posse for the title of Worst Musician ever

but I do agree that the nba lockout is depressing…..

You know, I don’t think I heard one minute of talk radio discussing how great Kyle Lowry played in Las Vegas this summer.

But there were like 4000 hours devoted to schaub leading informal lockout practices.

By the way, I am somehow tied to kyle lowry. I move to memphis, he gets drafted teh next year by memphis….then I move to houston, and months later he is traded to houston. crazy

Lowry is one of my favorite Rockets.

If he can maintain the leap he made in the second half he’s one of the best PG no one knows about. He’s like a FS at point.

As for sports radio – well Houston has top level teams in everything but hockey. It has two major universities. And in football season, all you will hear is football.

This is such a huge football town, there is an incredible unrealized fandom potential. People forget just what a major football city Houston was when the Oilers were breaking our hearts every year.

The sky is not falling,

the world is not coming to an end. The Texans lost a game that they should have lost today, however the schedule will be pretty easy from here on out and after a firm stomping of the Titans next week everyone will feel better.

I keep hearing

… “At least, in our losses, we put up a tough fight.” and “I expected to lose to the Saints and the Ravens.” I hate that talk. That’s pansy-do-ur-best-we’re-all-winners gibberish! Do you remember ‘09?? We lost to the Jets in Game 1 and who got the wildcard spot that year? The Jets!!! It came down to THAT LOSS. Don’t tell me its only one game! Don’t tell me I expected to lose! This is the NFL! There are only 16 games, each one counts heavily. If you haven’t noticed: we’re not coming out for the 2nd half of football!

The sky isn’t falling but something needs to change.

I really am tired about hearing

how the Texans “can’t close teams out” because they didn’t beat a better team on the road that was coming off of a bye week while missing their best offensive and defensive player and also missing another major piece of the offense in James Casey. There was no reason that they should have won today, losing should have been expected, it is not a sign of the approaching Armageddon.

The one that went over Kareem...

Was underthrown by pretty big margin. Smith had to cut his route off and pick it up underneath. That ball was put in a spot that an in-position CB easily makes a play on it. Unfortunately, even in Kareem’s best effort at deep coverage, he’s still positioned to the outside and trailing the receiver.

3rd quarter problems...

… that’s our issue. The reason we’re not getting it done in the 4th qtr, in my humble opinion only, is that our defense is worm out from the 3rd quarter! It may be mu imagination but it seems to me that we haven’t converted a single 3rd dwn in the 3rd. Does some have a stat on that? How many pts have we scored in the 3rd this yr? What the time of play for def and off in the 3rd? I’d bet if we look it up we’re going to see a defense-lopsided-3rd quarter.

Well, we only challenge plays...

… that have insufficient evidence to overturn a ruling. If it was clear and apparent in the replay that the pass was actually incomplete – then we don’t challenge those. If we challenged plays that we obvious we wouldn’t be able to waste time outs… see?

The issue with trolls...

If you react to them, the thread goes up in flames.

If you try to ignore them, eventually you just ignore the whole thread, and sometimes the whole site which leaves us without a place to engage on our favorite topic.

please BAN the trolls so we don’t have to leave the site. I suspect we’ll have more than our normal load this week.

Banning on this site is VERY rare

We have this cockeyed optimism that we can raise a troll’s discourse to a respectable level. So far we’ve been successful on 999,873 out of 999,875 attempts. Personally, I’m pulling for you. But then again, one more banning wouldn’t kill our stats.

What is everyone complaining about?

Kubiak has done horrible the past few seasons— we can all agree to that, but nothing can be blamed to him this year. Who would’ve thought 2 of our 3 best players are hurt? Arian has been doing good— like the CBS commentators said, Randy Moss being on the field in Minnesota allowed the rusher to get 50 yd MORE per game. Arian did well in his first game back because ANDRE wasn’t hurt yet— well later in the game— then he was stopped late in the game cause Andre was out. Mario got out— and your defense is still ranked #1 in sacks cause of Wade. We have nothing to worry about. As long as our core 3- Schaub Dre Foster are healthy— I see us making the AFC championship game— AND WHY DIDN’T WE PICK UP MALCOM FLOYD.

by thechamp531 on Oct 17, 2011 11:32 PM CDT reply actions

There still a chance for a move

Brandon Lloyd is gone though. The Rams traded for him. I wouldn’t mind going after Asante Samuel as long as we include Kareem in the deal so we can fit him under the cap

by The Night Owl on Oct 18, 2011 12:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

But didn’t we trade a unconditional second round draft pick for Derrick Mason? The Rams got him for a 7th round draft pick I believe. When did a Pro Bowl Receiver get so cheap. Imagine Lloyd and Johnson— we’d have the best receiving corps in all of football. When did the Eagles put Samuel on the block? I doubt the Eagles would want Jackson— and Jackson isn’t that bad this year. I’m still not sure why we didn’t go for Lloyd— if we really wanted to win this year. we would’ve signed him. Our offense is slacking, not our defense even with Williams out. Kubiak also needs to get better on play-calling. I am hating this 3rd-and-long every game especially without Johnson. Short screen pass for 5-10 yards over and over with Arian running every other play— not only does that help your defense, but it shows consistency and it makes it hard to d up against.
