Leigh Bodden

Leigh Bodden was released from the Patriots on Friday.  As of today, he has cleared waivers meaning A) no NFL teams wanted him and B) the Patriots are on the hook for the 2M in salary they owe him.  If Texans are trotting out Kareem Jackson each week as a quasi starter, who says they wouldn't take a swing at Bodden.  Not to suggest that players the Patriots release are typically diamonds in the rough but CB2 is one of the few true holes left on the Texans roster.  Why not take a swing at this guy improving the play at that spot from dreadful to average?

I never thought I'd say this

But I think Allen will do fine for us. I’m aware that the ball placement was poor all game, likely helping him look better, but he’s got more of a future with this team than an old CB who can’t keep a job on a team with no CB depth. Allen, with time, will be an acceptable CB on the roster. Not even God knows if Kareem can ever become good, but he’s got a few years left to prove himself, and despite the demand for results, most sane people will tell you CB’s take a few years to become anything.

Brice McCain shows great speed and decent coverage ability, so I think the coaches keep him at dime and/or lock him up on opposing teams speed WR’s like we did with the Raiders’ Jacoby Ford. Also you don’t draft a rookie CB in the second round and not factor him into your future. Harris will get his shot eventually, and I doubt the FO is going to bring in a washed up CB (even if he does still have some potential) to logjam the CB depth chart unless some injuries happen. We have 3-4 CB’s to play 2-3 positions right now after JoJo.

Also isn’t our cap pretty close at the moment?

Thank God for football!

I'd rather stick with Allen

He plays decently when he’s in there

Remember not long ago when we were all willing to throw $30mil at this guy?

In answer to your question, no, because who would we cut from the active roster?

I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.

Keo

The front office has already said they are trying to work Harris in at safety. This gives Harris an opportunity to get on the field and make some plays.

This is 2011 not 2010. Play from that spot is not dreadful. And if you think an injured Bodden who lost his job to a rookie is going to somehow improve that spot than you are unnecessarily desperate. Since the Texans have already passed on him this is moot anyways.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

At this point, I'd rather see an Allen/Bodden rotation than an Allen/Jackson rotation.

Any idea how Bodden is in run support? Believing that Dowling is better than Bodden doesn’t make Bodden a sucky player… just means they thought Dowling was better on the outside. From what I’ve read, they wanted Bodden to play the slot and he didn’t buy into it so they cut him. This also does not make him a sucky player. We know what happens when you try to fit players to a scheme instead of scheme to players. I find it hard to believe that the player we wanted to sign as our #1 prior to last year has regressed so much that he can’t even be talked about as a possibility. I’ve seen what happens when Joseph goes down (shut my mouth) and it scares the hell out of me so I like the idea of another veteran brought in.

And just because 31 teams passed on him doesn’t mean he won’t have a job soon… it just means they didn’t want to pay him $2 mil for his services.

And I'll reiterate a point I made in another thread

The Texans coaches are happy with the play of Allen/Kareem and the other CB’s. You can’t argue with the results either.

Now if JJow were to go down or something this might be a move I’d say they should make but right now an injured player on the down side of his career isn’t an improvement over what the Texans have now.

And just because 2 years ago the Texans were looking to sign him to play in the #1 spot doesn’t mean he’s the same player he was at that point in time. Guys can fade quickly in this league especially ones battling injuries like Bodden is.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

Bodden=an older Jackson.

Another guy to get beat over the top, except he has no future in the NFL.
The no future part is still debatable for Jackson, while Bodden has played his career.

Not that I'm saying sign Bodden

…but the fact he cleared waivers only means teams weren’t willing to pick up his current salary. There could be plenty of teams who want him, but with a new contract.

Response from poster

CB2 spot can be easily improved. Allen steps in and he was brought in off the street last year. Saints game showed Texans can be beat by going five wide. I think Bodden should be brought in for a try out. You can never have too many D-backs and the Texans are weak at that spot. If you don’t think this is true you are kidding yourself.

Pats pass D probably has more to do with absence of pass rush and less to do with CBs.

Actually

The lack of pass rush just exposes that their back end is terrible. They equally suck this year, kinda like us last year.

Despite all the complaining about Kareem/CB2

the stats show we are doing a good job on pass defense (thank you front 7). I don’t see it as a terrible weak spot, because we are compensating for it with the pass rush, and we have plenty of healthy bodies to throw at it, without a huge drop-off in talent.

What I am getting around to saying (slowly), is that I would be looking for an additional linebacker at this point rather than DB. I am concerned that we only have one healthy sub for OLB (Braman) and one healthy sub at ILB (Dobbins), and in addition, Meco is still struggling with his injuries.
