Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Ask a Raider Fan.

What's up BRB? In preparation for next Sunday's Raiders-Texans game I've popped over from Silver and Black Pride to talk Raiders with you guys. A few of my friends may also drop by as the week takes its course.

Our teams seem to face each other every year and a small rivalry is developing. As the old saying goes, from little acorns mighty oak trees grow - a good game this season (hopefully ending in an Oakland win :) ) would serve to further that.

I notice you guys have had a problem in recent weeks with these threads. I pride myself on being a good guest on other teams' blogs (AFC West rivals excepted - it's on like Donkey Kong in there) and I don't plan to change that MO this week. Just one request - if you have an Al Davis joke, I've heard it five times before and they're really not that funny after the third time. So let's keep them to a minimum OK? I'm here to talk football first and foremost, but I do appreciate jokes long as they're funny. Al jokes = no longer funny.

Other than that, look forward to hanging with y'all this week. What's the beer of choice round here?

I have a couple things

Whats up with your collection of WRs? Will any of them be a consistent threat?
Routt seems to be playing well, what about Chris Johnson, how bad was his injury and how’s your depth without him?
Rolando McClain was a little rough in his rookie year, how has he progressed and will he be covering Owen Daniels?

P.S. tell Darren McFaddy thanks for sucking in 2009 and making me trade him away in my dynasty league before he blew up.

I wish we could hire coaches without "having grown up in Houston" being a job requirement.

WRs = We don’t have an outright No.1, but we have a young crop of receivers who are developing all the time. Denarius Moore and Jacoby Ford are the ones to watch, but don’t sleep on Heyward-Bey either – he’s finally beginning to produce.

CJ had a horrible game against Buffalo and has been injured ever since. We’ll probably have our fourth round rookie, Chimdi Chekwa, on the other side – he looked pretty decent against the Jets, not so good against the Patriots but since our genius DC had him in single coverage against Welker half the game that’s understandable.

Jury’s still out on Ro. He has the talent and a nasty streak, but he doesn’t seem to be able to put it together. I imagine you’ll be seeing a lot of Mike Mitchell to cover Daniels.

I was hoping we would pick up Chekwa in round 4

Nice to know he is working out for you. He definitely fits in for your speedy player profile.

by BleachBum on Oct 4, 2011 11:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep.

Right now, I would say he’s our second best corner – but the drop off from him to Routt is massive. Like I mentioned earlier, we have a genius for a DC who doesn’t always seem to get the concept that maybe a rookie CB needs some extra help over the top and/or double coverage when up against an elite receiver.

Thank God we won’t be seeing him go one-on-one against Andre cause he’d have a field day.

Yeah, but with Andre out, the Raiders might get abused with a bunch of 2TE or 3TE sets

I was looking forward to seeing Andre play against a Nnamdi-less team

I figured we would have an obvious mismatch to exploit but now it seems the playing field will be level in the passing game. I think Schaub is good enough to find open targets down field from time to time but I expect this to be a shorter field game, leaning heavily on the run and TE passing.

I'd actually almost say not having Andre is an advantage to you guys

If, on the other hand, you guys are playing smash mouth and leaning on yr TEs things could get a bit ugly for us.

Problem with talking about a Raider DB containing a WR

is that all the WR has to do is line up on the opposite side of the field. Routt can handle pretty much anyone but Al’s philosophy is that you take care of one side of the field not one WR!

My uninformed impression of the Raiders

is that they have a very good offense, and a horrible defense…pretty much a carbon copy of the Texans last year.

I don’t see you guys stopping our offense. I think we have enough to stop yours a few times and win the game.

Sooo, is that a fair assessment of the Raiders? Where would you disagree with that blissfully uninformed opinion?

I can tell you about their defense

The defensive line is nasty, & they have nice LBs. Their safeties are good, but their CBs are young & inexperienced

That's a pretty kind assesment.

We have a nasty D-line, but our LBs aren’t that good. I covered Rolando earlier, Wimbley is a good pass rusher but mediocre against the run and in coverage, and Groves just sucks.

Stanford Routt could be on track to make the Pro Bowl this year, but opposite him we have either Chris Johnson (who blows) or Chekwa, a 4th round rookie. And our safety play is average at best, especially with Huff out.

Our defensive line can hold many runs, but occasionally as with every team that has played us, rbs generally break away for big ones.

Our lbs seemingly fail at their job in that regard about every game. McClain often seems like the responsible one, but actually, it is more the fault of our OLBs. Wimbley is ok, but Groves, our weakside OLB is so often out of position. When big runs break out it is usually Groves who brain farts. McClain is still developing and often shows promise, but lately, he has missed some tackles here and there. We expect that McClain and Groves have a good day or Foster is going to rip us up.

By major "major shout0out" I suppose you mean in the running game?

I don’t see us containing McFadden for the entire game either. Our run D is weak in the middle because lack of size/nastiness from our NT position. If your blockers can get to Cushing I think you’ll see a lot of success. I can see us cheating Manning up a lot which will leave our CB’s in single man coverage a lot, which means Allen or Jackson (whichever one gets the start) could be ripe for the picking, especially against the play action.

I feel confident in saying we will be...

focusing on stopping McFadden. We have a pretty decent front 7 although have seemed weak up the middle to just about anyone. How do you like your chances if we consistently key on McFadden and, say bring up 8 in the box and/or run blitz the entire game? Also, since it is relative to that first question, how has Campbell been at avoiding pressure, getting rid of the ball on blitzes, and how is his accuracy.

I haven’t seen any Raiders games this year so I’m not sure how they have been playing specifically, other than looking at final scores. Nice win against the Jets although they seem to have fallen off a little, kind of like the Steelers we just beat.

Anyway, here’s to a great injury-free game for both squads! Go Texans!

by Mikus318 on Oct 4, 2011 10:26 AM CDT reply actions

Campbell has been decent this year

a couple of boneheaded INTs last game excepted.

He’s mobile enough to avoid pressure, and we rely a lot on screen passes so Wade Phillips might want to restrain himself somewhat with the blitzing. His man flaw is his deep ball accuracy, but he’s all right as a game manager. If McFadden can get 100-120 yards rushing and Campbell doesn’t have to carry the load himself I feel we have a shot.

Run DMC can break big runs from anywhere in the field, but be particularly careful not to let him get that outside edge,

He gets to the edge so fast with 4.3 speed and ripped the Jets because they failed to seal the edges. Campbell continues to generally develop well and has made very few errors so far. He threw 2 bad interceptions against the Pats, but that is about it. He has become more mobile and will scramble when in trouble. He needs to be able to get rid of the ball faster and checks down often and for too long. He’s a good short range passer and lately has started improving his accuracy on the deep ball, but he still seems a little afraid to throw the deep ones. Our o-line has been surprisingly good for such a green new line and we have developed much confidence in the o-line. Compared to last year, the o-line has been Jason’s saving grace this year and has given him time to compensate for his slowness.

by RaiderPsycho on Oct 4, 2011 10:53 PM CDT up reply actions

I fear McFadden on the edge

He’s been dynamite on the outside this season and our guys arm tackle WAY too much. He’s too big to bring down that way. I’m almost afraid to say this but it might be in our best interest to force the runs inside to give Cushing and Ryans a chance at him, although our inside run D has been gashed from time to time.

I'm a man!! I'm forty!!

by Hydroshock on Oct 5, 2011 12:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I also fear...

any scrambling QB with good mobility. I’m with you though; we need to contain everything to the middle of the field and permanently park a S in the box to help stop the run and pass rush. I don’t think Campbell will have time to go deep too often with our pass rush as long as we don’t go prevent-style for any reason.

by Mikus318 on Oct 5, 2011 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Ironically enough

Kareem Jackson would be a huge help here, because for all his liabilities in coverage, he’s actually a pretty good tackler. Having him around the edges would be an asset to our run defense.

Howdy!

A few of my favorite NFL players of all time were Raiders:

Howie Long, Ray Guy, Lester Hayes

I am amazed Nnamdi wasn’t retained by you guys, but I also think he’s overrated at that price given he only works one side of the field. I am actually relieved that we picked up Jonathan Joseph and Danieal Manning at the same price as Nnamdi. Joseph can be assigned to the best receiver anywhere on the field and has shown as an incredible upgrade to us in just four games.

You guys are probably the fastest team in the NFL right now. Aside from the amazing running of McFadden, what do you feel will be your strongest element in the game against the Texans?

by MeMongo on Oct 4, 2011 10:28 AM CDT reply actions

Our pass rush.

They didn’t really show up last week and they are gonna be pissed off. Schaub better be ready to eat the turf a few times.

Also, our passing game is getting better to the point where teams can’t really afford to play 8 in the box against us every game.

That'll be a good match up then

Our O-line is playing lights out this year. Some in the media (for what that’s worth) would argue that they are best in the league thus far. Duane Brown is playing especially well so if you’re going to find success it’ll be against Winston. He has greatly improved his run blocking but seems to have regressed in protection in the last couple of years.

I think our best strategy is to use our zone block scheme to run your linemen and wear them down like we’ve done with everyone else. Even though Schaub has had over 4,000 yards in back to back seasons, we’ve become a much more balanced, ball control style offense. Thanks in large part to Arian Foster’s awesomeness.

by southpaw70 on Oct 4, 2011 10:40 AM CDT reply actions

I know the Raiders have only give up 2 sacks!

Not too shabby. Don’t know if that is because of the o-line being that good or because they have been running so much. Probably a combination of both.

by Mikus318 on Oct 4, 2011 11:27 AM CDT up reply actions

We're really impressed with the O-line.

Coming into the season most of us thought it would be a weakness. But they’ve been excellent in run blocking and done a great job of protecting Jason. One of those two sacks wasn’t even their fault – in the Jets game JC tripped over McFadden’s feet as he dropped back.

Mario Williams is probably the most complete rusher we’ll have faced so far this year, but I’m confident that our guys can handle them. Jared Veldheer and Stefen Wisniewski in particular both look like All-NFL guys in waiting.

I’d also agree that you guys have an underrated O-line. How has Duane Brown not made the Pro Bowl or an All-NFL team yet? I reckon yr group is one of the best run blocking units in the league.

by Travis Roggatz on Oct 4, 2011 6:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Mario is definitely our best pure pass rusher, but.....

The rest of our guys have been playing FAR better than expected. Antonio Smith in particular. The Ninja Assassin is having the best season of his Texans career so far and applies a ton of pressure in the middle, along with J.J. Watt, who is turning out to be a stellar draft pick for us.

Also, watch out for Connor Barwin. I boldly predicted that he would lead the team in sacks this year, mainly because teams will focus so much on stopping Mario. Barwin is also playing at a high level right now so our pass rush is very balanced across the board. That being said, the only above average O-line we’ve played so far was the Saints, and we didn’t have near enough pressure on Brees in that game. Then again, he’s among the league’s best at getting rid of the ball quickly so I don’t know if that’s a indictment against our D-line.

I'm a man!! I'm forty!!

by Hydroshock on Oct 5, 2011 12:18 PM CDT up reply actions

But...

we did sack Brees a couple of times IIRC and intercepted him twice. We also held the Saints to 17 points through 3+ quarters. We gave up all those points and yards in the 4th quarter because we changed our approach with the minimal pass rush and massive cushions by our DB’s on their WR’s. As long as we don’t EVER do that again I see us getting pressure on any team in the league. There is a very good chance that this year’s Texans team will be something very special – not just in Houston but in the NFL at large. Please Durga – no more significant injuries.

since his junior year of college that he’s been in the same system for two years running.

And it's showing in his play

I’ve always liked Campbell and, like Jeff S., think he’s gotten a raw deal until now. He still has a lot of upside. It’s got to be nice not having Purple Drank under center any more, huh?

We're set at those positions.

Marcel Reece is the best fullback in the NFL, and we run a 4-3 defense. Our line is one of the best out there when they’re firing as well.

Maybe we could have used him as the waterboy but he’d’ve switched all the players’ Gatorade with purple drank.

Truer words were never spoken. He has to be the most misleading player the Raiders have ever had.

He appeared so promising in college and the whole world agreed he was the one to choose, not just Al Davis. We were so mislead and eventually his work ethic, his weight gain, and the purple drank showed. We stagnated for the 3 years he was with us as we tried to build around him and it was so disheartening the way we had to regroup because of him. I attribute our long losing streak directly to him.

Pretty much.

The problem with him is that he just never cared. Maybe he didn’t love football, maybe he just wanted money, maybe whatever.

I think we should note that our WRs have healed and are all returning.

What Hue likes to do is gadget plays, and these plays can become particularly dangerous because we have so many players with 4.3 speed or faster making these types of plays successful and difficult to stay up with. All our receivers except Hagan are at that speed. Run DMC has 4.3 speed and has played wide out. Our newest addition at rb, Taiwan Jones, has been clocked at 4.28 and some have noted he has run faster than that. Murphy has been out since the start of training camp and will probably be rusty, but Ford who also runs 4.28 should be back to full speed. Hue might run some 4-5 wr sets.

by RaiderPsycho on Oct 5, 2011 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions

That might best the best idea late in the game, especially if Kareem Jackson plays

That’s what Drew Brees did to spark the Saints comeback win. I don’t think the Raiders’ WRs are better than the Saints’ WRs, but they definitely are faster

We are a run-first team.

Long as McFadden can make an impact we’ll keep pounding it in there. You guys seem confident of yr run D but you haven’t faced a back as complete as DMC yet. He can literally do it all – pound it inside, stretch runs/pitches to the outside (probably his strength, given his rare combo of speed and power) and he’s an excellent receiver.

"In football, I root for the Oakland Raiders because they hire castoffs, outlaws, malcontents, and f*** -ups, they have lots of penalties, fights, and paybacks, and because Al Davis told the rest of the pig NFL owners to go get f***ed. by Screwfish on Oct 4, 2011 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions

We are not confident in our run D

The Texans get killed with runs up the middle. It’s a schematic weakness of Wade’s scheme exacerbated by truly execrable play at the nose tackle position. McFadden is going to rack up a lot of yards.

by cubic on Oct 4, 2011 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions

This is the element of the game we fear the most.

If I were Wade, I’d tie Cushing to track him between tackles at all times, and Manning to track him outside the tackles at all times with Quinn as the safety net for both. I’d also bring in Harris in nickel if there are more than two receivers/TEs in the spread to keep Cushing/Manning on assignment.

by MeMongo on Oct 4, 2011 6:11 PM CDT up reply actions

the run d is bad right now.

especially up the middle (shaun cody). i think that’s why a lot of us are hoping we can jump out to an early lead, possibly taking Run DMC out of the game. but he’s also always a threat out of the backfield on screens and checkdowns.

KJax test

It will be interesting to see if Kareem gets his starting job back. The Texans in the past have shown too much loyalty to underperformers, both coaches and players. Wade Phillips doesn’t have any investment with Jackson, and the Texans are in a must-win type of season, so it’ll be fun to see if Wade goes with the guy who’s making plays.

by Jeff S. on Oct 4, 2011 11:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with your point on loyalty

This week will be interesting. Assuming Jackson is healthy, if Kubiak has his way then he and Allen will probably go back to splitting reps 50/50. However, I’d like to think Wade will have the ultimate say on who gets the nod, and after seeing Allen step his game up last week I think he deserves a shot to see if he can keep the spot.

That being said, Allen’s usual M.O. is to follow a solid game with a poor one. I honestly don’t think either will be our #2 next year.

I'm a man!! I'm forty!!

by Hydroshock on Oct 5, 2011 12:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I give Allen props for the game-sealing INT

but otherwise don’t think he had that great of a game. Better than we’re used to seeing from him, but that’s not saying much. In fact, I don’t know that he’s better than Kareem at this point, and he’s been in the league a lot longer. CB’s tend to take a while to acclimate, so at this point KJ has a higher ceiling in my mind — he still sucks, but is more likely to get better. KJ has looked marginally better than last season (again, not saying much) until he got exposed against the Saints. The Saints have a top notch passing game though that will burn just about any defense, and who else were they going to pick on? Joseph?

With all that said, they both suck (KJ and Allen), and we should still be looking to upgrade next year.

by JBal on Oct 6, 2011 2:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Allen put the hammer on arguably the toughest WR in the game (Hines Ward)

Ward has dished it out and taken big hits from the best, and rarely shows any pain. Allen rocked his ass to break up a play.

More importantly, Allen was “in position” to make plays on medium/deep passing plays which resulted in an incompletion and interception. So far Kareem has not done either. K-Jax has shown decent coverage in short passes, and good tackling.

I agree that neither of them are “great”, but I think Allen is looking better than K-Jax, especially where the threat is greatest (deep).

Texans 2011 Defense is evolving into an epic force to be reckoned with. I dub thee "Bayou Blitz" !!

by MeMongo on Oct 6, 2011 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions

that WAS an excellent hit.

I guess I still have the mild taste of vomit in my mouth after watching Allen against Miami. The thing that sucks is that everyone’s going to want to throw at our #2 rather than Joseph, which means either Allen or KJ is going to see a lot of targets. In my mind, the one more likely to step their game up is Jackson, because Allen’s been in the league for (?5 years?) Allen’s probably at his ceiling, and KJ hasn’t gotten there yet. So if they both suck, give the reps to the guy with the potential to improve at least.

I’m now in a position of arguing that KJax should be the starter, and I feel dirty about it. I’ll comment no further on this subject.

by JBal on Oct 6, 2011 6:17 PM CDT up reply actions

The jury is still out

At the beginning of the season it was about 50/50. Half of the fan base has written him off as a bust and the other half keep insisting he’ll get better in time. To his credit he has played a lot better than last season but that’s not saying much, considering we almost had the worst secondary in the history of professional football, but he was abused against the Saints. So I guess you can say he’s been wildly inconsistent this year and we don’t trust him. IMO his only redeeming quality thus far is solid tackling.

Injuries and playcalling.

DMC had problems with turf toe and other niggles even when he was supposedly fit to go his first two seasons, plus we didn’t have the plays to take advantage of his skill set.

Most people by now know the story of when Hue came to town as OC last year asking him what plays he liked to run, but it’s pretty much true.

And yeah, Jerrah can go to hell. I wrote a fanpost on SBP a few months back describing my visit to his Death Star – let’s just say that the turf no longer totally ties the whole stadium together.

Pryor definitely isn't a starter right now

and probably not for a year or two at least.

Campbell is 29 and off contract at the end of the year. I’m sure we’ll re-sign him, but for how long depends on whether he can take the next step and Pryor’s development. Ideally, we’d have a Bledsoe/Brady situation happening.

Honestly, though – given our franchise’s history with developing QBs (aside from one Ken Stabler, horrible) I’m not that confident.

is lack of depth. Routt is really good and a fine replacement as No.1 corner. But behind him at CB we have rookies and dreck. Our safeties are mediocre at best.

Typically:

Houston and Pittsburgh are bitter rivals when it comes to football, I can’t say I helped that any with my honest opinion of the Steelers weeknesses, by the way I was 100% correct, aside from my prediction that saun cody would accidentally get a sack. anyway, shit went wrong from the beginning.

This week, Nice! much respect for the Raiders and what they have accomplished so far this year.

other than the Saints, this is the “other” game I had circled as “it makes me nervous” even less than which Ravens team will show up the following week. It WILL be a good football game. DMC is the one I worry about. The Texans have a problem up the middle in run support, so I think they have cheating towards the middle in running situations, therefore it has allowed for a lack of containment on the outside. basically it all adds up to….just run the damned ball and the Texans will have prooblems. do that successfully and play-action will create big plays. It’s basically the same thing we do.

did I type that outloud? oops.

How prominently have the TEs been involved in the passing game?

Kevin Boss had solid numbers in New York, and it would make sense for him to play a significant role in Oakland’s short/intermediate passing offense. Has it been trending in this direction, or have the Raiders kept him back to bolster O-line?

by Spektr6 on Oct 4, 2011 7:10 PM CDT reply actions

In his two games he's had a big role in the passing game.

Campbell loves to throw to his TEs, and he’s our best red zone target. He’s going to play a role.

Don't really miss Zach.

He got Antonio Gates money from the Seahawks – he’s good but not that good. Boss is a good replacement and we have a couple of young TEs we’re grooming as well.

Other than Nnamdi…none really. Maybe Thomas Howard because we need LB depth.

he’s going to have to get the same number of targets that Gates does. Rivers uses Gates like a wideout when he can, and targets for Gates are high.

Not at all.

Even when the Boss was out we did fine. I think we’re all realising we overrated Zach during his time in Oakland by virtue of being our only decent receiver.

Boss is also a better run blocker.

Myers is the back-up TE and is a very good blocker. He does go out and make an occasional catch.

But we got 2 new rookies that look very promising in David Ausberry and Richard Gordon. Ausberry can be used as a WR and has played fullback at USC. He seems to have excellent hands. Gordon is huge at 265 lbs and was drafted as a blocking tight end. Nevertheless, he replaced an injured Marcel Reece at fullback against the Pats. Gordon broke his hand last game but they say he is serviceable and may play with a cast.

A little

but Michael Bush is one of the best No.2 RBs in the league, and Taiwan Jones has similar explosiveness although we need to get him on the field. I imagine DMC’s carries will begin to decrease as the season goes on.

Raider fans are anxious to see how Taiwan does.

What appears to be most important about him is that if Run DMC gets hurt, we don’t have to change the game plan much. Many have compared Taiwan with the running styles of Jamal Charles and Chris Johnson.

Those are all questions for which I have no real answer for, but watch him run.

He’s really fun to watch run because he is so naturally fluid and smooth, and seems to have a knack for finding an opening. In the open field he is potentially as dangerous as Run DMC. He has amazing balance and is difficult to bring down. Note though, that these views come from what he has shown in practice and during preseason. Who knows how he will actually perform in a regular game because we have not seen that. Just saying he has been very impressive from what we have seen so far.

McFadden Vs. Foster

Whichever man has the better game, will decide the outcome of this one. This is do or die for Shaun Cody. With AJ out, look for Oakland to drop a man in the box, daring Schaub to throw. Steelers did it in the 2nd half of the last game with Palamalu, and frustrated Foster. I think some play action pass and boots would serve well at the beginning for Schaub, then let Arian do his thing once Oakland has to play honest.

Swat and swim, dip and rip, twist and spin; just do whacha gotta do to light up that QB.

Completely disagree

With deficiencies in both teams run D and how solid both our run offenses are, who runs for the most is going to have little effect on the outcome. Both teams will rush for a lot of yards and the difference between them will be negligible.

This game will come down to Matt Schaub vs JC + pass defenses.
