Normally I would hate on Solomon because of his everlasting man crush on Tom Brady

But he was dead on accurate with this column

His closing question isn't quite as rhetorical as he would have hoped:
How many Texans starters are in the top 10 at their position?

Quite a few, actually. You could make a case for about ten guys on this team. And unfortunately, the link in the chain analogy doesn’t quite work when one position has a considerably larger impact on the game. Going from 10th to 5th in QB play probably does more for you than going from 50th to 1st at nose tackle.

But I’d love nothing more than for you to prove me wrong, Schaub. Here comes a divisional rival that shuts down the run and sits at about average against the pass. Tear ’em up.

by Nashmeister on Oct 20, 2011 6:39 PM CDT reply actions

Kinda where I'm at.

I respect Schaub as a top ten QB and believe this will be a great opportunity for him to lead the Texans to a huge win. Yes. A lot does rest on his shoulders and I would love for Gary to empower him to make more calls based on what he is seeing on the field presnap.

What I would like

Is for someone to prove he isn’t making calls and changing plays. I don’t mean speculation either. All of the coaches and players say he audibles all the time, so unless I’m to believe they lie consistently on the subject then I have to believe the theory that Kubiak won’t allow him to is just that, an unproven theory.

Granted, I don't pay that much attention, but

I don’t really notice him audibling, at least not “all the time.”

by Jonathan Fosburgh on Oct 20, 2011 8:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Schaub does audible.

However I believe its his protection schemes more than the recievers routes. He uses audibles to help protect himself, while some guys use audibles to burn defenses.

by Slightly Obsessed on Oct 20, 2011 8:58 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

he has said that his ability to audible is more change from play 1 to play 1a

as opposed to play 1 to play 7. Which is to say he can change from the called play to another play as long as it is from one pass to another, he doesn’t have the authority to change from a pass to a run or vise versa. I think that its just the way the system is set up as opposed to Kubiak not trusting him.

by Draco on Oct 20, 2011 11:16 PM CDT up reply actions

In all honesty I don't notice it all the time either

But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen, and it certainly doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen because Kubiak won’t let him. I tend to subscribe to the theory that Schaub is given several play options with every formation and that he has the free will to make adjustments like every other good QB in the league. Whether that means voice commands, hand signals, head bobs and nods I don’t know, but I’m sure he has his way of communicating adjustments. I simply can’t subscribe to the idea that he’s handcuffed by his coach.

I'm a man!! I'm forty!!

by Hydroshock on Oct 20, 2011 9:00 PM CDT up reply actions

That's not a theory.

That is exactly what happens. If we agree Kubiak and Schaub aren’t lying about it, then its an absolute fact.

Agree 100%

This is a huge pet peeve of mine. I have heard this asked of both Kubiak and Schaub on the radio on multiple occasions and the answer is always (paraphrased):

The call comes in from the sideline, then is Schaub sees something he doesn’t like or an opportunity to take advantage the coverage he sees, there is a predetermined set of plays he can change to.

That is always the answer. Never does Kubiak say “No, he goes with whatever genius play I call regardless of formation”.

What’s worse is people constantly harp on Kubiak for “not allowing Schaub the freedom to audible”. At this point, I think people are either saying this just to mess with me specifically, or they just repeat whatever they heard someone else say in an effort to feign an intelligent suggestion. It drives me FUCKING CRAZY.

by WhiskeyR on Oct 20, 2011 9:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm pretty sure it was Winston that said sometimes he calls what he wants if he doesn't like the play

Which is pretty much in line with what you said. Of course that’s different than what Manning does but it still tells me Schaub makes the call. And like many other people have pointed out, the plays are designed to always have options, so the majority of the time all he needs to adjust is the protection like Slightly Obsessed said. And when the time comes to switch from pass to run, or vice versa, I’m sure he makes that call too. But since that happens less frequency it could explain why we don’t see him doing it very often.

Now I’m speculating.

I'm a man!! I'm forty!!

Schaub isn't our biggest issue, and great article by JS.

But what is frustrating to fans is that Schaub isn’t able to clutch and carry to overcome other issues on the offense, which is what four or five QBs can do in the league. That is unfair to ask of anyone. He can’t iron out a wrinkle made by poor blocking on one play, a dropped pass on another, and lazy route running by yet another. Our issues with the offense are several of these failures being strung together far too often in a single series throughout the game and killing production. Schaub gets the focus since he is the source of the action on each play, but these issues belong to:

1. Players failing to execute in games
2. Coaches being unable to prepare the players to transfer what is practiced onto the game field.

The fix? We need the coaches to jam a red hot poker up the ass of players who let the team (and fans) down with this lack of discipline and execution!

This sig intentionally left blank.

by MeMongo on Oct 20, 2011 10:21 PM CDT reply actions

Agree but disagree...there's a BIG difference between losing and giving up.

To spite my normal rambles here, I’m somewhat coherent on this one. In my opinion, when push comes to shove, the fate of a game will rely on a QB to make a decision, choice, option… At some point and time Shaub will have to (be a team captain) take a pre-snap read and say to himself “Fuck this I’m checking off. I’ll take the heat at the presser”. I find it hard to beleive that there are no audibles in the O.

Now at the same time, fact of the matter is there are busted plays in the NFL. But in my mind what really makes a good QB is his ability to make something out of nothing. I’m not gonna argue stats and so-forth because it’s a losing battle. Matt’s numbers are really pretty good overall I think at least.

AJ, no AJ, Jacoby, no Jacoby again, SOMEWHAT (please note the emphasis) is irrelavent. There is more than enough in our arsenal, to make things happen.

I reckon my biggest complaint with Shaub is he seems timid. Both in play calling as well as in execution (play calling not really his fault I would guess, but c’mon man, sometimes you have to take one for the team. Not saying he hasn’t some hit thoughout his career with us, but the last play vs. Oakland personafies it in my opinion. Jacoby is about as sharp as a marble and Matt should have know that even with the clock stopped, and someone held his hand and showed him the left rear pylon of the EZ, it wasn’t gonna happen. This is where a QB that’s 6’5" and roughly 240 lbs (?) has to just put his head down and at least make an effort to do it himself. If he gets stopped, so be it, at least it’s an effort to try and win and it’s a LOSS. Instead, he chose to pull up and throw a ball that’s not gonna do the Texans any good lest the DB drops it. That’s giving up because of the fact, he didn’t want to to take a hit.

I’m OK with losing, just not a big fan of giving up.

Thanks y’all.

I feel like both sides are arguing around each other on this issue

the Schaub defender argument is usually “he’s not a bad QB, no way can the Texans replace him with someone better.” the problem with that is no logical person is saying he’s a bad QB or that we should replace him, that kind of stuff comes from your Bennprice’s of the world.

the Schaub detractor argument is usually “he’s not great, and he’s not a guy who you can trust in crunch time” the problem is when people see comments like that they assume it means “Schaub sucks, trade him for Matt Cassel”.

Both sides are correct if you ask me.

by Toolshed1 on Oct 21, 2011 12:49 AM CDT reply actions

Schaub is fine in "crunch time" overall...

…where “crunch time” is defined as “needing to put the team into a position to win/tie”. His stats suffer because he has been let down quite often by other people not doing their jobs cough KICKERS /cough.

Where I do think I see some weakness is when he is getting pressured on a play. I don’t like his decision-making when he is forced to act more quickly than he’d planned. But this is a play-by-play condition as opposed to an overall inability to perform in a stressful game situation.

I’m not trying to change your mind. I’ve been there with other QBs in the past, I know how frustrating it is to be saddled with a guy that you think is obviously inferior, and as I’ve mentioned, I do think something is wrong with Schaub this year. But I’m not ready to write this season off on a Matt Leinart experiment, so that leaves me with hoping for an improvement in our current QB1.

What's really sad...

Is just how bad Schaub is without Andre Johnson. The simple fact is in crunch time, Andre Johnson elevates Schaub’s play by snagging those just overthrown or underthrown passes, or preventing a DB on him from picking them off. Jakespeare doesn’t do that. Kevin Walter RARELY does that. Also, Schaub went away from passing to his TEs.

Also, how the hell do you screw up when the defense only has 10 guys on the field? Somebody had to be open. It’s easy math. 11 is always > 10. Field general my ass. I don’t hate Schaub, I just think we have to look at what options are out there because Andre Johnson isn’t going to be our Beast forever.

The pass rush flushed him towards the side of the field that actually had the right number of people on it.

Also, Kevin Walter was held by a cornerback after being the primary target.

Brisiel shat the bed on his block. If Schaub had had time it would have been a strike to Dreessen.

As a justification of this article

I would say that #8 is better than Joe Flacco, but the rest of Flacco’s team erases his flaws to a degree… Same could be said for Mark Sanchez, (last year at least) but the Ravens rarely have to put the game on their quarterback’s shoulders like we do, and if they did then people wouldn’t view them as one of the top 5 teams this year because Flacco would not be able to carry the load… Shuab is so close to being able to carry this team, but the poor guy has to make at least one retarded throw a game, I don’t think he can help it… So if the rest of our team was better and our draft picks weren’t laughable at best then we’d be like the Ravens. At least in my head anyway…
