Deep Steel Blueprint: Instant Blitzin' Gonna Get You
I must admit, sometimes it is hard to write these blueprints because I try to avoid repeating myself. Lately, it seems as if you could simply put the game on the backs of the offensive line and however they perform will determine the outcome. They bullied
I could jump to metrics for the Tennessee Titans, but how can I take their defense seriously when they’ve played four offenses that rank 20th or worse on that little Outsiders site and four that would qualify as average-to-below average in raw cumulative stats. If I did stick to the metrics, I could just write about how Houston needs to utilize the tight ends...again. Bore, snore.
The real fun would be in dissecting the Titans' passing attack (4th in DVOA, 9th in yards per game) as they have faced defenses that average a respectable FO-rank of 11.6. A large part of this success is due to the fact that Tennessee protects Matt Hasselbeck very well, as evidenced by their seven sacks allowed – technically tied for the lead with Buffalo and Oakland, even though both those teams have played one more game.
Of course, that would be similar to what's been said before since it’s all about pressuring the quarterback. The Titans have protected Hasselbeck well, but I could point out how Wade’s defense did against similar pass-blocking stalwart Oakland by harassing Jason Campbell all day to the tune of three sacks and twelve hits. I would then stress that the defense must bring the same unpredictability from last week's game to keep Hasselbeck off target, as
I don't want to repeat myself though. Luckily, this song I discovered by John Lennon gets the point across instantly to Mr. Hasselbeck.
Tim Jamison’s gonna get you,
Gonna knock you right on the head,
You better get yourself together,
Pretty soon you're gonna be dead,
What in the world you thinking of,
After Timmy gives you a shove,
What on earth you tryin' to do,
When he’s comin’ for you, yeah you.
Brian Cushing’s gonna get you,
Gonna look you right in the face,
Better get yourself together, Matty
Looks like you’re in outer space,
How in the world you gonna see,
Tryin’ to run and flee,
Who on earth do you think you are?

Well, wrong you are.
Well we all blitz on,

Cowboy Ninja’s gonna get you,
Gonna knock you off your feet,
Better recognize pass coverage,
Or you’ll be dead meat,
Why in the world are you here,
Surely you would rather disappear,
Why on earth are you there?
The Ninja’s everywhere,
He’s gonna get his share.
Well we all blitz on,

wouldn't read too much into the pittsburgh game
it was combo of the Titans being flat and the steelers playing like their season depended on it, in front of their gawd awful obnoxious fans. the o-line dominated the Ravens pass rush all day when we actually showed up to play.
Pittsburgh was just an all around bed crapper for the Titans, which is not to say they might not crap the bed once again. i think being at home, coming off a bye, with control of the division on the line, makes it highly unlikely we see such a terrible repeat performance. this has to be a close game, whichever way it goes, or i’ll be pretty shocked.
what’s up w/ your rush defense? you guys have made a habit of being quite kind to CJ, so i’m am cautiously optimistic he will finally look good again, given some time to knock the rust off and a bye week to rest up.

I'll be honest...I've no idea about the rush defense
It started off pretty slow, but they’ve held Run MDC and Ray Rice in check, for the most part. The struggles come in the 4th quarter because the offense can’t keep the ball long enough to give them a breather….but for the most part, I’m starting to feel good(?) with the rush defense even with Shaun Cody in the middle. If you can stop those two backs then you’re doing something right, and I did think the defense would improve over time (which they have).
What the defense really needs is for the offense to put up points again so they can do what they do best….blitz. It’s very Coltian in that sense.

Well just like you don't want us to read much into the Pitt game
Don’t read much into previous games between the Texans and the Titans concerning Chris Johnson’s numbers. True outside of the first meeting last year (7 caries, 5 yds), CJ routinely took us to the woodshed. But this is a new year with a new (READ: experienced) DC and a completely new system.
Does that mean the 2011 defense can contain CJ? Who knows, but I wouldn’t put much stock in previous performance against the Texans as a way to gauge future performance.
Rob Schneider was an animal. Then he was a woman. And now Rob Schneider is... a stapler! And he's about to find out that being a stapler is harder than it looks. Rob Schneider is… "The Stapler". Rated PG-13.

The easy route would be to say
If the Titans are good at running up the middle then they could find running success as that’s where Houston’s most weak (How you doing, Shaun Cody?).
Part of me would wonder if Javon Ringer wouldn’t have more success at running against Houston…
"Lord, beer me strength."
Ring 'Em Up
I think you are right about Ringer’s style being more suited for the Texans’ NT weakness. However, much like the Texans’ insistance on playing Petey Jackson, the Titans are going to live and die by CJ since they have invested so much into him.
I fully expect them to try and involve CJ out of the backfield much in the same way that we use Foster.
by DeathBySexy on Oct 19, 2011 11:49 AM CDT up reply actions
we don't live or die by him
In fact… if he shows he isn’t going to do well we quit very quickly: see weeks 1-3, Cleveland game was ok… just hope your lbs can contain him (which they have the ablility) and hope that your DT’s can push our blockers back… after doing all that make sure Matt Hasselbeck doesn’t dissect your secondary… after you do all that make sure your QB is protected… then you establish the run and congratulations you beat the Tennessee Titans.. we’re not the team that has been crapping on you the last decade… we’re better hahahahahahahaha just playin

NO REALLY I LITERALLY BLEED TWO TONE BLUE!!! That operation to dye my blood was the best $100,000 I ever spent
The preoccupation with being critical of Shaun Cody and the Texans' weakness to runs up the middle are a bit off base, IMO.
Tell me, how many 3-4 defenses have their NTs leading the team in tackles? The defense is based on the strength of the LBs to fill gaps. That is the premise for starters. Yes, if the NT continually get beat and pushed around, it makes the hole bigger. But, I bet if you go back and look, you will consistently see the MLBs getting beat on the majority of runs up the middle that go for distance. It takes a team, folks. I’m not saying Shaun Cody is anywhere near the top of the NT rankings. But, to label him as the doormat that opposing offenses wipe there feet on is not objectively looking at the whole picture. I can see many plays where DeMeco is caught out of position or handled readily by blockers and taken out of the picture. Let’s spread it around. Shaun Cody is just a convenient target because he’s a cute punchline that gets laughs.
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
The NT isn't supposed to lead in tackles
but he is supposed to command attention and keep blockers off the linebackers so they can fill holes.
While the LBs have been far more noticeable of late, Shaun Cody didn’t initially do his job. I can’t speak of lately as I haven’t focused on him, but it wasn’t for a cute punchline or convenient target. He sucked, he got pushed around, and the run defense reflected that.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Really?
They started out 2-0 and you’re saying the early games. Lately, they’ve gone 1-3 and you say you’ve noticed the LBs.
Okay, I think this is cause to warrant another look at Cody to see if he is a punchline, a reasonable facsimile, or stepping it up.
Because, in the last two games, I will say, they have for the most part handled the opposing run game up the middle, against the Raiders and the Ravens. It was in the 4th quarter when they gave up some yards and I’m not sure that Cody was even on the field for some of the big letdown plays, and I’m not even sure if they were even up the middle.
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
I'm blaming the 4th quarter letdowns...
On the offense.
The defense has done their job brilliantly. They really have stepped up their game and begun shutting down the run as well. I don’t think I can overstate how incredible they’ve played lately,
The problem is the offense doesn’t sustain drives and, I suspect, tires the defense out….which is how these teams run over them in the 4th. It also doesn’t help that the offense can’t score points and force teams into passing (so they can bring the blitz).
"Lord, beer me strength."
agreed in complete.
that being said, i still think the offense will come around, and we will see how good this team Really is.

Well then, Shaun Cody says, "How you doin', TDC..." LOL
I’m not asking for Shaun Cody to be given any hall passes, but you did use him for a punchline, and I’m not so sure it is deserved. I’m not so sure you think it’s deserved, now that I read what your saying.
I wonder if it’s time for a BRB writer to step up to the plate and take a swing at an objective piece on just how good the Texans run D has been looking lately and maybe Shaun Cody is one of the reasons why. Is that asking too much? Probably. Maybe it’s wrong. Maybe it’s too soon. Maybe he is destined for permanent punchline status on BRB. My personal feeling is he has done a lot better lately and it isn’t funny…. ba-dum tsshhhhh
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
If you watch the game (DVR w/Pause - Frame step)
…and focus on Cody, and Earl Mitchell for that matter, you see them play after play get pushed back 3 yards or more on run plays. They both are not good at holding the point of attack and get pushed around fairly easily. That’s not good. The only time you notice them doing a good job is when Cody makes a tackle on a run play…five yards down field. A NT should not be five yards down field on a run play catching (not form tackling, there’s a difference) a running back. Only LBs should be doing that as they START 5 yards behind the line. Also, check out the Ray Rice run in the Ravens game. Mitchell gets destroyed and thrown into Jamison leaving a gaping hole. All Vonta had to do was but a body on DeMeco and it was off to the races. They’re both not good.
Blind fandom is all I got left.

I would like to point out
that according to most draft consensus, we should be able to get both of those players. Ta’amu would very likely have to be our first rounder, but Dwight Jones (or Juron Carter, who is a very similar player) should be available in the second, if not the third round.
The strong do what they have to do; the weak accept what they have to accept
The 2nd round is where I'd expect the Texans to look at a WR
Which is why I’ve been focusing on Jones. Also the fact that UNC runs an offense based on the Texans offense is another reason I’d want him

It looks like the consensus is WR or NT, 1 and 2 in the draft
I can go along with that. I am not defending Cody saying that he is anything good. I’m just saying he isn’t a punchline, is all. The Raiders and Ravens are run-first teams and the Texans D mostly did a good job holding them. Yes, there were a couple series where there were a couple big plays and I’m not defending anyone on those. And, it’s a team scheme all the way, so if there is a big play, there is blame to go around.
What I don’t like is, here it is week 6 and we are talking about the draft next Spring.
I want to talk about the playoffs, the game against the BESFs, and I want to see the 30-year old Schaub drink from the Fountain of Youth and have a great second half of the season. He either carries this team to the playoffs or it isn’t happening, in my estimation. Yes, Foster is awesome, but Schaub is the guy that is consistently counted on to get the third and longs. That is where games can be won on offense. That and the red zone. This team will not win enough games if Kubiak does what he did last week and go run-run-run in the red zone.
That is just my opinion.
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
It's never too early to look at the next draft class
But as the wins & losses rack up, we’ll figure out who’ll we actually be in position to draft

I think the draft talk
is a reflection of problems either at a position or with depth. WR depth is a big problem, as there really isn’t a credible threat after AJ.

You're exaggerating.
What you described happened to Cody twice last week; once on a run that went right tackle, and another in which the center and guard both jammed him off the snap (the play was stopped for a loss by Antonio Smith, anyways). What I did notice is that Cody played low throughout the game and held his own against a damn good run-blocking center. Our defensive line stuffed Ray Rice for about three quarters. And as has been the case all year long, the opposing RB got his yards by bouncing it outside or hitting cut-back lanes.
I’ll agree on Earl Mitchell, though. He was blown off the line three times in the fourth quarter alone. If he doesn’t win off the snap with his quickness, he simply can’t recover. Hurray for his slightly better pass-rushing skills I suppose, but that’s not what I’m looking for in our base formation.
Agreed on Cody vs. Ravens
Also, that was easily the BEST he’s played. Serviceable, maybe – at best. Definitely not what you want long term.

nah
it’s a blocking thing. ringer hasn’t been any better. basically CJ is off his other-worldy game, and with out said other-worldliness, no one can overcome the blocking. his 2k year, we were 21st in run-blocking by FO, which is, again, other-worldly. if he can’t make 3 people miss before he gets 2 yards up field, it all falls apart, and right now he can’t.
i think it’s a fatigue thing for CJ. his agent is brilliant for orchestrating the hold out when he did. but Fisher ran him like a dog 2 years in a row and it’s showing. if it doesn’t happen for him during the next 3 games, i’m giving up til they overhaul the interior line this offseason.

More likely that CJ got his contract...
And he’s twitching his way to the bank and not giving a flip about the game anymore. Sorry man, I know you’re a fan, but I just don’t like the guy. His holdout might have been “Brilliant” from a team standpoint, but I think less of the man because of it. He may as well be Carlos Boozer saying “I gotta put food on the table for my kids.” Food? Really? Gold plated chicken nuggets? Happy meals delivered via stealth jet every 4 hours? CJ was already making a good wage and now that he has his money he’s not performing. Excuses aside, that’s just not acceptable to me. If you’re gonna be a greedy douche that puts yourself before your team, you better lace those cleats tight and kick some serious ass when you DO get on the field.

you can not like the guy
but you should at least try to be informed.
1) arrogant/prideful players like CJ don’t loaf. no doubt it is killing him how bad it has been. on the flip side, a little humble pie is probably not a bad thing for him to get at this point in his career.
2) hold outs happen. getting butt hurt about them is a waste of time. he was being under compensated so he did what he had to do. it’s a business.
3) the o-line truly is gawd awful. Jake Scott, starting OG agrees:
“It is not him,” Scott said of Johnson. “Trust me, it is not him”… “It is just a matter of doing everything a little bit better, doing things more aggressively and knocking people off the ball.”
4) prior to this year, no one could touch CJ’s first 3 years, yet he was one the books to make roughly 90% less than AP. is it greedy to want compensation commensurate with what other people with similar production levels make? do you want 10% of the salary your co-worker makes to do the same job? didn’t think so.

I will address #4 first...
In a strike shortened pre-season when you need all the work with your starting lineup as you can get with a new coach…yes, I think his timing was bad. And to further that point I must introduce you to one Arian Foster. Call me spoiled, and he is making less this year than Johnson would have made had he got his ass to camp and worked out with the team instead of holding out.
Secondly, I’m not butt hurt, I’m joyful. Anything that hurts the Titans makes me smile.
And third, a bad o-line didn’t stop Barry Sanders. Tit fans speak of him like his shit doesn’t stink so I figure I will put him on that same pedestal of excellence for arguments sake.
And lastly, working in reverse order, I don’t know what “Players like CJ” means, but you had a fat load of sludge that left you guys to get a big contract and has been just that ever since…a fat load of sludge. Getting the big pay day takes a load off of the list of worries and can make a person feel comfortable…secure. That’s a ton of guaranteed money from a guy that probably didn’t come from a super rich lifestyle. Give me XX million guaranteed and I would sure as hell relax a bit knowing I don’t have to sweat a mortgage.
To summarize...
Believe what you wish, but I choose to believe the most negative perspective because it’s the Titans. As the Colts fan said before, “I have an opinion, and I’m entitled to it.” And I’m sticking by it damnit! I choose to believe he is a greedy butt humping villain and that’s all there is to it! :D
I HATE that "food on the table" excuse.
No man, people night stock at Wal-Mart to put food on the table. The play pro ball to put 24" rims on their Bentleys.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
I still disagree that they're weak up the middle.
That was the case against pass-happy teams when they weren’t keyed in on stopping the run. Miami, Indy, and New Orleans did a lot of their damage either against nickel fronts, or as a result of our DEs selling out and trying to beat blockers to the outside to get to the QB. The past few weeks though, we’ve seen more inside gap discipline. Smith and Watt have become real factors against the run, and Cody has benefited from not being left on an island in the middle.
My concern going up against CJ is going to be outside containment by the OLBs. Brooks Reed looked good against the run for the first time last Sunday, while Barwin looked a bit shaky. If those two can’t keep CJ contained, we’re gonna be relying on Quin to make some open-field tackles, and that’s tough to do with Johnson’s speed.
Throw in the fact that Hasselbeck is playing pretty well right now, and this might be the most balanced offense we’ve played outside of New Orleans.
you ain't seen weak up the middle
til you check out our o-line. it’s a joke. and running outside is even worse because those dudes can’t pull block to save their lives and our outside runs are often stretch plays. counter plays, draws, and over pursuit are really the only thing that gives us a chance until CJ is back to his old self.

you guys WERE NOT losing that… i don’t care how much you can screw shit up you can still beat MAnningless Colts any day, that’s not a team, that’s a showcase in Peyton’s ability to prepare for a season

NO REALLY I LITERALLY BLEED TWO TONE BLUE!!! That operation to dye my blood was the best $100,000 I ever spent
OVER RATED!!!! OVERRATED!!!
Coming from a Colts fan that’s funny (see this season… your best player goes down, and your season is dead) Seriously we’re the only other team in this division to actually win it outside of you. AAAAAAAAAAAAND we’re always UNDER-RATED, you know that year we went 13-3 nobody even mentioned us till we trounced your team (i don’t think anybody in this division can be over-rated as long as there are players in it with names that rhyme with feyton panning)

and where did that 13-3 season get you.....NO WHERE
This game comes down to which QB plays better. I still take schaub, but man has that margin become slimmer every week.
The texans will expose the titans for the 6-10 team they are, and will run the ball at will. The D will shut down the titans passing game, and cushing will keep CJ in check
31-14 texans

I meant that to say that eveybody crowns the Colts EVERY FREAKING YEAR!!!!
For no freaking reason, yes they always come through but damn, we’re usually ranked far in the bottom feeders (behind the Texans and the Jaguars usually) and we’re over-rated, we’re the only other team to know what it feels like to win the division. We had a shit-ton of problems last season, and yet, with all the bull-crap that came between the team, they still are in a dead heat for division. We are FAR from over-rated, we’re doing well with a qb who’s been on the team 2-3 months, and a coach who’s actually been able to talk to his players for that long.. I say we’re the most under-rated team in the league right now. AAAAAAND Hass is one of the most under-rated QB’s in the league, he should get MVP consideration just because he’s taking what was once a crappy passing offense to the top 10 in the league (and against some good defenses no less)

wow... i angered a tietons fan??? Hooray?
haha… take it easy man, EVERY Colts fan knows how overrated we are. If they didn’t last year, they sure do know it this year. I just enjoy coming to this site to read all the articles and the fans are pretty awesome too. I also for some reason very much love the articles about Shaun Cody. I’m not here to put a pin in your TieTon-dom supremecy. I still think they are overrated this year, but thats my opinion… I’m entitled to it… and I can express it without the fear of somebody attacking a 0-6 team? lol… come on man, you are better than that. I am suffering enough =)
Plus, this comment “eveybody crowns the Colts EVERY FREAKING YEAR!!!!” you answered right away with “For no freaking reason, yes they always”.

You're completely right that the BESFs are overrated.
You’re also right that the Colts record has no bearing on the validity of your opinion.
Whiskey
“Overrated” is in the eyes of the beholder. I would like to see this weekends game before I make any statements about which team is overrated. The Texans whip the BESFs, then I’m all over that!
I didn't do anything wrong!.... and, I won't do it again.
Of course it is
but in my opinion, they’ll be brought down to earth extremely fast. I just think they are a much worse team than their record shows. Much like we were last year at this point. I’m not feeling too confident about the Texans, but I think the BESFs are a 6-10 team. We won’t know anything until it plays out.
so...
what is a BESF? Berry Electric Slide Factor?

Reminds me of a longer version of the “scene” in that claymation America movie… but a more awesome one!

by whom are we even rated highly?
we are #8 in FO’s totally objective rankings, yet in the high teens or low twenties in every power rankings column i can find.

Just that the Titans are mentioned in the same breath as the Texans…that’s a no-no for a Texans fan. Flashback: The Titans used to be the Oilers and Bud Adams is supremely hated here. We played around with the idea of mailing him a bunch of bags of shit from a company that…well, sells bags of shit. So, it doesn’t matter if the Titans are 0-16 or 16-0, they will always be over-rated on this blog.
Having moved here post Oilers
I have no particular bone to pick with Bud, and I could even go in with that.

Someone ordered some to confirm it was legit. I’m still in on it if it is.
Should that say worse?

Cushing has shown up so far this year in a big way and our Marioless defense might even be better in coming weeks. Players are getting more comfortable with their still new defensive assignments and our linebackers are now more versatile. In Wade we trust…

I do have to agree we seem to be missing Andre more so than Mario thus far.
I’d have thought with so many other weapons on offense losing Andre won’t hurt as much as losing Mario.
Ya, we do have a lot of weapons on offense but since losing Andre and THoR we have definately seen a drop off in offensive production. Everybody seems to have stepped up a little on offense (except for the O-line), but we still haven’t picked up the slack. Here’s hoping the running game steps up this week.

In general the offense has been the problem.
The defense is highly active, with smaller players in many spots. If the offense produces a ton of 3 and outs, the defense tires and is vulnerable. The D has largely done its job, the offense has failed to do its job by protecting the D with drives that at least allow some rest (a first down or two).
The offense seems to have produced many many for 3-out than last year. Part of it is the Johnson injury, part of it is the RB injuries, but a huge part is the pedestrian play calling.

Dare I say
This weeks game might be the most important in franchise history.
Why?
Its only as important as any division game. I think the past couple weeks has our fanbase on edge. This should be an easy win.
Because EVERY game

The Physicality of the Ravens Game
should have the Texans fully prepared for the Titans. I think the Texans are gonna come out pissed, marching up and down the field. Foster has something to prove to everybody who’s saying he looks like he’s still injured or lame. I’d expect the D to have a big day, too. Cushing is going to wreak havoc. Hasselback’s gonna pee his baby blue pants. The thing that worries me most is the secondary. Hopefully Wade has them game-ready, because I’m starting to put a serious dent in my liquor suppy on Sundays. If any of you Offensive Texan players are reading this, will one of you guys please put the HURT on Finnegan?? Do it for AJ…
