Matt Schaub To Have "Precautionary" MRI On Hip

Awesome.  I know injuries are a part of the NFL.  Still, between this, Arian Foster, Ben Tate, Derrick Ward, Andre Johnson, Rashad Butler, Mario Williams, and whoever else I'm forgetting, the dings are really starting to pile up, and we haven't even hit the midpoint of the 2011 regular season yet.

No need to freak out after hearing this particular piece of news, of course, but trying to downplay the notion of the most indispensable Texan getting an MRI by labeling it as "precautionary" doesn't exactly make the concern disappear. Matt Schaub has taken a beating the last couple of weeks.

That's exactly what came to my mind.

Schuab’s really impressed me with his toughness this year, though. That Ngata helmet to the sternum and the Seymour knee shot were both brutal.

I told some of my friends who are always bashing Schaub

That I wished they could see what the team would be like without him since they hate him so much. Damn it, I didn’t REALLY want it to happen though.

true

but think about who has been available in the past few seasons that they didn’t go for… you are right though… they made a few moves, but i guess I would like to see someone compliment AJ on the offense. That’s all.

by TheyCallMeTex on Oct 17, 2011 6:16 PM CDT up reply actions

It might have something to do with him only having one good season in a 9 yr career

Ok, so he was decent back in ‘05 but since then he hadn’t done shit until last year. Mason at least has been a consistent contributor.

I'm a man!! I'm forty!!

by Hydroshock on Oct 17, 2011 6:42 PM CDT up reply actions

well, that aspect is true, but...

I am just looking for someone who can pose as a threat enough to a defense that it pulls coverage off AJ. Lets face it, most decent defenses don’t have to worry about doubling anyone else on the team, cept maybe OD, and Johnson has double coverage a lot with a safety playing him deep.

I know most wouldn’t agree, but I was kinda hoping we would have gone after Randy Moss, because he pulls coverage rather or not he performs….

by TheyCallMeTex on Oct 17, 2011 7:10 PM CDT up reply actions

by nolander on Oct 17, 2011 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I know I've said this a few times before but it bear repeating

I could see that if we ran a vertical passing game, but our offense isn’t built that way. Sure we run the occasion deep route off of play action, but our bread and butter plays are your typical West Coast, short to medium routes that keep us “on schedule”, as Kubiak and Schaub like to say. So the need for another deep field stretcher isn’t really a high priority. IMO what compliments Dre better are possession receivers. We need guys that run good routes and get open consistently, and when they do they need to catch the ball.

Walter is pretty good in that role, although he doesn’t get enough separation on a consistent basis. Jacoby? Well, he’s Jacoby. I personally like the Mason signing because that’s what he has excelled at his entire career. The guy gets open and he catches the ball well in traffic, and we saw how well he holds onto it when he takes a big hit.

by TEXSON on Oct 17, 2011 9:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes, I've had a change of heart about Jacoby

It’s not the first time I’ve changed my mind about a subject and it won’t be the last. I think he has all the potential in the world but he can’t seem to overcome certain things like finishing routes and catching over the middle. He still makes the occasional spectacular catch like we saw Sunday, but too often he disappears in games.

As for blasting you, I’m sure it was less about the content of your remarks and more about the tone. But hey, congratulations on winning the internet. Enjoy your victory.

Not broken: torn

MRIs are more for muscles, tendons, inflammation, and possibly ligaments (depends on the machine itself). If you want to see if something is broken, an x-ray is easier and faster. There’s several important ligaments at the hip joint, or there could be a microfracture, but it’s more likely to show up on an x-ray.

Schaub was running forward on that play Ngata helmeted him in the chest.

Chronicle mentioned it should have been a flag. I’m wondering though if Schaub is to be considered a runner while he was running forward. Does that helmet to runner rule only apply after you cross scrimmage?

Chronicle also forgot to mention the more blatant non-call and that was the facemask on Foster on 4th down.

it's time

5th year of Schaub… what more do we need to see? He’s a middle-to-lower tier QB who seldom makes a clutch play to win a game. Give Leinart a shot or continue with the status quo? Since this is an extremely pro Kubiak/Schaub blog and anyone who disagrees is a troll, there’s no question what the answer here will be.

It's Our Time.... or something...

by bennprince on Oct 17, 2011 9:36 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

you can name 20 QB’s worse than Schaub?

it would be easier to name 20 QB’s better than Schaub and the young guys (Newton, Bradford, Dalton, Freeman, McCoy) that are not statistically, at least have potential and room for growth. Into a 5th season in the same offense and system a QB should be consistently winning or it’s time to start looking elsewhere.

The problem with this organization and fanbase is that they refuse to acknowledge mediocrity and view it as progress believing that things will magically change. Of course they never change and we’re stuck with the same ole Texans year after year while other teams are turning things around within a year.

Hasselbeck and Manning are both playing better this year.

Romo has had a better career, Bradford and Ponder at least have some upside, and outside of Houston, most everybody would take Big Ben and Cutler over Schaub.

Going forward, I suppose Schaub will hold up longer than Hasselbeck. But two straight years of regression has me worried.

by Nashmeister on Oct 18, 2011 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Other than a big arm

There’s nothing I like about Cutler, and I certainly don’t think he offers anything that Schaub doesn’t.

Vision….nope….intelligence….nope…..toughness….nope….demeanor….nope.

by Hydroshock on Oct 18, 2011 11:27 AM CDT up reply actions

so you named about 15 starters

that are arguably worse than Schaub. If someone outside of Houston were to parse that list maybe 5 would stick. The other guys either have rings or are young with upside beyond Schaub who hit his ceiling in 2009 and is clearly regressing.

San Diego wins the West and Palmer may be able to get them to the playoffs however it’s certainly not a given. Either way, a majority of the wins have come against bottom feeders so there’s not a lot to get excited about other than the defense playing better… but just like the same ole Texans do every year, another area of the team regresses which ultimately leads to a mediocre season.

It's Our Time.... or something...

by bennprince on Oct 18, 2011 1:03 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

So which is it?

They are either better now, have a ring (which would imply better at one point like Manning) or they MIGHT be better in a couple of years. What are you asking? Because the guys you say have a “higher ceiling” are most certainly not better right now. There are at most 10 QBs that are definitely better than Schaub RIGHT NOW. Which means he is equal to or better than 2/3 of the league.

"Never underestimate the dumb with JJ" - Hugh Jarce

by Mumford on Oct 18, 2011 1:46 PM CDT up reply actions

2/3 is a high number

Would you rather have Andy Dalton or Schaub? What about Cam Newton? Matthew Stafford? Josh Freeman? Kevin Kolb? All young guys that may or may not put up the numbers but clearly have a higher ceiling than Schaub who is obviously regressing.

It's Our Time.... or something...

by bennprince on Oct 18, 2011 7:11 PM CDT up reply actions

The only one out of those I would take over Schaub is Freeman

Maybe Newton in a few years, but not now. Newton & Dalton is too young & inexperienced, Stafford has been extremely injury prone, & Kolb hasn’t exactly done much outside of his first two starts

I'd keep Schaub over Freeman

but I might take Stafford. Injury history aside, he’s playing lights out right now and has a great deep ball.

Like I said

Bennprince, Superbowl Ring ≠ a good QB! Trent Dilfer, would love you! and I should add peyton manning on that list because currently he sucks! and I bet you there are pleanty outside of houston who would see most of those QBs and think the same thing. I saw Schaub on a lot of outside of houston top 10 list… I am not saying he is Tom Brady, but the only reason I would pick Ben R over Schaub is his mobility. And who knows how any of the young guys end up.
I think you are seeing regression where injury has been a major reason for it. We have lost Andre, Arian, Ben, Butler, Ward, Casey at some point this season. With dings to Wade Smith, Brown, Schaub, Walter, Jacoby. Our offense is getting beat up because of the strength of the Defenses we have played so far.

some of all

There is no question that Roethlisberger is a better QB so let’s just throw that one out the window. The guy is a winner… plain and simple.

We can make every excuse in the world for Schaub (like we did for Carr) but the fact remains that the guy is not a winner and this is what QB’s are judged by no matter how bad their teams are. When Aaron Rodgers lost a bunch of weapons last year they didn’t sit around making excuses. When Roethlisberger’s defensive line was horrible a few years ago he found a way to win a Super Bowl.

If you can honestly say that you see a winner in Matt Schaub… well… I wouldn’t know how to respond to that because the guy loses a lot more games for his team than he wins. The W/L columns speak for themselves and are all that matter in the end.

Last year the defense was losing games

the year before it was the Chris/Kris Brown effect. Yes he has thrown bonehead interceptions at the end of games, but his numbers have been solid and he hasnt been as bad as most make him out to be. Am I saying he is an elite QB? NO. but he is better than over 2/3 of the QBs in the league. I put Roethlisberger at about the same level as Schaub, not worse. you asked who was at or below schaubs level I gave you my opinion. your whole ceiling thing is redundant, because in that sense Matt Leinart, and TJ Yates have a higher Ceiling.

by bennprince on Oct 18, 2011 8:03 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

It's not that this blog is Pro-Schaub per se.

Objectively, Schaub is better than lower-tier. Whether you look at stats which are clearly in favor of Schaub being upper tier to middle tier, or whether you just look at the other 31 starting quarterbacks and go off of a gut feeling, I think it’s hard to argue that Schaub is a bad quarterback.

The flip-side of that, is that he isn’t the best quarterback in the league, and unless you have that, it’s possible to improve. The reason why I, for one, favor the status quo, is that the downside of Schaub is not enough to warrant sacrificing our future to improve the QB position. I just don’t think that the difference between Schaub’s play and the improved play that a better QB would give us is worth giving up what it would take to do that.

Of course, that value judgment is based on my view of Schaub. The worse you think Schaub is, the greater the value in replacing him. So to recap, I don’t think you’re a troll, I just disagree with your assessment of Schaub.

by Tailgate Andy on Oct 17, 2011 9:47 PM CDT up reply actions

This is the same argument I have with alot of people.

They see Brady and Rodgers and Manning(peyton) and Brees making big plays and not very many bad plays. Then they see Shaub play a not so hot game and tell me how bad he sux and the Texans need to get rid of him… but here’s my reply to all of this…

Like him or not, he isn’t horrible. He’s not the best or the worst, but that doesn’t even matter… the big question here is… Who will you replace him with? He’s the best we have, much better than anyone else available, and if you don’t have an answer to that, other than the draft, SHUT UP, cuz we aren’t getting any one of the four QBs I mentioned earlier.

What the hell?

Are we 0-6 or just 3-3

Anyone who predicted this team to be better than 4-2 after this stretch was drowning in Battle Red Koolaid. 3-3 is where most had us pegged at this point with a very manageable schedule the rest of the way.

You don’t pull the “let’s see what we have” card until your chance for the playoffs is out of reach (see Vikings). At this point you give it all with the players you feel give you the best chance to win, not risk the season on the outside chance of a slight upgrade at quarterback.

If/when we are 3-6 you can play that card all you want, I’ll be right there with you.

Its really unbelievable.

The transients from TexansTalk use every loss to call for a new coach and QB (because better ones are a dime a dozen apparently?). They’re totally jumping the gun on this. With the worst part of the schedule out of the way, 3-3 is about as good as we could have hoped. I still think we get 10-11 wins.

FreeRange. I have been saying this…. We get AJ back soon which will give us one of the few times that AJ AND Arian Foster have been on the field at the same time. I think everyone here knows how good AJ is but i dont think everyone is realizing how he completely changes the way our offense functions. That combined with a pretty easy schedule the rest of the way = a very happy fan base by our bye week.

I think its interesting

Because its a testament to how quickly things change in the NFL. Last year the Jags were in the running for the AFC South late in the season. When they make the schedule I think they’re trying to put the most meaningful games together, its amazing how hard it is to predict those.

Knowing the Jaguars attendance (or lack thereof), I dunno why the hell they’d be given 2 home MNF games …. At least give one to us or even to you, MNF games in Houston always looked like good atmospheres and the one we had in 08 was awesome. Just anyone but the Jags …..

Thier team is 4-2 as of right now plus you get picks for a player who was just chilling at home.

However, that's a move Al Davis would have been proud of

One strong arm QB goes down & you quickly replace him

They won't throw him in yet

Give him a year or two

Probably, but not right away

Al saw the mistake they made with Russell, which may be why he didn’t push so hard to get his suspension lifted

They've said his work ethic has been pretty good so far

Hell, Jason Campbell even jokingly asked him if he was an offensive consultant during a classroom session

I meant Russell's work ethic

Like they made a mistake evaluating Russell’s work ethic before drafting him, or they thought they could coach that into Russell.

ZOMG THE TEXANS SHOULD HAVE TRADED FOR HIM

Now we are stuck with Schaub

We can get Tebow next year when Denver goes after Andrew Luck

Drew Brees and the Saints can't work out a contract! Let's get him!

I'll be surprised if the Texans actually make another move

The only move I expect them to do right now is put Barber on IR & call up Shiloh Keo from the practice squad

yea i think we done.

i still cannot wait to field our team with walter, andre, and mason.

by southpaw70 on Oct 18, 2011 10:43 AM CDT up reply actions

I wonder, when Andre comes back

Who will be our WR3? Is it possible Kubes will send Holliday back to the PS and move Jacoby to return duties and WR4?

I would prefer this

I have lost all faith in JJ

Then again, OD did draw quadruple coverage on that play & Ed Reed bit that way too

One play

Does not cancel out the rest of the year for me. The experiment is over IMO

I thought he had overall a good game, just wasn't enough for us to win.

Had we gotten that out of him against the Raiders we would have won that game. But then again that’s the problem too, he wasn’t there when we most needed him.

Same

What did it for me was listening to Dre talk about him. Apparently he’s still impatient in his route running and has a tendency to give away his routes by rushing his cuts. I mean, if he hasn’t been able to learn that by watching the master by now then I dunno. Maybe he has ADD.

I'm a man!! I'm forty!!

Mason could end up being our #3

But with the current roster as is, Holliday won’t get cut. He could take over kick return duties to alleviate Manning’s work load
